  1. My new TV was delivered today. It's a Samsung UN65JS8500F. I was going to buy a OLED set but the prices are still a little too high for my liking. While at Best Buy I noticed the sales guy putting this set into the Open Box section. Got a screaming deal on it. The picture absolutely kills old Sony Bravia 70" LED! This TV should hold me over until the OLED prices come down a little. Oh, I finally got my front 3 speakers all set up, now I just need to do a little listning. One thing that is certain, this is by far the best center channel speaker I have ever owned!

We lost our A/C two years ago.... For years it's had a leak and every year I would fill the system and it would get us through the summer... But two years ago the compressor took a dump.... It's a old system and not worth fixing... might look into split systems in the future.... but for now it's window units... Check-in later.... wishing all a great weekend... MKP :-)

  5. Yep Memorial Day with the touristas coming to the beach only to be greeted by tropical storm Bonnie LF bought an 10x14 oriental rug and we went Thursday to pick it up. While she was paying I rolled it up and because there was a low hanging chandelier I lifted the rug a little off balance and there went the hamstring Some better today but far from normal. I guess Jake gets a reprieve from his bath. At LF's new place the roof replacement is complete, LP gas tank installed, electrical boxes installed in the soon to be new kitchen, garage painted and epoxy floor finished, old kitchen cabinets and granite installed in garage. Next for master bath demo Congrats Dave on the weight loss! Have a great weekend and holiday ladies and gents.

  6. Good morning my friends.........just catching up on the Indy news and such here at CC&C.... It will be a quiet weekend outside of tonight, we start our concert season with a performance at the Shriner's headquarters in Springfield, MA. Tomorrow, lawn mowing AGAIN.....but today....hot and humid in the 90ies which will break some weather record for our area... Need some rain, storms could help that out. We had a guest here last night Chuck, in from Oklahoma, former faculty here at UMASS with Chris etc. It was just an overnight and first time we have seen him in over 5 years. After he took US out to dinner, we got back here and enjoyed some short samples in Music Hall before he headed to bed. HA! Got his bed all made up only to find out he prefers the FLOOR !!! So, he pulled up a rug and fresh blanket with pillow and that was that. Then, Chris took him to the airport early this morning for his flight back home... But, he loved Music Hall, since it really wasn't around last time he was here........sound of the Klipschorns are still his favorites ! Ok, more tomorrow..... ....remembering the true meaning of Memorial day as well .. .........Gary

We were sitting there Sunday night and except for 3-4 people talking and the radio was playing low I asked him it's hard to believe there were somewhere between 100-140 people here yesterday. He looked around and just smiled, he was happy everyone had a good time.

  9. All the grandstand seats (150k of them) were removed to help turn the oval into a road course, for Formula 1 and MotoGP (bikes) They spent 90 million for that first F1 race in 2000. There were 225k people, the largest crowd at an F1 race ever, they ran 9 F1 races there. They have 64 suites, but don't count those seats as permanent. The crowds were as low as 125k from around 2005 to 2010, but gradually increasing each year. last year's crowd was around 260k. They have never removed seats just to show less of a crowd. They have eliminated ticket sales for complete stands, then they installed huge multi colored banners over the vacant stands to show some kind of covering. And I've noticed the film crews would intentionally not show all the empty seats. The place is huge. When there's 250k seats, and only 125k people there, the place looks vacant. The Speedway just finished another 90 million dollar renovation to the front outside grandstands. New seats, restrooms, larger handicapped viewing ares, better concessions with waitresses in the high dollar sections, new huge TV screens.

  13. We have taken to buying washers and dryers at auctions. Mostly estate auctions and you would be surprised at how new most are. Front loaders don't clean very well, and as you say, are subject to failure. Especially at our place. With Judy being a dog groomer, she has the washer going constantly cleaning towels. Older, larger top loaders are what we use. We always have one set aside as a spare in case of failure.

I'm on cup #2 at noon which is abnormal, but I did a spin class at the gym this morning which interrupted my normal schedule. Down 20lbs since mid March so the effort and eating tweaks are at least providing some fruit. Awful family medical history, need to take care of my body machine... It's glorious in south central Alaska! I hope you all have a wonderful extended weekend (those of you still working)!

  16. For the half dozen F1 races we attended never once did we sit in our assigned ticket package. Found our way into the into the infield and picked a grass berm where you could view several corners. Other than Top Fuel cars there is, was, nothing more spine tingling than the sound of F1 machines at 19K RPM and you are but 20 or 30 yards away from the track. By far the best viewing in the house, IMO.

