  1. If it happens with 2 different amps and 2 different sets of wires it's in the speaker itself. If you've been really cranking it, you may have damaged a voice coil. I had a similar issue once where I had the wires over the spider touch each other only when played loudly and driver movement was high. I'd say it's time to open it up and have a look around. See if you detect any burned electrical type smells as well.

  3. I man called me yesterday about a pair of Klipsch Heresy's I have for sale. We talk for a while and set up a time for him to come take a look and listen. I live in the country a bit, but I am 3 minutes off the interstate. He has an hour drive to get to my home. This morning he calls me and says he is at my driveway. I tell him to drive on up and I will meet him in the yard. He states he cant come up. I ask why, his response, you have a dirt and gravel driveway. And then he proceeds to inform me, that I should have told him my driveway was dirt & gravel & tells me how I wasted his valuable time ( in a very nasty way). My driveway is a little less than a third of a mile long. I told him to sit tight and I would run some speaker wire to the end of the drive so he could listen to the speakers. He really goes off at that point & informs me , he is going to flag my speakers from craigslist. Has the world gone completely mad or is it just me? Last week a man came over, spent 3 hours listening to every speaker I have for sale. He narrowed it down between two sets. So I politely ask what will it be, he looked at me and said his wife would kick him out of the house if he brought home a set of speakers.

  9. So I know I seemed pretty solidly set on this, but after introducing La Scalas yesterday I just don't know. My onkyo tx-nr1010 allows me the option to set the speakes as "full range" or an incremental crossover range starting at 45Hz and up. When set to full-range, I get the "double bass" option. Testing various settings - this is my favorite. I don't know if it's the unique combination of La Scala's and my folded horn sub and the room or what, but it just goes to show that you should start with the baseline of commonly accepted thought and then tinker to find what suits your setup and pleases your ears most.

  16. Is there any truth to the idea that notes below the human threshold of ~20 hz, or so, may not be heard but may be felt? --in a way that still adds to the experience? I wonder if frequencies above the human spectrum might somehow "augment" the audible range (even though we don't process them in our inner ear)?,.. Maybe that's super silly--or is it? Just curious. All of this is completely amazing, anyway. I still am bewildered to think dragging a sharp rock through a vinyl groove carries all that information.

