  1. Like a woman friend told me when sitting in Poor Paul's Pourhouse in Tally, bending an elbow awhile back when I asked her where everybody was. "Well, you are here and I am here, so we are the party and what is happening." Stuck with me all these years. Lots of places to go in the Lounge section. That is, until they get totally bored with me.

  3. Morning Gang Well after three guys spent the day near my driveway, ends up the guy that lives behind me has a hydrant in front of his house and the 10" main has cracked under his lawn, so no water shut down for the neighborhood. Spent the weekend shopping the web for boat goodies, i do love spending other peoples money, with this wonderfull tool Al Gore has given me, i shop the world, research my buys, and before i buy i do it two more times, end up with a deal dam near everytime because im in no hurry. Just started shopping for the audio system the farmer wants installed, this boat has many bench seats that are hollow storage underneath.....so we are talkin some major room for speaker install(s). Farmer likes his country music, i did not ask for his budget in mind, i just told him if he is going to listen to music on my installed system, dont plan on coming home with any fish that day So far im shopping 1K watts, 8 speakers, and likely be a Sony based install. Coffee time, happy Monday.

  4. Its been a while, I haven't had much time to stop in and chat. Seems some folks are dealing with a real snow issue. Maybe we could find a way to transport it over to Minermark. Speaking of which Minermark appears to have some different type of water issues. Well got to run, take care guys and remember to drink your Ovaltine..

  6. He stays away from home? Since he is married, I have always heard that it must mean spending the paycheck on her...... There is that old proverb (or was it an aphorism) that says a couple should place a nickel in a jar each time they have sex before marriage while dating. Once married, the couple should take a nickel out of the jar each time they have sex. Proverb (or aphorism) states that married couple will never empty the jar.

  10. Happy Monday, guys. Denver metro is actually warming up a bit this week although our central mountains got a fair amount of snow. Good combination ... we stay warmer and the ski resorts/tourism do well. Don't think I'll shuffle off to Buffalo any time soon. Not much to report ... getting ready for Thanksgiving mob, Broncos won and life is good. Check back later.

  13. If money is an object, a newer amp would be the way to go. I don't think you will hear much difference compared to the Pioneer fixed up. I went to a multichannel amp due to space limitations. My vintage Yamaha M 80 and M 70 did not take a backseat compared to some of the newer amp as far as SQ goes.I had the M 70's partially refurb. Once you start refub. old amps, they can cost as much as a new amp.

  18. There is that old proverb (or was it an aphorism) that says a couple should place a nickel in a jar each time they have sex before marriage while dating. Once married, the couple should take a nickel out of the jar each time they have sex. Proverb (or aphorism) states that married couple will never empty the jar. Regarding putting a nickel in a jar.... Just today, I had a meeting with a guy. He's ballpark 70 years old, mother is in nursing home. Said that during the 60's / 70's, both he & his wife had nice paying jobs. He's got some carpenter skills so he built a box. Interesting thing about the box is it had no openings. It was a solid (internally hollow) box. He cut a slit into it. They agreed that each week they'd put $100 into the box. He went on to say that they did that for 20 years, sometimes putting in $200 or if they could afford it, $300. Box was stored in his secret place in the house....wife caught cancer and he tended to her for seven or so years, totally forgetting about the box. He's remarried....remembered the box and found it. Told the new wife, he had a surprise for her. He knew mathematically he had at least $100K in the box. She was there when he opened it. Seems he had something like $120K. Today, his issue is getting the cash back INTO his accounts so he can use it. I told him he has to now worry about the IRS. Seems he already knows that. Doesn't want ANY red flags to go up so he's depositing it a bit here & a bit there. I didn't ask if he & the new wife are still....

  21. I had heard the same thing with a slight twist. Instead of nickels it was pennies (inflation??) and it directed the couple to put one in the jar each time for the first year after the wedding and start taking one out after the first anniversary. Yes, it supposedly would never empty. Your version is probably the one most documented. I forgot that for many, sex is a "forbidden fruit" before marriage.

  25. I listen to very wide variety of music; some "live" recordings which are taped in orchestra halls, some recorded in clubs, others in studios where the "live" sound is never heard by anyone (nor is it meant to be). In my system I hope to hear the orchestra's sound as close as possible to what I would hear in the hall (frequency range, impact/dynamics, volume) and I hope to hear the jazz group from the club sound as close as possible to how it did to my recent club visit. I also want the studio recording to sound as close as possible to what the group, producer and engineers heard and approved when they recorded and mixed the album in that studio. A really tough job, no? Once I recognized and respected that challenge I began to focus on just that, getting things to sound as close as possible to my experience in the different venues and I am quite happy with the results. However the problems remains, how does one know what a studio recording should sound like? Unless one heard the piece being mixed and mastered? My opinion is that we can't and the only choice is to try to amass your equipment and tweak your room to focus on what you do know; the live venue comparisons and the specs of the equipment. After all, what else do we have? So I buy equipment with good specifications and mix and match, tweak and adjust until my live venue stuff sounds good and you know what? My studio stuff tends to sound good too. Since I am far from what most people would call a "purist" when I feel the need to tweak tone controls (I have them!) I do! I am enjoying my live and studio recordings to the max. I admit I have jumped off the specs reservation, I have heard too many super high buck, high spec systems playing music that sounds like crap to my ears, I also admit I can also hear the consistent benefit of quality components and room treatments. In the end I made the decision to please my ears with music I love, investing in the best equipment I could afford but always listening to my heart and ears when building my system. For some folks, the results may not be "right" but for me it's right when me and my family can really get into the music and enjoy it, IMHO audiophile goal accomplished. Warm regards from sunny El Salvador, Tony

  26. I gotcha. I know what you mean. I paid $2500 for my AE3000u in Feb 2009. Now it is worth around $500? That's 7.5% decrease in value per year or $333.00 per year depreciation. Pretty depressing if you stop and think about it. So keep the acura & harley and get rid of the crap to make room. Haha

  33. Morning Gang, it's Sunday i believe. Looking at my cameras a couple hours ago i noticed the street at the end of my backyard driveway was wet. Opening the rear gate i see water bubbling out of the cracks in the sidewalk, street, and neighbors lawn! Yeah baby we have a broken water pipe! im thinkin at least 8" to 12" main I called them two hours ago, nobody showing up yet. So i figured i dont want anybody falling into a sinkhole, so i placed my target shooting road sign out there. I done my civic duty, time for a BM. Pics to follow......

