  1. Morning gang, coffee and pop tarts this morning. Its been busy what can I say, we probably won't be going to the lake this evening as we have too much going on. I need to mow the yard this morning before it gets hot. Speaking of the heat, yesterday it was around 100 with the heat index. Around here this time of the year it gets hot and humid, not like Louisiana, or Mississippi but enough to not make you not want to do anything. To be honest, I don't mind it all that much. Take care guys and gals, I'll stop in again sometime, maybe tomorrow.

  6. That's me, I wouldn't live in the desert, went there once and it was to hot to even swim. Plus they have tarantulas, so never ever, it's the only thing I am scared of. Evening gang....Man....... I loved El Paso when I was there, I liked the dry heat. Lived mostly in Baltimore so that dry heat was a nice change. I could have done with out the wind storms we got there. Man El Paso was one windy place. I also like all the crazy bugs they had there, the scorpions, tarantulas, fire ants, and in the aircraft hanger the were 100's of black widow spiders. There was this one crazy bug I caught there....it's called a wind scorpion.....man that was one bad a$$ bug, never seen anything like it. I would catch these bugs and keep them in a fish tank for a few weeks.... The big black tarantulas could only be kept for a week or two, there hair would start molting and they would not eat....yea I like bugs and things........I tell ya google that wind scorpion thing....it's got some bad a$$ jaws.... MKP :-) See I knew there were spiders and scorpions, no thanks. I don't mind snakes and an occasional alligator but no tarantulas.

  9. Good afternoon everyone....................well, looks like everyone has business to attend to ... dTel, I thought I would kick up the coffee topic a bit with a touch of luxury Hmmmm, what will I think of next............. Anyway, my morning was the breakfast outdoors, THEN, a long and usual Skype session with Pezz from RTM, then dropped everything and headed out on the motorcycle for the performance shop for an inspection sticker!! Normally, May is the month here in MA. when all bike inspections are performed, but, with my busy sched. I had NO time to do this. So, I risked a moving violation (at least my reg. is up to date) and rode to the next town. Passed one town cop in an Explorer, but we would have not seen my plate and that was the only close call... I am good now until Dec. Left the bike out because I may have to make a run to the hardware store OR Homer D. for some hardware and hose for my NEXT project today... YES, I bought an automatic watering system just like the type they have at the nursery for watering all the hanging plants in the green houses.. I want to make this a permanent install, but, removable hose and fixtures to the 7 hanging plants on the deck... Stainless hardware etc. Not sure if the 50' of supplied hose will be enough to go around the deck and up all the 8' high posts... We'll see I guess.. Enjoy your afternoon everyone...............GRILLED shrimp and scallops with organic veggies on skewers for dinner tonight Photos for FF&M a possibility.. ...............Gary PS. The engine/trans swap sounds like a bit of a job.........computer goes with it too I would imagine.... Safe flight Mark...........I LOVED taking up friends for scenic trips around town etc..... I rather that then flying to get from point A to B....

  10. Morning Gang A nice 68 in the Cave, coffee should be done. Fires poping up everywhere, heat will return this next week, 100s again. Mr Crow coming along, details, details. Flying sunday morning, big Ho-Down out in farmland, between myself and one other Pilot we take up all the kid's one at a time. Typical dry summer out west as would be the norm.

  12. Spent at least 10 years in the desert. We had a swamp cooler and it worked fine--most of the houses had them. When i bought my first place, i had refrigerated air; but, it was horribly expensive. I actually love a summer desert evening.

  17. Morning......... I should have left for the shop....but i'm still drinking my coffee, working on 2nd cup. Was up late last night and I got a pounding head ache this morning....I'm working on my daughters new ride this weekend. I'm getting her into our old 98 Odyssey van. It runs and drives good but it uses alot of oil....like a quart every 600 miles.....so I know what would have happen if I didn't fix it.....she would drive it... not check the oil.... run it dry then it blows up. So this weekend I'm dropping in a low mileage Japanese engine/transmission in it. There is a big business getting these low mileage engines and transmissions out of Japan. OK gotta roll out.....I'll check in later... MKP :-)

