  1. I've been wanting a pair for a long time, and finally landed a pair locally. Got what I consider to be a great deal. Bought from the original owner, who primarily used them to listen to classical music. They are CW1's, made in 1982. Finish is Walnut Laquer. I opened up the back of one of them (I like the screw on back panel!), because I had to see what drivers and crossover were in them. They have the B-2 crossover, K-33-E woofer, K-77-M tweeter and K-55-V midrange driver.. One question I have is whether the midrange and tweeter horns came from the factory wrapped (covered) in what looks like mortite? These both are. Got them placed in my listening room, but I'm not sure what the consensus is on placement. Any tips? Also, I tried them driven by my Carver SS amp, since that's all I have right now. I have a Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum being delivered Monday that I'm really excited about. But even with the Carver, they sound GOOD. Ran through some Crusaders, CSNY, Earth, Wind and Fire, and finally cranked up "Whole Lotta Love". Even my wife was impressed with that one! Compared to the Forte II's I used to have (which I really liked) it's no contest. So, I need suggestions on placement. My room is 12' x 17' and fully treated (first reflection points, bass traps, etc.). I have them about 20" from the back wall, and pretty close to the side walls now, slightly toed in. I'll play around with, but suggestions are welcome. I'm a happy camper! Tom

  4. It's amazing what a bucket of Duratex can do with a speaker like that: https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/156591-beater-la-scalas-are-done/ Assuming they work and everything is there, I'd offer the guy $750 cash and buy a bucket of Duratex and a couple Klipsch logos for a total spend of under $100. Then you would have some $1,200 or higher speakers.

  5. Welcome to the forum with your first post! That's a good question, and it's been made more difficult by the current model AVR's because IMO they obfuscate their numbers making it confusing to figure out how much power per channel is produced. Take for instance Onkyo is listing power on their AVR's with ONE channel driven. People will see the high power number and may not bother to read further, and may not understand what the numbers mean. If you can figure out how much power is being used in a typical 5.1 setup you're a better man than I am. Check these specs on the ONK 656: That being said: I like to take the highest power rating on the speaker, and increase it by 25% on the AVR for dynamic headroom. If I needed a 100 wpc AVR then I would get a 125 wpc AVR if I could afford it. A 15" sub with 800 watts would be great for that live effect on movies, it is NOT overdoing it. I would not recommend a 10" sub unless it was going to be used nearfield like beside your computer desk. Many people these days are going with 18" subs, and even a pair of 15" subs is still not overkill. The second sub is not for Sound Pressure Level (SPL) but for evening out dead spaces or nulls in the listening room. A second sub will add about 3 db to the overall loudness.

  8. Couple of updates: The AV is working, but the oil keeps freezing up. It will get the house down to 77 degrees, then freeze. Just pulled the disconnect to let it thaw. Today is my Dad's 90th birthday party. Spent yesterday working on replacing boards in his house to repair a hole left from a floor furnace. Repairing 90 year old wood floors is extremely tedious!

  9. I met one of the general contractors that travels the US building Chipotle Mexican grills. He is also the guy that installs the pair of Heresy's in the wall of the restaurant. I met him while he was installing them at our new restaurant that will be opening next month. Turns out they are the nice finished black Heresy's III's just mounted upside down behind the wall. They come with grills and the new badges on them right out of the box. Where do the grills and badges end up? Usually in the garbage after the install- no kidding! He said he will start keeping them if anyone is interested. He said he will sell grills and badges pretty cheap and he already has several pairs on hand. Here's his info: Juan Betancourt (916)842-8524 Jbetancourt@tri-quest.net Cheers! Trent

  10. After doing some digging inside the cabinets today, I've discovered that I have the K-55-V midrange with the soldered vs. push on wires. Bob Crites tells me that these are fairly rare, and probably one of the best midrange drivers Klipsch has produced. Apparently this design has a 2-piece phase plug, whereas the more common one is one piece (per Bob). So replacing the midrange drivers is not necessary anyway. I'm going to move forward with the recap of the network, the new midrange gaskets and the CT-120 tweeters. Should get me some good return for relatively little money (< $300). Now I gotta decide what placement sounds best in my room. I've tried the full corner/wall option (didn't like it), facing straight forward (good) and then slightly toed in. I think I like them toed in best. Now I need to fool with the distance to the back and side walls. Any suggestions?

  15. Now, back to the speakers in question.....I don't know how good of a woodworker you are, or if you might have a friend or two that is skilled, but those look really close to being rehabbed "naturally", meaning, sanding them down, putting on some wood filler in the chipped areas, and then giving them a medium stain, rather than covering with Duratex. Some of the grain patterns are really nice.....Just be sure to check them out closely for any moisture damage, delamination, etc. Absolutely turn them over and check the doghouse. Whatever you choose to do, I'm sure you'll get plenty of help from the folks here. Take your time, and your patience will pay off.

