  1. Same thing I am doing, I keep a pair in the workshop and a pair on the tractor, It's a little late for me also. It takes me about 8+ hours to cut grass, I put a roof on the tractor, this reflects the sound from the engine and finishing mower right where I sit. I wear earbuds for music when I cut grass with a pair like that over the earbuds so I don't have to turn them up to hear music. The pair in the workshop is for woodworking tool noise.

  9. Greetings C,C & Cers! To say life has been busy lately wouldn't be accurate. I read far more often than I post, but anyway - solstice was mentioned and I thought I'd share a pic from Sat night about 11:15pm. Days start getting shorter from Thursday - we're at the time of year that I think that's ok! We stay up Waaaayyy too late in the summer...

  10. They arrived safely strapped to 2 pallets, tops and bottoms shrink wrapped together. The factory cartons/packaging is very substantial. I will get some pics later (probably much later) and post some pics in a separate thread. This moved WAY faster that I could have imagined and I simply am not ready. Huge shout out to Metropolis Lake Outfitters. He is awesome to deal with. My only complaint is that he's too efficient If you order something from him you better be ready to get it!!!

  18. Now Willy you say that as if you feel this relationship will not last Yes sir @MetropolisLakeOutfitters is absolutely the man to talk to if you ever find yourself needing (wanting) new Klipsch speakers. It's really unbelievable how responsive and professional he is. That is a rarity in today's world.

  19. It more than annoys me that I ordered a simple cell phone for my son through Straight Talk with guaranteed over night delivery. OVER NIGHT. GUAR-AN-TEED. You ordered your La Scalas AFTER I did a week ago and you have them already. My son's cell phone is due to be delivered two days from now. Grrr. It speaks volumes of the great job @MetropolisLakeOutfitters did for you.

  21. and most of the vehicles that i’ve owned have been black, even when i lived in the desert -- not a good choice for really hot weather. Today is 95, i imagine it doesn’t get much hotter here; but, i haven’t researched the record. Just checked, back in 1939 it got up to 104 degrees. at least the hot weather here is going to be a piece of cake for me. back in 1933 and again in 1950, the record low was -26. That would be rough.

  24. That's funny, I did the same thing to our daughter. Last couple of times we went out of town I did not drink coffee for days with no effect, thought I would have problems but i had none. So I told the wife get decaf and see what happens, the daughter was here for about 4 days and drinking as much coffee as me. She said she was drinking so much because it was not giving her the caffeine boost she was use to, I said nothing. The next day I finally told her and she was mad, so I told her we would switch back, the next morning she says this is much better, it was the same decaf, no one had gone to the store, I said nothing again. I did get some regular coffee, and showed her the bag and she was happy, but I did mix it with half decaf, she still has no idea.

  27. Way back when this floor covering was just out, maybe 20+ years ago, i helped a guy do his kitchen. This was over a foam sheeting, maybe an 1/8" thick, floating i believe they called it at the time. Never found out how it held up as he sold the house soon after. I told him iv always glued it, he seemed ok with his method, i still wonder how it worked out......

  34. Closing the barn doors after the cows are gone. That describes my efforts to preserve what's left of my hearing. I should have plumbed this knowledge base for opinions, but it was easy to get these from Amazon. For $15, they're better than nothing to protect my hearing from the noise of the router, saws, etc, as I build speakers. As I've said before, listening to 4 Speakerlab SKhorns blasting More Than A Feeling at full SPL during my mobile DJ biz in the 70s with only a pair of Sennheiser HD 424s for protection had a bad effect on my high frequency hearing.

  36. --- Ah yes, the infamous Dr. Frankencoffee caffeine experiments. Results have always been hard to come by as experiments were done in secret and on family members. And now in 2017 the scientific world looks at these new discoveries with eyes glazed over at the amount of data that must be researched. Science is a marvelous and provocative universe -

  37. These early Mac solid state were the best they ever did IMO... Really excellent sounding gear. I had the mono versions, the MC50's for a time, and completely regret getting rid of them. They are a real nice break from HiFi, if that makes sense, and allow you to just melt into the music. Congrats on putting together a beautiful system!

