  2. FYI - if you look closer, those cabinets are actually tapped horns. Good bass to 30HZ!

  3. Contrary to conventional wisdom on this site, amplifiers do NOT sound the same. And buying a cheap receiver at a big box store will bear that out more than anything I can tell you. But let's hope you make the smart decision not to do such a thing. Lascalas and tubes go together like bees and honey. Please state what your budget is and what you consider "modern conveniences" and someone here might be able to recommend a tube amp for you.

  5. So was it cold everywhere this morning... Except where @Full Range is? It went up to 28 after 10:00 a.m. this morning, I was taking the trash out at about 7:00 and brought it back in to wait until after lunch!

  7. Hey DJ, I like that boogie sammich! Tell me he didn't make a deal that was in 2015?. The unmistakable reggae jazz fusion that only the Police could do right that I've heard. And that's a toe tapper to end up with. Yeah the last is the top of the ticket!

  9. I agree. It’s the honesty of the La Scala. I guess I can hear some resonance, but it’s in the recording. Just like listening to something with steel guitar. Is it the guitar or the speaker? I want to hear all of that. I’m not big on super polished music. I don’t want my speakers to gloss over all the little nuances that make music what it is. That is what’s so special about the La Scala’s.

  10. I just listened to that song on Tidal, on fiberglass La Scala splits. All original except the tweeters are DaveA’s and the crossovers have been updated with JEM caps. I don’t hear any resonance. I will say, I don’t think that is a very good recording unless that was the effect they were going for. Sounds like a microphone effect. Dark, muffled dreamscape.

  11. Pretty sure that review is the AL5. I don't think they ever reviewed the original lascala. Sam Tellig did a write up of the LS II.

  14. RCA input jacks are unbalanced input connections. Yes the shield needs to go to the chassis on the left input just like the right. If it has always been like this you have been lucky. Or perhaps a solder joint has cracked or opened in some other fashion. Could even be lifted foil on the circuit board. What amp is it? Everything you wanted (or didn't) to know about grounding: https://centralindianaaes.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/indy-aes-2012-seminar-w-notes-v1-0.pdf

  17. I'm of the school of thought that says you can't tell the difference between high end and "big box store" amps as you call them. Save your money and buy a run of the mill amp from the popular brands and you'll be fine.

  19. Hi, I’ve finally been able to dig out my LaScalas (1983) after several decades of the rat race. I used to power them with a Soundcraftsmen RA6501/DX4200 amp/preamp combo. The amp is currently in the shop (3 decades of storage) and hopefully comes out working as it once did. But what if it doesn’t?, I ask. I want to come up with a contingency plan, in case of the unthinkable. So I’ve started looking into modern day amplifier alternatives that will match well with my La Scalas. I May be forced to bite the bullet and settle on an Asian amp from a big box store, because I’m no longer a single guy with an unlimited toy budget. So I ask you all if there’s an American made amplifier (with some modern conveniences) that will cleanly power my beloved La Scalas. Or will I have to settle for a big box store amp in order to get the band back together - on a budget. The band: Nakamichi Dragon. Akai GX747. JVC QLY66F.

  20. Hi all, I have since several years a pair of Cornwall 3; my room is approximately 13 x 25 ft and my seating position is 9’ from the the speakers. I love to listen to female voices: jazz, pop, folk, etc... For this kind of music, in your opinion, which speaker is better? Cornwall III or Heresy IV?

  21. Hello I just wanted your advice on buying a new pair of speakers. My budget is < 2000 euros (could stretch that to a little bit more) in Europe. The only application would be to listen to music, mostly vinyls played on a rega turntable. I have a fairly entry level amplifier : Pioneer A-50, which I'm planning to upgrade at some point, maybe something in the rega line. I was using until recently a pair of Davis Acoustics Vinci HD, a model that has been discontinued since and whose replacement I think would be the Davis Acoustics Krypton 9 (https://davis-acoustics.com/en/krypton-9-2/). I quite liked the speakers, I am in an attic with a huge space (think 6meters by 15 meters room) filled with a plethora of objects, but the listening "experience" takes place in a square of 5m x 5m and I'm sitting about 3 meters from the speakers; I don't have any restrictions on the volume and play the music whatever feels comfortable that day. I thought the Vinci HD performed well (granted I don't have many reference points). Since then I had to give the speakers back to the person lending them to me and I am now, temporarily, on a set of cheaper JBL Northridge E60. The difference is quite stark. I came across the Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-8000F II which might be a good candidate. They are in the budget (I can get them for 1500 euros) and I'm under the impression they would represent an upgrade, to the JBLs of course, and maybe to the Davis acoustics. What do you think? Also, out of curiosity, would speakers like the Heresy "work" in my configuration (maybe they are designed for smaller rooms I don't know)? I must admit I like the way they look, but they are found at almost 5k euros here (for a pair). Just curious how big of a jump they would represent as compared to the RP-8000F. Thanks for taking the time to read and give your insight!

