  1. Another night with the new lady friend.....how long can we keep this up (or can I keep it up)? By the way she loves my sound system and wants music with morning coffee. Played a little Ray LaMontagne. She has a very nice, new house with speakers in the ceiling but now that she has heard a good 2 channel system she is hooked. She knows a little about equipment......her late husband had a recording studio at their home. Don't think the critter likes sharing his time with the new lady though he likes her. She is off for a bike ride and tennis and I'm off to the beach with critter. Cheers Gents

  7. Hi fellas, Please accept my sincerest apologies for not replying. Lots of great info here. Over the last couple of months, I've gone back and forth comparing solid-state amps and tube amp pairings with the Cornwalls. My ears have decided and the scales have fallen off my eyes. I'm definitely partial to tube amp pairings. I've decided to stick with the tube amps that I have and just play around with them. I am considering selling my Mcintosh MC275 for a Line Magnetic 219IA integrated amp. Yeah I know its heresy! Line Magnetic tube amps are less expensive here in Singapore compared to the USA. http://www.lm-audio.com/cp_l.aspx?dyiji=10 I do realise I have to consider changing my crossover networks (Type A). Thanks for the headsup Dean. That will probably be my focus for now followed by some room treatment. I simply want to hear my Cornwalls at their best. Again thank you all for sharing your thoughts. There is a wealth of information in this forum.

  8. At some point I'd say it is Klipsch inspired. I tend to still call it Klipsch as long as the cabinet still exists. As long as it still sounds good to me I don't really care what others call it

  11. Not sure what you mean by "space to fill"... In terms of fitting equipment in there, cars are always easier to get lots of subs in compared to an extended cab truck. There's hardly anywhere to put anything in a truck unless you give up your bed, and what's the point of having a truck if you do that? In terms of filling the interior with sound, strangely, larger vehicles are often louder even with the same equipment. Something about the 1/4 wavelength rule and stuff. We used to put SPL microphones under the dash by the floorboard as far away from the subs as possible, which is where it was the loudest. when I had one of my ford extended cabs I used a bazooka sub between the passenger seat and the rear seat. didn't use too much room, and the bass was okey dokey. Had one of those back in the day, sold it within a week. My first experiment was well before subwoofers were mainstream, threw a 15" woofer on the trunk deck along with 4 6x9s on my 73 Delta 88. The sun ate the paper cone within a month.

  12. I don't know about anyone else, I wasn't comparing. for that matter, a chevy extended p/up might sound completely different than a ford or dodge. the only way to find out is to install and listen. if you have someone else do the work, be sure they will let you exchange components til you get the sound you want. I was referring to the comment on the trunk mounted car sub, no to your post. ok....and I agree with your earlier statement....basically better to have to much than not enough. I rarely turn the volume past 5 or 6....it's nice knowing I can though!

  13. I used to own the 1.5QR and I've spent a lot of time in front of the 3a. I did planars for over a decade. I don't get the "here, listen to my system using YouTube, using your phone, PC, laptop, etc." -- it's not like we're going to come any where near what you're hearing over there.

  17. Well to me the cheaper alternatives to JTR would be the seaton submersive. Then after that you gotta step down to only 15" offerings. Hsu, psa, and then Svs. The seaton submersive would be wherey money would go most likely if I were to get out of diy and back into regular sub offerings
    1 point
  18. What you said makes sense. It just hasn't evolved much from that point in terms of mainstream offerings. I mean, today's hardcore home theaters have evolved way beyond the point of having a lightweight sub with a plate amp in the low 3-digit range. Typically it's either DIY or throw money at JTR or similar, usually DIY. I suppose the marketing people know not many will sell, but it would be nice if there was some better solutions that let people take advantage of what is truly possible with home subs without having to spend tons of hours and money experimenting with DIY stuff. It's kinda fun, or at least it was when I was younger, but I'm to the point that I've got enough responsibilities that I think it would be nice to have a turn-key slamming solution without having to mess with the nuts and bolts as much. I don't have as much time and patience to finish my cabs perfectly for example, and I typically always wish I did something differently when I'm done.

  19. You asked why Klipsch didn't make a single 18 that can get down?!? So I told you that they did. Now is it a single sealed sub like a JTR S1 no. Is it much bigger than a JTR S2? No. It's also 1400$ vs 3000$ so you pay for a convienance of a smaller box for sure.

