  1. Got the car loaded up with a few pieces of gear for the record show today and tomorrow. I belong to the River City Audio Society and we have a booth at the show. We will be playing some tunes and giving away a new record player. So basically a bunch of people geeking out on vinyl and telling tall tales.

  2. Morning gang, working on first cut and breakfast sandwich down. Getting ready to run Pierce to his football practice. After that I have to take my daughter and her friend to the movies. Speaking of cables and cocktails, I enjoyed some nut brown ale from a local brewery last night while running some cable in the basement for the theater project. Well got to run, catch you all later.

  7. Thinking about this as it relates to the internet, Back when I grew up and there was no internet you were as good as your word. Break your word and you can bet you were called on it (the max effective range of an excuse was ZERO meters) I carry that philosophy over to my dealing on the net, and I tend to hold people that I deal with to that same standard. Fail to do what you say and I question your integrity (but I am reasonable stuff does happen), Fail 2 or 3 times and my trust is basically lost, Fail to do what you say and become a ghost (IE... fail to contact and at least offer a reason for failing to do what you said, and ignore my contact and request for information) Now we have an Issue I understand people have lives, and that things can come up, I follow the rule I wont say I will do it if I am not SURE I can, further if an emergency happens I will make an effort to notify / contact whom ever I am dealing with in a timely manner (timely means hours not days) How do you hold people responsible for a standard of conduct on the internet ?? I love it when people tell me I am straight forward and they Like dealing with folks this way, then that same individual pulls a ghost act for more than 3 days, (some may consider 3 days petty in the grand scheme But I would bet that same persons Boss would not consider it petty) and they have the nerve to be offended when called on it It is like a double standard today Hold ones self accountable for work etc...but shine on anyone you feel like you can get over on I am already on the boys about Honesty, It is a pet peeve of mine if you lie the punishment is much worse than just telling the truth

  10. Well I got a set of palladiums that will best them both buuuut if you have the space I'd rather have the cornwalls myself. Love the punchy bass from the 15" pro woofers. Plus requires less power. Plus you also get the walnut option which would be the only option for me. If your wanting a home theater out of the deal spending 3-4k on a new set of cornwalls I would highly suggest thinking over my palladiums. Show them to your wife. My wife loves the finish on the but wasn't too sure on the shapes of them. Now she thinks they are the most beautiful speakers she has ever seen. Plus they sound as good as they look in my opinion. 6k and I can ship. We can work out shipping details. Pm me if your interested.

  12. Yeah, I play.dsf files with foobar. I think the component I use is the DFF one. I can verify some time this weekend. I imagine it would run fine on Windows 10... I use it on MS Server 2012.

  13. First time (and last) that I tried Jriver it had a default setting where it immediately started deleting my album art and started inserting its own lower resolution versions and not always correct. Thankfully, I had a backup that I could restore! I played with it for a while but also found that I could not view by my own folder names the way I prefer... so, goodbye Jriver. Foobar2000 is my player of choice these days. I have a nice custom setup that allows me to sort by folder names but also view the album art. Makes it much easier to find things the way I like. I'd be glad to share with any Foobar users if they'd like to see.

  14. Hey Wards are you going with mc21 ?? I have not seen enough to make me jump to it although they are offering a special upgrade price I installed 20 on my new laptop and it worked flawlessly. Then I installed 21 and pointed it to the exact drive 20 just indexed. I'm having a hell of a time getting 21 to get the cover art. First I did a plain import with "get artwork and build thumbnails". That didn't work, so I did a library backup in 20 and restored it in 21. The music files showed but again no artwork. Right now working on a second import over the restored library to see if the artwork appears. So far, I'm not very impressed with 21. The up side is I still have 20 that works great.

  15. Good story Jason. I have a Sonny Rollins CD titled "Concert For 911". It starts with Sonny doing a short monologue that never fails to trigger memories from that morning. I will play it today for the LF. And as Jason said......"never forget".