  34. when you purchase the paint if spraying right next to the paint is usually an attachment you get get that acts as a sprayer attached to the can.You can hold it to get a more uniform spraying action and it will give a better coat. Just ask at the place you get it from and they will show you where it is.

  35. If you can figure out the exact dimensions and make a cut list and take it to Home Depot or lowes there is no reason you can't trust them. Have them cut it. If it's not perfect walk away you aren't forced to buy it if they screw it up.

  37. You need the actual driver parameters to design a proper box for it. If you have a little patience, try building a box yourself. It really isn't that difficult to make a box. It could be a fun time with you and your son.

  39. I want to thank you all so much for the support you have shown, as mentioned in the headphone selling rig thread we feel like a weight has been lifted and with what has already been sent through paypal and what was / is being sent through the mail we are able to provide a decent Christmas and pay the rent and heat through the new year and I will be keeping the headphones etc... The generosity has been overwhelming and I want everyone to know we appreciate the support...................also I want everyone to know I have every intention of paying the kindness forward as soon as we are back on our feet

  40. And the final product the screen installed and mounted with the LCR and dual JTR captivator S2 subwoofers tucked neatly in their alcove out of sight. Viewing distance from the screen is 12.6 feet with the projector a full 2 fee further back at 14.6' recessed behind me. The screen is massive in the room and gives the sense of immersion you get in a IMAX theater which was what i was going for.

  41. Um, in the information age, ignorance is a choice, one you seem rather proud to have made. It's physics, not conjecture; cab size, sensitivity, and extension are intrinsically linked. Disregarding personal preference, the forte/forte II are the best compromise w/ Hoffman's Law of any Klipsch speaker: 95 db/w sensitivity, extension to the low 30's, reasonable size.

  42. I too am always looking for the pre 1990-1991 issued cd's. All cd's since the late 90's are so compressed there is absolutely no dynamic range. I will keep a close eye on this thread for more insight in everyone's findings.

  43. Dave Grohl has become a music powerhouse. His Sound City show was spectacular. He also has an HBO series called Foo Fighters Sonic Highways. It's a one hour series of shows focusing on a different city to record a song on their new album. The first episode was in Chicago. He shows the cities musical history and the punk scene from the 80s was talked about a lot, along with the original movement of blues of Muddy Waters. It's a great show, this week they were was in Wash DC.

  44. So that's just TrueHD you're listening to...not Atmos (and TrueHD tracks sound great). Although the Atmos track is there - it can't be decoded without the proper codec. My present thoughts on Atmos are "enough all ready". It seems as if we're running in surround circles. Remember with Dolby Pro-logic we had 5 speakers (no sub- matrix-ed mono surrounds) - it was pretty good. Then came the Fosgate, Meridian, and Lexicons with their steering logic and tri-fields, this is some of the best surround sound that I've ever heard bar none. It had a dimension of height without height speakers. I wonder if its because surrounds of that day were required to be placed higher up on the wall (the Fosgate SD180's were special in this regard)? Hmmmm? Then we come to AC-3 and DTS with discreet channels and a LFE channel (5.1). Extremely good stuff, but now there's a lot of localizing of sounds and sound mixers creating un-natural effects. At this juncture I choose not to use direct radiating speakers in the rears - only di or bi-polar speakers (I've stayed that way till this day). Then we come to 6.1 and 7.1. I skipped 6.1 and when straight for 7.1, lovely! When blu-ray and lossless tracks emerged - something happened...the surrounds all of a sudden came down to ear level! I don't care if Dolby supports this and teaches it - I've always stayed with the surrounds being at least 2 ft above my listening position and a diffused sound field. This sounds more realistic IMHO. I could never have rear speakers pointing directly at me (unless there were 20 rear speakers like a theater - hello, that makes the sound diffuse also). I've had sounds that pan from front to back, go over my head with a good sense of being surrounded - not just on the sides but over my head too!!!! Diffuse sound field and proper positioning!!!! I can locate sounds when necessary but the overall environment is believable and natural. To me, Atmos is just bringing back the entire soundfield by using more directional speakers as actual objects. Problem is - I had this with rears that are placed higher up and are dipoles or bipoles! I'm getting off the merry-go-round, why - because its fun for a while, but you realize that you wind up back at same place you started. I'm just sayin'

  45. re the tweeters Vs mid ti diaphragms there is no question in my my mind that ti mids or in your case Bob's new phenolic mids will have a greater impact upon the sound quality than ti tweeters will. If you recall that the tweeters reproduce all the frequencies above 6KHz which makes all that information harmonics while the mid driver reproduces almost all the rest of the sound from about 700 Hz up to 6KHz. which make all that information fundamental notes. The combination of ti mids and ti tweeters make for an excellent combination which a stock Klipsch simply cannot match. You can kind of think of a three way Klipsch as a wide band mid driver with a helper tweeter and a helper woofer there in lies the magic getting as much of the most important information coming from one driver with the crossover points spaced away as far as possible low and high. Best regards Moray James.
