  1. It’s not the question that’s restrictive, but the reception.

  4. I was thinking of using a wedge in the bass cabinet. But you're right, I could also secure a thick plank to the side of the bass cabinet with clamps. Logically, this should reduce the resonance (if indeed it's the bass cabinet I'm hearing) from the side walls.

  6. I was very happy with the sound of my vintage LS before they were sanded down on the outer side walls. So i see no reason why the panels of the doghouse and the bottom and top need to be reinforced. i'm only concerned with the sidewalls. if the braces don't do any good i'll reinforce the sidewalls with additional thin multiplex panels.

  7. Thank you Mike. As often, your assistance is thorough but also very technical 😉. Unfortunately, I still lack the technical insight to fully understand everything. However, I understand your explanation that the resonance I hear may not be from the speaker but due to its placement. I've already tried moving the speakers around, and it hasn't had much impact on the resonance I hear. But next week, during my three-week vacation, I will experiment by placing the speakers lengthwise to see what effect it will have. Thank you for pointing this out. Sorry, I can't tell if this is a dig or a well-intentioned wink. With my comment about the La Scala 1 being known for its resonance, I meant nothing negative, in any case.

  8. Yes, they resonate. Bracing will help a lot but it won’t tame some of the irregularities in frequency response that are inherent to the LS due to compromises in the horn expansion. if you have an active DSP setup that is capable of some parametric EQ adjustments, you can try the following settings that are known to ameliorate the response of the stock LS bass bin. 87hz, Q:3.5, +5dB 148Hz, Q:8, -7dB 380Hz, Q:5.5, +2dB

  13. You can see the measurements made by Stereophile here and as can be seen there are some mechanical(sidewall) and acoustical resonances of it’s woofer horn in the 100Hz - 200Hz region that we need to be aware of. https://www.stereophile.com/content/klipsch-la-scala-al5-loudspeaker-measurements They show using a plastic-tape accelerometer attached to the center of the woofer horn’s sidewall (3) High Q resonances at (~125Hz, ~250Hz, ~500Hz). What signal type and level was used to produce the results aren’t mentioned in the article so how this relates to reproducing music isn’t fully clear for me. How audible and frequent this is in normal use while listening to music is questionable because any potential resonance becoming audible will depend on the exciting frequencies being present in the music and at what amplitude level and length of time applied to the resonance for it to develop it’s maximum audible effect. Regardless of all the causes there is an apparent peak of up to +7db in the frequency response of the La Scala woofer-horn in the region between (100Hz - 200Hz) of it’s spectrum that we should be aware of. IMHO based on experiences having owned both the original La Scala model as well a the La Scala AL5 is that it is very important to pay attention to how we position the speaker relative to (SBIR) Speaker Boundary Interference Response and Room Modes. What we must avoid is any additional SPL increase in this region of (100Hz - 200Hz) due to reinforcement from the Speaker-Boundary distance and Room Mode Coupling. IMHO if proper attention is given to the speaker’s location by again avoiding any additional reinforcement in the (100Hz - 200Hz region) then the La Scala Sidewall resonance potential hasn’t been an audible issue for me when listening to music. miketn

  20. A couple observations... There are some really, really smart people there, including a lot of Klipscheads. IIRC, the resonance in the LS is partly to do with the parallel doghouse and cabinet side walls. The Peavey FH-1 doesn't have that issue. Probably something they learned in designing them after the La Scala came out. -- Now, I've been here 10 years longer than you... doesn't mean I know more, doesn't mean I know less. I'm here for all the friends I've met, and to pass on what real knowledge I've gained, hopefully to counter what is sometimes wrong information. It looks like the majority of posts are in the lounge section, which is mostly us being friends, not helping out with Klipsch questions. Those posts have really tapered off in the past few months.

  23. Chronicles of a Diamond is the second studio album by American band Black Pumas, released on October 27, 2023, through ATO Records. Since I enjoyed their first lp I almost HAD to give their second a shot. They said they were pressed for time working on this one and the only thing I can say is they'd better budget their time a bit better. Blowing off side 2. Just say NO applies here or maybe I'm missing something Ok, @KROCK WHY did you buy that new turntable mat. I had one for ya already! 😂 😂 They must have felt guilty cause mine had this one in it! lol

  24. I started with Heresy 1 then onto Forte II, Cornwall I, Chorus II and KHorn AK3. My latest setup is an active two-way with JBL 4648 LF cabs (think 4722) with giant BFI Bullfrog 15x30 inch horns using PRV D290-pyB drivers. The room has been tuned flat by the DBX PA2 RTA mic and wizard. Rest of the system is Pioneer SPEC. This is my first two way setup and it's absolutely incredible. Stage width is massive. Depth of the stage is better than anything I've ever owned. The system is dangerous in that it can get extremely loud but it's so clean your brain doesn't tell you to turn it down. My .02 worth.

  31. Seems they got the 4 best teams? What if we could of had a Florida State vs Alabama game this Saturday to settle things? What would the final score be on that one? 45-0 Alabama maybe? By game time New Years Day the line on Michigan vs Alabama will be even money I suspect. That's gonna be a hell of a game right there.

  32. Good review from a member. Hard to go wrong at that price. The tubes add a touch of 2nd harmonics which is always a good thing in my opinion.

