  2. Congrats to Baxter from me and Jake! Painting project done and it looks great. The trim painted with white semi gloss really pops. Hanging pictures, mirrors, and dusting furniture. LF off to play tennis. Coffee done but I'm feeling a third cup. Going to fix a large chuck roast with onions and carrots (hold the potatoes) for dinner. Guitar practice and dieting going slow. Cheers Gents

  5. Mornin all. Where are the rest of my C&C buds? Today's my big chance to show off my handyman skills by replacing our front door handle and latch since the old one crapped out. Should be a 20 minute job after obtaining the new stuff so I estimate I'll be done in 2.5 hours. Forgot to mention that Baxter "graduated" from puppy obedience school this past Saturday. Hard to tell based on his performance at home. Practice, practice .... Still feeling queasy over the mere suggestion of the cabbage soup diet and revolted over the prospect of the Dolly diet!! Try to check back in a while. Cheers.

  6. I went on the cabbage soup diet many years ago. While I lost weight it was awful. I cannot tolerate the smell or sight of cabbage now. This is a particularly bad problem on St. Patrick's Day.

  7. Well, the weather has finally started to moderate, and who knows how long this will last so I'm moving into the garage tomorrow to begin rehabbing some beat up La Scala's I acquired last fall. Rescued from a Masonic Temple or some such place. They are birch that were poorly stained and/or painted, so it's going to be sanding time for a couple of days, then shore up the cabinets the best I can. Have all the horns and drivers, need to rehab the AA crossovers, but have plenty of time for that. Will be enjoying my time outside tomorrow and the next few days. Photos forthcoming.

  12. I also use my RF 7 speakers for 2 ch. Power is not the issue, I had a Yamaha M 80 and several other amps on the RF 7's. To blast music, the meter never went much beyond 20 watts in a large family room open to other areas. Currently, I am also looking to improve clarity and detail. Today I started making acoustic panel and may add some diffusers. I have heard great systems that don't use high powered amps. The source, speaker, DAC, ect will help further tweak out more detail and clarity. This hobby quickly becomes an endless money blackhole, lol.

  14. Monsoon Malibar...sounds yummy. You...losing weight there at the fridge at 2 @m Just remember there is the cabbage soup diet. 10-17 lbs. in 7 days. Some merit as to the claim that, it may be water that you loose. However, if you are at a barrier you cannot penetrate with other diet, psych up and do a week without cheating to see how much you loose. Please take the word"diet" with a bit of caution. Do not on a whole subscribe to that position. Have done this diet a couple of times and lost. See how much you have to loose. ***Keeping it off for a month after is the real test. Dolly Parton diet Mayo Clinic diet Cabbage Soup diet Was going to yammer on for a bit more but, the more soup you eat, the more you tend to loose. Plenty online.

  16. I posted a thread on the "Little Gem" amp concept a while ago, so I won't go into too much detail here. https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/153612-amazing-little-gem-flea-power-sep/ The amp proved to be very successful not only because it sounds so good, but also because its internally adjustable high frequency filter allows its sound to be tailored for particular listening tastes with a large array of speaker and room combinations. This version was built on request from someone who asked for the same ability at the bottom end. It was easy to implement since the design uses frequency selective negative feedback to compensate for the usual rolloff of the output transformers and speakers in the low bass range. The amount of feedback isn't overly critical, so it was an easy matter to replace a fixed resistor with a 25 turn potentiometer which allows the feedback filter cutoff frequency to be moved over a range of approx. 12 Hz while keeping the feedback amount sufficiently high. Although 12 Hz doesn't seem like a lot, it's amazing just how much of an effect on the sound is possible between one end and the other (in this case we're talking about a cutoff frequency of between around 51 Hz and 62 Hz- and remember that the cutoff isn't sharp, but rather a frequency dependent curve if plotted). This version also uses a different tube complement with interesting output tubes (35EH5s). These tubes have a huge power sensitivity and need less than 3 volts of peak drive to attain full output (they were originally designed for use in low cost phonographs employing crystal or ceramic cartridges which could put out a few volts). A low gain driver stage preceeds the output tubes to allow the amp to be used with sources having somewhat low output voltages. The bottom end response of the amp is among the best I've achieved as evidenced by the 320 Hz square wave shown below. Power output, like the original, is around 750 mw at 32 Hz (onset of visible clipping into 8 ohms resistive). Extensive auditioning with my RF-15s, as well as two different CW installations, has confirmed the desired goals and further reaffirms just how little power is needed to achieve clean, loud, listening levels with high efficiency speakers. I'm aware of two other versions of this amp currently under construction (one, with yet another tube complement, is by an esteemed forum member who, I'm sure, will provide an entertaining review; and the other by a fellow who found my original All American Five concept article on a friend's web site). Now it's time to put this to rest and move on to some things which are even more insane (tba in the future!) once I've cleared out a few more prototype amps. Maynard

