  1. Mornin' kids. On my third cup of the morning, with only a few honey-do's on the list for the day. I'll be spending the day with the phone at my side waiting for a call for particulars on an audition for a local original's band. We're under a flash flood warning.....................................................again. You all need to send some of that rain our way... We just received our water conservation memo in the mail this week, detailing the "cant's" of usage.

  3. How many are made? I was in contact with the factory in January. I was told 10-15 pairs of Klipschorns a month, and about double for the La Scalas. Heresy's and Cornwalls are in constant production every single day.

  4. Happy belated morning. Our 'spring' weather is snow in the mountains and chilly rain supposed to start in Denver metro. Still waiting to see if the Water Gods will order restrictions this year, even though they should be running out of excuses to do so. Heading out for a 6 year old's birthday party. Should be fun if the weather cooperates for a couple more hours. Have a great weekend, all.

  5. Good thing you didn't get electrocuted . Please be careful, remember allways keep the cord behind you. Thats a good idea, battery powered has come along way. I received 2 phone calls from Scotts saying they were going to come out in the next 2 business days. I have not seen them yet . I am now listening to Spotify on my headphones. The more I do this the more I enjoy it, the wife doens't as she thinks I am using headphones to tune her out . I give her the option of me either using headphones, or her turning off the tv so I can use the radio. She is fine with the headphones. As up to last night I have been having to use my cell phone as my computer's audio/video was choppy for some reason. I believe it is a bug of some sort, especially since I updated malwarebytes remover things have been working fine. Now I am using the computer, and buiding some great play list on Spotify. If this computer continues to work like this, I may opt for on of those Schiit Fulla's. I have the Schiit Modi downstairs and I like what they do for the price. Here is a link on the headphone amp/dac combo. http://schiit.com/products

  7. Done that a couple times myself, feel really stupid every time. Had a gas model until it died, went with elec because only using it in the spring it was not easy to keep it running well. Draining the gas and storing it in doors makes no difference, I guess they need to run somewhat regularly ? A neighbor asked me if I want his old little chainsaw which was on a fiberglass extendable pole for trimming branches and worked when it felt like it. I took off the little chainsaw because I have one already and bolted the hedge trimmer on it. It works great for trimming the Crepe Myrtles in the winter, a little tough to hold when extended but allows me to trim the whole tree top.

  8. Dude, what? Let's keep this in context of the story - the tooth fairy. I have a 3yr old and an 8 month old. It would be annoying if someone robbed my kids from this piece of their imagination, but it's not something that requires vindication and internet activism. I'd personally remind the teacher of their place in my child's life and leave it at that.

  10. Recently, a highly regarded 4th grade teacher with around 40 years experience told her class that the tooth fairy isn't real and that it is actually the parents/grandparents who leave the money under the pillow. Well, a girl went home and told this to her mother who was outraged because she has always told her kids that the tooth fairy is real. The mother then went on social media sites and bashed the teacher for destroying her child's belief system, contacted the school administration to demand an apology, and went to the newspapers with her story. I'm confident that a law suit will follow (NJ has so many frivolous law suits that it's a joke, except for those who have to pay since juries here award damages as if they are candy). What is wrong with these people? Of course, these same parents are usually the ones who, on a gorgeous sunny 75 degree day, drive their kids the 100 feet to the bus stop so their precious little ones don't have to be exposed to the elements or interact with other kids. Sorry for the rant. I'll leave now............ Maynard

