  2. Great picture JL and Gary! Still no word on Joe? Beautiful day here....doing a little yard wok. Raked and bagged 10 contractor bags of leaves, limbs, pine cones. Jake supervised. Lady friend has bought a beautiful house about 9 minutes away. She will close as soon as the gentleman finds a place to move his belongings. She may buy some of the belongings since he has good taste. She paid what he was asking....only on Zillow for 3 days. Her only contingency is that the screened porch furniture and the full size pool table remain. He agreed Cheers Ladies and Gents

  4. Good afternoon gang.... JL that is an excellent shot, you both look the same ((0; You both should be posting in the Fine Food and Music forum, one started by the late Boxx and myself ... Meanwhile, in Music Hall, I am taking in another LIVE concert from the Digital Concert Hall, Berlin.......

  5. Don't leave us hanging. Is the engine good to go? Haven't pulled the pan and valve covers yet....I might do that tomorrow...not to much going on at the shop Monday... It should be OK....like I said my man at the yard said it was a running engine before they pulled it...all used parts are a roll of the dice.... I just want to cover as much as possible while it's on the stand.. MKP :-)

  7. Afternoon... Hey Chuck....tell the LF congrats on the new house... yea man 9 miles away, that's a nice little bike ride for ya....enjoy your day...it's a nice day here also. Not to much going on today...I just did the cat boxes....that's my favorite job in the whole world....NOT... We'll be going to mom later today...we just got to clean up the house a bit... Me and The BOSS are still getting the hang of this "empty nest" thing....as I've mentioned my eldest moved up to mom's with her two.... and my youngest moved out in Jan.... We come home from work to this big old empty house just the way we left it in the morning....well the cats and the Wall-O-Klipsch are here....but I must say it's very strange....I kinda don't like it.....but on the flip side we do get jam out when ever we want.....I don't know just some mixed up feelings.... At the shop yesterday I started preping the junk yard engine for the Pilot....set it up on the stand, pulled the harness and maifold off it....got it from a local yard really cheap...he told me it did run....came out of a rolled Honda Pilot....it's got alittle more miles on it than I wanted, but like I said it was cheap for a used engine...I'll end up pulling the oil pan and have a peek at the main and rod bearings....My man at the junk yard said if I pull it apart and don't like it just bring it back and he'll give me my money back..... Well that's about it....gonna roll out in a bit...might do alittle vacuum job around the house before we leave.... Wishing all a great day.... MKP :-)

  9. Thank you and yes... the wife & I sanded the entire (and I mean 100% entire) inside before she then did the finish work. She did 100% of the finish....cause she knows I stink at it! Logs are square 6x12 inch with 4x4 between them. Added a new kitchen area to the house (octagon area) and what's interesting is that room has a 19 foot peaked ceiling which you do not anticipate when you first come to the house. (probably the one room that gets the most surprise comments other than her ceiling painting in the 1/2 bath and wall painting in a full bath. She likes big windows so we had a large window in the wall....since they are logs, it made enlarging the opening very easy.... pull out chain saw, check for wires and cut your opening! Here is a picture of the opening before it was finished (though getting near)

  11. These beautiful speakers are mine now. They should be pulling up to the house in about an hour. My son was nice enough to go to Dallas and pick them up for me. I had a nephew in the area that went by and auditioned them for me and I could not come up with any reason not to, so let the fun begin. I wont get to play with them tonight since the wife already had made plans for this evening so tomorrow will be Christmas morning for this little kid.

  13. Headed out to play some Yahtzee at my bud's house today. Finishing up my Peet's coffee pods and will pick up a fresh bag of 8 O Clock while I'm out. Warm and sunny out today and plan to make the best of it and hope to play our Yahtzee outside and soak up some rays. Hope everyone enjoys the nice weather while it lasts.

  22. So I decided to give it a shot and ordered the 280. It's really up to my wife on which pair stays...I won't be able to keep both. I'll keep you guys updated on the comparison because there will be an A/B test. The Quartets may be coming to a garage sale section near you, even though they are awesome and I would love to keep both. Fully updated and in great shape, so I'm not sure how I feel about this. 23. Just to abide by the "photos or it didn't happen" rule, here is a nice blurry pic. Listening tests under way. Not sure what to keep and what to sell off, but may have to listen for a few years to figure out for sure. The Volti upgrades do sound very nice, I must admit.

  24. One year, Christmas didn't go very well and I was ruminating about the inconsiderate people and the stress of it all. Then I recalled a comment by The Sage of the Midwest. Ann Landers, of course. Some woman had written to her to complain, extensively, about what was a minor matter. Ann wrote: "I think you should count your blessings and quit-yer-bitchen." Scandalous language at the time. I've never complained about Christmas gone bad again. Ann was so right. WMcD

  26. Just go for it. How often to you get the SO to say "just go buy new audio equipment"? Well my SO is trying to get me to add a set of PSB T3s in Cherry to my pile of equipment. I know as soon as they would get here, she'd kick out the KLF-30s.

