  1. He was good at INDIVIDUAL marketing, such as visits to dealers, but MASS-marketing was never his strong point, and that is what Bob Moers did to bring the company into the black...beginning in the first half of the 1960's. Once the mass-marketing really got on a roll, and dealer reps were hired on to KEEP IT THAT WAY, then the company took off! But more often than not, the same "tricks" PWK used at the dealerships for demos were continued to be used, just MORE OFTEN and in MORE LOCATIONS. Bob traveled the country and more dealerships were "recruited" to carry the Klipsch line,(often, whether they wanted to or not!). LOL! If they were NOT interested, then he would just back his van up relatively close to the dealer store-front and open the rear doors of the van, each door having a Heresy speaker attached to a shelf mounted on the inside of each door. Then he would just play the Heresy speakers and potential customers would gather around to listen...while Bob talked about horn-loading and efficiency...and most dealers saw the customer interest and changed their minds to get the potential customers INSIDE their stores to listen to a line they were not even carrying, yet!

  3. Here on the Island, we have the Martin Mars water bomber. It's based on Sproat Lake, about a 3-hour drive northwest of Victoria. Only 7 Martin Mars flying boats were ever built, and now there's only one still in service. It's a 4-engine plane, originally designed as a long range ocean patrol flying boat. By 1959, the US Navy had no further use for them, and the last four were to be sold for scrap, but instead, a Canadian consortium bought them and converted them for water bomber service. The big planes have impressive capacities, but now only one is still flying. It can pick up 30 tons of water in only 22 seconds, and a single drop will soak 3-4 acres of land. More info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_JRM_Mars There are lots of YouTube videos of the plane in operation, but most of them are over 5 minutes long. Here's a 4-minute clip from its appearance in 2016 at the EAA AirVenture fly-in at Oshkosh:

  9. Good to see you all here this evening and NOON time for Full Range I HIGHLY recommend this recording... As mentioned over in RTM, this artist can be seen hangin' with the orchestral musicians where we work during the summer. I need to have this album on hand next week, as I will be working at Ozawa Hall (Tanglewood) and it would be very cool to meet him and have him sign it Sonics on this one are amazing!

  10. INTRODUCTION: Here is My Klipsch-tory. Well, sharing was suggested by another member in regard to a recent purchase of Cornwalls and I guess I am bored or perhaps have too much time on my hands so I thought why not just make some feeble attempt at sharing my whole Klipsch-tory. Sure I may bore some of you and that’s ok, just hit the back button or finish reading this when you are having trouble falling asleep. This tale is going to go much farther back than these Cornwalls though, because it was another Klipsch speaker that caused my particular version of audiophilia. And yeah I’ll share pictures and essentially do a long term review as things evolve on these Cornwalls. I’ll also do the same for KG4’s. Because that’s were this story really begins. 11. A friend commissioned me to build a replica cabinet of this vintage speaker (to slightly different dimensions). First pic shows the speaker as built. Second pics show my progress so far. Third pic shows rear of WE753 (using 15" woofer). Dimension on 753 were 30" tall, 20" wide and 14" deep. This build is 30" tall, 24" wide and 14" deep. He is going to place these in an opening in a wall cabinet. The grill (top, bottom and slats) are solid walnut. The sides will be 3/4" BB ply with a 1/2" ply panel veneer on top with curly walnut veneer. I used walnut edge banding to hide the ply edges on 1/2" ply panels. Top is figured walnut veneer matching up with the back of the front top piece which is solid walnut. My friend is using a 12" Altec 601C woofer (he had it reconed at Great Plains Audio) and GPA driver on a mid/tweeter horn (horn bends downward to allow shallow cabinet (14" deep). The grill was a chore to get right. The motorboard is installed through the removable back with brown cane type grill material. He will use an EV electronic crossover. Cabinet is vented.I'll post as I proceed.

  16. Watch a League of their Own sometime with Madonna / Tom Hanks / Geena Davis. When the 12 year old boy tries to boink Geena Davis in the back seat, that was my grandfather's car, I'm supposed to be inheriting it. My uncle was crouched in the back seat during this scene in case the kid lost control or needed coaching. That was actually the kid driving up in it, it wasn't a stunt double or whatever. 1929 Model A Ford that he bought for $50 and used as a potato hauler until he restored it.

  17. Is this actually true? Of course there are other things in the processing that influence sound, but if the above is the parameter I would think the sound would be the same on modern solid state gear.

  20. I sure wish people would stop recommending mis-matched centers solely based on what they think. RC-7, um no, RC-64II, um no, KLF-C7, um no. The correct timbre' matched center to you Chorus II speakers is the Academy. The best choice would obviously be a third Chorus II, but a Forte II and a Quartet would also work.

