  1. This is a basic simulation of the LS bass horn in Hornresp. The K33 is in light gray and I’ve plotted the exact same horn in black but substituted the driver specs for those of the Eminence Kappa 15C. as you can see, both drivers show a peak in the 150Hz region with the 15C showing less of a drop in output. You will also note that the 15C gives up a little on the low end to the K33. Even if the sidewalls aren’t resonating(much) there is still going to be that peak in the response which will really honk if given the right(wrong) source material. This peak in the 150Hz region is well documented, and even showed up in the response curves from the stereophile review of the AL-5. Before anybody has a chance to try to pretend that I’m making this up, and that the stereophile measurements aren’t valid(I’m looking at you @OO1 ), I would like to remind you that Roy himself posted the following EQ settings for use with the LS bass section when using an active DSP crossover. 87hz, Q:3.5, +5dB 148Hz, Q:8, -7dB 380Hz, Q:5.5, +2dB I think it’s hard to realize what you are missing until you have a chance to hear the LS bass without that peak.

  3. Randy, I am here to gain knowledge, help others, and enjoy what others share. Members using the ignore option would be very detrimental to others who are trying to gain facts. As with a lot of threads, you have a large number of posts, most of which are arguing and insulting many others who have, individually or combined, more experience and knowledge than me and or you... A lot of your entries contradict themselves (there is no resonance to how to fix the resonance) I was told that we have two ears, two eyes, and only one mouth, and it is not a mistake by God or Mother Nature. I learned a long time ago that: 1) I don't know it all and I learn from others if I listen 2) That I gain credibility when I admit when I am wrong (and sometimes that's not easy because I am not made of straw) Happy New Year to you, hope you're doing well.

  14. 1 inch MDF panels all around is more than enough to eliminate any remote possibility of resonance from an AL-5 wood cabinet , this thread is about a bad recording with noise the OP 's issue has nothing to do with the cabinet of the AL-5 ......0

  15. This ^^^ is what you said in August 2021. Now you are saying that there isn't any resonance. On 12/16/2023 at 6:46 AM, Flevoman said: is there resonance

  19. Higher, to a small amount. This subject has been debated since the Caveman days. From what I recall, there is too much to consider, such as the resistance of the cables, the construction of the speaker, the EMF produced by the speaker... and more, than to go by only the numbers. It seems to hold to be true when looking at the DF of tube amps or the loved KH730 Twin (DF of 30). I am not sure what curve it produces on a zy plane, but the gain on the x plane moves very little while adding a lot of y. I have read that anything past 40 is close to meaningless and is more for sales literature than for how well the system will sound. Knowing this, I still want a Sansui AU A907MR. Not because of the 0Hz to 300kHz, THD of only 0.003%, DF of 150, or that it weighs close to 75 lb, but because it sounds great.

  27. Ok, it's official. My sleep schedule is toast. 5:15 then 4:15AM I'm crashin? Up at 2PM yesterday and noon today? Sucks to be me. Was going out tonight to make a guest appearance but decided to stay home. The wimmen can slobber all over someone else tonight. Covid's flaring up again along with mucuspalooza. Who knows what's out there and I don't want it! Now I'm trying to decide what I'm going to wear to the living room to spin and watch all the Dick Clark wannabes. 😂 Slipped downtown to fuel up and the State Troopers are out in full force. Saw 3 stopped cars here in town. The local guys were just crusin as usual. That pretty much iced the cake for me but I drink diet when I'm out anymore. Just don't wanna deal with morons. Ohio passed the recreational pot law this fall and right now the State is weaseling around on HOW they're gonna do it cause they don't want it. Ppl are burnin right in front of the cops in most places and it's legal. As soon as they crawl behind the wheel it's a different story. They nail 'em. Never saw so many morons in my life hence the field day for law enforcement. Funny watching it all unfold til it's finally signed, sealed and delivered. Just another slice of life from Duckburg. 💪😂

  28. I am overwhelmed, where I live now the house is on a hill, from my living room I have a view of about 5 miles into the depth. So I was able to see the New Year's Eve fireworks from hundreds of thousands of people, it was a sea of lights, incredibly moving and beautiful to watch. Pitty that I didn´t took pics , there wasn´t any time for that . I had to watch .

  32. good to know , replace with a 0.50A Polyswitch
    1 point
  33. That’s because there is a 100 ohm resistor in parallel with the polyswitch. When the polyswitch tripped, the signal was rerouted through the resistor. That you can hear sound through it means you didn’t blow a diaphragm. It’s the correct part. You’ll be fine. I would use clips for heat sinks when you solder the polyswitch in.

  39. I’m sorry that you have a problem with reading comprehension. The author states that they left the AL5 on the floor because it was so heavy. The measurement with the woofer disconnected was a a standard frequency response measurement and the author is acknowledging that the floor reflections were not allowing him to get an accurate picture of the response of the speaker which is why he only included the midrange and tweeter on that graph.

  41. Unless I'm mistaken, putting them at the midpoint raises the resonant frequency by two. I think you might be better off by offsetting them by a tiny amount (1/8", 1/4"?) from center. Then you present two different resonant frequencies, one higher than fundamental / 2 and one lower than fundamental / 2. Am I right on this? The amount you'd have to move them off-center would mean that you couldn't visibly tell they weren't centered.

  42. If you look up the Stan White, Inc. Loudspeaker Company you'll notice that the term "multi-flare" is used. It's a design feature that utilizes radii to make transitions within the folding of the horn. The 4-D Millennium was a large, dual 15" JBL driver, rear-loaded system similar to the Jensen Imperial that utilized the concept. I was fortunate to trade emails with Stan before his death. Apparently during a hi-fi show in Chicago, engineers from nearby Jensen were pawing all over his 4-D Millennium. A year later the Imperial was introduced, a copy without the so-called "mutli-flare" which, at the time, was a patent protected concept. You have got to LOVE Janice, the model in the picture below, classic 50s marketing. Stan White made a business decision that haunted him, to raise capital, he gave Eddie Bracken, the actor, control of the company. The relationship didn't work well and Bracken hobbled Stan. Stan was a degreed EE and a smart guy. As he mentioned to me, he got even with Bracken by outliving him.

  43. Nah, I still have my SS-1 surrounds and my KSB 3.1's as rears =] I'd love to hear the 4722N. I've always felt like the CornScala (or more like a CornJub) is like a clone of the 4722N. It must rock! On the other hand, you will be leaving the Klipsch fold...

  44. LOL true but I already noted that.....in order to hit that low you have to spend alot more than $300 IMHO unless you build your own. But me personally even though I know you get more bang for your buck from DIY I like being able to depend on a manufactor to troubleshoot and fix my sub not to mention I don't have the required tools or skills or time to build a sub. But your subs do look impressive. But I wouldn't call anything that can't hit 10 or 15hz unusable......I wish you were nearby because I do want to experience those lows before I buy my SVS...... I had a pair of a7s-650s before I built the THTs. That's (4) 13av.2 drivers (13", 28mm xmax) in sealed enclosures with 2600 watts of power. A single THT was louder and sounded better =] Horn subs are where its at imho.
