  1. Good day, I do my best to tell my story as clearly as possible, but I'm Dutch and English ain't my native language. My apologies if I am formulating strange sentences or misusing words. I would like to share my personal story/short review and opinion about the Cornwall 3 vs Cornwall 4 I also hope to initiate a conversation where Cornwall listeners and interested parties share their experience and opinion. I think it's nice to read each other's opinions and experiences, but maybe this can also be informative for others. To my great frustration, I could hardly find any information about the Cornwall 3 vs Cornwall 4. A listening demo at the dealer was possible, but there I listen to a different audio set in a different room with different acoustics. Also, an A/B comparison between the Cornwall 3 and the 4 is not possible. So any information I could find was welcome... And this was very disappointing. A little bit of information about my situation: I am a lover of the Heritage sound. Have also owned a number of Heritage speakers and now own the Cornwall 4. I don't have much experience and knowledge in the audio field and have almost only listened to Klipsch speakers. Read my experience and opinion as a great enthusiast, but nothing more than that. As equipment I have a tube amplifier, the Dynaco ST70 with El34, the NAS 1000s as a preamplifier and the Cambridge Cxn V2 as a streamer (Tidal) Listening room is a living room of 12m x 5.5m where the speakers are placed on the long wall. While impressed with the Chorus 1 I owned at the time, I was looking for more and decided to give the Heritage 4 a shot. After a listening demo at a very good hi-fi shop, I was impressed by the CW4 and Forte4. In this demo I found the Forte4 only the winner. The CW4 sounded bigger, more open, but also quite boomy. Maybe because I was used to the Chorus, which has very little bass. Maybe because of the acoustics or because of the equipment that was used. I don't know, but on this demo, the Forte 4 won me over due to the dominant bass of the CW4. But my interest was triggered in the Heritage 4 line. By pure chance I came into contact with a man who had a nice set of CW3 and wanted to sell it. I was able to buy them for a very reasonable amount and so the Chorus 1 went into the corner of the living room and the CW3 was now set up. Perhaps this speaker was enough of an upgrade for me and a heritage 4 speaker set was not even necessary. It took me a while to get used to the CW3. The basses were much fuller and more present. The CW3 could also sound quite boomy at times. The midrange seemed a bit smaller than with the Chorus 1. But overall I thought it was an upgrade compared to the Chorus. It sounded more like a full range speaker, only the bass was sometimes a bit too fat and I had the idea that the midrange was smaller and less open. (I have never checked with an A/B test whether this is correct) After a period of getting used to, I can only say that I really liked the sound of the CW3. Maybe not perfect, but I could really enjoy the sound that the speakers produced. Still, the CW4 continued to itch. All reviews are so very positive about this speaker. I couldn't find any negative opinion or experience anywhere. So yes.. I remained greedy for more. More of all this fine and good.. So the need to try the CW4 still remained alive. After owning the CW3 for a few weeks, I was offered a nice deal from another hi-fi dealer. There I got a listening demo and I could listen to the CW4 for the second time. This time I brought my own amplifier. Again the CW4 sounded different than expected. The bass was fine now, but I thought the sound was a bit duller than the CW3 I had at home. Again no idea what caused this, acoustics, his tube preamp or his streamer. But if I were to judge purely on my impression of this demo, I wouldn't have bought the CW4. However, because of all the rave reviews I read, and also because I spoke to someone on facebook who had made the upgrade from the CW3 to CW4 and was very positive about it, and because there was also a bit of greed played with it, I took the gamble and i bought them. I had hooked up and positioned the CW4 exactly as I had done with the CW3. 3 meters between the speakers, listening position 3.5 meters from the speakers. Towed the speakers in so they are facing me and removed the grill. The first thing I noticed was a clear sound. The small details were more audible. And the midrange seemed a bit bigger. Until it was really time to go to sleep I listened to music, which amounts to about 10 hours of listening to music. My first findings are therefore based on speakers and my ears that probably still need to break in. I hear some say 200 hours, 50 hours, and others say that breaking in speakers is bullshit. I have no idea who is saying the right thing, time will tell. After two days of listening, these are my first findings: -the CW4 seems to have a larger midrange -the CW4 shows more detail (I'm sure of this) -the sound seems a bit clearer with the CW4 - the bass is significantly less. The CW3 could sometimes sound a bit boomy and there I sometimes wanted to turn the bass back with the tone control. With the CW4 this is the opposite, I have now turned up the bass by +1/+2. - the bass seems a bit tighter from the CW4 and I think I hear a bit more detail. -overall the sound of the CW4 seems a bit more analytical a bit more "audiophile" - the speaker looks really nice. I really like it a lot better than the CW3 -I can't get used to the new grill of the CW4. And that's because of the color. There is a kind of yellowish bronze glow over the grill which I don't like matching with that chic walnut veneer. Plain black or silver/iron look would have been much nicer. Unfortunately.. -the CW3 seems a bit warmer in the sound, a bit more easy to listen to. -the CW3 sometimes seems a bit more airy in the midrange, playing the music with a little more ease. I find this a bit more difficult to describe. But this is something that always struck me with the CW3.. The ease with which some instruments were reproduced. It sounded very light and detailed. The CW4 also does this with a lot of detail and dynamics, but I miss the ease in it.. The airy sound. (maybe because they need some more break in time, who knows) Based on my first impression, is the CW4 the better speaker? I do think that the sound is different/improved on a number of points compared to the CW3. Whether it's the speaker that still needs to break in, or my ears that still have to get used to it, I don't know. But the CW3 definitely contains something in the sound, warmth..a certain ease and emotion which I don't hear in the CW4 yet and which I really liked with the CW3. So far my very first impression after two days of listening to the CW4. I know that things can still change and there is also a good chance that I will come back to my previous findings. My intention is to update this topic later and share my thoughts on the CW4 again. I'd also like to share a bit of text from a conversation I had with someone who thought their CW3 sounded better than the CW4. I find it so striking because for me this was the first and only person I heard talk less positive about the CW4 and even thought the CW3 sounded better and so did his friend. His friend also changed his CW4 for a CW3. Now that I own the CW4 myself and can compare the 3 with the 4, I recognize some comments and I understand better why the CW4 might not be a better speaker for everyone. my personal findings are still the same, my general impression of cornwall III is that it sounds more open and fuller than the cornwall IV, maybe the cornwall IV goes a bit more in detail, but when it comes to live music, the cornwall III gives you the feeling that you are in the middle of it .it just makes me smile... it's something strange...if you've never heard or had cornwall and you hear or buy cornwall IV then you think wow I'm never getting rid of this one! and then you really don't think after that I'm going to cornwall III because the general trend is loudspeakers are getting better and better... but if you've had the cornwall III first, and then you hear or buy cornwall IV, Then it can be positive or perhaps disappointing , because they sound different...and cornwall III sounds better to me. but who am I ... tastes differ, opinions differ, listening and comparing yourself is still the best, chances are you will be disappointed if you go from III to IV! I personally would never trade my III for an IV. meanwhile my friend has exchanged his IV for a III and is very happy!

