Today Jim Hunter brought over the first batch of tapes for archiving. All I can say is "Wow. Wow. Wow. First one on was from 1958, Rule Beasley jazz band engineered by PWK at KOSY radio in Texarkana. While all I have to monitor with are the Audioengine A5+, the sound is astonishing. Very quiet, excellent image. The music is awesome jazz! Jim and Klipsch will have to OK the release but I hope we can make this available for download in the not too distant future. First thing is that when Gil said this is like Howard Carter is correct. As was said when asked "What do you see?" when Tut's tomb was entered, "Wonderful things!' is the answer, though heard rather than saw. I also compare to the Dead Sea scrolls in the since that these tapes are incredibly fragile. We first learned by experience what PWK meant by his labels "M Master" and "P Master." The Ms are edited from the 10" session masters. None of those in this batch but hopefully they are there. The M's are the "keeper" takes made via a dub and spliced. Every splice has to be carefully replaced as all the splices have totally lost adhesion. The P tapes are what, in my day, we called "running masters." These are third generation copies of the the M edited masters used to copy for distribution. We just worked with P masters today as the transfers I made were just for test purposes of the system. Even being third generation they are amazing! Incredibly quiet, excellent image, real piano. We will play them at the Hope gathering. Be there or be square! I cannot express the honor I feel to be involved in this. I am grateful for the trust that Klipsch and Jim have placed and intend to perform this work with all the experience I've gained in my entire life experience. So many old tricks came back as I handled these tapes. Back to the future! To paraphrase the LP cartoon recently posted "If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 7.5 inches per second you are going to hear some SERIOUS SHIT!" Dave2 points

The .707 RMS is factored in before arriving at the max power of an amplifier (at least it should be). So if they measured 171 watts then that is what your amplifier made. Many manufacturers under rated the max power of amplifiers so they can boast better distortion numbers at full rated power.2 points

The aluminum strip that has the word 'Klipsch' on it has the model of the crossover. Clean it off so you can read it. Most all the schematics are in a post pinned at the top of the Technical Modifications pages. Given the age of these, the capacitors should probably be replaced, but first, loosen the screws on the terminal block and re-tighten. That may help. Do you have a meter to check voltage/current/resistance? If so, you could then remove the two wires to the woofer and measure the resistance. They are four ohm woofers, but the dc resistance will be slightly different and I don't have the figure for it. If you get an infinite reading, either a lead is broken/burned through or come loose from the speaker. You could open up the woofer compartment by removing the bottom, but it's a lot of screws. The bottom would also likely be stuck on pretty tight due to the old gasket. And... welcome to the forums! Bruce2 points

You're already as close as possible to Khorn sound without corner placement... It's called a LaScala. Your options... 1) Build yourself a horn loaded subwoofer to go with the LaScalas. 2) Buy a pair of Khorn's. 3) Buy a pair of Jubilees with the 402 horn on top and you'll have, according to many, better than Khorn sound. 4) Anything else would be a giant step back...2 points

I can't speak for doc but I don't believe he's talking about a single sub set up. Correct. However, I'm not talking about randomly distributing subs throughout the room either. We can name drop all day long, but the performance is what matters at the end of the day. Maybe all those experts need to read up on this simple concept: http://www.nubert.de/downloads/optimierung_der_tieftonwiedergabe.pdf?PHPSESSID=qctxokyy http://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-diy-speakers-subs/837744-double-bass-array-dba-modern-bass-concept.html1 point

Hey everyone! It's been a long time since I've been active on the forum! I don't even recognize most of the names here any more. I'm living in an apartment these days and, unfortunately, need to part with my La Scalas. There is barely room for them and they're mostly just collecting dust. It's a pair of '76 La Scalas that I originally picked up back in 2009. I replaced one of the woofers with a used K-33 when I first got them. One of the woofers had a burnt voice coil. They have AA xover networks and everything else is original. They're black. Local pick up only, no shipping. I've attached some photos. I'm asking $900 for the pair. If your interested, I'm in Little Rock, AR. I'd be happy to show them to anyone interested. Edit: The speakers have been sold!!!!!! Daniel1 point

