  2. Please do, swamp coolers aren't cool, were just trying to get Billybob to figure them out. Dave has done a patient and fairly thorough back in forth with me on the subject. Thinking he has done all he can to impart his knowledge on the subject. And I do get the jist, for all of my silly response/questions. Reading and comprehension, not my forte'. lol Moving on now...STELLA... Good deal, all I know is it evaporates water passed over moving air to cool, there now you know as much as I do, which isn't much. SMILE IT'S NATIONAL TEQUILA day So have a shot or more

  3. As many here have noticed, I am posting again. It wasn't anything other than life getting in the way. I got an email shaming me to return as it was an honest query as to how I was doing. The email was not shaming me, I was, as time and life kind of got away from me. As to how we are doing, well, I don't have the need to sell any gear but if you follow the news, you may have heard that the Boeing corp is ceasing production at the Long Beach facility. I hired into this place in 1978 and there were over 24K people working here around the clock. Now we are down to the last 2 aircraft (C17 military transport, a truly awesome aircraft. The Air Force has 220 of them the oldest is nearing 25 years and the newest is almost 2 years old. Fleet wide there has been over 3 MILLION dependable flight hours with an excellent readiness rate but a very low priority of the Washington powers that be for the last 7 years) and all the commercial aircraft were gone years ago. We now number about 150 all together managers and grunts alike. Most of us are gone in 5 weeks and yes I am in that number. The wife has slid a bit with her medical issues and requires someone to be with or near her pretty much all the time. I did not intend this to be a downer, it is just life and everyone here has had ups and downs, it is just my turn for a down About a year ago I poked my head in here and tried to get tied back in but ... life happens. I was blessed to find on Craigs list, a pair of '79 B mod Khorns in Rosewood within 20 miles of home for the buy it now and cart it home price of $1800 total. Honestly I forgot who it was here that was looking at them but he was kind enough to bow out of looking at them as I did not have a pair and he did. Thanks! The rest of the gear pretty much is the same as it always has been except that I added a Yamaha M50 to the HT to drive the side H2s (a little over kill ??) The Khorns moved my Cornwalls out of the 2ch room and they became the mains in the HT. There is still the Academy doing center duty and it is driven by the AVR but the mains are driven by a Fort'e 3 power amp. I added a 1500w backup power supply/filter to clean up power in the HT. As the plant is closing down, a lot of industrial equipment is hitting the auction block and I won a group lot bid at $156 for a 20 amp Square D Topaz isolation transformer (Used these are at about the $500 mark give or take and about double that for new) as well as half a dozen other things that are of less use to me.. It will be installed into the 2 ch room. Actually 2 ch room is more a multi use space now. I have a 48" 3D flat screen centered in the LP and I rebuilt my PC into a fairly powerful gaming rig. Everything is connected up into the 2 ch stereo and I can honestly say that sitting 6 feet back from the screen and centered between the tube powered Khorns , gaming has a very different feel I am old enough and have enough years to draw full pension from work but it will still be a pretty big hit in the income dept. I am too young for SS so it will be a bit tight for the next 3.5 years until that can happen but I am sure we will work it out. I was blessed to be at this company for so long and to start when I did as my pension package has some excellent medical coverage at a too good to be true (but it is) price each month so the wife's medical needs will be taken care of. Sorry guys (and gals) for being away, this is a great community and I have been away too long.

  4. Yes but adding humidity to the air is not the goal, just the side affect. Were going to really screw up Billybob now. He was a friend of ours last week, with his relatives, patron and 1800, along with some lemon lime salt.

  7. Not sure about that design but with the other design the water just flows down the 6" thick corrugated paper that is designed for this. I guess as the water is evaporating it cools the rest of the water at the same time ? They are used a lot down here in greenhouses, even though we have high humidity they still use the water. I would imagine the extra humidity is good for the plants.

