  2. Free HDTV Today I got started on my antenna install. Parts-Express had antennas on sale so I picked up a couple of them. My boss gave me a used 4 section antenna mast that he salvaged from somewhere. A spool RG6QS and a package of Snap-N-Seal F-Connectors were also required. Where I live I have access to Tampa and Orlando DMAs thus 2 antennas. This is a more or less a preliminary install. I have at least 10' more height to be attained with the mast. It was WAY windy today and I wasn't comfortable being on the roof. One day very soon I'll get back up there and finish the install. Even not yet at full height I get almost 70 channels. Once I get the directionality dialed in and the mast at full height that number should climb to closer to 90. Of course by the time I delete the channels I'll never watch the number will be around 20 or so. This is what they look like: If anybody else would like to do this I used 2 of these: http://www.parts-express.com/antop-v-uhf-272-hdtv-vhf-uhf-outdoor-triple-threat-deep-fringe-yagi-antenna--210-512

  5. They are beautiful. Isn't it amazing how incredibly attached we can become with these creatures, whether they be dogs, cats, etc? I've had many dogs and cats, and the emotional connection that can develop is nothing short of stunning. Some folks don't like dogs, some don't like cats, some don't like pets at all, but my opinion is that they are missing out on a very important relationship that they will never forget. Years back I went to my local Toyota dealer for some parts. As I walked up to the parts dept. a BIG tabby cat came running up to me. He was meowing and rubbing all over my legs. I bent down to pet him and he jumped on my shoulders and was loving all over me like I was his long lost soul.. I couldn't get him off me... it was nuts... One of the service guys I know came out and got him off my shoulders.... I'm like dude what's up with the cat??? He told me he's been hanging around the dealer for a few days. They have been feeding him sandwich bits. While we were talking the cat was still all around my legs loving me. After I came out from the parts dept. he was still there....waiting for me.. He was meowing up a storm...he was telling me his whole life story... Every time I would say something to him he would meow back. It was really funny. Now here is where it gets really crazy... I said to him "hey you want to be a shop cat?" Meow Meow back at me... I said come on then as I started walking across the parking lot to my truck. He was right behind me... meowing away... I get to my truck and open the the driver's door. He jumps into the truck and walks over to the pass seat and sits down!! He was looking at me like OK lets go.. I was blown away I really could not believe what just happend. I was at a loss of just what went down.. I thought this must be a set-up.. this is some kind of trained cat... I'm on a TV show... So now I'm thinking what have I just got my self into.... I looked up at the sky and said "really"..... I looked at the cat in my pass seat and said to him... "OK I guess your gonna be my shop cat". I got into the truck started it up and was driving through the lot... all was good, cat was just chilling there. Once we got on the main road back to the shop he got alittle spooked. He jumped off the seat and went under it. I could hear him meowing... The shop was not to far of a ride just a few miles. When I got to the shop I figured I would open the door and he would jump out and follow me... Not so... I opened the pass door and he jumped out and ran off... Oh shitt now Iv'e done it... I went into the shop and told my wife what went down...She was looking at me like I had three eyes... She got alittle plate and put some milk into it. With in ten minutes he came back around. He lapped up the milk... but you could tell he was unsure of what was happening. I might have been his long lost soul.. but everything was new to him. Once we got him into the office I sat down and that's all it took. He was back on me.. Loving me. Loving me like no other cat has loved me. He was on my neck.. purring loudly. He was in my ear with his nose. It was almost too much.. He would not get off me. Now we could not take him home.. we had three cats at the house.... and this guy was BIG and he was a older cat. So we decided he would live at the shop. Wife went out got him a box some food. Even by the end of the day he really seemed to like it at the shop. The next morning when we came to work I could hear him meowing before I opened the door. It was really funny. I opened the door thinking he would run out... No.. all he wanted was me.. again all over me he really would not leave me alone. In the weeks that followed he made the shop his home... this is were he lived. He was litter trained. He was the master of the workshop. He took to everyone that came into the shop... all the customers.. he had to check them out. There were a few that did not like cats so I had to put him in the bay while they pain there bill. But most wanted him cuz he would love all. He was such a lover that we named him Romeo. We took him to the vet to get him all checked out and get his shots. Even the vet was blown away by this guy... The vet told us he was maybe 8-9 years old or so. He was and older big boy.. Like I said the loving this cat would give was on another level... no he wouldn't hump or anything like that... he was "fixed" But it seemed he couldn't get close enough to you... he had to have human contact.... lots of it..... especially me...lol lol..... He would drool...yes drool, and I mean alot.. when he got to loving ya the drooling would start...it was so bad you had to have a paper towl to wipe it up. Me and Romeo.. we were tight... we had a bond. Some say that cats are not like that... not true in this case.. Romeo lived at the shop allittle over 5 years. He started loosing weight and was not eating right in the later days of his life. The day came were I knew what I had to do. It got to the point where he could hardly walk. It was a very sad day... The bond that I had with animal was like no other... He made the bad days good and the good days better.. Even as I type this I'm a mess.... He was one of my best friends for those 5+ years.... My Romeo I miss him.... MKP :-)