  19. Very much the goal in the desert. Dry air is not comfortable. If you have gas heat you know what I mean. Static, and even when it's warm it may not feel warm. Once you get west of Fort Worth it's good to have a humidifier in the winter. Makes it feel warmer and keeps your nose and throat from drying out...and prevents sending quarter inch sparks into your tone arm when you touch it. Trust me. Been there, done that. I take it there are a lot more folks who haven't spent time in dry climates than I would have imagined. Evaporative cooling is not only not rocket science, it's what the human body does to survive. The drier the air the better the result. Oddly, we are at 98 in Houston which is basically a swamp. Don't have a hygrometer but I am guessing the humidity is way down under the big Bermuda high. Barometer reads 30.1. In any event, even though it's a couple of hours to sun down, we have a good breeze and it's quite comfortable in the shade. That is rare here. Just checked NOAA for Seabrook and the humidity is 50%. That is dry as hell for Houston. No wonder it feels fine in the shade with a breeze. Dave

  20. As many here have noticed, I am posting again. It wasn't anything other than life getting in the way. I got an email shaming me to return as it was an honest query as to how I was doing. The email was not shaming me, I was, as time and life kind of got away from me. As to how we are doing, well, I don't have the need to sell any gear but if you follow the news, you may have heard that the Boeing corp is ceasing production at the Long Beach facility. I hired into this place in 1978 and there were over 24K people working here around the clock. Now we are down to the last 2 aircraft (C17 military transport, a truly awesome aircraft. The Air Force has 220 of them the oldest is nearing 25 years and the newest is almost 2 years old. Fleet wide there has been over 3 MILLION dependable flight hours with an excellent readiness rate but a very low priority of the Washington powers that be for the last 7 years) and all the commercial aircraft were gone years ago. We now number about 150 all together managers and grunts alike. Most of us are gone in 5 weeks and yes I am in that number. The wife has slid a bit with her medical issues and requires someone to be with or near her pretty much all the time. I did not intend this to be a downer, it is just life and everyone here has had ups and downs, it is just my turn for a down About a year ago I poked my head in here and tried to get tied back in but ... life happens. I was blessed to find on Craigs list, a pair of '79 B mod Khorns in Rosewood within 20 miles of home for the buy it now and cart it home price of $1800 total. Honestly I forgot who it was here that was looking at them but he was kind enough to bow out of looking at them as I did not have a pair and he did. Thanks! The rest of the gear pretty much is the same as it always has been except that I added a Yamaha M50 to the HT to drive the side H2s (a little over kill ??) The Khorns moved my Cornwalls out of the 2ch room and they became the mains in the HT. There is still the Academy doing center duty and it is driven by the AVR but the mains are driven by a Fort'e 3 power amp. I added a 1500w backup power supply/filter to clean up power in the HT. As the plant is closing down, a lot of industrial equipment is hitting the auction block and I won a group lot bid at $156 for a 20 amp Square D Topaz isolation transformer (Used these are at about the $500 mark give or take and about double that for new) as well as half a dozen other things that are of less use to me.. It will be installed into the 2 ch room. Actually 2 ch room is more a multi use space now. I have a 48" 3D flat screen centered in the LP and I rebuilt my PC into a fairly powerful gaming rig. Everything is connected up into the 2 ch stereo and I can honestly say that sitting 6 feet back from the screen and centered between the tube powered Khorns , gaming has a very different feel I am old enough and have enough years to draw full pension from work but it will still be a pretty big hit in the income dept. I am too young for SS so it will be a bit tight for the next 3.5 years until that can happen but I am sure we will work it out. I was blessed to be at this company for so long and to start when I did as my pension package has some excellent medical coverage at a too good to be true (but it is) price each month so the wife's medical needs will be taken care of. Sorry guys (and gals) for being away, this is a great community and I have been away too long.

  28. I would hardly call the HPS versions of the MWM bins as "knockoffs" since they were all built by Gary Gillum, and his company (with PWK approval), former Klipsch Chief Engineer and co-inventor/patent holder of the MWM with PWK. True, I just didn't want to call them mwms as they are not. Good point, since they were not built in Hope. The only reason I know this, is when I got my MWMs (sold my Khorns, dropped them off in Toronto, and drove to Ottawa with trailer to pick up 4 MWMs bins), I called Gary Gillum, who I had met briefly when I toured the factory the day my avatar photo was taken by my wife. In his retirement, he was kind enough to grant me a phone interview and explain to me how they were developed, which is a fascinating story in itself (I still have the recording). When I designed the Quarter Pie, I tried to improve the core section of the MWM with 50 different iterations in Hornresp. Paul originally wanted to stack up the core sections as short horns on stage, for PA systems but it didn't work until they dropped a big piece of plywood on top, then vavoom, it was "let there be BASS." None of my iterations improved the original core section, so I simply made a 1/4 of a Pie shape and stuck in inside, which gave us an "L" shaped horn with only ONE turn. It modeled very well, measured like the model, and sounded really good while saving over 40% of floor space while only sacrificing 5 Hz. at the bottom, which, nowadays, we all use Subwoofers for anyhow. Simpler is better. To get this thread back on track, I coached the OP, who built 3 of my Qpies for his HT. With the big JBL's and EV drivers with Mini DSP's he seems pretty happy. Any slight deviation from new diaphragms can be compensated for with the PEQ settings, so it's hard to miss when you take the full "systems" approach to sound.