  17. So...it was bound to happen. (Sorry for the not so great pic...I'm too lazy to get my camera gear out.) The Heresies were brought down to the family room for a show down against the RF-7II. Fearing that I will put a lot of you to sleep with a long description, I'll get right to the point. The RF-7II won. I had seen that the 7s were voiced closer to the heritage series. After going back and forth, it seems this may be true. At first, it seemed the Heresies were warmer, but it turns out the 7s just have a significant amount more detail. Having said that, I do turn the treble down -2 on the 7s. Their location and interaction with my room require this for my tastes. (Stay tuned on whether this is true with the Outlaw separates that are on their way.) Both speakers are great, but the 7s are more modern. The sound is smoother, more open, detailed, and bigger. The Heresies do have an endearing quality though. They feel softer and are purely relaxing. Neither speaker is going anywhere, but an A/B was required.

  18. Rule number one; go to Hope Rule number two: make sure Carl is going to Hope Rule number three: make sure Carl shakes it 100 times, not 99 and not 101, 100, it's critical, just ask him. Golden rule: make sure it's the first martini that you've ever had and I promise you it will be the best! Seriously, I had never had a martini in my life, vodka yes, martini no, and in my ignorance, I thought they were the same thing, until the master educated me and many others, as I recall. I told Carl that I would try one, and after he was finished, there wasn't much for me to say with the exception of, "I don't really taste anything at all" but to my surprise, after I was then given a taste of the vodka that was used straight up I was pretty amazed that he had taken something, that really didn't taste that great at all on it's own, and made it as clean as a glass of ice cold spring water. Kinda weird and Carl might be a witch or something, but worked for me and one of these clear concoctions seemed to supply quite a buzz to those who participated. Anyone who makes claims that "they" are the best Martini maker, well, all I can say is quit talking and prove it at the next event and until then may I formally introduce, Carl, the Martini King!

  19. Gas money. Good idea rummy. One thing we do not want to do is buy Klipsch speakers for them with MADE IN CHINA on the bottoms. That limits things a lot, and doesn't really leave anything for a receiver etc. If we aren't going to consider used (which we all do anyway) then I vote for cash divided 10 ways equally. If we come up with a grand, that's ten $100 gifts from the forum.

Now awaiting to retrieve my truck from the shop where it is getting a new fan clutch and high pressure port on the a/c line. At low RPM the fan wasn't pulling enough air across the condenser so I had warm air flow and then during troubleshooting the port developed a slight seep. 4 year old Samsung front loader has a bearing going out, they wanted $600-700 to repair so awaiting the new top loader Whirlpool delivery. 29. It will be televised, first time in 66 years. I wasn't around then, but I don't think color TVs were around in 1950. The Speedway sold all of the permanent seat tickets about a month ago, and was selling infield general admission tickets until last week. There are grass seating areas, but with all the family friendly activity areas they've added, there isn't as much area for people to go to. They said they could've sold another 30-50k walk-in tickets, but didn't want to overcrowd the people. I think it's ironic that the Speedway never published how many seats were there, or how many people went to the races. When Nascar showed up, they counted all the seats, they're all about marketing and studies, then it was known that there was 425k permanent seats.

My wife is taking care of everything else, my job is to get all the grill stuff cooked. Sunday I'll be at the race, along with 350k other people It's actually the first time they've ever called it a sellout. Years ago they would just completely fill in the infield. At one time there were 425k permanent seats, and 200k in the infield, so basically the whole city of Indianapolis was at that track. I will recuperate Sunday! I hope everyone has a great weekend.

If you're ever in Austin, you have to make the trip over to Lockhart and try Smitty's brisket. It's even better than their sausage. I just love those pictures of the smokers that Smitty's Market and Kreuz Market use. I was in Austin, TX for a couple of days back in the late 1990's and people were telling me to visit the Iron Works BBQ and Salt Lick BBQ. I'm curious if you have tried the following and have an order of preference? Smitty's Market Kreuz Market Black's BBQ Iron Works Salt Lick .

  33. A pair of these arrived today courtesy of Mr. Crites. Breaking them in right now...these towers have never sounded cleaner. My Emotiva Fusion AVR arrived back yesterday too, and is working flawlessly. Unfortunately, that's where my good luck has stopped... My VivoPC stopped working and won't even power on. I tried to get in touch with Asus for it to be repaired under warranty (as I still have class deadlines to meet over the summer - as early as June 4th) - however, they indicated that due to me installing updated RAM - the warranty is void......stating that the warranty would only be valid if the computer worked. Yup, you read that right. Their warranty only covers the RAM if the computer works after the RAM is installed. Ignoring the fact that their website explicitly stated you can upgrade the RAM on your own without voiding the warranty, and one of their techs said the same thing. Needless to say, I am beyond POed at them and will never be buying one of their products again. I have a $350 paperweight right now that by all definitions should be covered under warranty, and Asus refuses to honor it. Meanwhile, the room is coming back together nicely. I am back to a 2/2.1 configuration for the time being until I can get everything mounted back in place, but it's a 2.1 like this room has never had before.