  6. Morning Gang It's FINELY wet, pretty much a constant drizzle all night and still going. Tarheel reminds me, "Peanut time", oh Yeah, Berti's are the Kind. Honey Baked Ham time is my thinking for the week. Cave time, bench project(s) Mr Crow Fabrication, part by part, proving to be more of a pain in the azz than the first one. Buying parts here and there for the first Crow, i had no idea, most of the parts were in a "Finished state". This time round it's carving with a shop vac in one hand and a dremmel in the other Time for a cup and a cookie.

  7. I made one for Christmas a few years back, it was a big hit. My family and I have never had one, so it was something new to us. There goes any chance of a diet. I've got 13 here, but your right I think its supposed to be in the 40s or 50s this weekend. Well since you asked. After breakfast this morning, I am taking my trailer down to storage. Come home get a haircut, do some home work, maybe work in the garage. Then off to surprise bday party for a friend of ours. Tomorrow, finish up what ever homework I have, then into the garage. Nothing else other than that. Hope all have a great weekend, if it goes by too fast there is a three day weekend ahead for most of us. Well for me its a four day weekend. Peace

  8. Good Saturday- It's 27 with a light dusting of snow, but a White Christmas does not appear likely. The high temps this week are predicted to be 40s - 50s with rain. Friday's forecast is 46 and rain. Santa will need foul weather gear.

  12. Actually, dynamic range and "loudness" are on either end of a logarithmic scale: to be louder, you MUST have lower dynamics, etc. It's well known that people prefer music that is merely louder in A-B tests, as little as 0.1 dB difference in loudness. People will statistically pick the louder track as "sounding better" when comparing tracks. However, when the tracks are leveled in loudness carefully other factors (such as higher fidelity) become apparent. Because there is the "auto-gain" function on your iPod, and most people will leave that feature "on", it will automatically level the loudness of each track to some pre-determined average loudness level. Dynamics sound better, up to a point. As you go far past 15 dB crest factor (i.e., average-to-peak, a DR rating of "15" or greater) the music will start to become somewhat disruptive to listen to at casual levels. You'll have to turn it up to near concert volume in order to hear the music clearly, but the loudest sections of the music will prevent people in the room from being able to hold conversations during those loud sections. That's kind of a nutshell view of dynamic range. At low DR ratings (for me, that's anything below "11"), the music starts to become the same loudness all the time - like background noise from a machine. Chris

  13. It is good to see more people taking advantage of "FREE"!. Iv been running my "Ovenrack" UHF for pushing 6 years now, cut the cable a month after install, the family has really not missed anything. Netflix, VuDu can provide just about anything you really miss. And just think, you cut "The Cable" and you NO longer support Momma June & Honey BooBoo, you have done something good for America This pic is of my "OvenRack" UHF, 6 years running, next time i feel like messing around with the TV channels i will "Double Up" on another one of these facing west, Frisco is spotty @85 miles away.

  21. It sounds to me like that you will hear a difference in the sound. I will almost guarantee that the capacitors used in the amp were Chinese knockoffs and needed upgrading. Running in triode mode is always a good thing with efficient speakers that only need a few watts. I'm using forte II's and just redid the crossovers and tweeter diaphrams. Just waiting to get off my butt and redo the veneer.I have everything sitting in the basement calling to me daily. Matt gave me the idea of redoing them after seeing his done. I'm doing mine in Brazilian Rosewood and redid the covers already.

  22. Ok, what am I missing here? Why is it important if you can flex your door or make a table jump? Sounds like when you see a car drive by with his trunk rattling from his bazooka tube sub. I personally have sealed subs because they fit in my environment. Although PWK clearly felt horns are superior he didn't completely write off DR as evidenced by the Heresy, Cornwall, and extended Heritage line. I love horns as well, but DR fits in some applications. There are clearly merits to both designs but why does it seem that the issue has just become how LOUD will it go? Most of us listen to music in the 70-80db range with peaks around 95-100. I would imagine a lot of subs would have no problem at those levels. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  25. Thanks for the tips, Jim Matt has been awesome with me through this whole custom build. Almost daily updates with photos and a short description of the progress. It has been quite interesting and he has really made me feel like I am a part of this whole build. Much appreciation to Matt and Tool Shed Audio!!! He is burning the tubes in tonight and I am sure he will guide me in the amps proper break-in. Matt says the amps performance is jaw dropping!!! I think he is nearly as excited as I am with this build. The linestage is going to phenomenal as well. It will have a motorized, remote volume control so I can just sit on my arse and enjoy...

