  1. Maron had a heart attack last Saturday, and then another one while he was in the hospital. They have had him in a medically induced coma for the past week. Please pray for him in his hours of darkness, that he can come back and lovingly skewer all of us once again. He is one of the last gray haired eminences with ties to all of PWK's wrecking crew of tin foil hat experimenters.

  4. Good evening my friends.............we are back home, had lots to do once we got here..........Had to get my furnace back into ONLINE mode.. New filter, new cartridge for the humidifier (April Aire) some vacuuming and cleaning... Powered it up since shutting down back in May, lots of 'hot metal' smell in the house for a few cycles. All ok now, house went from 58 to 70 degrees in short order Supposed to go down to 21 degrees tonight! I covered the 3 Fuchsias on the deck with flat sheets, but all the others are too big and over 8 feet up! Probably wake up to some frost bitten Lantanas I'm afraid... Thanks again for the compliments on the sea photos...... You are all too kind! OT, those birds of prey are good for basically only ONE job = killing machines!........not much smarts for anything after that... Good night for now everyone... ...........Gary

  7. Mornin' gang. Been awol for a couple days. Bunch to catch up on. Weekend was good but busy. The fun part was Halloween shopping with Better Half Sunday morning. We do an annual event with a group of friends that calls for costumes, etc. Except for the cost, the shopping and event are actually fun. Gary ... great pics, as always. Don't think I've ever even stepped foot in that state, but it looks great. Thanks. Enjoy the day, guys, and cheers to all.

  8. Good morning all. I hope everyone had a nice weekend. I spent some time at a friends house listening to music. While I was there, I picked up a Graham SLEE Special Edition phono preamp. It mates very well with my Roksan Radius 5 table in my back room system. Life is good.

  10. Mark and the rest of all y'all... we need to be clear that "y'all" is singular and "all y'all" is the plural.

  12. The misconceptions are interesting. Most people probably don't even realize they're listening to horn loaded drivers when they're at a live concert or movie theater.

  13. Y'all callin' me a liar? heh heh... then there are a lot of people to tell they are using it wrong. Funny... I asked my brother who is an English professor. He said that some people use y'all in the singular but it's not correct... used mostly by TV shows and northerners trying to prove their southern accent. He thinks 'all y'all' is relatively new... 2 or 3 decades or so. And this is from a guy who I've heard say y'all more than anyone I know. I remember hearing it and thinking that 'all y'all' was pretty redundant but maybe just for emphasis that they mean for no one to be left out such as in the phrase, "all y'all can go **** yourselves!" Just an example... not directed at anyone on this forum.

  15. I'm gonna have to look that up OT.....must be a law against green tea on Monday mornings. LF chose Broncos because of the spread but man they barely pulled it out. Carolina Panthers looked bad early so I switched channels only to learn they spanked my bud bluesboy's Seahawks. Next time Don. Jake slept out last night covered with a comforter. Had to recover him about 3:30am. My chocolate lab would not have tolerated a blanket. Heading up to 62 today and 70 tomorrow. Welcome back Chuck and Gary. Cheers Ladies and Gents

  22. I for one love horn speakers. I have never been disappointed with Klipsch offerings as far as their sound and clarity, although the fit and finish are sometimes in question. There are indeed many who shun the horns for being too harsh but I have never felt that way. I have seen several favorable reviews about the pricey but beautiful Avant-Garde horn loaded speakers. I always get a kick out of the magazines that praise a two way bookshelf speaker with a five inch woofer that costs $6k.... very few want to glorify a nice pair of Klipsch offerings. I wish Klipsch would stop overstating their sensitivity though, nothing worse than seeing the speakers bench tested and the rated sensitivity drops from 98db to 93db or something relative to that. As far as capability I think Klipsch speakers shine with rock music as few others can and the horns help to create an amazing soundstage. By the way, I would love to hear some of those Avant-Gardes...

  24. Did you see the play where the entire Colts team other than the center and the QB shifted to the right sideline. That was the most WTF play I've ever seen in my life! I think that play was worse than the Seahawks last play of the Superbowl pass. I think they just tried to trick them, and weren't supposed to snap the ball unless things looked good. Well it gave to ball to the Patriots in Colts' territory, and they scored. Might have been the difference in the game. At least the Colts played well, something they seldom do against the Patriots.