  16. Those are not too bad. Price is a little high for the condition, IMO. You could certainly make those gorgeous! The seams you mentioned are normal and will be found on most all La Scala's. There is some veneer chipping that will require attention. A full sand, some putty, stain of choice (or not) and some polyurethane. Those are diamonds in the rough. Matt ♪ ♫ ♪

  19. You will have to pry my KG 4's out my cold dead hands. Probably have the only set remaining in South Africa. Got them mint from an ex sound engineer at the State Broadcaster. My second favorite speaker after my Vandersteen 2CE Signatures. They are just plain fun to listen too, make me smile every time. Got some Cornscala D's in the works which should be ready in month or two. Perhaps they will topple the Vandies, cant wait. Klipsch speakers of the Heritage line and all the classics you guys have access to, just are not available here. There are however B&W's in every second home so to speak, never could figure that out.

  25. I cannot tell you guys how psyched I am. Haven't done a 2 channel set up in about 12 years. Recently bought a new home, and the style of the house allows for dramatic wood furniture, so when I saw these Walnut finished beauties pop up on CL, I reacted quickly and secured them this morning after a hasty test listen with the seller's Sansui AU-717. I was sold on them based on pics, but the cones and woofer all looked great. Excuse the lack of better pictures as I was running to work and popped these off for my wife and to document the serials. Guessing based on serial, these were made in 1986? So far, they are hooked up to nothing. In the market for a silver or silver+wood receiver of 70-120 watts. Currently enamored with the CR-2020. Glad to be back!

  27. Got my new receiver all hooked up and everything is as expected. Delivery to my door and meeting James and his wife were the added bonuses. He was brutally honest about this receiver, at times I thought he was trying to talk me out of it. Never was a big Realistic fan but knew they had some quality stuff manufactured for them, and this must be the case here. I also have had a few MOSFET amps in the past that I liked so I took the plunge. I was going for the retro look. I think hooking them up to a pair of Heresy's and putting them in a knotty pine rathskeller, it is like a time warp. Sound as nice as it looks. Thanks James!

  30. I do repairs in the Boston area, specializing in vintage solid state amps and preamps. I can also modify electronics to reduce noise and distortion in many cases. It can be made to work better than new. Usually I buy broken items and sell working items, but this model has led me to accumulate too much stuff that I don't want to sell. So I'm considering a fee-for-repair-service model. This isn't my real job, it's just a hobby; time scales involved may reflect that.

  34. Had my best friend come over for a listen as we have a new grandson that just came home and I'm now a new Grandpa x2. We'll, it was the first time he had the time to listen to it at length. In this photo he wasn't committed as he stood listening. But then he sat down he had the biggest grin ever. Five minutes into it he leaned back and started to enjoy the sound. Klipsch was reaching out & through to a very stubborn person when it comes to sound. He's pretty picky when it comes to his type of music. He likes Chinese type music like the twelve girls. Forty minutes later he asked how much to buy them. Sadly I told him they were no longer making them. He'd have bought some tomorrow!! I've known him for over a decade and that's how he is if he really likes something. Even my wife likes them. The neighbor. Santa Claus too if he'll come by I'm sure. There something to be said of Klipsch sound. Thank you Mr. Klipsch.

  38. Those caps were from Bob i got some when i rebuilt mine. Dont forget to take out that pesky screw and just hot glue it on the board. The diodes could be removed also some say they effect the sound. Only difference mine are 4500 hz crossover points with a new iron core inductor from PE. Those look like Bob might have built those himself.

  44. Hello friends....... Enjoying the 'banter' on exotic woods and the 'cane' grill requests.. Since Dude® was so nice to compliment on my pair of K'Horns I thought I would dig up the photo from years ago after I cleaned and oiled them up... These are the ONLY known pair I have ever seen with WHITE grill cloth, and the Walnut does seem to have hints of red tone in it. From 1968 and made WITHOUT the 'spacer' which was common back in those days. Why these were not made with them is interesting and different. The grain pattern is not too shabby either.. So, for your perusal, here is the photo, and possible idea for the white grill cloth .. PS. Ryan has been to 'Music Hall', and seen them up close and personal, oh yeah, and he heard them too

  46. I'll second (third/fourth??) the idea of making a Jubilee that is cosmetically designed for home decor. The "beauty panel" is likely not enough to get past most WAF criteria but some have been able to pull it off. Something like that image of the original Jubilee that PWK is seen with would work. Something would need to be done with the 402 -- maybe just a "top hat" type of enclosure with grill cloth would do. Another idea, how about a KPT-904 in similar home-use decor? It's small enough to be considered for home use. But beyond all this, there is one thing that really needs to be done more than any cosmetic improvements -- people who have never heard this stuff need to be able to hear them before they buy them. Are there any dealers left that have Klipschorns, Cornwalls, or La Scalas on the showroom floor properly set up and ready to audition? It has been many, many years since I have seen any. I can't remember the last time I saw some in a store -- maybe 20 years ago. The newer generations know sound through earbuds and an iPhone. They have no idea what they are missing. Those that want something better and have interest in Heritage have to rely on word-of-mouth to first find out about them and then make a leap-of-faith when purchasing. That is not easy to do when the prices are in the thousands of dollars. Attending gatherings and audio fests are helpful, but they only reach a minuscule percentage of the population. I have attended the Mid-west Audio Fest, Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, Lone Star Audio Fest and never saw a single Klipsch product at any of them. Something to think about if Klipsch is really interested in increasing sales of this product line.
