  1. Just wanted to say thank you to whoever it was that sent me out a pair of Klipsch badges, hate to say it but it brought a tear to my eyes. Yeah I'm a big softee when it comes to kindness, just not that common in my life until recently.

  2. This is so freeekin cool! We talked a bit and it turns out he got back into audio about 3 years ago, got the equipment bug and has been buying a lot of 70's stuff, mostly into Pioneer. Bought these at an auction and got a big negatory from the missus. Had a friend of his son evaluate them and he told him that not working about $700 is fair. Now Alan figures that since people are going to have to spend money to travel and get them, $500 is really fair. Well we talked a bit and he tells me that he only hooked one up and could only get sound out of the woofer, and he's worry he might damage his classic Sansui so he stops his testing there. Doesn't matter to me I've got to go for this, right. So I commit to buying and we will meetup on Sunday. He lives in a Virginia county that has only one stoplight about 3 hours from me. He calls me about 15 minutes ago, got to fooling around with them and now both work except for one horn. Any change in the price because of this I ask, thinking it only reasonable. Nope, he says, I wouldn't do that to you!!!!!!!!!!!! What a great guy. I'm going to go through my equipment stash to see what I can toss his way by way of thanks. I'll also be bringing him some records, some sealed by way of thanks. The audio gods are smiling on me. Khorns for Christmas, Khorns for Christmas, Khorns for Christmas, he hums to himself, the germination of a smash Christmas hit song bubbling up through his giddiness.

  4. i think it comes from 20 years in the Coast Guard...i love excitement. we had a bomb threat one day at work. The building was evacuated. Bomb folks get there and want help from someone with knowledge of the building (four story building). I was all over that job...got to walk around with those cats checking out the building. Didn’t find anything; but, the “what if” was enough to get the adrenaline going. Some of us just like to swim against the current.

  10. Maybe this has already been-done (in which case, I apologize and ask the mods to delete this thread). If not, I just have to sound-off about the contributions of WMcD. Over and over and over again, those posts are invaluable. I just can't say enough. On a board with amazing contributions (in the thousands of posts) from all-kinds-of-people, well--you guys know who you are. And you know how cool it is that you all have shared sooo much knowledge for so long. Today, it's about Gil because I've been so moved by his contributions. Bravo!

  15. They actually have an upgrade program where you can trade in your old motor and get a brushless one. It's basically $160 up front to get brushless but if you trade in one it's $140. Not a real good incentive to go brushless right off the bat. Only thing I'd be interested in is longer battery life, apparently they are more efficient. Otherwise, fast is actually bad right now with a 7 year old first starting out, no reason for it.

  23. Thebes, Congratulations on your early Christmas present. That means there's still time for Santa to bring you a nice SET to both warm the room and provide plenty of power for your new toy. Yep, the top is removable; just bring a power screwdriver. Here's a web site with great images of a Style "D" Klipschorn. http://www.hifido.co.jp/KWKlipsch/G0201/P0/A10/E/0-10/S0/C14-81984-14194-00/ You can also Google "Klipschorn decorator model" and click on images. That's where I found this link. Depending upon your wood working skills, you can convert a Style "D" model to a Style "C" or "B". Style "B" has the nice collar separating the bass horn from the top section. Lee

  25. Ajrsiu, Welcome to the forum. If you "must" have built in speakers and you really want a somewhat realistic HT experience, then I would go L-C-R in walls up front at near seated viewing/listening level framing your video monitor/screen and go in ceilings for surrounds. If you can go in walls for side surrounds that would be better. Now if this room is more for casual TV watching and you have another room you could dedicate for movies, then the builders suggestion could work ok. Bill

  26. Wonderful-thread! What I have to add is that, there is _no_ _such_ _thing_ as a box that is too-well-built. Yes, of-course, angels, heads of pins--all-that. It turns-out to be about Stiffness. Marine-ply. Or perhaps Baltic-Birch. Many-many-layers. The research has been done. It's Out There. I'll not "advocate" for a single thing -- except (perhaps?) that anyone (everyone?) should take the Time to research the Problem. Hint: keywords -- "modulus of elasticity" <-- aka Modulus. Upshot? Use _great_ ply. it's _always_ worth whatever it costs!!!

  30. The inexpensive ones are O.K. for measuring overall SPL, but no good for measuring frequency response. Even though some compensation tables/charts are available for the RS meter, the various ones out there contradict each other. To measure frequency response, it's best to go to the REW (room eq wizard) site and download it. It's FREE, a real public service. You will need a calibrated measurement microphone (~~ $100). You enter the calibration into REW, then run REW.