  25. If your setup is to be in a family room environment without an AT screen, then get the RF7II/RC-64II combo, a good subwoofer, a better AVR or preamp/processor and the amp of your choice. Experiment with crossovers starting around 80Hz on down to say 40Hz, get it set to your liking, and ENJOY the fruits of your labors. Bill

  27. Morning Gang Tarheel that name Hatteras, ah-ha, Cape Hatteras, name stuck with me over the years, had to Google it to see why it was buggin me. Dad's first slighty "Used" boat in the 70s, docked in newport, had a lot of good times on that boat and never went farther than Catalina. chick magnet. http://www.hatterasyachts.com/index.html Up and first cup, need to rest up from the farm work, really want a CornDog but do not feel like doing the walk. Nothing planned, maybe work on the Last McM BassBin a little. Rain spotty throughout Ca, nothing here. looks like 75 today, i like it just fiine

  28. Nice Gary! Enjoying your photos and write up. Sounds like a fun trip and I would have liked to been there for the dinner and vino. I'm sure you have seen the Hatteras light house on your trips to the OBX. Well Gents it's down right chilly here this morning. Wore a medium weight jacket to walk the Jakester. Guess it will be some football today to see if LF's pick (Broncos) win. Don't follow the sport much but I do like wings and good beer. Today I'm going for the hottest. The bar folks have warned me but I have to see for myself. Hell I ate the Chernobyl wings at Hilton Head and the Three Mile Island wings as well. Reading the "Hardware" thread this morning. That's a trip in itself. Last day worker bees.....wring the most out of it. Put it on minermarks tab Cheers Ladies and Gents

  29. So I'm trying to figure out what it is about the look/sound of horns that is all but shunned in the audiophile community. I've been to multiple high end shops and most of the people there shake their head and want to run screaming from the room when I mention horns. I've heard things like they are "honky", they shout at you, shrill, etc. A lot of people won't even listen to a horn and proclaim it horrible just by sight. It's almost like saying dome tweeters are horrible because they're too round. For me, as a musician, I have found horns to be much more lifelike in their presentation. I have no bias towards any speaker, however, and I will base my opinion on what I hear. I do wonder if you did a blind test, if those that proclaim horns terrible, would change their mind.

  30. Well, some of you may remember a number of postings some time ago regarding a crackpot scammer in Indianapolis by the name of Chuck....He is enjoying a significant backlash of attacks right now via CL and other social media for his exploits, and I thought you all would enjoy this posting on CL that I just came across....very creative.... http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/ele/5275349149.html

  32. My Klipsch are down for the moment--due to upgrade work being done so we're listening to another major brand while we wait. The other brand is a nice speaker and is the middle of that line. They don't sound as good as our Klipsch entry level speakers--to my old ears. The Klipsch is way more dynamic and clear--a sound we all prefer here at home. The horn speaker sounds more natural to us and we can't wait to get them back into our system. We're glad we brought Klipsch.

  34. Horns offend the high dollar sensibility of "audiophiles". The fact that my cheap horns sound better than systems costing 10s of thousands is taken as an insult. It is like a lot of high dollar snobishness, senseless and purposely ignorant. Good for us though, keeps our prices down.

  36. Thread custody comes with the speakers! Updates wont come as fast and furious as when Matt had them, but I will update. I've never started a thread so don't want to break my streak. I only used my very first emoji, yesterday.

  37. to keep them in the family, "breaking even" is a win-win outcome I finally figured out what you meant by "keep them in the family" and Mookie's goofy looking ninja emoticon that I couldn't figure out. My browser skipped over your giant SOLD post so I didn't see it until this morning. Congrats to you and Mookie on the re-birth of your newly adopted child. So does Mookie have to start his own thread on how he will complete the finish on the LS's, or does he get custody of this thread?

  41. It probably depends on which receiver you get. With a Marantz preamp you can choose to reroute the LFE material to the mains but I'm not sure it does that with receivers and you don't really have a choice on the matter even if it does. Anybody who thinks the center doesn't get much juice and is otherwise weak sauce except for dialogue ought to watch the Metallica "through the never" movie, most of the kick drums come through the center channel. And... there's ALOT of kick drums. You better have a nice beefy center if you want this movie to sound good. Bass guitar too, lots of bass comes through the center.

  48. Admittedly I'm shooting in the dark here but, I'm not sure so-called Hi-rez files from download sites like HDTracks actually do anything more than license the ability to re-sell the music in various formats/resolution. I seriously doubt they are "remastering" anything considering the rate that new releases appear. As far as I can tell, there isn't any difference between ripping a CD to a high sample rate/bit depth FLAC or WAV file or just ripping it at standard res and then using your computer to upsample to the higher rez verses paying up the ying yang for a Hi-rez download. I can always find the actual CD available for far less $, often brand new on eBay or Amazon, and then have a physical backup copy that's far less susceptible to destruction or accidental loss than a digital file. Some of the older analog recordings transferred to Hi-rez digital files for download from HDTracks still sound kind of crappy. No sense paying for the extra Hi-rez (like 192/24).
