  4. Well, they are, the compression driver is way nicer. The way they are crossed over though is very fatiguing to many / several / some people though. However I wouldn't judge jack crap based on a youtube video. But yes if you ran them side by side and played some shattering glass at high volume, you'd notice a big difference. RP-280F just doesn't have that extra sparkle.

  5. Best set up or to a price point? There is nothing wrong with cd's... Is 24 bit better than sacd? It's all about the source material not the file size or the medium.

  6. Good morning vinyl spinnin' friends Enjoying the posts here, I should be eating breakfast and making my lunch, BUT, I just went through the past SIX pages of postings instead. Thanks for the compliment on the DUAL Mike, it was a fun project, and my dad was nervous doing all the angular cutting and being careful NOT to blow out any wood! It was tricky, because of the way it gets fitted to the two PLASTIC halves, and it slides on in place! All worked out in the end. I also noted those posts with the REGA tonearm you put up I will have to get more Rega photos on this section! Full Range, I enjoy all three of Linda's, Nelson Riddle LPs, lucky I was able to find the trio all SEALED on eBay (at different times...) I will have to look into that direct to disk Count Basie recording next... I know we love our vinyl............you know what else is coming back? Reel to reel tape AND the machines that play them !!!! Look out R to R has always been my favorite analog medium... After all, it IS the source of which most all our vinyl comes.... All have a nice day................this is going to be a VERY SPECIAL weekend here in Music Hall.....Can't wait to share more photos.. Enjoy the music.........

My wife is watching cooking shows on TV So I'm listening to music Don't get me wrong as I love eating nice food - but overly stretched out cooking shows are not my cup of tea / coffee I had this album in storage - along with other records that have damaged covers but the vinyl is still great Been a long time, probably over 30 years has passed since I played it last It may be a spin out of left field and not a band many would remember Artist - Nektar Title - Remember The Future 1973 A prog rock style between Yes and Genesis

  10. I man called me yesterday about a pair of Klipsch Heresy's I have for sale. We talk for a while and set up a time for him to come take a look and listen. I live in the country a bit, but I am 3 minutes off the interstate. He has an hour drive to get to my home. This morning he calls me and says he is at my driveway. I tell him to drive on up and I will meet him in the yard. He states he cant come up. I ask why, his response, you have a dirt and gravel driveway. And then he proceeds to inform me, that I should have told him my driveway was dirt & gravel & tells me how I wasted his valuable time ( in a very nasty way). My driveway is a little less than a third of a mile long. I told him to sit tight and I would run some speaker wire to the end of the drive so he could listen to the speakers. He really goes off at that point & informs me , he is going to flag my speakers from craigslist. Has the world gone completely mad or is it just me? Last week a man came over, spent 3 hours listening to every speaker I have for sale. He narrowed it down between two sets. So I politely ask what will it be, he looked at me and said his wife would kick him out of the house if he brought home a set of speakers.

  12. It doesn't surprise me one bit that people who've only experienced music via compressed audio files and crappy earbuds are flocking to vinyl, for reasons that do (and don't) have anything to do with sound quality.

  13. "Dude, lets move I cant see the band" "See the band? Dude I can TASTE THE BAND" -Best line from a sketch on a classic rock station I used to listen to. That being said, if you look at the massive EDM festivals, concerts and raves they have now I would put current drug use pretty close to on par with the 60's. The attitude and politics are much different though. That and MDMA replaced LSD and Adderall replaced cocaine.

  14. It's really very simple. Music is subjective no matter how well or badly mastered. The ultimate reason I favor vinyl over zero and ones is that I have cried many times in wonder, joy, ecstasy and passion delivered by the music on a record, but never once while listening to a cd.