  22. The RP 8000 is an incredible speaker, I think they are underrated somewhat because of their attractive price , nice extended bass ,more so than Heresy , extremely clean and detailed. Both these speakers will play loud with no distortion in large rooms with their high sensitivity . Heresy is also an excellent speaker of course and it too will fill a large room , either speaker will give extraordinary sound .

  25. I know this might not seem a huge upgrade to some, but for me it was. I upgraded from RP-500c center channel to RP-504cII. Front L/R I went from RP-500m to RP-600mII. Got it all setup, ran Audyssey, then manual distance, levels, and crossovers. I tested some scenes with surround and dialogue. I then played some music. I'm extremely satisfied with how it all sounds. Dialogue is crystal clear while there's a lot of sound effects going on. I streamed Chris Cornell from Audioslave singing Nothing compares to you unplugged and it sounded amazing. Next up, another sub and blu ray player.

  26. definitely , the Cornwall IV has the same midrange driver as the Heresy IV + the advantage of a much larger midrange horn , here's a video showing the CW IV going head to head with the JBL 4367 Studio monitors worth 3 x the price

  27. the Cornwall III is pretty close to a Heresy III as both speakers share the same HF drivers and horns , but the Heresy IV has a superior and much larger Midrange driver , meaning the Heresy IV will be superior in terms of vocals versus a Cornwall 3 .

  29. I’m sorry that you have a problem with reading comprehension. The author states that they left the AL5 on the floor because it was so heavy. The measurement with the woofer disconnected was a a standard frequency response measurement and the author is acknowledging that the floor reflections were not allowing him to get an accurate picture of the response of the speaker which is why he only included the midrange and tweeter on that graph.

  30. Long story short....the house had been remodeled in 2014 and I think they tried to cut corners. The electrician was able to fix the problem and it worked out great for me because he was able to make it possible to use my monoblocks and I didn't have to worry about the house burning down

  33. I listened to Heresys at a London hi-fi dealer in 1994, the way they are meant to be listened to...on the floor with the original plinth and angulation. They sounded very right that way. Anything that raises them reduces the bass and the sound will be very out of balance. It's an improvement for the worse. A Heresy is something I'll have to buy as long as I live, despite my UG Jubilie and my 1977 La Scala, just because I've never forgotten what I heard in London.

  36. in an LS bass bin , thicker panels must be all around including the panels of the dog house in order to tame the resonance from the top+ bottom + the sides +the dog house , 2 horizontal braces cant replace all these panels without causing unwanted reflections .

  40. the AL-5 need a sub and SS power , it's not a coincidence if klipsch are coming out with new subs by summer 2024 , hang tight , buy a new sub and you'll be very happy . in the meantime , try a Yamaha A-S1200 or 2200 or a Rotel Michi X3 , and you may find a bit more clean-tight punchy bass with the AL-5

  42. I'm running 2 RF7's and a rc7 with an Denon 3803, and I usually put the volume around -5 for long periods of time. Do you people think that the receiver can take this? I don't have an spl meter to check. And I'm most of the time not in the room when it's this loud, the room is 9.5x13.5x7.5 with 3 walls. The open part goes into the rest of the house. I can say being in the room with the volume at -5 is nuts I'm just worried that I might be damaging the speakers or the receiver. I'm a little worried about my center but if it can handle it I'm pretty sure the rf7's can. I'll be adding another pair of rf7's and rs7's later, and planing on the pb2+ as the sub.

  44. What kind of sub should I get? I have a denon 3803, Fronts RF3II, Rear RF3II, Center RC3II, Rear Center RF3II. My budgets is enough to get dual svs ultras or lower.