  4. Not always value for money, and the service is debatable. Most of them all have self checkout, which is actually faster, as you usually don't have to wait in line. Walmart usually moves into a neigborhood/town and undercuts the prices on all the family/locally owned businesses until they disappear. Then the prices go up. They don't have any in the Philippines, either, although a couple other businesses there may operate in a similar fashion.

  10. Not only does Walmart use hostile pricing like that, they’ve been known to try to bypass a town council that doesn’t want them to open a store in their town. They’ve actually stated that they believe that the potential customers in the town need to have a local Walmart, regardless of what the elected officials believe. The citizens know Walmart’s history and support the Council, but that’s irrelevant to Walmart, who have gone to court to be allowed to set up in places where they aren’t even wanted.

  16. Aaron, I have a deal you may be inclined to ponder. If you will come to Plant City in a few weeks, you can take my Quicksilver KT88 monoblocks and Quicksilver line stage preamp. Try these out for a month or so and if they appeal to you, they will be a bit less than your budget. If not, bring them back and try something else. I have had this gear for 20 years and have paired this setup with dozens of speakers from Magnepans to Klipshorns. I am not actively selling but I know you and these no longer get much use. I use vintage McIntosh for the Klipshorns and a Heresy in 3 channel stereo (magical) and use a Powernode with my Zu speakers. I think I am going to settle on these two systems for a while. That leaves a lot of electron manipulators I have managed to accumulate over the years lying around unused.

