  1. It's spring, and once again I am having to clean carbs and tanks. If you don't know, with ethanol in gas, water gets drawn out of the air and contaminates your gas tanks and carbs with water, rust and sludge. It also dissolves and dry rots rubber and some other materials. There is absolutely no virtue to it. In any event, I think it would be nice to have a reminder next fall for everybody to drain tanks and carbs at the end of the season. It isn't a bad idea without the ethanol, but with it, it is a necessity unless you like taking carbs apart. The easiest way is to not fill the machine up when you are done, and let it run until it dies. If you have a carb with a drain bolt, you can drain what's left that way. There are fuel additives, but I haven't had much luck with them. Mini rant: I hate ethanol, and wish they would finally stop adding it to fuel. Production of this stuff creates a larger carbon footprint than gasoline. It's dumb.

  2. Two La Scalas will play as loud as four Chorus speakers and I much prefer a totally Horn loaded speaker system as well as the clarity youy will have on vocals. Before I upgraded to Klipsch TSCM's, I used to have Klipschorns with a La Scala center. Definately run 3 across the front if you can fit them and fill in the bottom end with a horn loaded sub. Roger

  6. A few years ago, the head of our music dept. called me to help set up a new tv and stereo at her house. She had a lightning strike and lost some components. She had a funky, cheap particle board media center, that she took a hammer to just for the tv to fit. She had (and continued to use) her two speakers stacked one on top of the other in the corner. Weird is all I can say. Most of the music faculty had boombox systems in their offices. Bruce

  8. Well I sent a note to the wife of my R2R tech and she answered with a phone call. She said she had no idea where it may be....that there were many boxes in the garage that were too heavy for her to get down. She invited me to come take a look. She called back Sunday and said she had found it under some covers. We tentatively set next Friday for me to come pick it up. I have no idea what condition it will be in but hopefully all together. She seemed nice and still very rattled by the loss of her husband. Having loss my wife I assured her at some point she will not feel the pain so acutely and then we chatted for a bit...... Here is the deck in question.

  9. My room is 13' x 19' with 10' ceilings. Definitely not too small of a room for 3 LaScalas, 4 RSW-15's and 4 RS-62ii's.

  10. Dang it Roger! Looks like we've got another one sucked into the abyss of Heritage Speakers. LOL Aaron, I never ever saw myself selling my RF-83's. They were my first NEW speaker (even though I bartered for them in exchange for developing a website for a local installer). I always told myself if I could find a pair of LaScalas for $500 or less, I would buy them just so I could say I had experienced them in my own home, with my own gear and with my own ears. I LOVED the sound of the RF-83's and I have owned a ton of Klipsch over the years, including Forte II and Chorus II. Although the Chorus II sounded nice, they didn't have the same slam that the RF-83's did so I kept the 83's. But the day I purchased the LaScalas, something changed. The LaScalas had ridiculous clarity and detail and vocals were MUCH better than the 83's. The sound was full, and rich. I wanted to give myself a week or two be certain that the LS were the right choice, especially because I have never liked the dated look of the LaScalas. A few weeks later, I purchased a third LaScala from wstrickland. He had a meeting later that month about 45 min from me and offered to deliver the single LaScala to me. Needless to say, as soon as I hooked up the center LaScala, strangely the RC-64 suddenly sounded small. It was at that moment that I realized how good LaScalas were and having three identical LaScalas were absolutely phenomenal! The ONLY thing I was disappointed in was they don't "slam" like the RF-83's, RF-7's, RF-7ii's, CF-4's and KLF-30's that I've owned. This is the last time I saw the RF-83's & RC-64 I did MANY A/B comparisons because I did not want to sell my babies and end up regretting it. The RF-83's are fantastic speakers.....but I have NEVER regretted my decision to keep the LaScalas. Not only did I keep the LaScalas, but I'm now in the final stages of rebuilding the front wall. Ask Roger, I was probably the least likely person to ever want to keep a pair of LaScalas due to their vintage look alone. I've said this before but I can't imagine ever wanting to sell them...until something that sounds better comes along at a great price.

  12. Black satin with no upgrades/mods would go for $800.00 at best. This guy is high. I'd say at this price they better be Mahogany, titanium tweeters, phenolic mids, rebuilt x-overs and the cabs better not be loose.