  19. Well, where can I start............ First off, I am long winded as many of you may remember. My 1968 Klipschorn rebuild/restoration with full detailed photos ring some bells??? [] Anyway. I have had the very fine luck of a rare find. FIVE factory wired Dynaco Mark III amps and a PAS-2 preamp with VERY little use. One day, I knew I would finally get to start these old amps up and see if they even worked. First off, the preamp's pots and selector switch were LOCKED SOLID ! I had to saturate the shafts of these controls with a special lube over the course of a day, but finally all freed up nicely, I didn't want to rush that, since I am sure the knobs would have easily been damaged if too much force was used in twisting them. My music room is once again setup, and the K'Horns are once again made ready for listening to. All solid state chain with an Adcom 545 for power. Ok, I talk with two very good audio/music nuts from Rhode Island who's opinions I trust. We plan a 'music appreciation day' here at my home to make a project of hooking up this old gear to the K'Horns. They are excited, and one of them rounds up a Variac from a friend and instructions on how to 're-start' these amps. Ok, but first, I take the amps from my garage where I have stored them for a while, and bring them to my shop to blow 40+ years of attic dust out of them. I will send ALL PHOTOS of what they looked like when I first found them a year ago. Back to last Saturday.... I have them on my bench, remove the covers, there is nothing but GRAY FLUFF all over them, you can't even see the resistors on the pc card its so thick with this fluffy stuff ! I carefully vacuum them, then run the compressed air and they are now free from the dirt. I discover the DATE on the chasis !! An inked stamp on EACH AMP states 'Nov. 8, 1965 ! The tubes are ALL FACTORY ORIGINAL! The KT-88's have a RED CRAN number hand written on their tops, (and have the beautiful GOLD LION logo - script). A #5 on each tube in one amp and a pair of #3's on the other. The only thing that shows to be a problem is the white power cords. They were crispy and one was partially chewed by a rodent. I taped up the bare sections. The other tubes HAVE the Dynaco logo on each... I washed the covers and took them back home in prep for the guys to arrive and the fun to begin ! Sunday, my friends arrive on time, arms full of CDs and DVDs to test with AND the all important Variac ! We plug in all the AC lines to a 5 duplex power strip (I have 5 of these things, bought at Home Depot). That went into the Variac. The first amp was turned on, then held our breaths while my buddy Bob began to rotate the dial. We watched as the voltage came up. Tubes were lighting up, our test speaker (hand held 6X9" driver) when held up to the ear had the faintest hum...... GREAT.......at 120 vac, all was good so far [] Next amp.........Same thing! Hardly a hum could be heard and now we were ready to hook up the preamp - WITH original bulb in the pilot jewel!!! To our surprise, EVERY component was on, NO crackling, pops or hissing, even SMOKE FREE !! We were elated! Preamp controls were clear and quiet, even the darn SELECTOR SWITCH made only the slightest noise when moved across the detents - normal... Now was the time to connect the K'horns and interconnects to the CD player and start listening. TIME? 12:45 pm. We sampled lots of stuff, live concert, recorded classical and some very potent stuff from TELARC. If you have the 'Great Fantastic Adventure CD', you know what I am talking about. We set the volume on the preamp to 1 o'clock and selected tracks 19-21 ! Oh yeah, the DANGER ZONE ! The wall of dynamic sound was ASTOUNDING !! We just sat there with our mouths dropped in disbelieve over what we had just heard and that it was all coming from amps that have never been restored / altered / updated in any way. How could ALL ORIGINAL TUBE EQUIPMENT over 40 years old still work so perfectly ! You know, if there was ANY powersupply hum or hiss, the K'Horns would SURELY bring all those artifacts out big time, but very little can be heard.. I am very sure the Dynaco gear was hardly used, it was an experiement that was NOT successful in its setting and ended up discarded and sat dorment since the 60ies. Now, you KNOW that the PC card usually has a burn mark around the bottom of the tube socket? Not these, they are absolutely in brand new condition, except for the patina on the nickle plated chasis. HERE then is the discovery. Remember the Adcom 545? We decided to play a certain live female vocal passage from a concert recording, re-connecting the Adcom to the PAS-2 just for the heck of it.... WELL, imagine MY/our surprise when we started that same track. The effect differences were SO apparent and out right UN-listenable, that I just had to point to my beloved Adcom and say "I have had enough of THAT!" and simply hit the stop button on the player. We all laughed and quickly reconnected the Mark III's and continued to sample the mobile library the guys brought. We FINALLY turned the gear off 7 hours later! NO FAILURES. Now, I know what you all have been talking about, for we have learned first hand the beauty of all TUBE amps and preamps made to work with each other, and the K'Horns. My added thought was this... With the exception of the digital source and NOT a turntable or reel to reel at hand to try, we were actually listening to a sound that, if you had the money, could possibly have been heard back in 1965-68 since this is the time ALL these components exsisted ! The bass and stereo image from this sounds SO GOOD even by today's standards. As for the amps.... They will get cleaned up, I already started polishing the chasis and its coming out like a mirror. The AC cords and plugs will be new. I bought some nice interconnects and speaker cables (Monster THX stuff) and will continue working at this project until it is done. For now, I will leave them alone and as they are, and keep the other two in the garage as a backup pair, as I would bet, they also run as nicely. A FIFTH amp from the same 'family' is still waiting to be picked up, but I am not rushing to get it, as it will be in its dirty location - SAFE for sometime to come. You know me to take fine detailed photos of my work, and I am putting together a photograpic 'timeline' for you all. Again, many thanks to Bob Cretes for his suggestions and products put into use for my old K'Horns, and to all of you back some time ago who said to me.........GET TUBE gear hooked up to those K'Horns!". So far, its proved to be a wonderful listening experince that I or my audiophile friends could never have imagined, OR, that I would be involved with such older equipment such as this.! Stand by for the photos, and I welcome your responses as always. With warm regards, Gary

  23. Sorry, serious. I think the bass bin quits acting like a horn at around 100 Hz or so. Combine that with the fact that the side walls buzz around 70 to 60 Hz at louder levels. Thus my recommendation.