  35. There is no direct radiator subwoofer composed of a single driver cabinet that can beat one good horn loaded sub cabinet with the same size driver. Multiple DR cabinets can approach the performance of horns at the expense of more amplification. Still won't equal the horn in impulse response or modulation distortion (or lack thereof).

  36. Ha, brings to mind back in my day, when i saw/got a deal on speakers, i jumped and got-em, made them fit. I cut my car to hell doing this. Ports from a bandpass box firing through the rear deck, 6.5's in kick panels, tweets in the ac vents, center channel in the ash tray, 6.5's in the doors, 8" in quarter panels, none of that was supposed to fit. "I cut my car to hell doing this" Of course you did, as i have done, there is NOTHING that stood in our way of Kick-Azz-Sound. Sawsall, Tin-snips whatever we had to work with, as you also remember, TOOLS, did not matter, we used whatever we had at the time. End Product? Just exactly what we wanted. And we ONLY read instrucions when something does not look right, that sir is called being an American.

  37. I like both horn loaded and direct radiating for different reasons......with horn loaded have the edge especially in the two-channel dept. I haven't compared them in a home theatre environment yet. My experience so far comparing the two in my rooms..... Direct radiating: 1.Much more difficult to integrate than horn loaded. Constantly fiddling song to song, album to album. 2.Tend to sound 'thumpy' (which I like) but doesn't always integrate properly for music. 3.Have an 'air-like' punch to them. Which I also like but lends itself to HT and not so much for music. Some music it sounds really cool but not natural. Can be very artificial, fake sounding....but cool. Horn Loaded Tuba: 1. They blend so easily into the mains like no other sub I've ever had. Once they were dialed in, I haven't had to mess with them since. 2. They're so much more musical it isn't even funny. Cleaner and more natural sounding giving the music better fidelity which is the whole point for me. 3. Direct radiating subs I typically have to cut-off pretty low for music. Horns I can cut-off much higher.....punchier, more musical bass. 4. Horns are BIG but in a corner it's not an issue. Think K-horn. Sometimes I just prefer the characteristics of a direct radiating sub depending on mood. However for accuracy, fidelity and natural sounding bass the horn loaded THTLP has really impressed me for two-channel playback. I will also say that I have never gone the DIY direct radiating route. Maybe someday.....seems they would be very easy to build and would be fun.

I'm not sure what I'll do with them.....it should give me a good project over winter. Would a pair of 511B's work well for 2 ch listening.....at moderate to high volume? I might even try a 3-way setup with these....guess I'll need a pair of xovers too. I'll keep y'all posted. I'm sure I'll need help in getting these setup! Thanks, Hogfan

  42. Is a horn sub a good match for the new electronic stuff, both music and movies? Sure, but most HT crowd just want the walls to shake and do not care that much for the quality of the bass and certainly the little woman wants the sub to disappear from sight. Certainly there a few audiophiles that want better but they are in the minority. Two channel listening audiophiles tend to want better not quantity.i wouldn't say most. I'd say 50/50. With a lot of the nicer offerings from the ID companies people are getting quality bass for a 700+ product. Trust me when I say ALL the guys I know that have stacks of 18's prefer quality bass. Just cause we have a lot doesn't mean we want quantity. We like headroom. Plain and simple. Just a different approach to less distortion as having a horn is to you. And also my 18's take up much less room than a horn.

  48. Thad, Let me make sure I understand your post. I THINK YOU HAVE A FEW TYPOS. as of today, you store all of my music on a DIY homebrew (beer?) NAS (did you mean NASA?) called unRAID (unpaid?). on that server I have an application called subsonic which enables me to play music on phone and computer when I'm not on the home network - transcodes everything to mp3 on the fly in order to save bandwidth. at home I am using a raspberry pi b+ (second quality desert?) running Archphile (another name for the crapping pot thread?). It's a very minimalistic package, but connects directly to my NAS (navel?) (wirelessly!) with network shares and plays back (every?) bit perfect to my usb dac through a modified version of MPD (Memphis Police Department?). it also includes a module to enable Airplay streaming from my iOS devices. i use an app (appetizer?) called "beets" for importing my music. it queries the musicbrainz database and cleans up all of the tags, maintains a database of my entire library, and renames the files/embeds artwork/etc. THINK I GOT IT NOW!
