Just wanted to let you know, I am going to be trying a rather 'old fashioned' method of coffee 'cooking' this weekend! Something I have NEVER done before.... But, I will give it a try and include photos during the process and a report on the taste as well ... See you all Saturday morning.........(unless you drop by this evening over in RTM, which is my hangout on the weekends after 8pm. eastern ) ..........Gary

  6. Nice temps here, up in the mid 80s. It's about time. Work is soooo busy, no time for any fun. Am getting to borrow an 8 input interface for recording computer audio, which will be kinda fun. Bruce

  7. Mornin' kids... Been tied up in the office, but the weekend is within reach! I'll likely be working on the honey-do list, or out pullin' weeds in the yard again, but it's therapeutic after being behind a desk all week. For those of you hitting the roads, be safe!

  14. Congrats on the new speakers. Good to hear they meet your expectations and approval. HT is just not HT without a sub.

  15. Congrats on the new speakers! Everybody has their own tastes, I wouldn't worry much about impressing anyone but yourself. I'd recommend holding on to the 30's though for at least a couple weeks while the new speakers settle in and then do one last comparison before letting them go. You might be glad you did, or not, but better to have them on hand just in case. Enjoy the new setup!

  17. Some of these comments are in reference to some of the things stated in the other thread: On many of the Klipsch schematics, it is stated that the parts are measured while on the PCB. That means that proximity effect, or mutual inductance -- is factored in, or part of the design. This is why I tell people not to mess with the coils. When you change their position or relationship to each other, you change the modeled behavior of the network. Klipsch has to meet price points. They're also very aware that 99% of their customers are primarily using these loudspeakers to listen to bullets whizzing by and explosions. Most within the HT community are not critical listeners like some in the 2-channel community are. Even within the 2-channel community, I'm learning that the critical listening experience is dying a slow and painful death. That's not a slam, that's just the way it is. Now, that doesn't mean there aren't HT listeners who don't care about the sound, they do, they're just not as picky about it. The point here is that Klipsch probably wouldn't be making the wisest of business decisions if they built crossovers to appease 1% or less of listeners. Everyone here knows that better parts result in an improvement of the sound. What we disagree on is at what point does it not make a difference, and are some parts really "better" than others.

  18. My sweet and sour pork. Yum! Have you ever thought that good sweet and sour pork is sublime? Have you found yourself disappointed at the fact that finding a restaurant that serves good quality sweet and sour pork is kind of "hit and miss?" Never again! This is made with great pork! Pictured is 1 serving. Ingredients and instructions follow below picture. You need a deep fryer for this. For 1 serving as shown: 1/4 pound Pork tenderloin All-purpose white flour 1 egg 1 small can of pineapple chunks in heavy syrup (you will have a lot left over if making 1 or 2 servings, so store it or throw it out) white vinegar granulated cane sugar ketchup corn starch 2/3 cup white rice 1/2 tablespoon butter salt black pepper green bell pepper onion Directions: 1. Put rice in rice cooker or pan and add appropriate amount of water. In my small rice cooker, I use just under 1 cup of water. Melt butter in the water, and add copious salt and pepper to the water. Stir it all in. Allow rice to cook. My rice cooker shuts off automatically. 2. In a sauce pan (appropriate in size for number of servings you are making), add: 3 tablespoons white vinegar 5 tablespoons pineapple syrup a handful of pineapple chunks 5 tablespoons ketchup 5 or 6 bite-sized chunks of green bell pepper an equal amount of onion chunks/pieces 1 1/4 tablespoons of sugar 3. Put the pan on medium heat. 4. Add about 1/2 tablespoon corn starch to about 1/8 cup tap water. Stir it in thoroughly. 5. Increase heat to bring to boil. As soon as it comes to a boil, re-stir the corn starch/water mix and pour it into the pan. Stir it in. Reduce heat to lowest setting and stir occasionally. Taste it. If it's too tangy or tart, add more sugar. If it is too sweet, and more vinegar or ketchup. Tweak it to your taste. For thicker sauce, you could have added more corn starch to the tap water earlier. Learn as you go and get it the way you like it. 6. Cut pork into bite-sized pieces. Put some flour into a zip lock bag. Put the egg in a bowl and scramble it well. Put the pork pieces in the egg and squish it all around. Take the slimy pieces out, squeeze the excess egg off into the bowl to try to reduce the amount of egg a good bit, and then, put the pork in the zip lock and shake, shake, shake. Remove the floured pork pieces (put them in a bowl or on a plate) and discard the excess flour. 7. In a deep fryer preheated to 375 degrees, add the breaded pork pieces and let cook for 4 - 5 minutes. 8. Transfer cooked pork into sauce pan and mix it all in. Mix it in thoroughly for a nice, gravy-like coating. It's ready to serve. Add rice to plate, and add sweet and sour pork to the side. P.S. Handy tip if you like this recipe: What I do is buy pork tenderloin when it is on sale for about $3.50 a pound. I buy about a 3.5 pound tenderloin, and I bring it home, cut it into 1/4 pound chunks and put the chunks into good quality freezer zip bags. That way, I need only thaw the number of portions I intend to eat for the given meal (usually 1 for me). This way, there is no messing around with storing cooked leftovers I might get to in a few days. When I am in the mood for sweet and sour pork, I put one of the bagged portions into water in the sink to let it thaw for about 45 minutes to an hour before I intend to start cooking.