  38. I remember the first one, couldn't go, and there were just a few at PWK's house. I'm pretty sure WMcD, Trey and Tony Reed were there, among others. Hate I missed it. Maybe of general interest: I turned on the TV the other night and a rerun of Shark Tank popped up. The guy was peddling small hearing aid sized hearing protectors. Anyway, first words I hear is Mr. Wonderful saying "I have a pair of massive Klipschorns", etc. I must have missed that the first time around.

  43. A passive radiator and a port serve the same function. Here's a list of pros and cons to compare the two Passive Radiators are a lot more expensive than ports. Passive Radiators can freely adjust their Q, whereas Q is fixed for ports. You can make the Passive Radiator operate over a wider bandwidth, but doing so results in less output than a narrower bandwidth. The only way to maintain a flat tonal balance is to add EQ in the electronic domain - which is a free lunch if it's available. EQ tricks work with ports too, but the bandwidth of the port is fixed by the rest of the design. The point here is flexibility - the PR is more flexible from an alignment perspective. Max SPL of a Passive Radiator is a function of its total displacement. The Passive Radiator needs more than double the excursion of the active driver to bring about any appreciable increase in output at the lower frequencies. Passive radiator distortion is limited by the linearity of its suspension. The distortion of a port is limited by the linearity of the air rushing through the port (which turns out isn't very linear). At low SPL's the distortion from both is very comparable. At higher SPL's, the passive radiator starts to be more linear. As the SPL increases to near the limit of the suspension, the passive radiator has a lot more distortion than the port. In fact, it sounds horrendous when the passive radiator bottoms out - it's almost like a muffled clack sound. The port just continues to chuff more and more (sounds like wind blowing). The clip behavior of a port sounds better than the clip behavior of a passive radiator - this is important when trying to take advantage of EQ tricks. Ports have resonances in them that can sound like whistles if its not controlled. Passive Radiators don't have this problem. At the end of the day, you get more bang for the buck with a port. In my mind, the biggest advantage to a passive radiator would be when the box is too small to fit a properly sized port - in which case, you need EQ in the system to offset the rolloff from the small cabinet. This often requires putting them in a dual opposed configuration so that there momentum is cancelled out - which is necessary to keep the cabinet from walking around. If cost is no concern, then it's possible to design a passive radiator to sound better than a port - just as long as you don't ever run the system into clipping. In the case of the Chorus II - I converted mine from passive radiators to a port and I can say the port sounds a lot better. I think this is due to the lack of linearity and excursion capability in the stock passive radiator suspension. Or maybe my passives wore out after all these years, who knows. The Forte III has a 12" active driver and 15" passive radiator, which is a much better balance than the old Chorus II configuration. Btw, somewhere someone mentioned placement flexibility. Honestly, a rear port and a rear passive radiator are going to have the same placement restrictions. You should be toe'ing in your speakers anyway, which means you're naturally going to have enough space behind the cabinet, even if one corner is almost against the wall. This is more than enough space for either the port or the passive to "breathe".

  45. Asking is different than selling, condition has a lot to do with it and if I miss a 'deal' by $20 more, then I'm as foolish as the seller for not selling for $20 less.

  46. To be fair, you could sell the peripherals and then use that extra money for a beefy AVR or separates. Just saying, there are options....the RF-5's take up less room. They sing too. It all depends on what you want to do. RF-5's are respectable speakers.

  48. My Forte Is are in a 12 x 15 x 8 room and about 12" from the wall: I am using them for computer speakers, which is probably not ideal but there is something to be said for having Edgar Winter sitting in your lap during "Frankenstein." I put in Crites crossovers, installed titanium diaphragms in the tweeter and midrange, and built and installed a low pass filter on the midrange to make up for the titanium's extended range. For about $850 total investment I would put them up against speakers costing 4 or 5 times as much. The only way they are leaving my living room is if I decide to upgrade to Cornwalls or La Scalas -- or I move to a place where KHorns would be feasible. In their current location the Fortes hit 32hz with ease, and have an amazing presence (for lack of a better word) that on good recordings can bring the performers right into your listening space. Congratulations on an excellent purchase that will provide you with much listening enjoyment.