  26. "RF-7 = super bright and fatiguing RP-280F = technically a less capable tweeter that is much smaller in terms of surface area, but they are much more comfortable in terms of listening fatigue and sound more laid back." I have had 7s and still have a set of 82ii which are very similar to the 280s. I have friends with 7's and what we all have done is a little treble end work with the EQ and the 7s are sweet. Usually the "bright and fatiguing" sound comes from a poorly damped room with unwanted reflections. Given a properly damped room the 7s are just plain great. I would still be running a set of 7s but for my TSCMs.

  27. There are options, but I'd like to remind you, putting a cheaper receiver on a pair of $1000-$3000 speakers is never the best idea. Here are a few options at $100 more that would be a pretty decent and worthwhile consideration: http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/intdtr504/integra-dtr-50.4-7.2-ch-x-135-watts-thx-networking-a/v-receiver/1.html http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/onktxrz710/onkyo-tx-rz710-7.2-ch-x-110-watts-thx-networking-a/v-receiver/1.html http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/denavrx2300w/denon-avr-x2300w-7.2-ch-x-95-watts-networking-a/v-receiver/1.html These two are in your range, but the others would be better: http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/intdtr404/integra-dtr-40.4-7.2-ch-x-110-watts-thx-networking-a/v-receiver/1.html http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/onktxnr737/onkyo-tx-nr737-7.2-ch-x-110-watts-thx-networking-a/v-receiver/1.html The RF-7's perform best - from what I've heard with beefy amplifications, which will not come from an AVR. You need dedicated separates for that. Emotiva has options for this in the $800 range. However, that being said, they will still sound magical with as little as 1 watt. They are super sensitive, so even 1 watt will give you close to 100 dB of SPL.

  28. Not sure why you would assume not many would have this but this and her others with Nelson Riddle are awesome! I think my favorite might be "What's New?" but I guess I'll just have to listen to all of them again! One thing is for sure... that 2015 remaster, "Just One Look" is a horrible remaster! I will criticize it every chance I get because I don't think they should be let off the hook for saying that it sounds better than ever. Great songs and great voice though!

  34. hi again. width is about 14 feet, that would leave about 6 feet between the KH, which seems very little. from what i've read and exchanged here and there, i will probably face similar issues i encountered with the altec 19, i.e the frustation of playing oversized speakers (for my room volume) at a very small fraction of their potential. i've been down that path and the La Scala happily cured these frustrating years. life is too short to let audio issues bothering the very simple pleasure of music. so i'll pass the satisfaction of "owning" KH this time and enjoy my LS. thanks everybody for support and advice.

  36. It is extremely difficult to compare a speaker from a You Tube video. With that itsaid both speake.rs were very good. This is just me, but I would take the RF 7's over the 280's. I say this because with the SC 99, the brightness can be tamed and the sparkle preserve. The preamp/avr will make things right if it is capable. The RF 7 is a flagship speaker and don't put it with a cheap preamp. If you do, don't ask why.

  37. My mp3's and Flac are equal on this system. The Pioneer is set to upsample X2- X4 the mp3 files are 256 ACC/VBR or 320 which are CD quality or the higher studio quality. I can't detect a difference between CD and studio quality. I agrees with Chirs, a bad recording in HD is still a bad recording. I can say that in a shootout with near 20 people the mp3's were equal to the Flac files on my system. Preamp quality speaks for itself in what it can do. A poor preamp will need more help.

  39. For that size room, a good 200 watt amp is perfect. Rotel, Emotiva all make amps with that type of power. Also, the used market may have some good offering. If budget permits a 15 in. subwoofer will help with the low end. This will leave the RF 7 II's doing the Hi's and midrange. This is one of the ways I run mine. I don't care if the go down to 30 or 40 Hz. A subwoofer has a beefier driver and it's own amp to handle the frequencies down low and will do a better job. The other way I run the RF 7 II's is full range with a Yaqin MC 13s tub amp. It is a 45 watt amp. This thing is almost as loud as my 200 watt Acurus amp on the RF 7II's.