  16. At some Point Ya just got to Trust. Does not mean you'll never get burned. I've had excellent Results in dealing with Forum members. So far everyone's word has been Good. We all start out with no reputation. Over time others will form their own opinions of us. Post count matters some. Man's recommendation of another man is more important. Still have to listen to that feeling in the gut though. Drive hundreds of miles to meet up with someone you just met online. Or invite someone You don't know into your home to listen. These are just a couple things that make this place feel like a home. john

  21. You have a couple of opinions to your question. Knowing that you didn't open up the conversation to other choices, I only offer the following for reference, only. If it were me... I'd buy two Klipsch Belles in good condition (i.e., pretty veneer) with refreshed capacitors in their crossovers. There are houses that will ship these - I'd talk to Greg at Volti Audio (in Maine) on how to do that without it costing your first born. Depending on the size of your listening room and whether or not it has closable doors all around, I'd look for a fairly large diameter woofer (or woofers) in a subwoofer cabinet with ultra-linear drivers having overhung voice coil designs. I'd make sure that my preamp will handle the bass management duties, and buy an amplifier with a DSP front end to drive the sub. Some subs come powered, although that wouldn't be my first choice, it would be acceptable. I'd set up the Belles for good imaging performance and place the sub in or near a corner (any corner), and use my preamp to do the time alignment of the sub to the Belles. If your room were a bit larger than most small listening rooms, I'd look at either a Danley DTS-20 or a DTS-SPUD for one corner of the room. I'd wait for the "new" to wear off (...a few months), and then I'd buy two K-510 horns, two BMS 4592ND drivers, and a Xilica XP2040 crossover, and find two more low-power stereo amplifiers (Crown D75As work well enough for midrange and woofer duties and they're cheap on ebay or craigslist). I'd then use remove the top hat of both Belles and fashion a nice looking baffle for the K-510s and BMS 4592ND drivers. I'd tri-amp those JuBelles (initial crossover settings are on this forum) and time align with the sub. Then I'd have a big smile on my face. After that new wears off, I'd be looking around for perhaps better amplifiers or K-402s, depending on the WAF constraints. JMTC. Chris

  24. Thanks Jim, all the other posts directly upstream ^^^ have covered it all, right on the money. The problem is finding a pair, as they don't come on the market all that often, especially the version 1's. I do have the CF-4 version 1 which I have modified by bracing the cab, damping the horn with silicon seal, adding some polyfil in the bottom of the cab while removing the dual 3/4 layers of foam (bottom set only). I swapped out the stock compression drivers for some EV DH1506. The CF-4's sound tremendous stock, you really don't need to put a lot of money into updated cross overs and fancy compression drivers. The best mods were the $10 silicon treatment on the horn and the polyfil, another $5. Those two mods reduced some harshness found in the HF range and I thought made the CF-4 VERY accurate in terms of reproducing a piano which actually sounded like a piano, a very hard task for any speaker to do accurately. This may sound funny, but not only are they are fun to listen to, they are also easy to mod, which is also fun.

  25. You DIY sub guys have it made in the shade. The projects also look like a lot of fun. My problem is that I can't build stuff gud.. I am at the 1/2 way point for my Gamma 15 delivery. I would have loved to go after the Gamma 18 but the space the sub has to go, couldn't accommodate. Oh well;(

  26. The Echo 18 is a decent ID sub for the cost. AVS ULF thread did a comparison of 18 in. subs. Note the cost of a Mini Marty if you are up to DIY. I swapped drivers and built 2 Mini Marty and 2 full Marty type subs with a few modifications. I have kinda loss all interest in ID and store subs. Cost and performance are big factors. The only problem with DIY is equipment purchase to do the project and the learning curve. The Echo 18 XL is a monster!

  32. I've had Klipschorns and Cornwalls and still have my CF-4 Series 1. I've also had CF-4 Series 2, which were produced only days away from my Series 1 in 1994. There is a difference in sound between 1 and 2 (I had them next to one another in a room for a demo) but not enough to keep me from buying the Series 2 - they are still very very good speakers. The lore states that Series 1 have the longer ports, 'monster' wiring, and grey horns. I think changes were made on the line in a rolling fashion so there may be individual exceptions. I really like my CF-4s. They're much easier to place than the Klipschorns and the Cornwalls due to being narrower. They are still pretty heavy and tall, and due to their depth (about 19") they stick out a bit if you need to push them up against a wall. They are still very efficient and produce great bass and image very well. It's not a heritage sound but I like it very much. There are just as many mods out there for the CF series as for Heritage. But replacement parts are much harder to come by - the tweeters and woofers are no longer being made and to my knowledge there is no substitute for the woofers. So test any speakers you are looking at to make sure everything works. The woofers' voice coils can sag and rub. If you have any additional questions I'd be happy to try and answer. Good luck and enjoy!