  19. I've been very happy with the performance of the HK3490 connected to an Acurus A200 (200 x 2) amp but like many of you, I have decided to venture into a dedicated Preamp. After much advice from this thread, I decided that I would give the Rotel RC 1070 Preamp a try to see if there is any sonic benefit over my HK3490 2ch Receiver. The Rotel arrived late this evening so of course....in typical Youthman fashion, I unboxed it, setup my camera and took some photos of the Rotel and am now sharing them with you before ever even firing up the Rotel. Call me crazy but I enjoy photography and the fellowship from this community as much as I enjoy audio. Plus I realize since it's late, I won't be able to do any real A/B testing with my wife and kids asleep. That will take place in the morning. For now....I have a few photos I can share

  23. Spurs from a switch mode power supply can look like that too. You mentioned using a laptop. Were you running off the battery, or was it plugged into the wall? It's not uncommon to get leakage current on the ground from your laptop's power supply. It behaves just like a ground loop except the frequencies are higher. Running off the battery can make this go away....we have this problem all the time at work. Btw, what are you plugging your Dayton microphone into? These spurs could also be coupled into your microphone preamp. If this is an acoustically generated noise, then you should be able to hear it with your own ears...

  24. I recommend taking sweeps at closer to 100 dB or higher (wear ear protection) --perhaps if the noise was from the projector, that will push those 1-10 kHz spikes down on the impulse graph. If it doesn't, then... You might also still move your fronts toward the front wall by about half the distance: if that "slap" delay decreases, then you'll know what the problem is. If if increases the delay, then you can at least rule out the front wall. If it doesn't change the delay, then you've got a nearfield reflector issue next to your listening position. Chris

  27. Absolute Luck!!! I've had that cabinet for about six years. I bought it with a Mitsubishi 73833 TV that I no longer have. I've actually been considering putting it downstairs and running my three Heresy's for the fronts for home theater and my Klipschorns for only 2-channel. That cabinet had a mesh on it that I took out. The Heresy fits perfect!

  34. no fair making fun of dead people. It was probably the “Jackass” that kept us alive. Take the stuff from the bottom of a wine barrel and run through a still -- strongest stuff you’ll ever drink. We called it the Jackass and even the old folks did shots of it. Fun times.

  35. Visio isn't made in America. Their headquarters are in California, but the products are made overseas. A more correct answer would be Element, although they're only assembled in the US. There are a couple of very high end TV manufacturers that actually manufacturer at least most if not all of their TV's here, but you're talking about insane prices. In the future, UDC with its OLED TV's may be a big player. You mean 4K? Who buys a nice TV only for the broadcast capability? I can't remember the last time I watched anything over the air. I think 4K is a waste regardless unless you're 3' from the screen.

  36. That's funny.Helping my elderly Aunt once prepare for the annual Fourth of July BBQ. They would dig a hole in the yard and use white oak. Put big hunks of meat on these metal rods. She would put rock salt on the meat before cooking. She asked me to get the salt one time. I grabbed the bag and said, "is this it?" She said yes. I then said, "this isn't fit for human consumption." She laughed and I told her I was serious and showed her the warning. She shrugged her shoulders and said "I've been using that exact stuff for the past 30 years." we used it that day...we all lived. The way I've lived...and I'm not the worst of the bunch--maybe that explains it.

  39. Our "not so meager" offerings this Easter. Slow cooked brisket, elote, roasted potatoes and carrots with garlic and spring onion, the requisite deviled eggs, and fresh herb salad with beets and tomatoes. Dessert (not pictured) was a light Angel Food Cake with crushed pineapples (baked inside) and whipped cream. Thanks to Mrs. Boxx for making this Easter meal fabulous. We make a great team.

  47. I agree with Schu. There are some important numbers, just not the unqualified THD numbers. Have a look at input sensitivity, does the wattage double when the impedance of the load is halved (approximately). Fortunately, Klipsch speakers usually do not present a difficult load and they usually have tons of efficiency (which also means any hiss or hum will come through). So reviews done with lower efficiency speakers or difficult loads (electrostats etc) are not very useful. Well, certainly Specs make a difference. But they tell you Absolutely Nothing on whether you will like the amp or not.

  48. If you bought your speakers new they will need break in time. Let them play continuously even at low volume for at least a few days straight before you do any critical listening. That being said some recordings do sound worse than others. You can try higher resolution copies (or re-mastered if available) of the same music and see if that helps. With older recordings it really is hit or miss on quality and really sensitive horn speakers will let you know in a hurry which is which, good luck!

  49. hunter buddies of mine spend upwards of $5k a year to get their tag limit. You can spend $3-7k on a 4-wheeler or jet ski. Boats cost $30k. My 20yr old shotgun was $1,400. The Browning 725 I want is around $3,200. Expensive hobbies exist all around us, but only audio systems seem to raise eyebrows with the "responsibility police" Is $8k amortized over the next 20+ years really that big of a deal?