  18. "Best" is a subjective term. For me, hi-res downloads from such sources as HDTracks, LINN, High Definition Tape Transfers, and the now defunct Pono store are the best way to acquire and play new music. HDTracks and LINN have free samples, so try them. You will need a device capable of playing dense hi-res files. While waiting for the arrival of my beloved Pono player, I downloaded free samples from HDTracks and LINN. I was able to use my Android phone to play them. I purchased Brubeck's Time Out from HDTracks, but my phone could not play it. HDTracks explained that, while the phone could play some marginally hi-res files, it could not handle large dense hi-res files like Time Out. I was able to play it on my computer while awaiting the arrival of the Pono player. The salesman was probably trying to sell you a DAC (digital audio converter), as well as a portable player, such as a Fiio, Astell & Kearn, etc. A high quality DAC is essential to getting maximum enjoyment from hi-res files. Similarly, the better the rest of the playback chain, the better you will experience the superiority of hi-res music files, which to me means dynamic range, full frequency range, especially low frequency content, and dead silence between musical notes. While some will argue that the "benefits" of hi-res digital music are imagined, my experience is to the contrary. EVERYONE for whom I have demonstrated a comparison of Michael Jacskson's Billie Jean using only my Pono player and my battery powered chip amp DIY boombox can tell the difference between the MP3 and a hi-res version. More important, everyone prefers the hi-res version. IMO vinyl can sound excellent despite dragging a rock across plastic, not because of it. To me, vinyl remains important as the only source of recordings not otherwise available. When I find a lost treasure on vinyl, I clean it with the incomparable Reg Williamson PVA facial, rip it to a FLAC file, and never play it again. At it's best, new vinyl has surface noise that only gets worse with each trip of the rock across the bumps. The ones and zeroes of hi-res digital recordings preserve all the music with full frequency range and full dynamic range and play it back indefinitely with no degradation. As the quality of streaming improves, I feel the need to acquire music less and less. In other words, I don't always buy music, but when I do it's hi-res digital.

  20. Got home a couple of hours ago after an 11 hour day of driving, loading, unloading of my first pair of La Scalas. Installed CT-120 tweeters and A-55G mids that conveniently arrived this morning. Had lunch with Mallette. I've had RF-5's, Cornwalls, H2's.. I very much like these new speakers and will be settled on them for quite a bit.

  21. Not meaning here to be disrespectful, but that is a very bold statement that I don't think is very accurate. Yes the original RF-7 did have some critics but overall, it was well received then as well as now. Still in pretty high demand today. I would say the RF-7II kept what was great about the RF-7 and improved on what was not as great. Bill

  23. During my 8 years working as an F-22 flight test director I sat about 20' from the aircraft in an UN-insulated, metal trailer house with plexiglass window. Doing burner runs was a "blast". This photo is from the test cell but you get the idea. Watching SR-71s do touch and goes was a thrill as well. Their afterburners left distinct flame holder rings.

  29. I record live music in my home studio at 24-bit/96kHz resolution. For comparison, I used my DAW software to rip a 24/96 file down to 16-bit/44kHz and also down to 320kbps MP3. It took repeated listening to zero-in on the extremely miniscule differences between the master 24/96 file and the 16/44 rip; it took less than 5 seconds to hear the differences between the 24/96 master and the MP3. It takes a little longer to hear the differences between the MP3 and the 16/44 file, but after a minute or so the differences are clear. The only place I can listen to MP3s is in my car.

  30. Reminds me of my Cornwall story.....a guy contacts me about a pair of very nice Cornwall's I had for sale a couple of years ago. He says he would really like to purchase them. He tells me he's a church pastor, and will be visiting his elderly parents about 3 hours away from me, so he can't meet me anywhere.. Sent him a ton of photos, description, etc, etc. He says he is excited to own them. Also asks me to bring speaker wire, amplifier, source. I drive them there and come to find out it's a condo on the second floor. Thankfully I had taken a hand cart as well. Take a look in the condo, and it's all white....white carpet, white furniture....and it''s raining outside now....he asks me not to bring them in until it stops raining. I look at the weather map, and that's not going to happen for 6 to 8 hours. Told him I couldn't do that, as I already have another 3 hour drive home. Well, he asks, would you mind going to the store and getting some plastic to lay down on the floor? About this time, I'm thinking, maybe I should just head to the store and keep on going......but, thankfully, there's a break in the rain. I dash outside, get them on the hand cart one by one and get them upstairs (without help). Put them in position in the living room, wire them up, start some music. And then, his wife walks in.....and she asks of him...."how are you going to hide those wires?" I said, OK, I'll step outside for a bit while you talk. He kept me waiting for almost an hour in my car.....Don't think I need to tell the rest of the story.