  17. From the Daily News: "A jury awarded Marvin Gaye's children $7.3 million on Tuesday after determining singers Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams copied their father's music to create Blurred Lines, the biggest hit song of 2013. Marvin Gaye's daughter Nona Gaye wept as the verdict was being read and was hugged by her attorney, Richard Busch. The verdict could tarnish the legacy of Williams, a reliable hit-maker who has won Grammy Awards and appears on NBC's music competition show The Voice. It was previously revealed that the song had made a staggering $16million for Pharrell, Thicke and rapper T.I., though T.I. had previously been cleared of copyright infringement charges. The jury decided that the family should receive $4million in damages, and $3.4 million in profits from the song. " Of course, it was the rich suing the rich, so in one sense same-old-same-o. Doesn't really do a thing for all the artists being ripped off by Spotify ("We pay you 7/10ths of a cent for a song and were proud of it!") and Pandora (we Pander to you, not the artists we are screwing!"), but maybe, just maybe a start of a trend. Back in the 70's and 80's it was the pop music aristocrats like the Stones and the beatles, that started a bit of a movement to see that some of the folks who actually created the genres, and the tunes, and the lyrics, that they appropriated so successfully, got some crumbs from the record industry table. Like most initiatives it was of the moment, once they'd either fronted or backed their black hero from blues or jazz, and the album sales diminished, they moved on to the next thing. We look at the people who have made it big and we say "ah how well we have treated those whose talent so far exceeds our own, glorifying those few, and conveniently forgetting all the other real talents whom they have borrowed so freely from. Sadly that since so many of the people who actually enjoy music would never bother themselves to see any point to this rant, drowning it out in a tidal wave of streamed thievery, I mumble and grumble and go back to spinning my turntable.

  20. I wouldn't think they would even be remotely similar in function but I'm not the most computer literate person here either. The Duet is plug and play with pre-made apps and a remote with display and charging station. The Pi is basically just a PC board, at least that's my impression. Very true, I was just looking for what could be lower cost alternative. I would think that the Pi could be set up to operate similar to what the Duet does, play music.

  21. as for disconnecting leads... not all k-horns or lascala or belles can do that, only the older ones. speakers around the late 80's or early 90's the crossover & mid/tweets all had soldered leads, you cant remove them without desoldering the wires. as for the ohm meter testing, if you have never used an ohm meter, or even if you have, i would not EVER let someone go poking around on my crossovers. & i highly doubt any owner/seller would allow it either, so dont waste your time trying to do that. go buy a meter if you want to get familiar with how to use it & maybe after you buy them you can play around with that. but chances are if you look at the speakers & they say PWK on them, they are original or genuine klipsch drivers. same goes for opening the bass bin door, cant believe it's being suggested you try to do that. there is no way in heck i would allow anyone with a screwdriver, or ohm meter, anywhere near my k-horns! i didnt expect or even think to do that when i bought mine & wouldnt expect anyone to do it if i ever sell them. testing the tweeter is pretty easy, the toilet paper tube idea is good but still hard to hear it when the mid squaker is squaking in your face. easiest way is to use a flat piece of cardboard or other similar thing to simply cover the mid opening, then stick your ear in front of the tweeter, you will easily hear it playing the high notes, unless of course you have a hearing problem. actually your hand should suffice for blocking 90% of the mid sound. aside from that & some of whats mentioned above, just bring some music you are familiar with, or even rely on what the selller has. all you are doing is verifying all drivers work, critical listening will be done in your home. dont be afraid to ask the seller to turn the volume up a bit so you can feel the bass, if there is no popping or "farting" noise from the woofers chances are the speakers as a whole are fine. cosmetic issues are based on whats acceptable to you & usually will reflect the price. & whatever you do, dont let the seller persuade you by saying what "new" k-horns cost... this is a common tactic & has nothing to do with the price of 20-30+ year old speakers. if that comes up, tell him you have a 1986 ford truck you will sell him for $20 grand... because you know, 2015 ford trucks sell for $40 grand!