If you look at the curves of the 6L6 and 6550 you will find that they are very similar; however, the 6550 has more plate dissipation. Both the MC30 and MC60 seem to basically use the same circuit with the MC60 modified with an appropriate power supply for the 6550. Of course, the output transformer will be different as the MC60 will be wound to handle more power output, Now from a MC30 to MC40 there are more substantial differences as the MC40 has a solid state power supply, cathode feedback to driver stage, and a filter choke all of which are different from the MC30. It has been a few years now since I bought mine in 2007, but the thing that attracted me to the MC30 was a much greater selection of "cool" tubes that can be obtained and rolled in place of the 6L6 as opposed to the selection to roll in place of the 6550. For example, there is the metal 1614, the British Genalex KT-66, the 5781A, and Tung-Sol 5881, among several others. Most of the 6550/KT-88 are new production or the NOS tubes are rare or priced out of range such as the solid black plate Tung-Sol 6550 or the British Genalex Gold Lion KT-88s. Of course, there is the new production EAT KT-88s for about $1,600 a quad. If you decide upon the MC60 and the venerable 6550/KT-88 series tubes, if it were me, I would probably have just kept the VRDs and looked into this MagneQuest transformer upgrade for the VRDs. http://magnequest.blogspot.com/2016/01/nos-valves-vrd-amplifier-with.html1 point

The 30's use the 6L6 output tube, the 60's use 6550. Research tells me a restored 30 has some of the best mid-range you could ask for, a little soft both top and bottom. The 60's with more controlled bass, extended top end and not as lush mids as the 30's. Seller is a great fellow and hasn't decided which or both pair to sell. Either way I will most likely own one or the other, or both.1 point

Sure, a few day adoption is no problem, Thank you Edit; for anyone wanting to use bamboo.......the bamboo on the front of the bar is not real, it's 2" PVC pipe, and it's very easy to get it to look real bamboo, I can hand someone a piece and they always ask where can they get bamboo that size, they can't tell the diiference.1 point

Oh and here is the blog I wrote for these beauties: LINK Also, would y'all be interested in a bunch of production photos that I have? The production photo on the 70th Anniversary Heresy III page is a legitimate shot of these speakers. Not one from years past. If you guys are interested, I'll edit a bunch of them and post them here and probably on our flickr account as well.1 point

I'm with mustang guy on this. Most all my Klipsch are driven with Bob Carver power. I don't own any of Bob tube amps. I use the old SS amps from the 90's. Most of my Carver amps are the TFM and the "t" series. For me, it's what Heritage speakers I'm playing at the time. My LaScala's I might put a few watts at em. But if I want to shake the foundation of my home I'll power up the Chorus with a big TFM-55x and feed 375+ watts at em....... Is it too much??? It's what I'm listing to. I like to feel the music... Do I listen to music a high volumes all the time???..... ahhh no..... But I want to really jam out and "feel" the music I'll put the watts to my Heritage speakers. jjptkd....... I also dream of Silver 7's...... or the big TFM-75......yea I'll keep dreaming lol lol MKP :-)1 point

Yes, agree 100% with the above statement. There is no such thing as "too much power," that is what the volume control is for. I think the important thing is quality amplification and with quality amplifiers the more powerful the more expensive. Klipsch speakers only need so much power so spending the extra money on watts that you will never use may be a waste, especially if the budget is tight and you could really use that extra cash in other parts of the system.1 point

You remind me of Sam's Club with the stuff you sell. You might not have every model, but what you have is exactly what everybody wants!1 point

Another thought (other than a pair of Jubilee's), get the K402 top horn and a pair of something like the Danley DTS-10 subwoofers and convert your LaScala to a JubeScala (bypassing the midhorn & tweeter) This will get you the same mid/upper end of the Jubilee yet still add some oomph to the bottom of your LaScalas. Slap an active crossover in there & watch the smile grow.1 point