  17. I am reluctantly offering one pair of my Heresy HIP's for sale. They are in excellent condition and are from 1985 I am offering them locally since shipping them would be extremely cost prohibitive. I will have some photos up this evening as I have to size them down for this forum. I even have the plastic bottom pole mounts for them as well. They had easy duty as my side surround speakers I moved my Front Effects HIP's into there role and will be using something different for my Front Effects. Looking to get $750 for the pair as they are not that common especially in good to very good condition and fully functional. (Photo below for likeness, same style and layout)

  20. Great day! Not that I've wanted to use it much, but found out the ac went out with the early Dec power surge a while back. A few nights were not good, won't leave windows open with 98% humidity. Set the machine to 60 and it will run twice an hour after the initial de-humidify. Let the cooler air in everyday when darksky verified it was lower that about 70%, turned off the dry the wet air machine then. It's set at 78 (that's l o o o w w for me) and cooling down the whole place right now So it wasn't the surge, it was the manufacturer attaching electrical wires to the coolant line, which rubbed over the decade or so and had shorted just for me!

  21. True, they decimated many towns across the USA when they put stores that had been there forever out of business. I recall saying in my HS years that I'd never live further than walking distance from a K-mart. That's my generation. Not being able to go and "fetch" necessary things, I used amazon fresh last year with limited success: fresh veggies - NO, Red Hots by Dietz & Watson - heck yeah! Xochitl or Late July tortilla chips - nope... crumbled from one but from wally.com packaged nicely and sent by reputable shipper = way less for the bottom of the chili or queso bowl more for the cookie sheet of nachos!

  24. Sometimes sales concepts that work very well in one country don’t translate well in another country. Target opened some stores in Canada, to great fanfare, but they closed after only a few months. Half the shelves were bare most of the time (supply and inventory issues), and the prices were nothing special. The nearest one to my place was torn down and replaced with a huge Canadian Tire store. Home Depot is very popular in the US and Canada, but when they opened stores in China, they got no business. It turned out that most people in China who own homes and decide to renovate them just hire people to do the job, rather than doing it themselves. As well, I’d guess that most contractors over there already have sources for the materials they use, and well-established relationships with those sources. Home Depot packed up and left within a year.

  29. @mikebse2a3thx for your advice. And yes, I will certainly try everything to get the sound so optimal. But i will wait until after the break in period and I am used to the sound. Then I can better hear the small differences. But good tips. 👍🏻 I've read a lot about the resonance of the CW3 I never really noticed it to be honest. Maybe because I never play the music at a loud volume, or maybe the resonance was the warmth in the sound that I liked with the CW3.

  33. Sealed systems can be EQ'd very low with good design. Bag End InfraSub 18 goes to 8 Hz, limited by cone excursion. Vented systems have 3dB more output down to box tuning frequency. 30 Hz includes 99% of musical frequencies.