  33. I think I did, in a round about way, in the 2nd post. Not sure I've heard the finest tube amps, but I've owned and heard several. I miss tubes from a visual point of view. Always fun to bask in the glow while listening in the dark. I don't miss hours of my life spent obsessing over what if there is just one more tube I've not tried and it is the magic one that parts the heavens. I fully realize that is my personality, not the fault of the amps/tubes. IMHO, @richieb is wise beyond his years (which are numerous) with all things amps. We joined the forum about the same time. He has probably had 5X the number of amps I have. Follow him down the amp trail and you probably can't go wrong. If you end up lost in the woods it will have been a fun trip.

  35. I have a pair of Heresy II's and an Academy for HT. I am curious about what is a good surround recommendation (I need a wall mount side surround pair, and I have rear surrounds in a bookshelf). I would like to know the preferred surrounds for these speakers. I see SS-1 and RS-25 surrounds on the used market; are these appropriate? Thx!

  36. Well I picked up the '89 vintage Heresy II's. I would not call them "mint", but good shape and the cabinets will refinish nicely (all corners/edges good, with minor imperfections). I picked them up with an Academy center channel for a little over 800 cdn (about 720 US these days?). The center is mint. I want to replace the binding posts on the speakers though. One of them is broken off, and, well, why not! Does anyone know of a good replacement? Is soldering required (not a big deal... but I would need to clear some space for them)? Any idea if these are suitable: http://www.takefiveaudio.com/mall/shopexd.asp?id=533 Beyond that, I am really enjoying these speakers. I had an Axiom home theater setup. It was small, out of the way, and did the job. However, I wanted more dynamics and got a bit nostalgic (first speakers I bought at 16 were Cornwalls.. then went to Klipschorns... then, yes, I strayed :-). Some things that surprised me: o I always found the Heresys a bit harsh. These are anything but (I am driving them with a modest Anthem MCA5). I wonder if the metal domes so prevalent today have now rendered the Heresy to being a relatively warm speaker! I will also try them with a Yamaha CR2020 and HK930 I have. o They are not as good at low volumes as I expected. They need to be pushed to come alive. They remind me of maggies here. o My main speakers are 'stats (Martin Logan CLS IIz's). They provide a good contrast (and I like that!). To me the stats are far more transparent. They image better, and instruments seem to float (I have some dpl12 based subs and custom crossover/eq to make the stats full range). On the other hand, the stats compress around 95 db and it is noticeable. The Heresies just open up more. Hearing a cranked Hammond B3 on these things is well, just plain fun! o The Academy center is great. It timbre matches well (better than my Axioms, which had identical tweeters.. which I find weird). I also found moving to a center with good bass response has been a huge improvement. Concert DVDs have a lot more realism. Thanks (sorry for rambling... primary reason for posting was the binding post question).

  37. I built a custom pair of subs based on the Adire DPL12. They are sealed, and crossed over at 80hz. I also have eq on the subs for pretty good room response.

  38. Nice set-up! I have a Mitsubishi and rack similiar to yours. I just shifted my center speaker over, so that it equally spaced between the mains. Looked strange at first but I got use to it. Something else to consider.

  39. Are there any architectual features that can be built into the walls or ceiling of a HT to help improve acoustics and cut down on the amount of room treatment that will be needed? Something like stepped or angled walls? Thanks

  40. Besides Master Handbook of Acoustics, are there any other books that can be recommended that cover room treatment for HT? Specifically, one that focuses on how-to solutions. Thanks

  41. How do you determine the placement and the amount of wall you need to cover when using absorption panels, Auralex Pro Panels or similiar? I have seen applications where panels seemed to be placed in random positions and other examples where the entire wall is covered. Since there not cheap, I was wondering if they can be put on the wall spaced? You could save a considerable amount of money if they can be placed, say 6 inches apart or more. At what point would exposed wall between the panels defeat the purpose of using them? Are there any other types of wall treatments to consider? Thanks.

  43. Technical level is very low. I'm looking for something straight-foward, fairly easy to use and learn. I have XP and will be using the software for personal, inventory list for homeowner's insurance, dvd collection, financial records, ect... Instead of having to purchase several software programs, one for dvd collection, one for home inventory, ect... I'd like to find something that I can customize. Thanks

  44. Is 125 watts sufficient for RB-75's or should a 200 wpc amp be used? Thanks
    1 point
  45. The set-up will be used primarily for movies. I have one PB2-Plus now, will get the second after I move. I'm getting impatient with the all the delays and want to go ahead and purchase some of the speakers, 2 RB-75's and RC-7. That's all I have room for at the moment. I've also been considering just using RB-75's instead of RF-7's for the front. The more I read and think about it, with dual subs and not being concerned with music reproduction, the towers shouldn't be needed. Plus, using bookshelves instead of RF-7's will save about $1000, which can be put towards an amp or amps. With a HT consisting of 6 RB-75's and RC-7, what would be the appropriate amplification? I'm going with B&K, either 125 or 200 wpc. Thanks

  46. Construction won't be finished for sometime and I'm getting the impression there isn't anyway to know to what extent the walls will need treatment until everything is set-up. I was hoping I'd be able to get a general idea of the costs for my particular room, see if I could work it into the budget, but I guess I'm just getting too far ahead. Thanks again for all the info and advice! I'm sure I'll have many more questions further down the road. Thanks

  47. The 2" thick fiberglass panels you used, are they basically the same as the Pro Panels, same size and wrapped in fabric? Or did you use panels that cover the entire wall, something like 4'x 8' sheets that take the place of sheet rock? Is using heavy, hanging fabric an option? Thanks.