  20. It's just massive for home use, thought that's why you sold yours: https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/150471-behemoth-kpt-884-subwoofer-for-sale/ For a visual: One JTR captivator with a single 18 - 21 x 21 x 16.25 : One kpt-884 with a single 18 - 22.5 x 35.75 x 49.75:

  21. How does the line up of games this weekend look?
    1 point
  22. You're talking about two huge pro audio paper woofers in a massive 156 pound cabinet and likely a low tuning frequency and a 104 db stated efficiency, which is likely accurate and not exaggerated like some others are. Yeah I imagine it does have some slamming midbass. Will you get that same effect by bumping up one or two sizes in the same family of consumer friendly towers while keeping the crossover fairly high? I doubt it. I agree though, bigger is typically always better. I just like to let the fronts go as low as they can handle with music. If there's a big hit from a floor tom, I don't like nearly all that material getting sent to the sub. Getting large towers that would sound great with material like this but choking them off anyway and sending it to the sub is a bit of a waste in my opinion.

  23. Looking at the published specs this looks comparable to the RSW-15 but I wonder if the older sub hits those lower notes cleaner and has lower distortion? One of the things I like about my subs is that they are excellent for music and with the majority of the speakers crossed over at 60 Hz can't tell where the speaker leaves off and the sub picks up...That said, dual subs is the way to go!

  24. Klipsch made some of the most efficient and best-sounding speakers of it's time but that technology is long gone. you never can compare Atlas PD5VH with new driver like BMS and B&C, Radian, ... horns used in Klipsch Heritage speakers were exponential with a very dynamic sound but the honkiness is also a fatiguing factor here. new Tractrix horns are far better in term of accuracy and lower distortion and more controlled dispersion pattern. all these don't decrease the value of which Klipsch has done all these years. Klipschorn and La Scala are still genius designs even with today's standards. take a look at Volti Audio Vittora speaker which is inspired by La Scala. whatever they say, it's bassbin is absolutely a renew of the original LS.

  25. Bigger is better with Klipsch almost all the time. I hear the argument on Avs towers vs bookshelfs. I get the idea that xo at 80 it shouldn't matter and all that. But that's just not the case in my experience. I have owned a lot of different Klipsch and sub or no sub it's go big or go home

  26. I agree with what scrappy said. Get the RB-61's or RF-62's and RC-62 for your front 3. Use the money saved for the new R-115SW subwoofer. The center channel and the sub are by far and away the two most important speakers for home theater. There are other brands to consider like SVS, Rythmik, Reaction Audio and PSA. A good portion of the budget should be dedicated towards the sub. Welcome to the group!

  27. I would really like to see a home version of the KPT-684, or even half that size, one that is more focused on low frequency response and not so much on sheer loudness, closer to the JTR Captivator S1 and S2. The hardcore home theaters are using this type of stuff and running powerful pro amps. It would be cool to see Klipsch embrace this in the consumer world. You're already making the KPT-684 so it seems like it wouldn't be that much of a stretch, it is obviously possible. Currently I myself am running an iNuke 6000 to two 18's, would have been nice to have a Klipsch alterative to such a thing. That amp actually works great for this, having a Klipsch cabinet even if it had no internal amp would be awesome. http://www.klipsch.com/kpt-684/details http://jtrspeakers.com/home-audio/captivator-s2/# http://jtrspeakers.com/home-audio/captivator-s1/ klipsch kpt-884.

  29. let me give my two cents. i have owned every single reference speaker in the 4th gen line up except the 83's. ill tell you right now if you want towers get the rf-62. if you think bookshelves will do on stands get the rb-61 and that will leave you more money for sub or subs. the reason or the 6x size speaker is the horn is larger and will give you a much larger sound. wether playing loud or not that larger sound is something you will want. if you are looking at msrp forget those prices. 62's will cost you 750 or 61's will cost you 400. all you have to do is know where to get them. matching center the rd-62 will also cost you 400. there will not be enough difference in sound to warrant the price increase to the 82 towers from the 62 towers. the price from the 52 to 62 is easily justifiable in my opinion. if you have no budget i would get the towers. if you do then get the bookshelves and spend the extra on a good quality subwoofer. speaking of subs how much bass do you feel you need?

  30. As one who has had a medium amount of experience with modding some of the Heritage models, I really don't think that there's any kind of sliding scale of "quality" or value or worth, based on what those mods might happen to be. Some folks make changes such as updating crossovers, diaphragms, wiring, and I think can legitimately call the results at least "true to the originals".....Others make changes that are not even close to what was intended for that model, and hopefully they enjoy them, and then if selling, will disclose what's been done. Obviously what you think is better or worse is very subjective, but then you would have had to have had a baseline to compare that too....Just for an example, I am currently taking a pair of empty Cornwall I cabinets that I got from a friend, installing a K-76 titanium diaphragm tweeter, Chorus K-61 driver and mid horn, and a huge Kenwood woofer, with appropriate crossovers. I'll be putting in some additional insulation within the cablinet, reinforcing all of the interior joints, and adding some gasket material around the back panel. Is it a Cornwall? No. Will it sound fantastic? i hope so, but don't know yet (it should). What's it worth? Who cares.....

