  1. Hey y' all ! Its been some time since I've visited here. I have to admit, I did venture away from the Klipsch brand for a bit...only to find my way back with the new Reference Series. The current sale they have gave me the opportunity to get a pair of R-620F's, R-51M's, the R-34C and the R-41SA Atmos modules. Let me tell you, even though these are Klipsch's entry-level, SQ wise they can compete directly (or even surpass in some regards) to other brands mid-level offerings with ease. I've previously owned some of the RP offerings, and this new Reference line blurs the line between the two. They image fantastic, have uber amounts of detail, and no HF fatigue. IMO the only aspects that separate the two lines are build quality, drivers and aesthetics. Kudos to the engineering team for the improvements 👍

  2. Bought these new in 1977 retired them in 1985 when I upgraded to Fortes. I just dragged them out of the back of my closet today after 33 years. Amazing what a little vacuuming and some Old English scratch cover will do.

  4. I know nothing about the inside of an amp but I do know if anyone deserves this it would be Mr. Yocum, one of the nicest people you could ever meet. Here with good friend Steve, two great guys. Thank you for Memorializing him like this, he is smiling.

  5. After some deliberation, and since this amplifier has no headphone output, I ultimately decided that the slight lowering of the noise-floor by using DC heating on the driver tubes wasn't worth the sonic trade-off, and, since this custom power tranny has separate 6.3v windings (one for each channel) I used AC heating with virtual center taps as per usual. This pic shows how I typically leverage the space below the power transformer to mount connection points for power supply wiring/DC rectification (when necessary). In the pic you can also easily see both the "slow-start" MOV and Class X "pop-stop" capacitor as typical on amplifiers using a directly-heated rectifier.

  7. Come on guys, lighten up! He's saying, in effect, you don't have to buy McIntosh electronics in the beginning. Buy Klipsch instead of Blose and pair them with Yamaha instead of Conrad-Johnson. Excellent advice. .

  14. A few weeks ago I urged beginners to heavily skew their spending toward speakers by suggesting that audible differences b/w modern amplifiers that are engineered to be linear (which is pretty much ALL solid-state and any good tube amps these days) will sound pretty much alike. As a followup and to support my point, take a look at what this audiophile club in Guadalajara Spain did a few years back. http://matrixhifi.com/ENG_contenedor_ppec.htm They compared two entire front-end systems that shared the same speakers. Rather than use a switch box (and invoke criticisms of how they reduce audible differences), they simply concealed the whole rig and had two people manually switch cables so eople did not know which front-end they were hearing. Of course, great care was taken to ensure that each system played at same SPL (by matching voltage levels at speaker terminals). To summarize: System A: About $260 today Behringer A500 integrated amplifier (presently avail for $199 from Sweatwater electronics) Cheap Sony DVD/ CD Player (equiv. to a $40 player today) Cheap interconnects: Described as “Standard RCA white/red (15 feet) bought in a 7/11 like store” All placed on a shaky wooden chair System B: I’m guessing $8000 or more at the time. Classe CAP-80 Line Stage YBA 2A Amplifier Wadia 6 CD Transport, VRDS 20 bit DAC MIT Terminator 3 proline XLR interconnects Audican Power Cord CD player placed on an expensive spiked Lovan vibration absorbing (allegedly) table, other components placed on what appears to be sand-filled purpose-built audio component stands. Both Systems were played through ATC SCM 12 passive Studio Monitor speakers connected w/ Tempflex speaker Cables The findings? 38 persons participated in this test 14 chose the "A" system as the best sounding one 10 chose the "B" system as the best sounding one 14 were not able to hear differences or didn't choose any as the best. Of course, this is just two systems and just 38 listeners. ..So devoted subjectivist audiophiles will say this doesn’t prove anything. Also, this wasn’t really a double blind test as those who were switching the cables knew which was playing. However, how many of these devote subjectivist audiophiles would have predicted these results?? So, again, if you’re new to this hobby and you’re budget constrained, give serious thought before devoting a big chunk of your budget to a pricey amplifier, cd player and cables. ..Spend the bulk of your money were it matters most: you’re speakers.

  19. Here is the plate (gut-shot) mounted in the wood base...... as you can see, enough room to work but not much else. ToolShed Amplifiers are only as large as they have to be. I've designed the amplifier to have the coupling capacitors easily accessible should customers feel the need to "roll" those too....

  21. As much wiring is completed as possible prior to building the "turret-board" that is suspended above the front section of the amplifier. This turret board is where all of the circuit connections are made to the devices that are soldered to the tube sockets. I build mine out of 1/8" fiberglass board and individually "swage" each turret using a press I built for this purpose. Doing this rather than buying "tag strips" or pre-made turret boards allows me to design the layout and connection points EXACTLY where I want them with no waste. A pic of the board layout I developed for Scott's amp (and all Euphoria 2a3's coming up) will be attached to the next post...... this one is yelling at me about max file size... As I sit here typing, I'm amazed at the SQ of this amplifier.... another bonus, although I designed this amplifier to maximize the sound quality of the 2a3 output tube (my favorite operating points using a 5K primary OT), by dropping in a 5R4GY rectifier, this amp is perfectly safe for use with the "45" output tube. It sounds glorious on this last day of burn-in driving my Cornwall 3's with a very, very old pair of engraved-base Philco 45's.

  22. I think that using the word "stage" in an ad, with a picture, reveal's more about which kind of stage, than one particular stage, such as one with low lighting, alcohol, and dust. I wonder how many time's someone tried to get their guitar jack in that small hole in the back....

  25. Yep! As an adolescent I had a mono single Altec-Lansing 15" studio monitor to listen to, and as an enterprising kid good at soldering and hooking up electronics I ran a speaker jack out of my 120VAC clock radio and plugged my 15" Altec-Lansing into it and it sounded fantastic!!! Speakers are the instrument that transmits the actual sound to your ears. Very important link! John Kuthe...

  29. Got back home last night in time to watch football, had a good time. A few friends helped Kevin install some surrounds and a center channel, it sounds good. The surrounds and center are 362's which are the same size as the 396, he used these because the mains are Khorns. He had to order heavy brackets to hang them being there about 75 pounds, luckily there is a 6" x 12" beam that runs the length of the living room. There are about 12 7" lag bolts holding each bracket, it's a long way to fall if it were to fall, it would kill someone. We had to use a double scaffolding to reach where they went. The speakers and brackets were black and had to be painted to match the ceiling and it rained taking 2 days to dry so we could wrestle them up there. Halfway through drying we had to bring them inside by the fireplace to finish the drying, it was looking like they were not going to dry.

  33. The 3070 does not have balanced preouts so your only choice is RCA. If you want to use the Emo's balanced inputs, you will have to get an RCA to balanced cable or converter. Truthfully I would not fool with all that and just use RCAs. Welcome to the forum. Bill

  39. Another worn out LP replacement done years ago when my new Silverado had a cd player in it. Forte IIIs were made for recordings like this! Saw `em twice this tour, in Charlotte they did a freakin' medly for the whole d*mn show. Then down at the Omni they played a lot longer, did practically the whole new record and a lot off of Fragile and earlier, that made up entirely for the rip-off they did here, but the trip down to Atl. and overnight there was expensive at the big round hotel!

  40. Took the time to read the round cup this time. So yes looks like I was wrong. As mentioned by my use of them, could not tell any difference in the odd pair I had. Do not think any marketing ploy was used myself. It is what it is. As for the Adcom, just will say I would, just do not overdrive them, of course. That Marantz should match well...