  8. Very much the goal in the desert. Dry air is not comfortable. If you have gas heat you know what I mean. Static, and even when it's warm it may not feel warm. Once you get west of Fort Worth it's good to have a humidifier in the winter. Makes it feel warmer and keeps your nose and throat from drying out...and prevents sending quarter inch sparks into your tone arm when you touch it. Trust me. Been there, done that. I take it there are a lot more folks who haven't spent time in dry climates than I would have imagined. Evaporative cooling is not only not rocket science, it's what the human body does to survive. The drier the air the better the result. Oddly, we are at 98 in Houston which is basically a swamp. Don't have a hygrometer but I am guessing the humidity is way down under the big Bermuda high. Barometer reads 30.1. In any event, even though it's a couple of hours to sun down, we have a good breeze and it's quite comfortable in the shade. That is rare here. Just checked NOAA for Seabrook and the humidity is 50%. That is dry as hell for Houston. No wonder it feels fine in the shade with a breeze. Dave

  9. I suppose so as one takes water out of the air and one puts water in it. A swamp cooler is WAY more efficient as far as energy usage however.

  10. Although not a card carrying member of the Coffee Cables bunch I tend to following the thread on a daily basis. This swamp cooler thing - it sounds to me it is the reverse design of a dehumidifier? Am I close?

  16. I did go see them and could have purchased them. But they were beat up almost beyond recognition, he might or might not have the grills at his house which was somewhere else. They had only scraps of labels left. Also had stapled to the back a repair ticket from a source not generally known for their good work on vintage electronics. The bottoms were worse than the tops. But mostly I felt like this was someone I didn't want to either know or do business with. Walked away. Thanks for the input from everyone though.

  20. Great to have you back Cal. Hope things go smoothly for you over the next 3 1/2 years and you can take care of your wife. Good to know that your health plan was and is a solid one. Life will be better here with you back on the corner. Cal thanks also for the very interesting information on work. Best regards Moray James.

  23. That were me and you are very welcome. I would have been in the dog house a long time if I had brought another pair of KHorns home anyway . I trust you are enjoying them. Funny but when talked around the time you got them I got the impression you were a self employed custom metal worker/fabricator, I had no idea you worked for Boeing at the Long Beach plant. If you have been commuting everyday to Long Beach this forced retirement is going to add 3 or 4 hours to your life every day. I know you will not miss that.(I mean the commute). I am very sorry to hear your wife is still sick and requires constant care. God Bless you. P.S. I would love to see /hear those Rosewood Ks, maybe we can work something out?

  24. The "Barney" CD was my daughter's favorite on my modest living room system when she was tiny. Also, there were "Wheels on the bus" type cassettes. Then came a series of programs about Beatrix Potter and her story books. Theme music for those programs was composed by Colin Towns from Ian Gillan's solo bands, so there was a connection for me. Then son came along, he just liked to listen to what "Daddy" listened to. About the time daughter was eight and son was three, they discoverd a song on an Ian gillan solo album that they thought was perfect for family dancing. So dance we did, and laughed. Now , when we do housework (when children and I are here at the same time), they introduce me to what they haved discovered. Much of it is interesting at the very least. And daughter may even put on a Blackmore's night album. Always let your children share in the listening choices. You'll will be the happier for it. John

  25. Cal, First and foremost, take care of your wife as that is what truly matters! Good luck and best wishes for the two of you in this present economy. Finally, when you find you have the time, post pics of your Rosewood K-horns or it didn't happen!..... You know the drill! Best wishes..... Roger

  26. Forced retirement is a shock, as well as having to adjust. But you will and you'll find there's much more to life than Boeing. While no such news here yet I have come to grips that with the tanking of drilling I may be on such a list. I'm adjusted already and have planned for a Landing Zone. Good luck to you, and welcome back! Dave

  27. I would hardly call the HPS versions of the MWM bins as "knockoffs" since they were all built by Gary Gillum, and his company (with PWK approval), former Klipsch Chief Engineer and co-inventor/patent holder of the MWM with PWK.

