  1. It's spring, and once again I am having to clean carbs and tanks. If you don't know, with ethanol in gas, water gets drawn out of the air and contaminates your gas tanks and carbs with water, rust and sludge. It also dissolves and dry rots rubber and some other materials. There is absolutely no virtue to it. In any event, I think it would be nice to have a reminder next fall for everybody to drain tanks and carbs at the end of the season. It isn't a bad idea without the ethanol, but with it, it is a necessity unless you like taking carbs apart. The easiest way is to not fill the machine up when you are done, and let it run until it dies. If you have a carb with a drain bolt, you can drain what's left that way. There are fuel additives, but I haven't had much luck with them. Mini rant: I hate ethanol, and wish they would finally stop adding it to fuel. Production of this stuff creates a larger carbon footprint than gasoline. It's dumb.

  2. Two La Scalas will play as loud as four Chorus speakers and I much prefer a totally Horn loaded speaker system as well as the clarity youy will have on vocals. Before I upgraded to Klipsch TSCM's, I used to have Klipschorns with a La Scala center. Definately run 3 across the front if you can fit them and fill in the bottom end with a horn loaded sub. Roger

  6. A few years ago, the head of our music dept. called me to help set up a new tv and stereo at her house. She had a lightning strike and lost some components. She had a funky, cheap particle board media center, that she took a hammer to just for the tv to fit. She had (and continued to use) her two speakers stacked one on top of the other in the corner. Weird is all I can say. Most of the music faculty had boombox systems in their offices. Bruce

  8. Well I sent a note to the wife of my R2R tech and she answered with a phone call. She said she had no idea where it may be....that there were many boxes in the garage that were too heavy for her to get down. She invited me to come take a look. She called back Sunday and said she had found it under some covers. We tentatively set next Friday for me to come pick it up. I have no idea what condition it will be in but hopefully all together. She seemed nice and still very rattled by the loss of her husband. Having loss my wife I assured her at some point she will not feel the pain so acutely and then we chatted for a bit...... Here is the deck in question.

  9. My room is 13' x 19' with 10' ceilings. Definitely not too small of a room for 3 LaScalas, 4 RSW-15's and 4 RS-62ii's.

  10. Dang it Roger! Looks like we've got another one sucked into the abyss of Heritage Speakers. LOL Aaron, I never ever saw myself selling my RF-83's. They were my first NEW speaker (even though I bartered for them in exchange for developing a website for a local installer). I always told myself if I could find a pair of LaScalas for $500 or less, I would buy them just so I could say I had experienced them in my own home, with my own gear and with my own ears. I LOVED the sound of the RF-83's and I have owned a ton of Klipsch over the years, including Forte II and Chorus II. Although the Chorus II sounded nice, they didn't have the same slam that the RF-83's did so I kept the 83's. But the day I purchased the LaScalas, something changed. The LaScalas had ridiculous clarity and detail and vocals were MUCH better than the 83's. The sound was full, and rich. I wanted to give myself a week or two be certain that the LS were the right choice, especially because I have never liked the dated look of the LaScalas. A few weeks later, I purchased a third LaScala from wstrickland. He had a meeting later that month about 45 min from me and offered to deliver the single LaScala to me. Needless to say, as soon as I hooked up the center LaScala, strangely the RC-64 suddenly sounded small. It was at that moment that I realized how good LaScalas were and having three identical LaScalas were absolutely phenomenal! The ONLY thing I was disappointed in was they don't "slam" like the RF-83's, RF-7's, RF-7ii's, CF-4's and KLF-30's that I've owned. This is the last time I saw the RF-83's & RC-64 I did MANY A/B comparisons because I did not want to sell my babies and end up regretting it. The RF-83's are fantastic speakers.....but I have NEVER regretted my decision to keep the LaScalas. Not only did I keep the LaScalas, but I'm now in the final stages of rebuilding the front wall. Ask Roger, I was probably the least likely person to ever want to keep a pair of LaScalas due to their vintage look alone. I've said this before but I can't imagine ever wanting to sell them...until something that sounds better comes along at a great price.

  12. Black satin with no upgrades/mods would go for $800.00 at best. This guy is high. I'd say at this price they better be Mahogany, titanium tweeters, phenolic mids, rebuilt x-overs and the cabs better not be loose.