  32. The "Barney" CD was my daughter's favorite on my modest living room system when she was tiny. Also, there were "Wheels on the bus" type cassettes. Then came a series of programs about Beatrix Potter and her story books. Theme music for those programs was composed by Colin Towns from Ian Gillan's solo bands, so there was a connection for me. Then son came along, he just liked to listen to what "Daddy" listened to. About the time daughter was eight and son was three, they discoverd a song on an Ian gillan solo album that they thought was perfect for family dancing. So dance we did, and laughed. Now , when we do housework (when children and I are here at the same time), they introduce me to what they haved discovered. Much of it is interesting at the very least. And daughter may even put on a Blackmore's night album. Always let your children share in the listening choices. You'll will be the happier for it. John

  33. I gently, and respectfully disagree. At four years-old, I think she needs to sit on daddy's lap a while longer, while you both listen to the Jamborees and sing "the wheels on the bus go round and round." And don't forget the daddy's all-time favorite hit, "itsy bitsy spider, and don't forget to tickle her during the Big Ending. It's a classic. Make sure your wife takes pictures. A time will come, sooner than you think, that she won't want to be seen with you at the mall. I absolutely agree to the fullest with this! My absolute favorite time with my daughter was when she was 4, she turns 16 tomorrow on Friday. At 4, when I would have to go to work, she would hug me and pull at my clothes as I was leaving and say; "Daddy, you don't go to work, you stay home!" Used to really tug at my heart strings! This is as good as it gets my friend, don't waste this time, cherish it, because it will be gone forever before you know what happened! Roger

  34. Just the horns, no frame or driver, ship for $300 each. I'm using a simple 500Hz xo at the moment to get them up and running. Bob has a passive design he uses on his HF200/K402 set up. He's making me a pair. - steve

  35. It's funny people don't want to pay slightly higher prices for speaker with new XO, and in excellent condition. Yet they will buy a beater and want the new xo and have some cabinet work to do. In the end, they are probably spent more money. GLWS, those Chrous speaker will make someone very happy.

  36. You and Your Brother have my best wishes. He may well need help and support with his addiction. Just letting him know that you are on his side in his recovery may help. I don't know how many times I've wished we were allowed to video patients, just so they could see the condition they were in when they were brought to the hospital. So many have no memory of the shape they were in.

  37. I have been on the wagon for a solid 18 months now (wagon being, for the most part content with both my 2 ch and HT set up and not spending any money on more gear) The last thing I got was a Audio Technica LP120 (entry level TT) to replace my failing Thorens MK126III that needs a new motor. I am starting to itch for some upgrades tho... help me figure out what to work on over the winter. - Marantz 8801 to replace my aging Denon 3808? Always wanted a completely separate processor. 11 channels might be cool and it is half way affordable now, though it would probably lead to more amps / speakers too. - Khorn upgrades. Need new veneer. Any thoughts on Volti Audio upgrades? - Amps - Still thinking about a separate for the living room. Tube or a high end SS? I am this close to pulling the trigger on a decent tube... then I always remember, I listen to too much rock music and back away. - 4 Marty subs to accompany my 4 sealed? This actually sounds like the most fun...

  43. Please do, swamp coolers aren't cool, were just trying to get Billybob to figure them out. Dave has done a patient and fairly thorough back in forth with me on the subject. Thinking he has done all he can to impart his knowledge on the subject. And I do get the jist, for all of my silly response/questions. Reading and comprehension, not my forte'. lol Moving on now...STELLA... Good deal, all I know is it evaporates water passed over moving air to cool, there now you know as much as I do, which isn't much. SMILE IT'S NATIONAL TEQUILA day So have a shot or more

  44. Not sure about that design but with the other design the water just flows down the 6" thick corrugated paper that is designed for this. I guess as the water is evaporating it cools the rest of the water at the same time ? They are used a lot down here in greenhouses, even though we have high humidity they still use the water. I would imagine the extra humidity is good for the plants.
