First no one should be feeling defensive about this subject with the La Scala because we all know there is no perfect loudspeaker. By discussing this aspect of the La Scala design everyone can benefit from how to minimize or compensate for the “emphasis” in the 120Hz-180Hz region of the La Scala to achieve the best sound possible in their system. I really don’t see any need to debate the “emphasis” in the 120Hz-180Hz region (peak centered at 148Hz) if for no other reason than the fact that Roy provided the PEQ values to compensate for it. It is clearly audible on some recordings as the examples that @Flevoman has given us and I can hear it maybe to a greater or lesser extent than he is experiencing but it is obviously there and if anyone who has the capability to implement the (PEQ of 148Hz, Q:8, -7db) they can prove it to themselves. The recordings that @Flevoman provided as examples in this thread are really enjoyable when the “emphasis” is removed from the La Scala but borderline enjoyable for me if I don’t apply the correction (PEQ: 148Hz). miketn3 points

Bruce, David - - Thanks for letting me know your "Juices" are still flowing! Nice setup David. The Duke still reigns! Duke Spinner - People Chow was a project I worked on in the 90s. It occurred to me that most people feed their dogs the exact same food every day. I thought if that worked for dogs, maybe it would work for humans too. Why not have the "perfect nutrition" every day instead of monking around with a million different foods - many of them bad for you. So, I began concocting ingredients into a mix that could be stored easily, carried easily, and eaten without utensils - aka People Chow. It was of course 1/2 joking, 1/2 theater for my friends, and 1/2 serious attempt at simplifying my life living in an Airstream trailer on the beach in Half Moon Bay. Happy New Year to you all! This begins my 23rd year on the K-forum. Ha Ha, I don't know what to think of that.2 points

Hi all, long time listener, first time poster here! I've been using Klipsch in my home cinema setup for a couple of decades and for a long time have had an aspiration to find some vintage La Scalas to underpin a HiFi setup. I'm in the UK so they don't pop up that often and I've found someone selling a 1970s pair that have been sat unused in a church for the last 15 years having been used as organ speakers prior to that. The type is listed as LS.BB and the serial is 18T979. The cabinets are well scuffed but don't have any major dents, cracks or anything visible other than surface damage. I think they would clean up OK. I've just received pictures of the crossover. Looks like it's have some tinkering but I'm past my knowledge here so hence the post there's also an amp that's been added to each speaker as they were used as active speakers with the organ, but I assume this would be relatively simple to remove. My question is what am I looking out for in terms of things that would make me completely avoid them? The seller is very open to negotiation and is keen to be rid of them. Again, I know the UK is a different market, but I would be interested in hearing thoughts on an opening bid either assuming everything is good, or assuming the worst.2 points

Very Nice @Marvel. That deserves to be heard through fully horn loaded Klipsch! & @babadono they weren't in my rotation back then when they came to town a few times. Like it better now than the one I posted from back then.2 points

Randy, I am here to gain knowledge, help others, and enjoy what others share. Members using the ignore option would be very detrimental to others who are trying to gain facts. As with a lot of threads, you have a large number of posts, most of which are arguing and insulting many others who have, individually or combined, more experience and knowledge than me and or you... A lot of your entries contradict themselves (there is no resonance to how to fix the resonance) I was told that we have two ears, two eyes, and only one mouth, and it is not a mistake by God or Mother Nature. I learned a long time ago that: 1) I don't know it all and I learn from others if I listen 2) That I gain credibility when I admit when I am wrong (and sometimes that's not easy because I am not made of straw) Happy New Year to you, hope you're doing well.2 points

Hello, I am a newbie to the site. I bought these Klipsch speakers a few decades ago brand new, used them and loved their sound. They have set idle now in my air conditioned home for the past twenty years or so. Can you tell me a bit about these (model, date manufactured, value if re sold); they are still in mint condition. I’m moving to Costa Rica and I do not think they will fare well there…….no A/C and high humidity. Oh I have a center channel also that is functions unceremoniously as a TV stand. Here are pics of the speakers and labels.1 point

Thanks Mark. Happy New Year to you too. I think since I am quoting you, you will get notified/see this. But in the future if you want to alert someone you have quote one of their posts or do this @RealMarkDeneen with the @ sign. I stumbled onto your post by accident. Carry on....1 point

Happy New Year, Mark! I'm almost a newbie compared to you and who knew you were an excellent photo artist???😎 Heck, I enjoyed the 15 years of "tell me what you really think" days but everything, everywhere has calmed down since then. Lol as the kids say.1 point