  19. I know it's absolutely worth it in terms of the value of the speaker but I am speaking more in terms of the size of my theater room which is roughly 21x14 feet. For those that have been following my threads I am sure you know I currently have Chorus 1's as mains and I am in no way unhappy with them, I do love them very much and they are the best speaker I have heard thus far but that is half the reason I want to try the La Scala's I say to myself if these are this good I can't imagine what a pair of La Scala's would be like. If I did this I would buy used of course, and would without a doubt keep my Chorus's and probably move them to the rears which I sort of feel like is a waste for such a fine speaker but at the same time I would rather do that than get rid of them. They started my Klipsch heritage journey, I will never get rid of them. The main reason I ask if it's worth it is because I feel they might be overkill for my room size. I have dabbled at the idea of Klipschorns but I know that's a ridiculous idea for my current theater room as I would not be able to put them in the corners because I have a pipe coming out of one corner and the other is blocked off as well. I have heard those really require tons more space than what I have also so I figure the La Scala would be a happy medium as I have heard they are sort of like a Klipschorn that does't require a corner. What are your thoughts? Also I am in the CT area if anyone has a pair for sale.

  20. I know there are plenty of conversations going around whether the reference series is measured accurately or not. Just wanted to share my experience with the RP-280F. This isn't what you'd call scientific, but a pretty good indication for me. I tested this with Quartets and RP-280F. Ratings: Quartets: 97.5db RP-280F: 98db I hooked up my Quartets to an NAD T758 and matched all speakers to 75db on the test tone with an SPL meter (it actually settled at about 75.6). They ended up at -8db from the amp settings. I then hooked up the RP-280 and had expected I'd have to re-do all the settings. Played the test tones, and the SPL meter mostly settled on 76.1db without adjusting anything. Since there is a bit of fluctuation with the test tones, I left all settings the same. What's my point? It seems the specs are rather accurate based on my tiny bit of testing. So if the reference series has any inflated specs, so did the Quartets.

  22. Thanks RK! Since the RSW was gone I decided to play with the TTLS and after some more experimenting with locations. ..I've decided to hang onto it. So as far as this thread goes, the only thing left are the 18 inch EV subs. I'm lowering the price to $300 for the pair. They're not really for HT but rather to use in a very large room or preferably outdoors to just let the music rip. Sent from my SM-G920R4 using Tapatalk

  26. It was working fine one evening. The next day I turned it on I didn't notice immediately if it was working or not. About 30 mins in i realized that all my bass was coming from my front floor standing speakers. So my RCA cable comes out and then I have a pig tail to go into the red and white on the back of the sub. My other receiver runs just a single monster RCA cable to my sw-112. Will I be able to check with that RCA cable into the rw12d? I disconnected my back left speaker wire and ran it to the left high port on the back of the rw12d and it works. So I am so incompetent that i have no clue where to go from here. Thanks

  30. The Pickerings are also excellent depending on the version, I have the XV-15 (moving iron) with a D4500S stylus (shibata). The XSV versions are also great cartridges. Stanton and Pickering are basically the same company which I found out earlier last year. The brush actually works very well on both my 681 and 881. They are dead quiet after being broken in. The Stanton 500 is a DJ cart, that's why it didn't sound that good. It's more of a conical tip for scratching purposes. One other cartridge I forgot to mention which is about $100.00 more than your range is the Grado Sonata V2. That is going to be my next cart. They run about $600.00. Depending on the table though, you may get a hum,so I'd speak directly to them and ask. Depending on the arm also, you may need a shim. I know on my Dual 701 I will need one. You may also want to try out the Denon 103r and get the wooden body from Soundsmith.Again, the sound on their stock cartridge wasn't for me, but this one is supposed to knock the socks off the standard version.

  32. I wouldn't trade those RPs for anything less than Fortes. Heresy's remind me of the little axe-wielding dwarf from Lord of the Rings. Heresy 1's have the same tweeter and mid range as a Cornwall or Belle. Put them with a good horn loaded sub and they will sound better than Forte' and definitely better than any of the new stuff. 34. It looks valuable. Tannoy, JBL and Altec had corner stuff like that. I'd say with that horn, it was a theater version of one you could get for a home. The home version probably had a horn behind the grille. It looks like a treasure... Just my opinion. Have pictures of the drivers?

  44. Welcome to the rabbit hole. Your journey may be very expensive before you reach your destination. You've stumbled onto what many consider the very best loudspeaker systems ever devised. And I might add, that you'll enjoy every dime you spend. I have no first hand knowledge of the Heresy. But the Heritage line as a whole is something to behold. You might move to the Heresy, then you'll hear a Lascala...