  11. One of my bankers was invited to the local high school to participate in a day project. It was designed to give each child a budget sheet.... they would fill it out as they did a round robin setup in the gym. Each station would be one facet of life and the kids would fill out their budget sheet to see how much free cash they'd have at the end of the sheet (month). I guess it was to open their eyes that there is more to life than their Ipad and Starbucks. My banker was going to discuss 401K's so she invited me to go along. I later found out, we were exposed to the entire senior class and perhaps the junior class as well. What I found interesting (scary) was when the kids got to our table, they didn't know what to do. They were issued a budget, assigned a "job" with an annual income. They were also issued a calculator so they could do any math. When they got to us, (our table was 2nd in order so many had not calculated their monthly income by dividing their annual number by 12) We talked about 401K's. I had created a spreadsheet based on historical numbers so that I could simply input their annual contribution and it would calculate out to age 65. Side note.... did you know that if you are 18 years old and contribute no more than $100/month, based on some historical numbers, when you are age 65, you will have 1.5 million? What was amazing is, the student might have had a monthly income of say, $3,500. I'd dare say that 99% of them were stumped when I said we were going to use 10% contribution (of their monthly income) for simplicity.... I got empty stare after empty stare... "uh... how much is that? Not only was the mental concept of simply moving a decimal point over.... many (many many) of them actually had to be told to "take .10 times the amount of your monthly income" My banker has her masters in teaching and quit teaching to get back into banking. She had some of these students in Junior High. I told her I was speechless at their lack of math abilities. She quickly informed me that this school was one of the best schools around....that many of these kids will go on to be doctors, scientists and engineers. She went on to say that they have simply been coddled in a culture of using their calculator and didn't have the confidence to "know" instinctively that 10% of $3,500 is $350 without using their calculator. All the while, she was showing me why she was frustrated with teaching. During a break, someone came to her and basically told her that she (me) needed to quicken the pace as we were slowing down the process. I was trying to talk to each child.... take their annual contribution to their mock 401K and show them how it might grow at age 65. I had quite a few eyes get as big as dinner plates as their light bulbs seemed to go off. After the "hurry up" admonishment, we spoke to them as a group....and what I noticed is most of them were simply looking for the answer to what goes on that line so they could move on to the next table. They didn't have an eye opening experience. That frustrated me so rather than talking to each child about their respective contributions and what it would grow to at age 65, I simply spoke to the group before us and used the $100/month story equaling $1.5 million at age 65....but if their sheet showed them making $200 or $300 month contributions, they could have 2x or 3x the results. I had never done anything like this before, so my goal was to try to reach their light bulb regarding saving hard and saving early. The kids on the other hand, were more conditioned to simply go through the process so they could get a number for their form and move on to the next. My banker said that was why she quit teaching......she said she felt she wasn't allowed to teach but rather, she was forced to simply process them through to the next station.

  17. DJK has recently commented that the LaScala doghouse is physically larger than it needs to be so why not use thicker material to stiffen the doghouse walls? If you have the physical space rather than build a LaScala build a Bells? If you have the room for a Belle why not rather build a Peavey FH1(see yellow image below)? The FH1 provides the same depth as a LaScala as well as a little additional width over a Bells so you get a larger mouth and a longer horn for a lower cut off and none of the wasted horn path as in the LaScala immediately after the first major 90 degree bend. This will result is some improvement in performance. There are other modern designs available as seen in this Caire design (bt01.pdf see below) though it is starting to get large for most domestic situations but has very good extension and could make for a very nice two way design with a K402 up on top. Caire have several other similar designs. Hope this is of interest. Best regards Moray James. bt01.pdf

  25. You could use the Radio Shack SLM (33-2055), no problem, if it has a mono RCA jack output. If it has a stereo jack (apparently a "non-real version" of the RS meter), then I'd recommend the microphone that Ellis posted. The RS meter will do as well as a calibration microphone--as good as an ECM8000 or a UMIK-1 calibration microphone--in terms of accuracy of SPL measurements: calibration threads on AVSForum. You will need some sort of sound card in a desktop-based computer, or an external sound card in a laptop computer in order to convert the RS meter's analog output to digital. Here is a thread describing that device and the cabling/connectors: http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/spl-meters-mics-calibration-sound-cards/10001-rew-cabling-connection-basics.html The Audyssey microphone will also work, but it will require a mini-mono headphone/microphone adapter to connect to an external sound card, like the RS meter. The only disadvantage that I see in the Audyssey microphone is that I didn't see a calibration file online -- apparently the guys doing the microphone measurements at AVSForum used the calibration file for a typical ECM8000 microphone. If you decide to be a big spender and go for the UMIK-1 microphone ($75), you can avoid the extra sound card and special connector(s) or mixer, and just plug in the cable to the microphone to one of your USB ports. This is the simplest setup, and it will get you very good accuracy. The HDMI connection from your computer to your preamp will provide a drive signal to power your sweeps. The advantage of HDMI is that you will have extremely linear/flat response (relative to an analog sound card) if you set your preamp/processor to "Pure Audio" mode (or equivalent mode) for your particular preamp. The recorded SPL will come from the microphone to either your sound card or a USB port. You will also need something to hold your microphone or SPL meter in one position - like a microphone stand or a camera tripod with the right kind of screw mount to connect to your RS SPL meter. I assume that you are going to be using REW for more than just subwoofer and bass bin calibration/EQing, right? Such as EQing your loudspeakers from 20-20,000 Hz? Chris