  31. For better or worse, most of your advice is not going to happen. The rack I may be able to move another couple of feet over, but that will probably be it. Couch might be able to be moved back a smidge, but no additional rug is forthcoming. My wife enjoys the wood floor(as do I) and wants to be able to see it. And frankly, they sound excellent to my 60 year old ears whether pulled out or further back. We're only talking about a couple of feet give or take, and the rest of my system is not what one would describe as very resolving(nor do I want/need it to be). So what little moving of the CW's I can do without much effort I'm happy to mess with. But pretty much what you see is what I get.

  32. Can't say that I agree with that advice. Cornwalls are meant to be nearer corners and walls, not further away, but not fully "pressed in" either. I would advise your rack in the right of the photo be pulled away further, a thicker rug be placed closer to the speakers and which spans the entire width between the outer edges of each speaker, and the couch or chair on the left of the photo be pulled further away. All, if possible, of course.

  34. I Good Thursday morning. Enjoying a cup of Sam's Club Colombian. Fortunately, the coffee is quite good. I took a chance buying a large bag of whole bean coffee without sampling it first. Drat. Just noticed the screen is cracked on my heritage iPad. Must have loaded too much coal. Still works for now. Luckily I recently won an iPad at a business meeting.

  38. Finally got everything installed, this includes getting the new Atmos Processor. This was a big question I also wondered about, are these speakers overkill? I still need to do more testing but I don't think they are overkill. The argument here is that the surrounds, which includes the height speakers, only play ambient sounds. While this is true that they play ambient sounds, there are also times when they play very lound and low sounds. I shut off all my other speakers in the movie Unbroken, and there were times when planes flew overhead and other moments when the height speakers played very loud and low bass. However, lots of the time they did only play ambient sounds. If I just had some small speakers up there it definitely would not give the full impact and match with the rest of my system during those moments. I also noticed in Game of thrones that they play the intro music through the height speakers and it is very loud with low frequency coming out. We are just in the beginning of what ATMOS can do and so far I do find they use the full range of the height speakers in movies. It is true that they do play a lot of ambient sounds, but you will have those times in the movies when they use the height for full effect. I believe they will keep pushing this with future movies and I am future proofed here. At a local sound store where I bought my processor, I heard their demo system which had a couple of small speakers for height. I can immediately tell they sounded like small bookshelf speakers, more like a car speaker than a full range Klipsch Heresy speaker. I still need to do a lot more testing, I need to find a good movie that plays lots of atmos sounds and then turn off all the other speakers to see how much is coming through them. But so far with doing this with Unbroken, I did find moments in the movie where they played very loud and low, and I knew immediately that there was no way some small bookshelf speakers would play those moments well. The thing is that even decent quality bookshelf speakers are going to run you $300-500, it really only makes sense to use a $1000 dollar speaker up there, it isn't all that much more and you are future proofed for anything that may come out with movies. I would agree putting a La Scala in the ceiling would be overkill, but I think the Heresy iii's are just right for height speakers, nice and compact but offer good sound.

  40. Wow, quite a bit to reply to. Chris, the corner horn imaging guide FAQ is a great read. I am going to experiment a little with the angle of toe in I have the speakers set at. I tried a few different angles some time ago and settled on the current position. I may re- visit the 45 degree angle. Right now the speakers blend behind me, so I will position them so they blend in front of me and see or rather hear what happens. I hope not, they are too heavy to move. They may seem huge from the pics but they do hide in the corners. Again I am happy with the sound, I just want to be sure I'm getting the best possible performance. I originally had some ESS AMT monitors in the room and kg4s, but these work the best so far. The AMTs are a challenge with the dipole design of the top end, and the KG4s needed to be away from the wall which created other issues. That is the long wall, the room is 12L x 11W x 9H. That is the only wall in the room that has corners that extend out in to the room. The "flow" of the room into the house makes sense too. Thank you, it makes me very happy and it sounds great.... Thank you, she still thinks I'm nuts.