  38. Having a budget absolute ceiling can work against getting the gear that will make you happier in the long run. Out of reach today can become within reach in just a few months. If you’re looking at something that you’d be thrilled to have, but it costs a bit too much, keep saving and postpone your purchase for a few months and then buy it. Sure, used stuff will disappear if it’s priced right, so anything that takes “too” long to sell is either overpriced or too esoteric to have a large number of prospective buyers. Saving still pays off, because that way, you’ll have your cash at the ready when you spot something that’s just right but may disappear soon. And for the esoteric components, being the first possible buyer with cash puts you in a strong bargaining position, possibly making that high price a bit less firm. Having the cash ready is how I got my first Yamaha MX-D1 power amp. I thought it would be out of reach forever, but I kept saving, then I spotted a dealer in New Hampshire who had some at a great price, and in a few days one was heading my way. My dream amp, Class D, super quiet, with 500 Wpc! Try to find one for sale now, lol. Same thing with the La Scala IIs. I thought they’d also be out of reach forever, then one day a pair popped up in the Garage Sale section here in the Forum. They were near Vancouver, and in a couple of days I was on the ferry to the mainland to pick them up, from a fellow Forum member! So first, do your research, which you’re doing, so that’s an important start. Next, and at the same time, put some money away every month, or every week, whichever works best for you, and put it under your mattress, or in a special hi-fi bank account, again whichever works best for you. Next, also at the same time, check every sales site that you can find, keeping in mind that anything sold in Japan will run on 100 volts, while anything sold in Europe will likely run on 220/230 volts. However, half of Japan runs on 50 Hz electricity, and the other half runs on 60 Hz power, so that’s why many Japanese export products run on 50-60 Hz, 100-250 volts. So that’s my method of buying and then upgrading my sound system, and it has worked out pretty well. Keep in mind that you may decide to keep upgrading your system, even if it seems like “just this one last piece and it will be perfect”. That’s especially true if you spend much time here. If you do decide to take the long-term path to owning a really great system, realize that most of of the time, not all the components will be of the same performance level. Maybe your turntable, or amp, or whatever, is the high point of your system, or maybe it’s the weak link. And it can start as one and become the other over time. Don’t worry about it. As you spend time here on the Forum, and on other sites, you’ll learn more, about what works well, what’s good value (not always important), what’s reliable (always important), and so on. More complex concepts will start to seem less so, and your disposable income/available cash can change over time, hopefully for the better, but there are no guarantees in life. In my case, I thought I knew a lot about audio, but that “lot” has multiplied three- or four-fold since I joined the Forum, a month after I bought my first La Scalas. At present, my system has evolved so far from its not bad beginnings that I couldn’t have even imagined having a setup like this in my living room. Over time, my ideas grew and changed, but I kept investing some money every year, and it gradually improved, sometimes surprising me with the changes. Now it’s at a point where the upgrades are more expensive and the gains are smaller, so I’ll leave the hardware as it is and start to see how I can upgrade the room to work better with the stereo. Naturally, that will mean more research, and more saving, and more watching, but it’s part of my way of living at this point. As well, 2021 was the first year since 2006 that I spent nothing on the system. Yes, nothing! I did buy some discs (CDs, DVDs, LPs) in 2021, and I really enjoyed listening, but I kept saving, so the budget looks good, plus room treatments are not all that costly (most of the time), and you don’t have to run power lines to them. Depending on your level of commitment, and budget, of course, you may have your dream system in five years. Or more. Or less. It’s up to you. As long as you can lean back close your eyes, and notice a great big smile has found its way onto your face, or if you and everybody in the room can’t resist getting up and dancing, fast, slow, it doesn’t matter. “The music is the magic, and the music’s in me”, you’ll say.

  45. @Moh You may have been turning down the upper 1/3 or so of the frequency spectrum with the treble control (typically, they have their greatest effect at the top, making their over-use, to cut, result in dull sound), but turning up the 16KHz slider may have restored the much needed "air" and "richness" at the very top, increasing the gentle beauty of the music. The overtones are magic. To qualify as an overtone, a tone needs to be part of the harmonic series above the fundamental frequency of a given note. The highest note on the piano has a fundamental of 4,186 Hz. Even a piccolo or a violin doesn't normally have higher fundamentals. A range called "presence" runs from about 4KHz to 8KHz, and usually sounds great. The highest range is 8KHz to 20KHz, and is often called "brilliance" or "air." IMO, providing that the speakers are fairly well balanced (or made that way with EQ), most ear fatigue, especially with IM distortion, centers on about 2KHz, and ranges between about 800Hz and 3.5KHz. The "BBC dip" that they built into some of their speakers is around 2KHz, and helped make for lovely sounding speakers that (in my experience) did not cause listening fatigue, and were not harsh, despite some horrible recordings they dealt with in the 1950s and 1960s. Audyssey, too, for their Audyssey Reference choice, provided "midrange compensation" which was a subtle cut/dip (a bit more than a 2 dB cut) at 2KHz, or a bit higher. Chris Kyriakakis, their co-founder, and the CTO for years, said he never heard a speaker/room combination that was not improved by it. Many users on the Audyssey forum begged to differ, though, and as soon as there was an app available to remove it, while still retaining Reference's Very High frequency roll-off, they did so. Some of those users have "golden ears" loudspeakers, which cost a great deal of money, and are designed to have veiled response in the usual range of living rooms, so, for them, the dip would be a double dip. Klipsch speakers are not veiled! They are not "laid back." They tend to be "up front." So are many JBLs, Altecs, Electro-Voice, and speakers with midrange and treble horns. To me, with a good recording, and a full orchestra, they tend to sound like the orchestra would from about the 10th row, not the back of the hall. Speaking of recordings, they vary so much that they, and listening rooms, are the variables that make the largest difference in the sound.