  26. I have made similar posts myself, and have seen Alex and Chad discuss, in as diplomatic a way as possible, that Heritage is not the direction where the company is headed. I think it is.pretty clear from other threads, about CES, etc., there are a nimber of reasons for this, here are a few that have been discussed previously and posted in other threads. 1. Hope doesn't continue to exist because of Heritage. Hope continues to exist because of Cinema. 2. Heritage has very little, if any, IP protection left. You can spend money on products that are patented or you can spend money trying to increase demand for a product that anyone can copy. It they did increase marketing dollars and somehow tripled their Heritage sales you would get another Shineal popping up to compete for that increased demand. A company that wants to survive moves forward, adjusting to the market. Those that that don't become extinct, Poloriod, Ampex, RCA, etc. 3. As a result, even if Klipsch could get into Starbucks, they would instal Pro, like KIs, not heritage, just like they did at Hardrock. Right now they are all out at CinemaCon, selling cinema speakers worldwide, and they will continue to be in one out of two newly opened theaters. 4. The "market" isn't in high end speakers. The total annual market for "high end audio" is 200 million. As a comparison, headphones are 2 Billion. If Klipsch could get just 10% of of that market they would more than double their annual sales for the entire company. 5. Heritage in a niche, and hopefully it will continue to be for a very, very long time. But it will sit as a niche, a very select product for a very, very select market. It gets the marketing attention and dollars as appropriate to the contribution to the bottom line, which is minimal. 6. The vast majority of people on here don't buy new Heritage, they purchase used. There is no shortage of used Heritage, and that fact isn't lost on Klipsch. They understand that whatever marketing efforts are undertaken for Heritage do not equate to a direct impact on new Heritage, it spills over onto the used market. 7. They did bring the whole Heritage line to CES, maybe that is why they are making all of those H3s? Did anyone ask how many they were building a day, a week, a month, a year? Travis

  27. This is the one I use... http://www.minidsp.com/products/acoustic-measurement/umik-1 It is only $75... REW: miniDSP worked along with John Mulcahy to develop even greater compatibility for the UMIK-1 inside REW! With the latest beta release of REW (v5.01 and up), the UMIK-1 is automatically recognized by the software and prompted for use when REW is started with the microphone plugged in.

  30. Notion I: Setting good front speakers to LARGE, with the sub(s) overlapping, and the AVR sub setting at LFE + Main will cause bloated or boomy sound. Maybe, maybe not. In my case, in my room, the answer is "not." I do set my center (a Belle Klipsch) to SMALL, with a crossover of 40 Hz, though, to keep the damn voices (dialog) out of the damn sub. Notion 2: Setting good front speakers to LARGE, with the sub(s) overlapping, and the AVR sub setting at LFE + Main will cause phase problems. Maybe, maybe not. In my case, the answer is "not." Notion 3. Setting good front speakers to LARGE, with the sub(s) overlapping, and the AVR sub setting at LFE + Main will cause LFE to get into the main speakers, causing damage. Probably not, from everything I've read. Some AVRs might conceivably let LFE into the mains, and some might mix the LFE into the mains if the Sub setting is OFF ... so don't set the AVR sub setting to OFF. For all of the AVRs & pre/pros I know or have read about, with the sub set to ON, true LFE goes out through the AVRs subwoofer output only, thus doesn't get into the mains. The LFE + Main setting is a subwoofer setting, not a mains setting. On the other hand, bass management bass, with some speakers set to LARGE, will let the low frequencies that are not part of LFE into the speakers set to LARGE. so some low organ notes, and the like, might distort or damage your speakers, if played very loudly. It is true that frequency modulation distortion may be worse with a speaker cone pumping back and forth over a large distance, so, if that is audible from the front speakers, it may be better to set them on "small." Then the sub will pump a little more, but the crossover prevents some FM distortion above it, since the tones being played by the mains will not be riding back and forth on the cone playing the tones below the crossover ... at least, so I understand. It all depends on what you can hear, and whether or not it is objectionable. But, as other people have said in their posts, I could be wrong. So, read the manual carefully ... even though many AVR manuals are not very good.