  27. See how the front speakers are aimed straight out? Also, I swapped the two cabinets and the pictures so you could aim that right speaker out where it should be. The smallest RP is too big for above the door. Download sketchup if you would like to open the attached file below. 3d rears.zip

  28. Thanks for the posting! The Shorthorn is now loaded in my van. No photos yet but it's in very nice condition. Peeking through the back vent shows the 15-inch driver is an EV 15W, mid-range looks to be the University on an aluminum horn but can't see a label. Tweeter has a great looking PWK badge but is probably the University model. Can't remember the part number, but I saw it. Two labels are on the outside, indicating the final inspection on this one was done on 12/15/1959. I believe the label said this was the "WO" model. It looks to be walnut, so that's maybe what the designation indicates. This is a very interesting old piece. Not really made to be taken apart though! What I can see, the surround on the woofer appears to some sort of waxed cone material and looks to be in great shape. The whole thing looks like a time machine. There are two small tears in the grille cloth and half-inch piece of veneer missing on the front. The front badge is period-cool! Hope to have heard it and taken photos perhaps by Tuesday. Anyone familiar with these? I'm a JBL guy so on this I have no expertise. Edited to include photos of the actual item for sale: Thanks.

  29. the modifications for the RF7 is to address a resonance issue with the woofers in the RF7 which was dealt with in later versions. There was no real problem with the crossover. Klipsch engineers simply did not feel that it was a significant issue at the time and left it alone. The mod originated with Dean on this forum. This is getting off topic.

  30. Nice! Are those powder coated? I don't know what holds up to that high heat. Back in the late 70's I modded my Dodge van 318 cuin 8 cyl engine with Hooker Headers, Arvin Asp muffler, cold air intake, Eldebrock manifold, Holley 650/400 cmf carb (two smaller holes for economy, 2 larger holes for power). Of course it made the van run strong, but because of the increased gas flow and opened up exhaust, it got great gas mileage way ahead of its time! As long as you kept your foot off the gas, of course.

  32. I'll qualify my statement just a bit... My issues are with the current 2-way lineup going back to the last of the mainstream 3-way designs (KLF series)... except for the Heritage 3-ways (I own LaScalas). Of the current 2-way models, I don't really care for them. Though the RF-7's, which I've only ever heard very briefly, did sound pretty good. And I agree with Moray about the Epic CF... I love the way they sound. I own a pair of CF-1, and I'm still trying to find a pair of CF-3 or CF-4 to pick up. And though I've never heard them, I'd buy a pair of RB-75 on reputation alone.

  33. I was one of the main antagonists of Mark's in any argument we'd dredge up and debate each other over in the BS section. I rarely ever came into the general forum because even though I like my speakers, I can only talk about them so much. I was having fun debating politics and philosophy over in BS, and as a long-time, heavy contributor to that section, there is nothing which occurred over there that I saw that would call for banning... except and only except... Mark threw some kind of conniption-fit, resulting in him demanding to be banned. As hard as it was to watch, the powers that be tried to let him cool-off. But he pressed and pressed until he came up with the step he knew would get him banned. He played that card, and he was banned. That was that. Sometimes, when people get too heavy into their own philosophical issues, they go a little out of control. I think that's what was going on... at least , that's the impression I have, though I could have missed something. In fact, I think I missed something about going to Klipsch's "legal dept." come to think of it. I don't know what that was about, but at that point, it had really gone too far. It was like a wounded cow begging for a bullet.

  34. Another option may be damaged crossovers. Try hooking your speakers up to your other amp and see if it sounds right. If not it is something other than your tweeters that went bad in the speakers themselves. Totally sucks...

  36. Correct but he's asking about setting up ATMOS so choices are limited if you want to make it work. If you don't have the seperation it's just not going to worth the $$ spent. Mine as well setup a well layed out 5.1 or 6.1 rather than worry about adding more speakers that are not going to give you any better experience. well to me id rather have a proper 5.1 before a improper 7.1 and I definitely would rather have a well setup 5.1 or 7.1 before a subpar atmos setup. Just me. I see he wants atmos since he got the atmos towers from Klipsch but me personally I'd skip it cause like I said, 225k house I ain't laying speakers out in the middle of the room. My opinion of course. Then we agree, I'm just answering what the OP asked. Ans sorry you keep bringing up the house price of $225K, is that a lot for the US? I misunderstood, even with the crazy exchange rate that kind of money wouldn't even get you into a small starter house here.