Went to Sasabe. Water sample got taken. Because of the immediacy of the folks in Sasabe SON bugging out, the pets got left behind. With that being said, there has been an effort to get animal food to them ... and we were blessed with a bag of dogfood to deliver to the port of entry . I am guessing they are feeding at the port. We saw a momma dog and puppies running around ... Turns out, there were a few cats, too. The agents talked wife into taking a cat. So ... we now have a B&W female tuxedo cat. She doesn't speak English ....1 point

Mornin' all light roast Peruvian in the cup. I guess I am driving to Sasabe this AM. Just a quick trip. Some agency wants water samples.... routine testing. Wife won't be needing to do work. Since we got the big screen tv to use as a monitor, she can work at home .... When she rearranged her office to use the big monitor, it cascaded throughout the house. Finding many things we knew we had, but couldn't find. And it will be the same, the next time we need this stuff.1 point

Me too. I remember my Dad taking out all the tubes in the TV and going with him to the drug store to test them. It says us old farts have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.1 point

Long story short I just changed from a Samsung Android phone to an iPhone 13. As you may know, the newer iPhones don't have a 3.5mm headphone jack. So, that leaves me with a couple things that I'll probably never use again! First up is a pair of Klipsch R6 Reference on-ear headphones. They are in like new condition. I have the original case for them and I believe I have the original 3.5mm to 1/4" adapter as well. Here's the Klipsch page on them: Klipsch® R6 Reference On Ear Headphones | Klipsch Second up is a Bravo Audio V2 headphone amp. This is a Class A tube headphone amplifier. There are 2 tubes included: a JJ ECC82 and a 12AU7. I purchased this from forum member flatgrass and only used it a couple times for a couple hours maximum. I believe I still have the original box for it. Here's a review of it: Audi Bravo V2 Headphone Amplifier Review - Audiophile Review So, if you are interested in either of these items here's what you need to do: If you are interested in the headphones, take a guess as to the length of the biggest walleye I've ever caught (in inches). I'll take guesses until this Friday August 5th. If someone guesses the exact length correctly before that they'll automatically win right away. Otherwise, it'll be whoever is closest by Friday the 5th. :Congrats to @Shakeydealwho was the first to guess correctly!! If you are interested in the headphone amplifier, take a guess as to how many years my parents have been married. Same rules apply as above. Please only one guess per forum member for one item. I'd rather have two different people "win". I'll pay shipping costs for both items. U.S. addresses only. This forum has been great to me over the years so I thought it would be fun to pay it forward. 👍1 point

@Delicious2, if all else fails P-Audio makes a copy of that tweeter. I THINK you can get a pair of them off eBay for $50. Whatever the sonic differences are will match.1 point

Welcome @bobofgold Try 800 to 1000 US dollar equivalent for the buy, bearing in mind the refinish of cabinets, the refreshing of capacitors, the transportation. The chance you are taking, without the ability to demo if all driver/speakers are working, if so. Or, go abit higher if seller taking bids, auction style, if you really want them.1 point

This is a basic simulation of the LS bass horn in Hornresp. The K33 is in light gray and I’ve plotted the exact same horn in black but substituted the driver specs for those of the Eminence Kappa 15C. as you can see, both drivers show a peak in the 150Hz region with the 15C showing less of a drop in output. You will also note that the 15C gives up a little on the low end to the K33. Even if the sidewalls aren’t resonating(much) there is still going to be that peak in the response which will really honk if given the right(wrong) source material. This peak in the 150Hz region is well documented, and even showed up in the response curves from the stereophile review of the AL-5. Before anybody has a chance to try to pretend that I’m making this up, and that the stereophile measurements aren’t valid(I’m looking at you @OO1 ), I would like to remind you that Roy himself posted the following EQ settings for use with the LS bass section when using an active DSP crossover. 87hz, Q:3.5, +5dB 148Hz, Q:8, -7dB 380Hz, Q:5.5, +2dB I think it’s hard to realize what you are missing until you have a chance to hear the LS bass without that peak.1 point

The old Crew stadium is a nice place. Plenty of parking. I'm an hour north w/4 lanes all the way to Cbus and my doors are open if you like. Save the hotel money cause that's an insane waste with lodging and food costs today. Load em up and bring your A game. lol1 point

Hey Babadono--- I turned 75 last October. Yup, still out in the desert where I imagine I will someday just walk out into the 120-degree heat and become part of the landscape of bleached bones in the Mojave Preserve. People Chow is still a dream - HOWEVER, I do eat incredibly simple foods in very modest amounts. My menu has about 12 - items on it, which is in some way consistent with the People Chow idea. But when I first worked on P.C. it was 1993 and I was mostly using "carbs" to make the mix. UGH! I am almost a zero-carb guy now. "All you need is meat!" I'm hibernating for the dang winter here. I'm freezing in this 50-degree weather. Can't wait for that 100-degree mark which usually comes in early May. Keeping busy with speaker projects and my very newest "entertainment" of restoring 70's era receivers. Little damn jewels they are! Happy New Year, Amigo! Mark1 point