  36. If you're not able or don't want to install a full security system I would advise the little door and window alarms. Have a magnet and small battery powered screamer. Not expensive and may be enough to deter someone breaking in. We have these, and I shoot guns outside on my little 4 acres enough that all know I'm armed.

  37. So the circulation of water through the system gives it aeration, causing the water to cool down lower than the ambient temp., of the water, in the base. Continuous running of the system causes the base water to get cooler than the ambient temperature. Almost got it but, need to process still. Thinking the water according to the diagram is not just flowing out of the tubes. but spraying out via nozzles. Or is that aeration of the water caused by the blower fan?

  38. toxic for acetaminophen is 150mg/kg Roger. I'm sorry for your Friend's passing. I won't ask your beliefs, but I hope He is in a better place and Pain Free. john In conversation with Pharmacists I have been told it is not the Oxycodone in Percocet, or Hydrocodone in Vicodin that is the real danger. But the Acetaminophen (Tylenol) that burns out the liver. Alcohol and Tylenol just makes it happen faster. That's why they have reduced the tylenol in the compounds. I have used controlled Pain medications for over 35 years now. Been a productive member of society. Employed until my Dr. told me I could not be expected to hold any job any more. I disagreed and kept hoping to go back to work. Well finally I did not have a job to go back to. If I were to take a Nursing Job and anything went wrong while I was working against Dr.'s orders it would not be good. So I give up. I will try to live life as comfortable as I can. Deal with the BS that I will have to go through to get the pain medications that help. At least I know enough to be able to advocate for family members and advise as I see fit.

  39. Very, very sorry to hear about the hearing loss, and your approach seems to be consistent with many in the hobby. Me, I've been in this game for a decade know, with relatively little ducats to throw at it, but excellent guidance by fellow hobbyists along the way. Me I go in and out. sometimes I'm listening to the system, and sometimes I'm listening to the music. Doesn't take me long at all to switch gears, . I'm not ashamed to be an audiophile. I have no reluctance to tell someone that's what I am. Indeed, I take pride in it. To me it just means someone who is searching a particular stratum of one of life's many joys. And truth be told aren't we all searching for something in one fashion or another. ("yeah my cars keys" is not an allowable response)

  40. I think you have to be a speaker builder, x-over craftsman and have a hand in building or understanding tube and SS amps. Anything less and you are just a fanboy reading specs and chasing what everyone else thinks is at the top of the pile. That doesn't mean you cant love and enjoy music, it just might mean that you might have swapped drivers, networks, horns and cables so much that you cant remember what your factory speaker sounded like or if you're actually in a better place with all these mods or you're tired of rolling equipment and just want to settle in with what you have. I am not a true audiophile even though the people on the outside would see me as one. My woodskills are crap, 3 years trying to understand and compute a swamped network, nada. Yep, and I just bought my latest amp on its reputation. Hand me the pom poms.

Ask a fish head anything you want too... They wont answer, they can't talk! A baby fell out of the window! You think that it's head would be split! But luck was with it that morning... It fell in a barel of shaving cream, feel nice and clean, shave every day and you'll always feel keen! Shaving cream, we had our girls singing that in school, got a phone call on that one we did.

  45. Micheal, Gary is saying the room/boundry interaction with the mains selected a 60 Hz XO from autocalibration. Looking at your data, 60 Hz is a nice starting place for everything(Universal or global XO for all speakers). An easy way to do it is to pick the XO point of the weakest speaker which is 60 Hz. The 3 db spec of the speaker is not that important because that was in an open field or anechoic chamber. Once speakers are in the room there is usually some gain picked up. Also this is a multichannel set which adds even more gain. You will not damage anything and a 60 Hz xo, you won't miss anything.

  48. Had to make a quick decision - only one (pair) left on Ebay (new) RF7 at a good price (B stock) and not too far away (free shipping). This solves a number of issues. So, up for sale are a pair of Chorus I (oiled oak) and a 1978 Belle Klipsch (oiled walnut). Those of you who know me and have been here know all my stuff is in excellent condition. I'll be posting this in Garage Sale later. The early bird catches the worm.
