  1. Lets get something very clear - my work, whether in the heat or cold, is limited to ground level or very near so. These guys here a combining work and Circ de Soliel. Far above my pay grade - no pun intended.

  5. They are not priced like that on the retail sheets, there is only one serial number for the whole unit, it's not priced separately. It may be possible to request a custom order and save a few bucks but I'm not sure. The units that were lost, were they complete before the fire? If so I would think that the insurance ought to pay for the whole unit in the same way that they will replace your whole roof if only part of it was damaged but the shingles cannot be matched anymore. I'd be using that argument if that is the case even if technically you only lost the bass bin(s).

  14. There are so many negative reports on police departments around the country. Many of them are a service to the public to let us know about what is going on. Today, I had a knock on the door. No expected deliveries or home maintenance people expected. I open the door and there is a police officer at the door. In my mind, what happened. Jay walking can get you on the front page of the news in my town. I was read to plead the 5th even though I did not know why he was at my front door. Could it be our 4th of July partying. I had the cell phone blasting Pandora radio. To my surprise, they were not after me, lol. It was a neighborhood survey to see what we thought about their job performance and community interaction. They ask questions on neighborhood patrol, park safety, bike and riding trails. I gave them glowing remarks since this represent a police department that other communities should strive for. We don't have bogus traffic stops, police that fired on a citizen because they felt threaten(BS) and a ton of lawsuits against our department. Law enforcement does not deserve our blanket approval and support. I can say in our town, they have earned it and are a part of the community at a grass roots level. ,lol or something shocking.

  17. Somehow you assume quite a bit about me from a single post. First of all, I am a Canadian and I am very familiar with the Canadian health care situation. My mom had skin cancer and waited almost a calendar year before she could see a specialist. After the operation was complete and things seemed fine, she found an itchy spot on her face and inquired to the same specialist who then brushed her aside telling her surgeries have to be weighed out once the patient is in the later stages of life...because of costs and rate of return. After four months of back and forth she confided in her general practitioner about her fears and they were relevant. She had more skin cancer. She was again put on a lengthy waiting list. After about six months of discomfort my mom had her family doctor do the surgery. Needless to say he was not a surgeon and the scar he left was from the inside of her nose to the bottom lip along her laugh line. It never healed correctly and she passed away a couple of years later, not from cancer mind you. You really should educate yourself if you live in a country, Canada does in fact have a death panel that was created in Ottawa to weigh out the consequences of should we or shouldn't we operate, perform that bypass or save a life. Here are a couple of good reads for you. http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/jurisprudence/2013/10/canada_has_death_panels_and_that_s_a_good_thing.html http://www.lifenews.com/2014/10/03/death-panels-when-bureaucrats-in-canada-decide-whether-you-live-or-die/

  18. Helping my friend install new 6ft. tall privacy fence around his auto body business/tow lot. Not sure how many linear feet we are doing but I do know I'm looking at $14K of supplies. I imagine we've put in around 100 yds. so far. 90-95 F is getting harder to deal with for this old man. I used to like working, riding bicycle, etc. in the blazing heat. Made me feel like I was really putting forth some effort. The older I get the less time I can work in heat and I hate that. Really puts things in perspective.

  21. Welcome to how Canada pays for its "national health-care" plan! Almost EVERYTHING sold there has an excise tax (which is what it REALLY IS!) added to cover national health care costs...this has been going on for DECADES. That is why so many Canadians from just above the U.S. borders have been shopping IN the U.S. for decades for things that cost more in Canada (not withstanding the currency exchange rates). Unfortunately for the Canadians, their customs at the border have been cracking down for the past number of years on what they bring back from the USA, so that they can collect duties on the items which have "health-care-added-tax" applied to them when sold in Canada. We had Canadian forces come to FT Chaffee, AR when I was coordinating Joint-Readiness Training Center OPFOR augmentation elements for the OPFOR (bad guys) for the "ultimate-laser-tag" war-games there in the early 1990's. They flew in on Canadian Hercs. They knew they would fly back out on them, too. And they could stuff things in amongst the cargo on the aircraft for use in the Soldiers' barracks (ie., avoid Canadian customs charges)...so their Supply warrant officer(s) would get with me and we would go get a Sam's Club membership for them, which was used to buy bulk snacks and soft drinks to sell to their Soldiers for less than what the vending machines charged on FT Chaffee. The profit from that was used to buy things at Sam's Club for the use of the Canadian Soldiers after they returned back to Canada...such as Big Screen TV's, foosball tables, Ping-Pong tables, VCRs, etc. Why? Because there was no other way they could afford to have those things for their Soldiers if making the purchases in Canada due to higher prices due to national health-care expense-driven "excise" taxes on those items. It is was what it was (is)!

  23. It looks like the relative price of the bass bins with drivers is about 78% of the total price of the Khorn--based on a 1969 price list. Admittedly, this is not very good, but it does represent something based on data and not guesses. At today's prices, that would equate to about $4650 per bass bin, assuming the current price of a Khorn is $6K each on Amazon (price includes shipping if Amazon prime member). My recommendation is that you contact a Klipsch dealer to see if there is a Khorn bass bin listed in a Klipsch extended price list for replacement parts/assemblies. I would recommend Cory (MetropolisLakeOutfitters) if you don't already have a dealer in mind. Chris

  30. Michael, trust me, it's not worth the effort to strip them. La Scala's are no doubt the most difficult to strip down with all the nooks and crannies.....Just depends on the look you want as far as paint or other finishes. I have been very, very happy with Duratex, applied carefully and correctly. You can apply it with a highly textured finish, or a very lightly, almost smooth finish, which is what I did. And, it's not difficult, with a decent roller and some attention to detail. You can look back at one of my threads when I refurbed my garage beaters, and see how they turned out. Still very happy with them.