  34. They sound flat just like my multichannel amp ATI AT2007. They really do sound awesome, and my Chesky dynamic drum test track doesn't clip anymore That thing has 44dB of dynamic range, so if you play 10dB above a room's noise floor you will clip even on efficient speakers like the P-39f without a powerful amp. I think the P-39f's must have some wide impedance swings too with their three 9" woofers, so nothing wrong with having a beefy amp, but I don't run my mains in full so who knows... I've been 3 lights away (out of 12) from clipping on the XPR-1's on some very dynamic tracks already! I don't think I'll ever clip again though and I've had things pretty loud. Is it worth almost $2k for the very few tracks with that kind of dynamic range? Probably not for a normal person but I'd assume movies may have a wider dynamic range than most music if there's a gun shot or something across the front, etc... Replacing my leather chairs made more of a sound difference and was cheaper. However, I think the slew rate might be better on the XPR-1's, but I haven't measured it and can't find a value online.

  37. That's my concern as well. Electro-gadgets become junk when one of several things happens: -Loss of User Guide -Batteries wear out and are unavailable or cost more than the original product -Software updates render it unusable I have a box full of said articles in my garage. A mechanical lock might have a life of 20 years. Do you think this will last 20 years?

  39. Ive done my fair share of speaker configurations... stacking and spreading horizontally. Its not better or worse, it's just different. Ultimately, I prefer the imaging one gets from single speaker placement over the wall of sound configuration... but it's all personal preference.

  40. Some may remember that at one time stacking large Advent speakers was in style. It produced more of what was good about the speaker (smoother and better bass,etc.).

  41. What is the point of all this speculation. ..? No one here has any idea what it cost Klipsch to keep their doors open. It's so easy to guess and speculate what it cost to run a business but until you try to keep a business profitable while also providing descent wages, insurance and other benefits we all want it's very easy to be critical of others because you don't have all the facts..!!!! At the last employees appreciation lunch in Hope in early 2015 some of us had a chance to share time with Roy and he was talking about how he was doing everything in is ability to see Klipsch and Hope manufacturing growing in jobs and manufacturing in the US...!!! If you can beat Klipsch performance/quality for the price of it's newly manufactured products with competting new products from similar manufacturers then good luck to you. Comparing Klipsch to Bob's business is apples to oranges and if Bob is like most small business owners I know he will tell you it's a reall struggle to keep a business running in this day and time. My 2 cents, miketn

  42. 2005 Buick LeSabre, bought it with 30,000 and have abused the Shite out of it to the tune of 268,000 miles. It sits outside , not in the garage. It has never been in the Garage and with the exception of good oil maintenance, it has been beat on daily. Speed limiter kicks on and off at 108 mph and 106 mph and was fast enough to recently avoid a ticket Roger

  43. I feel like I can recommend the DIYSoundgroup.com because it is not a direct competitor for a Klipsch product. Klipsch has a high-quality completely finished speaker which will hold its value when you sell it. With rare exception there is no DIY speaker kit that will compare to the Klipsch when all aspects of the speaker are considered, which includes warranty and service. DIYSG has an extensive line of Do It Yourself speaker kits, and it is not run as a profit making entity, it is a service for the DIY community. There is a huge amount of proven designs that will give you outstanding sound for very minimal outlay of cash. It is run by one guy, Erich, who is a national treasure for us DIY guys. Most of their designs are 2-way and are high efficiency horn driven designs, just like Klipsch. I have some outstanding Klipsch speakers, and some DIY Soundgroup speakers that will stay right with the Klipsch in terms of sound quality and efficiency. On the site AVSforums.com there is a very active DIY community for exactly what you are trying to accomplish. I think you could go there and repeat post #1 but that is what I would NOT do. I suggest you post there, state your desire for a BIG horn driven sound, and then answer these questions: 1. Budget 2. Purpose - (music, home theater, all of the above) 3. How many speakers (2.0, 2.1, 5.1, 7.1, etc.) 4. Listening environment (man cave, living room, theater room, computer speakers, etc) Let the very experienced and knowledgeable people there guide you and help you figure out how to get the best bang for your buck. There are many people on Klipsch.com who are also members on AVSForums.com. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-diy-speakers-subs/ I already have some guesses what might work for you, but I'll stop here while you ponder your next move.