  24. I honestly have no idea what brand they are. My older brother worked as a pin setter when he was young. The pins had holes drilled in the bottoms of them and after someone bowled they would step on a lever that would raise spikes up into the lanes. They'd put the pins on the spikes to set them. He said you'd have to get out of the way FAST.

  25. THE 90's So up to this point , I enthusiastically used Dad’s KG4’s whenever I could. But never really tested the throttle too much, it was all still within reason. Then my dad got another job we moved to this gorgeous house that from an audiophile’s standpoint that had so many great rooms with great stereo potential. I know you know what I am talking about here. You go look at a house, condo, apartment… whatever suits your needs for shelter… but nothing is ok till you have pre-determined that you have rooms you can work with for your two channel room or where ever you are going to place your home theater. Maybe you make up excuses to your wife about some problem with this house you two are considering buying. But the real story is there wasn’t a good room for your gear. Well this house had great rooms. But,… something truly sad happened in this new gorgeous house that Mom toiled over her decorating. She decided that the “big speakers” were too big. Its kinda funny typing the words “big speakers” and “too big” as the whole impetus of this thread is because of, and will involve more of soon, don’t worry… but yeah CORNWALLS. Don’t get me wrong these aren’t Klipschorns but references using the phrase “gorilla in the room” should duly be changed to gorrillas plural for many models of Klipsch speakers. But, back to the sad moment in time for the “too big” KG4’s. They sadly went to live in solitary in the climate controlled exercise room in the corner covered up. Yep, you read that right, no need to check… they were not even allowed to be hooked up in the exercise room. They just got to stand in the corner with a dunce cap on that ok was just a sheet or something, but they got sentenced to 20 years to life… with potential for furlough and or release… but more on that later. Ok ladies and gentlemen lets have a moment of silence for my Dad’s KG4’s and their banishment of solitude (Yeah so we didn’t use the exercise room too much ok, back off)… Ok silence over because this whole time period for me musically is one of rapid change and decades later I am happy to say its never slowed down. So there was a whole deep Pink Floyd time period that I forgot to mention in junior high. Thank god for cassettes and generosity and trading music. Younins.. think Napster… real younins think torrents, youtube etc. I got really into the beatles, classic rock, Hendrix, radio stations weren’t lame. This all kept happening quickly and evolved into Nirvana, Alternative, NIN, yes rap is still going on here deal with it, beastie boys, NWA, Led Zeppelin. Here are the KG4's by the way

  26. THE LATE 80'S So I’ve always liked electronics and music and to some regard stereos ever since I can remember. But circa 1987 my Dad wanted a set of good speakers. He demo’d several different speakers at the local Hifi shop and eventually came home with a pair of KG4’s. They were placed in a big vaulted room than I now know would be really tough room. Corner placement? Uh sorta, but yeah not really. They were both in the same corner divided by a tv in a cabinet in the actual corner. To put things in perspective I was in my mid teens and my idea of hifi was my boombox, my sony cassette Walkman, and eventually my Sony CD Player Walkman… ohhh, stop the presses! Lets not leave out those questionable headphones that came with these two Walkmen which at them time I was perfectly fine with. Moving of course from those fuzzy foam pads to just the hard plastic headphones with the tiny metal headband that poked directly into your ears. Not even young hipsters of today would rock these. Back to dad’s KG4’s. So he’s just purchased these new KG’s and the salesman as a take home demo cd to use suggested Lionel Richie’s Dancing on the ceiling. The speakers were powered by a decent JVC receiver and I believe the source if memory serves my right was either a Sony or JVC CD player. Oh you thought this was going to be some sexy perhaps mythic portion of the story that involved McIntosh equipment, or some old dynaco tube amp, well it is not. It just involves decent off the shelf equipment and Klipsch KG4’s with odd placement in an awkward room. But here’s the thing… it all sounded amazing. That Lionel Richie Dancing on the Ceiling album… amazing. And that bass. This was the very inception of me becoming an audiophile. Oh and also I started buying my first cd’s because everything sounded great on his system. I also was mowing lawns at the time and would convert my cd's to cassete when needed and made mixes etc because this new system also had a JVC cassette player and a JVC VCR with tracking settings so complicated if repurposed it could probably power the early NASA flights. And some of you may consider this my dark ages of my musical tastes because gangster rap was just becoming a widespread thing and oh that Aerosmith Pump album caused a while Aerosmith craze for me as well.

