  5. Audiophiles are Audiophiles! We are Klipschophiles! Who cares about those people that tend to spend all their money on speakers with small and inefficient drivers with restricted dynamic range? who can impose his metrology to people to measure which sound is better? sound should be admired by the listener so it's a subjective matter. To me a La Scala sounds better that those mega dollar speakers out there

  7. There sure is a lot of great people here and I don't "live" here near as much as I used to, because I too have heavily modded K's that are frowned upon by so many. I rarely even participate when I find threads with people modding drivers or horns. I have to thank many of the people here that have steered me towards different components or custom built networks, etc. etc. by some of the entities that get punished for their efforts of wanting more or pushing the envelope. These guys don't have to follow a financial model of marketing and selling to the masses, they simply try and extract every little bit of PWK's designs. Its a fine line to walk and discuss actually improving many areas of our speakers with different components and what not, but to deny that there are improvements or consider it to be blasphemy to be made on they models or designs is shortcoming. We are all here at the Klipsch forum for a reason and we all hold PWK designs very dear and in many cases his designs are the very reason that so many carry the passion for Klipsch speakers their entire life. I will never own anything other than a Klipsch speaker and I think the man himself would be very proud to see people taking his designs and constantly try to improve on them because I believe this is what he did his entire life.

I also agree with M_Klipsch that 465 to 485hp is a nice number for a daily driver and can still get you into trouble. This is an incredible time for performance cars and I highly recommend to everyone, don't miss out on this era if you can.

  12. True, and I do understand that concern. That's the risk we take when we buy things, even on the forums though. There's no penalty really if something doesn't go the way we want it to during transit or prior unless PayPal steps in. It's a luck of the draw thing. My XDA could have been DOA, so could my Fusion (both of them). The Oppo I bought could be in the same boat. We take a risk on second hand - and I'd like to think that for the most part, people are not up to stingyness. But you are correct, caution should always be used. OP - your room is either similar to or just a shy bit smaller than mine. Virtually any good amp/preproamp configuration should do you solid. If cost is a concern and you really don't want to go used - I'd either purchase an AVR like I mentioned through A4L, or wait and see if Emotiva posts some more goodies on their own eBay page: jadedesigns. You can also poke around the forums here for an amp or receiver for sale, or see if some of the other forums have anything (Emotiva's Lounge for example). Patience is your friend in this hobby, and regardless of who is saying what, we all agree on that.

  13. @Max2 well said. No matter how it's phrased, there are those who feel any suggestion that "improvements" or "upgrades" can be made to PWK's designs is blasphemy. IMO, PWK was an excellent engineer who designed excellent products that could be manufactured and sold at a profit I suspect he would acknowledge that improvements could be made, especially given new designs and materials available today, and especially if there were no budget constraints. That said, all "upgrades" are not equal. Many here perceived the implications of some modifiers as arrogance to even suggest that they knew more than PWK, or Roy Delgado. IMO, they don't know more than Klipsch engineers, but they have the luxury of making changes that would not be commercially viable. Hobbyists have a right to modify their speakers. If they perceive an improvement, good for them. They should not for an instant suggest or believe that they know more than PWK or Roy Delgado. It seems that Greg Roberts caused people to infer that he was implying knowledge superior to PWK and Roy. If he was, he's mistaken. IMO, he has taken PWK's designs and applied exceptional woodworking skills and a cost no object approach to components to produce gorgeous speakers that Klipsch could never -- would never -- produce and sell for a profit. I have no doubt that Volti products sound as good as they look, at least to their customers. I also have no doubt that Roy Delgado has forgotten more about speaker design than Greg Roberts will ever know. If Klipsch were in a position to produce such boutique speakers, IMO, they would design, test and build speakers better than Volti. The reality is they address different markets. Go ahead and choose Volti, just don't suggest that Greg Roberts knows more than PWK or Roy; he doesn't.

  30. I too feel Greg Roberts would probably agree with most, if not all, of what I posted. Another thing to consider when criticizing Volti, Shinall, Speakerlab and the like, is that enthusiasts, who might be prejudiced against Klipsch and/or horns, are exposed to horn speakers they might like. Audiophools -- snobs -- will never concede that Klipsch, or any horn-loaded speakers, sound better than their mega-dollar speakers.

  33. I need to be blunt on this one. The OP stated the K-Horns sounded great when he listened to them at the seller's place. He then brings them home and the bass is lacking. In attempt to solve this, he gets new mid-drivers, new tweeters, and a tube amp. The problem persists. The problem is clearly room interactions or the geometry of the placement. In spite of this, folks continue to suggest swapping the electronics. I am afraid the collective thinking has become very muddled.

Greg had the vision to see an opertunity to do something he enjoys while making a few bucks and others recent him for doing so. I say good for him for having the balls. He really is not vying for the same customers as Klipsch for the most part. Most of his customer base would put there nose way up in the air at anything Klipsch! Face it in the general audiphile world Klipsch is not all that well thought of I'm surprised you don't own the Vittora speakers! Greg's stuff really does sound great.

Type of music you listen to, and level you listen 3. Your other components. Amps, preamps, source, turntable? 4. Vinyl, CD, streaming, etc? 5. Your budget Any other info. Photos of the room.....

  40. Nobody in their right mind is going to put a 6-8 foot tall speaker in a small room. Reflections can be easily treated as they should have been in the first place. Driver diameter does not mean much, it can easily be turned down. I call Bullshit on just about the whole article. As long as you can get a proper blending of all the drivers in a triangular seating position in relation to the loudspeakers i see no negatives beyond this general rule.

  41. Reading the above, it is fairly clear that this is an issue of room acoustics and geometry. Please stop spending your money to change the electronics or components on the K-Horns. Some of us would be in a better position to advise if we had some specifics about what the problems are. If at all possible do you have a friend with a setup to use REW or some of the other acoustic measurement systems. This is not a quick measure and does require some time and effort, however it provides valuable and specific information that would eliminate the guesswork. Without some measurements, you will probably just get a bunch advice about "beeswax capacitors" and the "need for tube equipment" (not that you won't get that advice anyway). Good luck, -Tom

  42. The above mentioned stepson has a good friend that finalizes the final tune parameters at Procharger, just down the road from me in suburban KC. I have spoken with Erik numerous times on a Procharger install for my car and although they do not perform installs at PC the "right" people can be made available. He said a 392 Challenger will safely make 600-620 at the wheels, which is right at Hellcat rear wheel power. And more if I care to invest in stoughter parts, which I do not. But alas, I'm basically listening to the Procharger disguised as a pair of Jubilees. And really the cars pretty damn quick as it is so I'm probably smart in leaving well enough alone.

  43. The DC resistance of the K33 is 3.2 ohms, the inductor in the crossover raises this value to about 3.7 ohms, if yours measures much different than this you have a problem with either your meter or your speakers. On original Cornwalls the ring terminals connecting the crossover with the input terminal strip can be a source of problems. The tinsel leads on the woofer may be oxidized and in need of replacement. The real issue people want an answer to is: Do I hook it to my 4 ohm tap, or the 8 ohm tap? The minmum AC impedance is about 5.5 ohms so it won't likely hurt anything no matter which one you hook it to. Try both taps. Sometimes the bass sounds better on the 4 ohm tap. Sometimes the mids and highs sound better on the 8 ohm tap. Leave the speaker on the one that sounds the best.
