  1. We've had tremendous winds the past few days (& nights). Not my pics, but here's what 50+mph winds are like on the lake. So windy & noisy now... can't sleep.

  5. Good eye again! Local (news) shots from yesterday. Chicago is the Windy city... & we are on the other side of that. So, plenty of wind here as well. Yesterday up to 60mph winds bringing 20 foot+ waves all along the shore from St. Joe to Luddington. I love the Lake.

  6. Good morning and Happy Friday. Very chilly morning here but supposed to hit 60 Sat. and Sun. before it dips again. Can't trust the Weather Witch. Should be an interesting day. Finally gonna replace our antique wall oven for a new one. Our cook top crapped out on Thanksgiving day year before last and I'm determined that won't happen with the oven. Fingers and toes all crossed that the new one fits the space perfectly, or at least without mods of any kind. just have to be careful that I don't trip over all the crossed toes. Gonna kick it up a notch for 15 minutes on Sat. Better Half bouthe dayght me 15 min behind the wheel of a Lambo for my b-day in September and tomorrow's the dayI get to drive it. She found a deal on Groupon of all places. Never heard of such a thing before but should be a kick. Nismo - great pics. Where did you get them? I remember a vacation off Lake Michigan as a kid but never say anything like that. Incredible. Enjoy the day gang.

  8. I'm a water guy, never lived anywhere without the Lake or Ocean nearby. The pics (not mine) are from local news sources from yesterday. Good eye DizRotus! I'm basically straight across form you, on the other side. You are right, the 1st shot is South Haven... the other 2 are Muskegon. I'm actually in between... closer to Big Red (but its further back in the channel & protected somewhat).

  9. Turd. Seriously, travel safely. Happy Friday all. I MIGHT finally get the granite guys out to the house tonight. Between them and the cabinetmakers I've been pretty much at a stand still on my bathroom remodel. Looks like I've finally found someone that works as slow as I do. How fitting. Both vendors do nice work though so I can't complain too loudly. No way this will be done by Christmas especially with us being gone all Thanksgiving week.

  20. I hate those things. I told my wife that if I wanted to check out grocery purchases I'd apply for a job at the store. I'll happily stand in line for a person to check me out thinking if enough people do it, it might save a job.

  23. It seems that there's a great deal of interest among Klipsch speaker owners to try a low power tube amp to get a first hand experience of what all the excitement is about. At the same time, I'm hearing a lot of "I don't know if I can do it" comments as well. So, to take some of the edge off, here's a link to part 1 of Steve Deckert building his Zen Triode amp. I suggest that everyone interested watch the entire series which he has up on Youtube. It will acquaint you with the tools used, as well as basic point to point wiring techniques. If you can solder decently (and there are dozens of videos online showing you how- it just takes a little practice), and have reasonable mechanical skills, you too can build an amp. And just think of the satisfaction you will have the first time you power up the amp and get treated to the best sound you have ever experienced with your Klipsch speakers! Can you imagine that this is possible with an investment of only around $300? It will make you wonder why you spent a fortune on commercial solid state gear. After watching the videos, post your questions and concerns. There are enough builders on here now to easily take you through any part of the build process you want more information about, or need help with. There's no reason to vacillate any longer- just jump in and do it! Maynard

  24. If you have a Vizio Smart TV it is tracking whatever you watch, and then the company is selling the info (in aggregate they say) to other companies. Here's a link on how to turn it off: http://www.vizio.com/smartinteractivity Don't worry it will not affect anything on your TV, streaming whatever. It's just spyware. The funny thing is, after I disabled it, I could swear the quality of my picture got better. If you experience the same, I'd be interested in knowing.

  27. I have never participated in, or wanted to join, in the disgraceful orgy of excess that is Black Friday. I understand that for some folks it is an essential part of their holiday shopping, but considering people have actually died in the attempt to secure a bargain on some consumer good, I will refrain, yet again, from attending.

  29. Originally I built the network using Obbligato Oil film cap. I thought they are very nice too! Both are a HUGE step ahead from the AL-3 network which sounds so dry and harsh. All hook up wires are solid core pure silver in teflon tubes. High purity silver (avoid silver plated copper) does not sound bright or harsh, on the contrary, there is a great sense of wetness and calmness in sound.

  31. May be I can post a picture of mine here. La scala bass bin 90 degree rotated to damp the side panel vibration by its own weight without using braces. Mid horn replaced by Azura 300hz Le Cleac'h flare and placed right on ear level, with K55v double phase plug version, tweeter replaced by B&C DE120 on $8 PRV tractrix horn from Parts Express. Gave up the orignal AL-3 network and I diy a Type A crossove using russian paper in oil k75-10 capacitors.

  32. I like to follow the prices of used Klipsch speakers. I don't know why, I don't buy and sell them, except occasionally for myself, it just interests me. If there is such a thing as a typical fair market price, this is it. Heresy's for $400 is about what they go for. If you find them for $300 you got a deal, $500 and you paid too much. La Scala pricing drives me nuts. I'm always wrong on them.