  22. The tech seems to have a memory loss problem. I don't think I would trust this shop for the additional repairs. Sad to say, this might be the result of this shop not knowing how to proceed.

  23. Baba, they actually took 3 weeks before they worked on the amp as they were waiting to get the repair manual / schematic. I called to speak to the owner today to see if I could bring it by after work. He left around noon so I talked with the tech that "repaired" the amp. I explained to him what was going on and he had no idea what I was talking about in regards to both channels playing the same info and one channel playing nothing. He didn't know what might be causing that to happen. He mentioned that I brought it in because the amp had distortion in two channels and I reminded him that was not the reason I brought it in. I had channels that would sometimes not power up. He took it upon himself to replace the caps because they were out of spec. I told him I still didn't know what that had to do with some channels not powering on intermittently. He didn't have an answer. Honestly, I just don't have much confidence in them working on the Sherbourn. I'm sure he is a knowledgable tech. I just do not think he knows how to work on the Sherbourn.

  25. Thanks for the welcome. Mustang Guy, Take a look at the "Analyse --> Plot Spectrum" graph. Note that the highest displayed value is typically less than 0 dB. The "Gain" setting for the spectrogram sets which value will be displayed as white (highest level) in the spectrogram display. For example, if the highest peak on the "Plot spectrum" graph were -10 dB, setting the gain to 10 dB would mean the peak would be displayed as white on the spectrogram display. If you find that too much of your spectrogram display is white, set the gain value lower. If your peaks never get into the yellow, set the gain higher. Looking again at the "Plot Spectrum" graph, look at the level of the lowest peaks of interest. The Range setting determines whether they are visible. For the example I gave, any signal that is more than 40 dB below the "gain" setting will not be displayed. So for the settings I gave, any signal in the range of -10 to -50 dB will be displayed in the colour range of white through to dark blue. (Personally, I find the black and white display option easier to read than the colour option.) For bass work I found these values gave a good display of bass that is likely to be audible, while excluding low-level rumble etc. You can experiment to find the values that best suit your usual material. (When you change one of the settings, Audacity recalculates the display so you see the effect almost immediately.) You may have seen in the spectrum graphs in previous posts that the levels drop off as the frequency increases. The "Frequency gain" setting increases the gain setting as the frequency increases to make high frequencies more visible. Think of it as a visual "treble boost" comtrol. I haven't found a need to use it for bass analysis. It's all in the manual: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/spectrograms_preferences.html Chris A, I use Audacity occasionally in my day job (telecommunications), but for audio I'm strictly a hobbyist. I use Audacity like a Swiss Army knife or Leatherman tool. There are better dedicated tools for a lot of the things I've used it for, but Audacity is free and always to hand. One thing I did a while back was to generate a ringtone for my daugher. She liked a sound from a cartoon called "Kim Possible" (google "kimmunicator"). The ones I found online were somewhat poor - background noise etc. I recorded one off an episode (using Audacity). I then analysed the frequencies, levels and timings of the tones making up the sound and generated new tones to match. My most common use is to analyse bass in the music I listen to (mostly prog and hard rock from the Beatles era to the present day). There's not a lot of older music with useful content below 40 Hz, which is as low as a 4 string bass guitar goes. Kick drum can often go lower, but the "kick" in the sound comes from the higher frequencies, 60 to 80 Hz or so. Musicians have started using 5 and 6 string basses, going down to 30 Hz, and using drop tunings, so there is some gold to be found in the lowest frequencies these days. Older music production usually used an analogue high-pass filter to cut off studio rumble etc, and the LP cutting process often applied additional filtering. These filters often had gentle enough slopes that some of the low bass remained, and could be boosted per this thread. I find most modern music uses digital filters with very steep cutoff - the level "drops off a cliff" below the cutoff. Trying to boost the bass below cutoff in this case is usually futile.