  19. Thanks RK! Since the RSW was gone I decided to play with the TTLS and after some more experimenting with locations. ..I've decided to hang onto it. So as far as this thread goes, the only thing left are the 18 inch EV subs. I'm lowering the price to $300 for the pair. They're not really for HT but rather to use in a very large room or preferably outdoors to just let the music rip. Sent from my SM-G920R4 using Tapatalk

  20. That's an absolute wonderful idea! Having the tv on top of the speaker! I had been wondering, if I did use a La Scala as a center how would I work that out! I shall wonder no more!! That speaker isn't that high either so it actually works out perfect! LaScalas are Birch plywood... My guess is it would easily hold well over 100 lbs. And if I remember correctly, there's an old ad for the LaScala where someone is sitting on top of it. So an LCD TV won't cause any problems. At 35.5" tall it puts the midrange and tweeter just below ear level when I'm sitting on my couch. And for me that puts my TV at a perfect height.

  22. On the VMS, try the Jico stylus. It has a nicer sound to me than the original. I am also getting one of the 2 done with a line trace tip.I am also contemplating the ruby cantilever with line trace. I had the Shure V15 III with the original high track and SAS replacement stylus, and felt it was too subdued for my tastes. Nice cartridge to me, but not enough on the low end or high end.

  23. I know on my end,I like using an external phono pre.I went through my receiver, but it sounds better IMO with the external one. You can get a phono pre with both as I have a MC/MM one and it has an adjustable gain as well as a 20/100 gain button. Now if you had a nice Scotts or Fisher, that may be a different story. I'd definitely try out a few of the carts with shibata tips, whether through Jico or not.

  25. Glad I'm not the only one with a VMS-30 MkII (original green stylus). I don't use it regularly as I side with Shure V15VxMR. My VMS's body is a little corroded but it plays fine. It just sounds a little too subdued for my tastes.

  27. Hmm, KLF-30s are going up in price. I guess I need to keep mine a while longer. Kind of like gold or the stock market Actually in the right room, they are definitely the sleeper of the Klipsch line. In my 20x22 open back family room with good corners, being 3 feet out from the corners and sides, they compared very favorable to k-horns. My k-horns are gone if that tells you anything.

  28. IMHO a true music lover enjoys music played on any device...while most including myself prefer better quality reproduction it is not a prerequisite to enjoying music..if it is again IMHO your a gear-o-phile not a music lover..nothing wrong with that but most will not admit it..

  29. These are not Heresys but you definitely will not "need" a sub with these for just music. http://quadcities.craigslist.org/ele/5470409422.html Bill I normally don't care for the oak versions, but those are pretty nice lookin!

  32. The LaScala is a wonderful speaker but, if this is for HT or majority HT it may be worth it. For stricly 2 channel the La Scala and Chorus are both excellent.

  33. I haven't heard much of the Reference premier mains but I do have some Heritage Chorus's and I'll say that if you find a pair of heritage speakers in good condition for a good price I think you definitely owe it to yourself to give them a try. After hearing my speakers for the first time they definitely set the bar for any speaker I listen to from here on in. These are the first speakers I have ever heard that literally take my breath away and leave me in awe! I'll just say when I first got my speakers home and hooked them up and played them everyone in my whole house gather around my room in awe of what they were hearing. I've done some research on the whole Heritage vs Reference line myself and the main consensus I got was people tended to think the heritage was better for music and the reference was better for theater but I use my heritage for theater and think they sound absolutely incredible in that field as well. Also, like others have said if you bought a pair of heritage and turned out to dislike them, you would have absolutely no problem selling them. This site has a garage sale section which I have seen items sell extremely fast for great prices on.

  36. Actually, I love the way the Heresies look. They are so ugly that they are cool and they make me smile every time I see them. As far as sound goes, it's much different than the RP and they have a soul that the new ones just don't seem to have. Which one is better is up to you. Heresies are definitely worth a listen but I wouldn't say they will blow yours away.

  40. Where I previously lived, I bought a good outdoor/attic antenna with good ratings. It worked very, very well. http://www.walmart.com/search/?query=attic%20antenna&sort=rating_high&cat_id=3944_1060825_133270_4536 Now, I use amplified rabbit ears, which work ok. However, sometimes, I get impatient when reception is not as good, and it makes me think about going and getting another outdoor/attic antenna.

  43. That is a large room with open spaces. To be honest two 15 in ported subs may do it depending on your goals. Rythmik get's my vote as the best ID 15 in. sub. What you can also consider is the Dayton UM 18 kits that can be put together is a couple of hours. They will be not larger than Rythmik sub, actually a bit smaller. You can paint/veener them or get someone else to do it at your leisure. The kits are $354 and all you need is some wood glue, polyfil and a screw driver. You can get an I Nuke 6000 DSP amp to run both subs. So, two good subs for under a grand! One guy put a nice one together using duct tape. I have a pair that I painted copper. You can see the bottles of glue in the background on the pic, lol.