  34. (Update- page 3 for REW curves and Xilica settings for my particular room from Chris A) 'm up and running!!! Everything went smooth today with the delivery. I was listening within an hour. A great big thanks to Chris A for his knowledge, help and Xilica settings!!! These things are awesome!!! Huge thanks to Cory @MetropolisLakeOutfitters it was an awesome purchasing experience. I ended up talking to him on the phone several times. Super guy and knows his stuff when it comes to a special order like this. Since I bought Jubes from him he even gave me a killer deal on the Xilica XP-4080 and a couple of Parasound A23's. Now that I'm broke, lol, I'm going to retire down to the dojo and have a listen. My first impression is these things look big and sound concert big. I was very nervous selling my Klipschorns, but these Jubilees are definitely the next step, and it's not a small step! The bass kicks you in the chest and they actually dig pretty darn deep into the 30hz range. Drums are unreal through these things!

  43. The Heresy was ALWAYS a floor-standing speaker, until everybody wanted a riser added to entertain their "sweet spot" listening position. It actually performs BETTER sitting on the floor without the riser, but the slant riser is what the "sweet spot" freaks wanted to aim the speaker upwards towards their sitting position, so that is what they got. Now the slant riser is part of the package, and now EVERYBODY has to cough up a few more bucks because of it, whether they want/need it or not. The riser was originally an extra-cost OPTION. The offering of it began its days as an option in the late 1970's/early 1980's. Then the slant riser also became an option...eventually so many opted for the slant riser that they stopped offering the standard riser option. Around the time the Heresy II went into production, or shortly afterwards, they upped the price of the Heresy and included the cost of the riser with it, since they were already selling so many of the "optional" risers. They even modified the Styrofoam end packing pieces to include a space for the riser to fit neatly into it. I have two pairs of Heresys, neither of which has a riser added to any of them, although my Heresy II models came with the slant risers, which are still in the packages they were shipped in. I spend much more time wandering around the room or house while they are playing than sitting between them, anyway. And my sitting position works just fine without the need for the risers.

  44. I have great respect for the police...When I was growing up my father was a part time village cop. Only problem I ever had was......many years ago while driving home at 1:00 am getting pulled over and the officer asked if I was drinking and I said only coffee. Then I was asked for my license. Then I was asked what I was doing in his town at 1:00 am when I lived some where else....My answer was "What is this Russia"....wrong question. Guess what ....now I live in that town....go figure. 45. Hotel for women only A group of girlfriends are on vacation when they see a 5-story hotel with a sign that reads: "For Women Only". Since they are without their boyfriends and husbands, they decide to go in. The bouncer, a very attractive guy, explains to them how it works. "We have 5 floors. Go up floor by floor, and once you find what you are looking for, you can stay there. It's easy to decide since each floor has a sign telling you what's inside." So they start going up and on the first floor the sign reads: "All the men on this floor are short and plain." The friends laugh and without hesitation move on to the next floor. The sign on the second floor reads: "All the men here are short and handsome." Still, this isn't good enough, so the friends continue on up. They reach the third floor and the sign reads: "All the men here are tall and plain." They still want to do better, and so, knowing there are still two floors left, they continued on up. On the fourth floor, the sign says: "All the men here are tall and handsome. They are rich and perfectly built" The women get all excited and are going in when they realize that there is still one floor left. Wondering what they are missing, they head on up to the fifth floor. There they find a sign that reads: "There are no men here. This floor was built only to prove that there is no way to please a woman." NOTE: The real moral of the story is to find a woman who doesn't like to climb stairs....

  46. Actually, in CD-4, the front channels and the rear channels are the same quality. During the encoding process, the front channels are mixed with the rear channels in phase and recorded as the main audio on the audible part of the bandwidth. In this way, if you played it on a stereo system, you would experience it as a stereo record, and all the musical elements would be there with left/right separation maintained by vector modulation same as stereo. The subcarriers, there were two, one for each of the two channels, were separated and sent to two channels of demodulation. After demodulation there was ANRS noise reduction, a system similar to Dolby B. These subcarriers are the difference signal generated by mixing the front and rear channels out of phase, this is the separation information that is used to reconstitute the original four channels. To do that, the separation signal is mixed in phase with a sample of the main signal, and the rear signal is canceled out because it was out of phase when mixed in the modulator. This leaves only the front channel which is sent to the output. To get the rear channel, the same two signals are mixed, but the separation signal is mixed out of phase, so that the front channel audio is cancelled out leaving the rear channel signal which is sent to the output. Never are the left and right sides intermingled. So the result is that all four channels are the same quality. And the quality can be pretty good with the right setup. There is delay compensation in the modulator designed to correct for the natural delay in the demodulator. This was done to make the demodulators less expensive because they would not need to have their own compensation. CD-4's best performance was finally realized after the quad era, with the development of the microline stylus, or linear contact, a Shibata variant that performed better at tracking the finer modulations of the subcarrier frequencies. The CD-4 system is similar to FM stereo, except that FM stereo does not use noise reduction for the subcarrier. With SQ and QS and other matrix systems, the left and right channels are intermingled, but they do start out as four independent channels. The encoders mixed the four channels into the two channels of stereo at different phase angles, which the decoder would try to extract. The problem was that the decoders could extract some separation, but not enough. It wasn't until the Tate system was developed that serious separation performance was realized for SQ, and Variomatrix for QS, but by that time, quad was commercially dying. It also didn't help that every cheapo stereo manufacturer had a fake quad system which consisted of a stereo with a Hafler circuit and a "quad" button, that made it sound different, but wasn't true quad. Many people thought they had heard quad, but never did. They were disappointed, of course.