  33. I find that remasters are hit or miss. Sometimes they absolutely destroy the sound! I am thoroughly disgusted with what they did to the latest Linda Ronstadt release "Just One Look." It is AWFUL! They managed to compress it even more than it already was and added a grating, brassy, metallic like sound. More upsetting was that I had bought the expensive version from HDTracks. I tried to find out who remastered this but no one seems to be claiming it... they should be embarrassed. I am shocked to read some of the reviews on Amazon about how great the remaster is... I cannot imagine who these people are and how they are coming to that conclusion. I was serious when I suggested that we get the names of these butchers! I'd like to tell them what I think but I don't imagine they care... they certainly didn't care what they did to those songs.

  34. Agreed - I wouldn't recommend analog output with players at all - use the higher quality DACs and analog circuitry in your preamp, especially to be able to decode things like HDCD, etc. so that you don't have "pass through" effects using analog circuitry: digital transmission has zero losses if parity is enabled in your digital bus. Delaying conversion to analog to as late in the hardware stream as possible has significant fidelity-enhancing properties.

  35. The version 1 has the long port tubes that are a bit more than 5 inches long. And they would have an early 1994 serial number. I'm not sure when the change to the version 2 took place, and I don't think I've ever seen/read when it occurred (serial number wise)... but they will have a shorter (3 inch) port tube. And there was a slight change to the crossover. Version 3... again, not sure when the change happened, had different (lighter) woofers and more crossover changes. There's lots of discussion on here if you search for it. But the port tube length is the easiest way to verify a version 1, along with the early 1994 serial number. And they (CF-3 & CF-4) don't appear for sale very often. So if you want a pair, be willing to search near and far.

  36. Try reading on this thread: http://www.head-fi.org/t/566866/does-a-dac-make-a-giant-difference I believe that there are many inaccuracies in this thread, including decision bias linked to perceived listening differences that were not ABX tested but that correlate instead to the perceived price of the device. The real issue is that a DAC is more of an analog device than a digital device, and many people forget that the DAC must have good analog output electronics. The following is from Wikipedia: I believe that a lot of people obsess over DACs when they should be worried about other things--like 1) room acoustics and acoustic treatments, 2) placement of loudspeakers within the room and any nearfield objects in the way of the speakers - especially between the loudspeakers and the path to the listeners (including coffee tables, etc.), and 3) the performance characteristics of the loudspeakers themselves (including analog or digital crossover performance)-- There is far more variation in performance found in those things than in DACs. That's not an opinion-that's fact. Remember also that video DACs perform their duties at greater than 100x higher data rates and a couple of orders of magnitude more dynamic range than do audio DACs and human vision is a VERY discerning instrument compared to the human hearing system: any discrepancies in video DAC performance is quite visible. 37. Yes Sir, here is the room before the Tv and stand was changed. (and it was cleaned up) Where did you get your 402s ? and what is the market value? I got them years ago from a forum member JWC, I got them from him with a Ev DX38, so I don't know what the price is for just the 402/K69 is. At one time If I remember correctly from reading here they were 1K each new, but this was in 2009. The problem is it's really rare to find just the 402 for sale used, I am not sure you can even buy just the horn/driver like that but that could be wrong ? Others would know better, I don't keep up with that stuff since I didn't need them, I just got really lucky thanks to a member selling them, JWC really did me a big favor at a great price, but that's how he is. When he first asked me if I wanted to buy them in a PM I said I had to talk with my wife, he came back and said he decided to keep them which was cool, I didn't blame him. Little did I know my wife contacted him and told him we really did want them without me knowing, him keeping them was just made up, and she ended up giving them to me for our anniversary present.

  44. I'm not the best one to comment on this, but one reason was probably to correct a hump and a dip in the K-horn's lower middle-range below the 400 Hz crossover point. This has been a welcome change in the opinion of others. In my own experience with the new AK-4, I got much better blending between the 3 horns and a more even response from top to bottom. However, I don't have charts or figures to support this subjective judgement.