  35. I am not sure what the point of this thread is, but the DCM-50 is a great sounding driver. Every driver available has dips and peaks, some more than others. I think it all comes down to the sound. I have seen a lot of graphs, and to this date I still can't hear them. I have also heard systems EQ'd near ruler flat - (lifeless) Ill take a bit of deviation any day over that. The K-55 is a good driver as well. If you are happy with the sound you are getting then stick with it. Dave

  36. I bought a washer today. After asking around I learned of a guy that actually builds them locally by himself. An entrepreneur of sorts. He touts his machine as an appliance of the future, an item that will be in every working persons home in the near future. A machine that will compete head-to-head with anything imported from other countries. There are no electronics involved which will improve reliability and negate the extra cost of extended warranties. I included a picture so that y'all can see you're future. If anyone is interested in obtaining one of these futuristic devices just let me know. The guy has no contact information, he lives off the grid in a van down by the river. Well you do live in Alabama... Yeah, but I try not to brag about it too much. Keith

  44. I copied my round up post over from this thread, please list any other LaScala mods, threads and parts sources. https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/149442-lascala-sonic-detail-improvement-for-only-22098/page-7#entry1926774 My LaScalas are circa 1980 Stock AA crossovers If I want to make improvements or changes in incremental steps, this is what I understand: Based on the above posts, and a conversation (2-3 years ago) with B Crites and the Klipsch factory support guy, the drivers in the LaScala don't wear out under normal circumstances. The capacitors, on the other hand do have an end of life, the transformer and inductor rarely fail (it would probably require an amp incinerating failure to fry the inductor or transformer). First: Update the 3 caps on the AA crossover, from the schematic in the pinned section. Stock: Sonicaps from Crites or others inc Parts Express brand. To me, stock always sounded very good 2x 2uF capacitors 1x 13uF Alternative Crossover update to lower the volume mids by 3db aka 50% decrease in power to Squawker. This is done to flatten the output across the bass and mids? I currently use an EQ to add output at the 400Hz point and rolling off into the up and down freqs from this point. 2x 2uF caps 1x 6.8 uF cap Both of these updates-mods are stand-alone and can be listened to and evaluated without further mods or repairs. Second This step could be either replace the K-77 (matched ?) phenolic tweeters with the Crites CT-125 EV driver with custom Crites Lens and titanium diaphragm. OR Replace the woofer with the Crites stamped Woofer $$, or Eminence Kappa 15C $, also mentioned above is the K-44 Factory $$$ woofer. http://www.parts-exp...-4-ohm--290-459 Both the tweeter and the woofer "upgrades" are standalone changes and require no mods to the crossover or anything else. Third If the K-77 is replaced with the Crites CT 125, as an option after moving to the CT-125.....the crossover point between the Squawker and the CT-125 can be lowered to take advantage of the increased range of the CT-125. Thread on CT-125 topic, one of many? https://community.kl...rs-in-la-scala/ Thread on Crossovers https://community.kl...pgrade-options/ Volti take on LaScala http://www.klipschup...upgrades2.shtml More horns + ALK http://www.alkeng.com/trachorn.html Alethia's take on custom crossovers http://www.aletheiaa...m/Services.html Crossover Options with CT-125: Do nothing leave at 400 and 6,000Hz, replace crossover 400 and 4,500 Hz, somehow modify existing crossover to 400 and 4,500. Forgot to mention the ALK Universal, I'm sure there are others.... The existing crossover may be modified, I don't know how. OR The AA crossover can be replaced with a new A 4500 from Crites http://www.critesspe...00-crossov.html "Problem with this is that the K-55 mid-range driver is pressed really hard to reach 6000hz. It would be much more linear in it's operation if the highest frequencies it has to reproduce were in the 4500hz area." Note: I'm guessing that PK the Designer was aware of this, and perhaps no better option was available than the EV K-77 tweeter, AND OR the mid-range K-55 is so sweet with the voice that it is better to leave as much of the voice as possible on the K-55 up to 400- 6KHz. Maybe if we had the engineer's notes we could know how the decision was made, I'm sure lots of trial and "does this sound better than"........ My opinion the LaScala: PK was a very good audio engineer, everything was done for a reason. Speakers that sound good, sell better. Was the mid range 400-6,000 intentionally boosted to put the human (Female) voice more forward aka Hear the Angels Singing? The K-55 really makes the angels sing. The low end could be better, a design trade off

  45. Howdy Mike, Hopefully someone else on here knows whether or not that Adcom unit has an impedance matching autoformer in it? In any case, the Pioneer dual-sub is probably a 4 Ohm load by itself if you connect to both pair of binding posts. Once you add (parallel) the additional 6 Ohm load, you would be driving into a 2.5 Ohm load. My guess would be that would be bad for your Fischer 400 EVEN on the 4 Ohm taps. Remember, as the impedance swings with frequency you may be driving your amp into a "dead-short". Not advised. But, what you could try is to run the whole deal "in series/parallel", so for now don't use that adcom thing at all, 1st wire the sub "in series" (you could also "play around" with the series wiring to run it "in-phase or out of phase", try this 1st, run a wire from the positive terminal of the fischer to the first positive terminal on the sub, then run wire from the first negative terminal on the sub to the 2nd positive terminal on the sub. Now run a wire from the 2nd negative terminal on the sub back to the negative terminal on the fisher. What you have now is the sub wired in series with the fisher (16 Ohm load). Now, run a wire from the SAME positive terminal on the fisher to the positive terminal on the LEFT vintage grundig. Run another wire from the negative terminal on the same LEFT vintage grundig back to the negative terminal that is already occupied by the wire from the sub. So for the Left channel you will have a vintage grundig and BOTH drivers of the sub. (16 + 6 = 22/4 = 5.5 Ohm load) Wire the other channel from the Fischer the standard way. Set the Fischer to 4 Ohm impedance and you will be in business. Hope I've helped. Matt. P.S. Just place the sub somewhere between the two Grundigs. you may have to move it around a bit but I think you'd be happy.

  46. His description of her jobs is that she worked as "a domestic". That likely means she was a housekeeper, babysitter, things like that, random jobs inside other people's houses. I guess I didn't realize that Detroit was so progressive that a single black mother could get not just one but three good paying union jobs at the same time, in 1959, in this line of work.