  32. I think the CDT-5800-C II's would be great. Part of my reasoning on this particular one is due to what was said at the round-table discussion at CEDIA like a month ago. They basically said that Atmos should be ran full range, and in terms of ceiling speakers, you better get some bigger full range speakers that can handle some power because "they're going to be pushing a lot of air through them". To me that didn't sound like the typical THX setup of 80hz and above would be the goal. As of this moment these coaxial 8's are the largest ceiling speakers with the best bass response that Klipsch is offering.

  34. I am depressed that fall is here, I have grown to dislike winter. We did just get a Jotul woodplace insert so no more "all show" fires, sucking heat from the house. Was a cool rainy Saturday (49 high) and that thing got the house temp up 10 degrees on 14 logs over 9 hours. This past weekend it was all about vodka tonics or Manhattans. Not too shabby. I will say my log count and time of fire burning time accuracy might have been impaired by vodka. The thermostat however was logged and on the opposite side of the house from the fireplace.

Should be an easy Monday, wife has to work this Columbus day, because the state traded it for "Ceaser Chavez Day"........only in Calif. New Monitor/Tv is working out great, nice to see the games after all these years without a TV in the Cave. Today new antenna(s) to go up, if im online by noon, means i did not go through the roof. Time for that first cup.....

  37. Morning gang: Sunday eh? recovery day, Zip planned. coffee barely making a difference. Lab/Cave monitor project completed, finely an HDTV in the cave and ALL wiring hidden, gone, non existent. On yet another note, i have not been flexing my Volume like i used to before my neighbor complaint,(im sure the locals like that). The guy that complained a month ago, came by the house wile i was gone, left a message he lost my business card. Stopped by his house yesterday, see he has a wife on the porch with him, so i walked up and handed him another card with my phone number on it,(in case of another complaint). This Wacco introduces me to his wife, and in the same breath, being "The Horses Azz" of the neighborhood. this guy is one of those wacked out NamVets, you get that real quick when conversing with him. I just looked at this guy and walked back to my car, holy cow, this is the kind of wacco that is on the edge/drugs for 40+ years. Reminds me of Bruce Durn in the movie "The Burbs".

  40. There was a post here by fini with an attachment for the service manual. Maybe someone can find that post. http://edwardselectronics.net/1952.html Edwards Electronics in Phoenix AZ can repair the amp. E-mail them with questions. They recently had an ad on DaBay, I'll see if I can find that (was for repair w/exchange). http://www.ebay.com/itm/Repair-Service-Klipsch-KSP-400-Send-Us-Your-Non-Working-Amp-We-Will-Repair-It-/281398813073?pt=Speakers_Subwoofers&hash=item4184ad2191&nma=true&si=QTH320kNSd3yh5Q0FPTCYIdKRIk%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 A ground loop hum will be a low hum. When auditioning take a few 'cheater plugs' with you. They sometimes eliminate the hum. A amp hum will be louder, you can hear it from 10-20 feet away. If the amp is bad you shouldn't get sound from the 15" sub. Keith

  41. Well crud. It advised me that I needed a state of the art direct/reflecting system made by bose. Said something about their acousti-mass bass module being just enough to satiate my desire for deep, room filling sound. Should I try to sell my current and unworthy goods or just drop them off at Salvation Army?

  44. The older Bryston stuff was very nice...The new Bryston equipment has to be amazing...I have tested some different krell models in the past year as well...the most recent a low powered multi channel amp although for 2 channel at the moment I would love to try the new bryston no doubt... Anything to come close to your 275 is going to be a bit tough in my opinion although very interesting nonetheless...Please update us on your findings. I do know with your cw's you can put near anything on them and they will sing with such ease...Even 30 watt amps will produce fine music art with the cw efficiency.. I am still stuck messing with tube setups one in particular is comparable with your mc275 in power...otherwise solid state using older adcom mono blocks and even pro crown with a bbe882i off of an adcom pre w/klipsch chorus which are comparable to your cornwalls and sound so spiritual... The best of luck on your choice! Please do update us on your findings/choice, please...cheers to you

  45. I suspect that your Mcintosh MC275 MKIV is about as good as you can get with Cornwalls. It is one of the great tube amps (or just amps, of any kind), and unlike some audiophile tube amps, it puts out enough power to produce 115 dB from each of your Cornwalls in a 3,000 cu ft room (according to Keele). I'd spend the money on other parts of the system, or on room treatments, or on more recordings to play. IMO, Youtube is not a good source for critical listening -- too many quirky, imponderable variables.