  31. Thanks to Carl for posting the somewhat diluted (as compared with what's circulating in the community) article, and to Roger for the passionate and heartfelt rebuttal. The main point here is that this is such a minor instance in the context of what goes on in public, and many private, schools that it should never have gotten beyond the parents and school principal. I know many folks who have kids in 4th grade and, for the most part, these kids are so mentally sharp that such beliefs are long gone from their minds by age 9 or 10. The mother referenced is probably upset because she has been exposed to her child as a liar and can't deal with it. So, instead of being honest and explaining the situation, she is taking revenge on the teacher and school system instead. Some examples from my own daughter's experiences- when she was 4 we enrolled her in a Christian pre-school. One day she came home and said that Rev. Charles said ......... about Jesus and God and wanted to know why we didn't tell her that. Now, we could have rushed over to the school and made a whole ruckus about it, demanded an apology, went to the local paper with our story, etc. but what would the point have been? We explained our point of view and told her that she needs to think about it and decide what she wants to believe. Problem solved! On the first day of kindergarten she came home and, when asked how she liked going on the bus, told us that some of the "big kids" kept using the word "s...." and "f...." and wanted to know what that means. We told her in terms that she could understand what that was all about. Again, we could have gone to the school and complained that our daughter needs to be protected from such things and that we would sue (as modern parents often do) if they didn't provide her with transportation in which that would not happen. One last example is from when she was in 5th grade (only one grade past the cited tooth fairy kid). She came home from school one day and told us that a girl she knew was in the back of the bus doing something to one of the boys which I can't describe here for obvious reasons. My wife called a friend, whose daughter was a friend of our daughter, to talk about this and was told that her daughter said this had been going on for a while. Again, did we or anyone else go to the school and demand action? NO! We explained things to our daughter in the context of our own moral beliefs and that was the end of it. A few months later we asked if such things were still going on and she said that lots of girls were doing that! When asked what she thought of it she said "gross" and "I don't sit back there any more." Problem solved! So, my point here is that it's one thing to go public with major issues. But to do it over something like the tooth fairy is beyond ludicrous. This article and the comments which follow presents some interesting views on the subject: http://www.ahaparenting.com/ask-the-doctor-1/appropiate-age-to-talk-about-tooth-fairy-tale-and-other-myths And one last point to consider- many of these parents who make such a big deal over nothing don't think twice about allowing their kids to watch all of the sexually explicit music videos out there. Then they wonder why their kid is pregnant, or has a std, at age 12. My wife just added that the attire of young girls in even 1st or 2nd grade is sometimes so totally inappropriate that they should not be allowed in school. We don't see anyone making a fuss over that either.......... Maynard

She enjoys music but has no 'system' and does not desire to obtain any new source product and was sadly satisfied with poor quality sound reproduction......... until she heard my corner horns. Now these will work perfect for her........ plug - link and play. She gets her techy toys and a grand improvement in her listening enjoyment. They are a simple but sophisticated solution that will deliver (I assume).

  49. You guys want specs? I've got specs. The goal was indeed a product that bridges retro with modern. I can't tell you everything about them since what you see here are prototypes, but at a minimum for the towers: 27Hz - 22kHz +/- 2dB while the monitor is 40Hz-22kHz +/-2dB. Tweeters are 1" LTS titanium, midranges are 3" aluminum slot-loaded drivers, and the woofers are 5.25" of a design to let such a small driver dig into the 20s with authority. Rest assured, we do not believe in cheap amplification. Horn loaded speakers don't take kindly to low quality amps. As far as the wireless bit goes, until a handheld battery comes out that can provide the 1800W that a standard 120V plug can, wireless speakers are going to have power cords. You do want power, right? Something people need to understand about the transmission is that WiSA products are not wireless like your cell phone's Bluetooth ear piece. They work in a completely different bandwidth. There is near zero insertion loss (your input signal goes from the source, to the driver with nothing added). The DACs used for such products must be quite good in order to resolve the amount of detail that's in the source signal. As an added bonus, you get 24b/96kHz compatibility. Think about this: we wouldn't use products or formats that don't let our acoustics shine to their highest potential. Rest assured that these retro/modern concepts follow that ideal. -Dave W