  26. Klipschorns are more than 100x more efficient than most direct radiator loudspeakers - including the extremely high dollar kind. Trust me - power isn't the answer to the question, "how do I raise the bar on my system's audio detail?" Better, higher efficiency loudspeakers with very low modulation distortion amplifiers (you can think of this as low THD, but it isn't really low THD) are the elements you need to raise that bar. 29. Hey Youth, The original problem was 'intermittent' before you took it to the shop wasn't it? Now it seems the intermittent problem is always showing its ugly head. Perhaps this will allow a real fixing of the problem. But also it seems when they put it back together somehow they fed one input to two outputs and one input to nowhere, their bad for not checking. But they are working with no schematic or shop manual as far as I know. So give them the benefit of the doubt. Be the better man in this. I know it is a PITA running back and forth but in the bigger scheme of things(you know life, family,God,eternity) this is small potatoes. If they won't fix it this time for free(living up to their 90 day warranty) get out with or without your $200 and don't look back.

  30. It seems like you have to hold peoples hands these days to get anything done or you get treated like a McDonalds drive through if you are on the other end. People have zero passion these days for what they do. Most don't enjoy it and they are there to do as little as possible and just pass the 8 hours so they can go home. The so called "Boss" should be embarrassed that his hack tech didnt even check the channels before he sent it out. He was to repair all channels right? If things get ugly, just show them this thread and Im sure many here will spread the love throughout the net.

  39. I'm currently using an AVR1700, 5.1 but only in stereo mode. The speakers are positioned in the corner, they will move closer to the wall soon, but so far I've tested them about 3 feet off the wall. The bass is okay, its not insufficient, actually I'd say the mids being a little washed out is the bigger problem. This new line of "green" H/K receivers -- I wonder if its not as warm as the older/higher end H/K receivers? The bass is ok, but the highs seem to be much more noticeable than the mids. Especially on something like electronica/trance. Whereas more acoustic/jazz/laid back music sounds quite good. After looking up the receiver on HK's website I downloaded the owner's manual... It appears to have good, solid 2-channel power specs (95 wpc, 20Hz-20KHz @ 8 ohms). After reading through most of the manual, I'd verify the following... In the AVR setup, make sure the left/right speakers are set to "Large" and that the "subwoofer" setting is turned "off". This will make sure a full range signal is getting sent to the speakers. Also make sure the speaker distances (to your listening position) are correct. Make sure the "night mode" is turned off. If your speakers are in the corner, but away from the back wall. Try moving them closer to the back wall, so they are only 6"-12" away. Having them 3 feet away from the wall will definitely reduce the in-room bass response. The receiver does have tone controls and you can apparently access them from the remote. So once you get the speakers closer to the back wall, if they still sound bass shy, you can add some bass via the tone control. I'd bet though, that most of your issues are related to speaker placement. So moving them around, closer to the back wall (for increased bass) and maybe away from the corner/side wall, to help tame some of the early high-frequency reflections... Will give you the best results. The AVR itself, based on its 2-channel power specs, looks to be more than capable. And if you eventually add a subwoofer, it would help even more. Hope you get it sorted out...

  40. Hello Klipsch. I wanted to take a moment to say Happy Birthday to our founder Paul Wilber Klipsch. Today would have been his 111th birthday. I knew Paul and Valerie a number of years before I started working for the company. I only had a few conversations with him about audio. Most of our talks were about life. We talked about love and loss, the past and the future and the usual planes, trains and automobiles. Paul always struck me as a man that loved to learn. I could be about stuff or people or how the world worked, but he was always looking for new things and how to make the old things better. I have seen him make changes to a math equation 40 years old while in his 90’s. He had such an amazing mind. I miss his stories. …I can just see him talking to Gabriel about changes his horn. So, if you have a bottle of Scotch around, raise a glass to PWK. I know I will. Trey Cannon – Systems Engineer

I was lectured for joking outside of the “lounge.” There were other comments that i won’t mention publicly; but, i told you about them in a PM shortly after Boxx’s passing. I purposely stay away for a while at times. I just returned on Saturday, after a two week hiatus -- done that a few times. Went two months once. Reminds me of when i go back to my old neighborhood and now the houses are trashed and have bullet holes in them. I remember the way it was; but, can’t ignore the way it is now.