I beg to differ on this. I've spent time with the earlier LS and I'd say the improvement wrought by the II version is not subtle. It sounds better in almost every aspect.1 point

Well folks thought I'd drop back by to say I survived the Knee replacement surgery better than I could have hoped for 4 days in and I slid the walker behind the door and I'm using a cane, after all my vanity can only stand so much of that crap LOL! It'll be a couple month ordeal before I'm jogging, but I should be taking on a limited amount of work again before spring! In the meant time I might be posting a couple more pieces for sale to get me over the hump. On e already has a first dibs call out on it (Stereo VRD). But the other will be a pretty nice 299B that I have to put an upgraded power transformer in. Which I need to get to ordering. Any way again thanks for all the well wishes it good to see this place hasn't lost its friendly nature! I'll be forced to take lots of breaks when I get back to work so I'll probably start hanging out here again. Did I hear right and Mark Deneen is back in the house? Boy it would be nice to catch up with him, What a great guy! If any of you remember Mobile Homeless (Kelly Holstien) I still converse with him now and then. Funny how true friends find a way to bury and hatchet! Anyway, I'm rattling on! Cheers Craig1 point

mmmm the best part, I like my iodine fried. Sardines are good but I would never eat a oyster from a can. 🤢 We were at Rodney's once and he was cooking salmon, before he started I cut a nice piece and just started eating it, they all kind of freaked out so I did it again, I love salmon or tuna. Salmon kind of taste like really good raw beef, very close in taste.1 point

Condolences to his family. I met Kirby at the Pilgrimage, and we were both surprised to find out about each other. When he found out that I was from El Dorado, I learned that his dad was one of my grade school principals and his uncle was one of my high school principals. As a college student in Little Rock, I saw his dad walking through the mobile home park where I lived, and we later had many conversations. When I told Kirby this, he talked about their house at an old runway site two blocks from my residence. I said, "Yes, I visited there several times." I mentioned the noise on Saturday nights from the Benton Speedway races, and he laughed and we told stories back-and-forth. RIP, Kirby. SSH1 point

To contradict some of the opinions here, I was in a similar position and decided to replace the amplifier portion of my receiver with an Outlaw 7500. It was a simple and seamless upgrade. HOWEVER, my ears could not tell the difference with the soundtracks I listened to. Although many say that you can achieve greater soundstage and the headroom will undoubtedly give better response, in my application, the difference with my RF-7's was negligible using my unscientific measurement methods. In retrospect, the money spent only helped satisfy my upgrade needs. Time might have been better spent determining frequency response of the room and doing the appropriate treatments. (Too bad I don't have the tools nor the expertise in this area)1 point
-
Another newbie question: I have a Denon 4802 - Theoretical 125W x 7 powering the entire HT. It works just fine, but I don't feel that the sound is outstanding and the soundstage just doesn't jump at me. There is no science behind my evaluation, just a gut feeling. Since I don't listen at high levels, does anyone believe an Aragon 3005 (which I can get at a good price) will significantly help with my situation? I know there are many factors, but just thoughts in general. Option 2 would be to save the money and invest in sound treatments. Any opinions?1 point
-
I'm sorry but I don't understand what a Fathom subwoofer has to do with getting best sound from RF-7's. Bass has never been an issue for the system (I have Velodyne+RSW15), but without the subs, I've found the RF-7's to be a bit lifeless and having a bit of a gap in the midrange. I've blamed amplifier and room/accoustics already, so my next step might be to give DeanG x-over network a shot. Other suggestions welcomed.1 point
-
Just wanted to update everyone that helped me with the issue of RF-7 sounding a bit "dull". Maybe this is a placebo affect, but I just purchased an Outlaw 7500 amp and it has helped the sound a bit. The (RC-7) center channel now sounds clearer for home theater. (better mids) But the rest (RF-7's) hasn't dramatically improved. I guess I just threw money out the window, but I feel better knowing that I've got lots of wattage. :-)1 point
-
Thanks to all. I'll try placement, potentially, I need to move off the wall further than RF-3. I guess at the end of the day, I'm trying to justify electronic purchase. I'll try both the move and the amp and let everyone know which one makes the most difference. Tks1 point

I purchased a demo/open box and I have no problems with damage to aesthetics of the speaker. What I would like to know is whether the performance (audio fidelity) of the speaker has been damaged.1 point
