  1. ISIS they do not allow music to be played. That's because they have never heard a properly placed K'horn.... Your probably right Boxx, I see why they are so mad, all they have is a bose store .

  4. Hi - I have CW IIIs and for several years have run them with Bottlehead Paramount SET monoblock amps running 300Bs at ~8 W. This is in a pretty large room. Plenty of power. Cheers, Jim

  5. Good morning! Coffee is brewed, the ground is still this morning and it's 26 degrees and clear. Happy Friday to the not yet retired set!

  6. As of right now these are in the number two position in my current speaker line up, there is some music I like better on them because of the highs, truly a great speaker. Even as deep as they go I find they still benefit with use of a sub, not too many speakers I have owned suited my tastes without one though. Good thing I have that "sub" base covered.

  9. Here are a couple of homemade subs I made, on top is a Dayton 18" classic sub with a Dayton 250 watt plate amp. I built this out of 3/4" MDF internally braced and dampened with fill. I painstakingly sanded and painted the cabinet with hammered look paint. I also made a grill for this as well but not shown. I also added 1" rubber feet. I ordered stuff to build two of these but one amp was on back order so I built one and figured I would built the other one later, good thing I found out one is all I need for my tastes. This one is about 4.5 internal cu ft sealed. The one on bottom is another 18" Dayton classic sub with a bash 300 amp down-firing and about 4.2 cu ft sealed. Same 3/4" MDF and internally braced dampened. I just got lazy and wanted not to worry about this one so I went with a vinyl wrap. I made the feet out of triangle shaped pieces of MDF glued together then sanded. All in all I am happy with the way they both turned out, They go deep and still surprisingly tight due to the sealed design. Next I want to build a small 10 or 12" compact sub and use a Earthquake slaps passive or something like that. But it will be a while for funds on that.

  11. Sounds about right. Look at the code on the tube - it will read something like "f32 B2C4". Probably around '62-'66. Sadly while much of the print on this tube is still in good shape, some of it has rubbed off. The only things that are clear are: GZ34/5 EICO by Mullard. Made in Great Britain. ......212. Look more closely where the glass meets the base - there is an acid-etched code on the glass. This doesn't rub off. Would be shocked if it isn't there. AN, here are some photos of the EICO tube. Thats all the info visible on it I'm afraid. Could it be that since it was produced specifically for EICO they left off the etching? Nope. ALL Philips factory tubes of that era have the etching. In your case, it should be just above the top of the black base - near the bottom mica. It might be obscured by the "made in Great Britain" labeling, but that's usually the area it appears. It is small, and even at times will be faint/slight, but will be there. Since we have a picture, though, I can tell that it's a Mullard known in the hobby as a "fatbase", made from 1959-'61 typically, and in the Blackburn factory. Definitely a good one - while all Mullard 5AR4s are really good rectifiers, the earliest are the best. The only older version of the old Philips/Mullard types would be the metalbase - very expensive when you find them. I have a nice little stash of various Philips/Mullard types in house, including a few of the fatbase variety.

  16. You know that is a 12at7 tube right? Say what? Steve told me it was a 6922, which is what all the other tubes have been that I've tried in this spot. Or at least the day I picked this amp up in 03 it had the tube in question in it and it also came with the JAN Phillips 6922. He said I could try either to see which I liked best. Is it possible this amp could use both? I mean apparently it is because I've used both in that front end spot for long periods of time. I suppose you could apply the high voltage to the tube plates without the heaters; however, while it would survive for a while, it seems that prolonged use this way would ultimately damage the tube. There is no concern about applying high voltage to the tubes with no heater voltage. Why not give Deckert a call and find out what he is using pin 9 for in the amp? Maynard

  22. Is there any real difference? My Denon FM stereo is not that great with an indoor antenna. After they compress the compressed music things get a bit ragged on voice inflections. JJK

  24. They look great! I'll bet they sound good too. Do you use them for HT, music or both?

  25. That's a 1983 Mullard made in the Mitchum factory. If it's anything like the CV4004 (12AX7) and CV4003 (12AU7) of the same era it's a nice tube. The CV4004 and 4003s are quite expensive these days - and BTW sound really good in the front end of VRDs.

  26. The center and the sub are the two most important speakers in your HT. If you are mainly using the system for movies, I say go with a RC-62, It's a wonderful speaker. Go up and listen to the amount of sound/dialogue that comes out of the center during a movie, get the best center you can afford. If your receiver has auto calibration, timber matching becomes much less important than it used to be. I loved my RC-62 and my RC-64's, both are incredible speakers.

  27. LOL yea someone said my RC64II wasn't timber matched to my RF62II's. Well it isn't but ya know what it was still better then the RC62II I had before it.

  34. Aside from the unscrupulous retailer, or blatant differences between buyers' and sellers' definitions of a particular "quality"... the final hurdle when buying anything online is to link up with a seller that actually knows how to pack an item for shipment. Their is no best deal on an amp, TT, or speaker when it arrives (if at all) on your doorstep completely wrecked because some half-twit believed all that was needed between your item and a nuclear blast was news paper and masking tape.

  35. I do hope that there were no serious injuries. None at all reported. Lots of unnerved pets though. Lots and lots of them. We have no population center to speak of so they generally go unnoticed nationally. (except for 1964) Here's a semi-interesting link - granted most of them are very small - but Alaska has had 337 Earthquakes since Monday. No ! (*as of the time of this post - the site updates every few hours.) http://www.aeic.alaska.edu/recent/macsub/index.html

  36. If either should breach our borders looking like below, I suspect that one should be easier to spot than the other. If the choice is between spotting a bunch of ******* in pickup trucks or something that can't be seen by the naked eye that will liquify internal organs.

  40. Hard to believe everything may be covered in white snow in a couple months. We are having some beautiful weather so far this Fall. Got tired or waiting for this monarch to open fully. Lots of bees too, but they were too busy to mess with me, thankfully.

  41. A PP6v6 will sound excellent. You can also built the same amp with a 66AQ5 which is a miniature ruggidized version of the octal 6V6 the 6AQ5 has way less microphonics compared to a 6V6. 6V6 is one of the special sounding audio tubes. Best regards Moray James.