  38. Thank you, clarifies what you meant by 10Hz. was not trying to dispute that the JL is a great sub and you did an amazing job! NP, I just don't see the point in measuring your gear not in your room. That's where your going to use it so makes sense to see how it responds in place. And managed to get the send front 13W7 sub veneered and 2 coats of stain on tonight. I used a different brand for this one and totally doesn't match the other side since I stained it a different way as well. I like it way better so I'll end up rebuilding the first box sometime to match this one. Will be painting the front and back texture black (like the first sub) tomorrow and maybe a coat or 2 of varnish on the Walnut. Second time veneering, so be kind.

  39. And a bit of a update, I got the center channel in a few days ago, it looks smaller but it's the same size as the others just a lighter paint. Havn't rerun Audyssey yet but even still it is so much clearer and dynamic sound stage is seamless between the three, super happy with the outcome and it should just get better. Cleaned up the wires a bit as well, with a case for the wires running up behind the sceen Also built a quick cover for my AV rack out of 1x2" poplar covered in speaker grille cloth and held on by the spring loaded magnet dealies.

  40. I know what you mean, but what else can you do? Somebody has got to be ranked number one! All the other teams the voters ranked #1 kept losing, one losing within hours of getting the top spot! (I think that was Oklahoma) ++++++++ WVU 80 National Rankings ++++++++++++ (compiled from a nationwide poll of all Klipsch members named "wvu80" 1. Kansas (ranked #1 at the time winning the best regular season game of all-time, a triple overtime 109-106 win against #2 Oklahoma convinced me) 2. Oklahoma (they have the best player in the country, Buddy Hield) 3. Michigan State (best 3-point shooting team in NCAA history) 4. North Carolina (they play UVA on Feb 27 in 2 days and then we'll know if they can play) 5. Virginia (this is probably the #4 team, but I'm picking NC) 6. Xavier (the great unknown of 2016) 7. Villanova (consistency wins games) 8. Maryland (I'm not so sure they shouldn't be 5th) 9. Iowa (seems to beat the great teams then lose to inferior opponents) 10. West Virginia (Press Virginia, they did knock off #1 Kansas, and yes, I'm a homer ) Dark horse: Kentucky (20-7) Great talent which can't seem to play well together. Here are the real Top 25 polls

  41. It's hard to know what 50% on a volume knob represents... Depending on the gain structure of the amp and the input voltage driving it, it could be 20 watts or 120 watts??? So it's possible to reach an amp's limit well before the volume is "turned all the way up". Even if the amp was just barely clipping, you might not know it. But if it went on for 30 minutes, then it could still kill a tweeter. As you mentioned, the turn off sequence, if not followed, can easily send some loud transients through your speakers. And again, since they sounded fine for a minute or so after you turned them down, it was probably the pop that did them in... And not the volume itself.

  42. That really doesn't mean much. I have blown 200 wpc RMS speakers with a 35 wpc receiver. The levels an amp clips at can happen in an instant and do real damage. Literally a single passage in a song or on a movie can kill your amp, your speakers or both...

  44. By far my go too is the mighty 5AR4/GZ34. I also love the even mightier CV593 (real) don't mistake it for a consumer grade GZ32 they are very different in performance. The CV593 can take a huge beating.... I ran the Tungsol KT-150 George jetson tube past its limits in current in my VRD's (red plating those bastards) with a set of these and the voltage didn't budge... I was shocked...I figured I would have to install SS rectifiers to do it! Hold onto your wallet to get the real deal Mullard's though. By the way the KT-150 is not worth the price of admission it sounds sterile compared to my go too KT-88...but it is tough as hell as is the KT-120. I'm not one to believe rectifier make a huge difference in sound because of the rectifier itself. Changing type will indeed make a difference in most amplfiier but its from the electrical voltage and current change. IMHO opinion the best rectifier for an amplification is the type it was designed for.for evveryday use the CV593 is not used in my VRD's for instance. The 5AR4 sounds as good or better.

  45. Hey Riv.....I did some listening to the 430 today. Decided to hook up the Marantz 2230 and have to say it sounds much better than the 430. The biggest difference is the Marantz has a very warm sound to it. Wondering why there were such different results this time around.....I realized with the last comparison I did between the two I had the 2230 hooked up as a preamp only with a Marantz 1070 as the power amp. Big difference. I've done so much swapping of gear lately and I spaced out. Again, of all the gear I've had restored recently...the 2230 was probably the biggest improvement. The 430 is without a doubt an awesome sounding unit. ...this is just my preference.

  46. We setup a set of Cornwalls like that one year at the Pilgrimage in indy...about a half dozen of us turned the light completely out the room was pitch black and all we could see is the tube glwing on the VRDs...the speakers were gone even though they were just 5 or 6 feet away. Just like Maynard described the sound stage was huge along with the depth... The only difference was we could listen at any level we pleased...the room was sound proof! We listened until about 4 AM that night and went through lots of beer. I bet a few of those guys are still around here some where!

Had no idea this model sounded so good. have them in a line now both sides of the room will be auditioning them over the next two weeks. Which set do you find most appealing?