So much so that I've been told to ask you all about your thoughts on possible future "custom" Heritage speakers. We're talking strictly cosmetics here - finishes and grilles. What finish / grille combo(s) would you love to see and be interested in for the Khorn / Heresy III / Cornwall III / La Scala II? I'll be compiling this thread and handing it over to key decision makers sometime soon. We are just gauging interest for now, so let's hear it! Oh yeah, these of course would be built in Hope just like always. Thanks!

  38. +1 for raising the Heresy up a bit higher. I have the 7 II's and absolutely love them! I use them primarily for my home theater and I doubt I'll ever relieve them of that duty. With that being said the Heresy' had a big improvement for me when I put them on top of my component cabinet, where the top surface is about 28" off the ground. Will doing that beat the 7's? I doubt it, but it will surely make things more interesting.

  43. Maybe we tend to focus on finishes a little too much, I am not too particular. What I would like to see is real wood, laminated (ply) or other. I believe it should be done the old school way, like 70's and 80's Belles, Klipschorns, etc. Particleboard has it's places, maybe offer a line of those also, but tradition is tradition.

  44. How would you quantify it? Do you look at distortion versus SPL? Gain linearity versus SPL? What frequencies, and what amplitudes do you measure? What kinds of distortion? Do you use perceptual weightings on the results? Are there minimum noise/distortion targets too? I would have to defer to the speaker engineers, but I'll throw something out there. Plot THD/IMD across a wide frequency range at multiple SPL levels. Would this cover multiple sources of distortion, including thermal compression? I don't believe that you have to do that. For amplitude compression measurement, see https://www.klippel.de/fileadmin/klippel/Files/Know_How/Application_Notes/AN_12_Amplitude_Compression.pdf The generalized nonlinear distortion measurement procedures by type of distortion: https://www.klippel.de/know-how/measurements/nonlinear-distortion.html The above is incorporated by reference into the international standard for testing loudspeakers: IEC 60268-5 "Sound System Equipment, Part 5: Loudspeakers". The standard test procedures are defined. Chris

  45. That's true. Those makers of puny, direct radiator type speakers don't want you to realize their limitations. Klipsch used to publish compression specs for the old Heritage speakers, and still do for the Cinema line... Indeed it is, at least if realism is the goal. You'll see this disclosed for the Cinema line, as well as similar offerings from the likes of JBL, QSC, Danley Sound Labs, etc, but those are all cases of product intended for big venues, where headroom is a critical consideration. In a home environment, getting to reference levels is much, much easier, even with less sensitive speakers. It's just not a huge concern in the broader market. PWK said something to the effect that 99% of the folks don't care about the quality of reproduced music, and that his speakers are for the more discriminating 1%. Wide dynamic range (no compression) is one ingredient to the recipe.

  46. I'll second (third/fourth??) the idea of making a Jubilee that is cosmetically designed for home decor. The "beauty panel" is likely not enough to get past most WAF criteria but some have been able to pull it off. Something like that image of the original Jubilee that PWK is seen with would work. Something would need to be done with the 402 -- maybe just a "top hat" type of enclosure with grill cloth would do. Another idea, how about a KPT-904 in similar home-use decor? It's small enough to be considered for home use. But beyond all this, there is one thing that really needs to be done more than any cosmetic improvements -- people who have never heard this stuff need to be able to hear them before they buy them. Are there any dealers left that have Klipschorns, Cornwalls, or La Scalas on the showroom floor properly set up and ready to audition? It has been many, many years since I have seen any. I can't remember the last time I saw some in a store -- maybe 20 years ago. The newer generations know sound through earbuds and an iPhone. They have no idea what they are missing. Those that want something better and have interest in Heritage have to rely on word-of-mouth to first find out about them and then make a leap-of-faith when purchasing. That is not easy to do when the prices are in the thousands of dollars. Attending gatherings and audio fests are helpful, but they only reach a minuscule percentage of the population. I have attended the Mid-west Audio Fest, Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, Lone Star Audio Fest and never saw a single Klipsch product at any of them. Something to think about if Klipsch is really interested in increasing sales of this product line.