  27. Just met a CL seller in the home Depot parking lot. He had listed a pair of Forte II for $XXX.00. The price was too low to print. Heck of a nice guy and he knew he was giving a heck of a deal - I think he was happy to hear I was grabbing them to listen to them, and not flip them. Overall I'd say they are in great condition. I have wanted a pair for years. They can wake the neighborhood, or play nice. Very balanced and easy to listen to. Bass is not 'thunderous', but seems fairly accurate. The rest is very Klipsch-ish. You love it or hate it; most that hate it probably haven't heard it with equipment that 'gets along' with it. Right now I'm listening to Brothers in Arms on vinyl. Amp is my DIY Krell KSA50 Klone and my DIY Threshold NS10 Line amp and Phono preamp. The pre sounds great all around, but the KSA Klone seems to have the perfect attitude for the Forte's. Keepers - I'd recommend trying a pair if you trip over a set

  28. I know my hearing is jacked up on high frequency but one has more upper HF than the other does. I've swapped RCA's and also swapped speaker leads around and it stays to the same (left) speaker. I guess when I get home tonight I'll swap the horn/driver from one cabinet to another to see if it follows the driver or if it's a potential crossover issue...which is doubtful. It's only been recapped and new Mills resistors. Guess we'll find out later if I need a new K-63-N a.k.a "needle in a haystack" in finding one, once in a blue moon, or, as John Candy said, "I''d probably stand a better chance of finding a 3 legged ballerina than finding a K-63" or "you've have a better chance of playing pick up sticks with your butt cheeks than finding a K-63". I know the EV drivers work but I like these just fine. You get the idea...

My family, my folks, and my sister's family all live up here in North Texas, however, and I thought it would be a nice change of pace to get out here now that she can travel more freely.

  31. One of the things I enjoy seeing is when a person is in the courtyard looking around marveling at the experience of being there. It's also interesting seeing the folks who may also be into picking pockets when the street performers are doing there thing in front of the palace. I also have seen some strange things going on at that Euro Café. It's a 7 hour difference from CST but even at midnight over there the video is good. There are other webcams I've found but nowhere near as much lowlight definition.

  32. I discovered it weekend before last and was 1) amazed at the picture quality and 2) spent WAY too much time people watching and kept reporting back what I was seeing. I've been in that square many times and never thought for once about "big brother" watching me. That said, it actually is an excellent place to people watch whether in person or a 4K video feed.

  33. OK cool, I guess I wasn't fully comprehending it. I thought you were asking why it didn't sound good at the back. Surrounds are very flexible in positioning...but in reality, they sound much better properly placed. Yours look perfect to me for that room.

  36. The RS-52 are fantastic speakers. They had no problem keeping up with my RF-83 / RC-64 so they will definitely work with the RB-35 / RC-62. I think $250 is a very reasonable price. If they have been listed for awhile, they might sell them even cheaper.

  39. Thanks Mike. Yes it is. I also see those that do tend to be uncharacteristically vocal, too. Perhaps this practice begins to weigh on some over time? However, the physics of the problem doesn't equivocate: the place with the biggest "bang for buck" in terms of potential for sound improvement is always loudspeakers and room acoustics. Chris

  42. Would you stop with the questions and just buy something. Seriously questions are good but I think you may be making yourself(and us) sick with so many. Your room is small and does not "need" tower speakers to fill it with great sound. Many great suggestions have been offered and neither are the "best". I think consensus is that a medium sized bookshelf speaker(RP-160M, RB-61, RB-61II, RB-5, etc.) will sound great with a well blended subwoofer/s. Find something used or a great sale and get them and be happy with your purchase. When time comes for you to move to a larger space, then move those bookshelf speakers to surround duty and get the tower speakers you desire. Sorry, I should have read this before my rant(advice). Great that you have made a decision and a good one at that. I do not. If it will physically fit, then it is not too big. Just dial it down a bit if it becomes a bit overwhelming. Enjoy. Bill

  46. A thought after thinking about this for a little while: Like in military circles where "amateurs talk about weapons and maneuver; experts talk about logistics." In my experience in hi-fi, "amateurs talk about electronics, etc.; experts talk about loudspeakers and room acoustics." Winer also is saying that in his second presentation.

  48. Reading Neil's thread on forum behavior got me thinking about the most memorable threads here over the years. Do you guys have favorites? I have to admit that the NBS thread where Mark was saying there were striking similarities in the NBS and his preamps was entertaining. I also had fun with my UFC thread where forum members battled each other in single elimination bouts. Some of you may not have been there at the time but we had fun. We only had 3 women , Amy, Christy, and meagin so their bouts went quickly. What woman said " if she tries to flee I'll take her in three"? I have also enjoyed build threads that are well documented. I do get a little lost with all the physics and mechanical drawings however. The "Got Tomatoes" thread was fun and went on a while with great photos from dtel and others showing their "crops". Then there was the thread of mine that eventually was locked. The Michael Vick thread. He had just been charged with all the horrific animal abuse and I could not let it go without comment. A forum member, mas, and I got into it and it got heated. Not one of my finer moments. The "oldbuckster" thread and the "Boxx" thread left me in tears. Two of the forums most loved members gone way too soon. So as I approach year 12 here in a couple of more months I have to say it's been entertaining, informative, sad at times, and an opportunity to make some good virtual friends. Here's to more to come.
