  1. I got a PA5 just out of curiosity. For the last 3 years I've been running a pair of Papworth Audio Technology M100 monoblocks (4x KT90s per side for circa 100-120W) an amplifier designed by Tim de Paravacini which I first heard in the '90s loved, always wanted and I didn't really plan on changing them. A couple of weeks of back and forth listening on everything from Oscar Peterson to Nirvana via Streisand and Public Enemy and I had to get honest with myself. The M100s hit eBay and were gone in two days. The Topping grips the bass of the Forte IIIs tighter, delivering more texture and making them sound slightly deeper. Voices hang in discrete space, of which there suddenly seems to be more about. Some instruments which seemed locked to one speaker on a recording now seem to hover just free of the cabinet. Cymbals sound like they've been polished to a bright metallic sheen, but there's no spitiness or hardness. The background is jet black silence. There is simply no noise at all at any volume. I was about to say something about the PA5 limits, but given my distance of 13ft to the Fortes a quick calculation suggests near 100dB peaks at the MLP are consuming all of about 40W. Of course, I have immediately placed an order for another one so I can bi-amp each speaker... Russ

  2. @mustang_flht Really the point was just to see if new caps fixed the issue without dropping $100, which it did. It seems that people will endlessly debate capacitors around here, so instead of worrying about all that, I just got something that was a) good enough, and b) available, to get the speakers functioning to the point where I could see if I wanted to keep them. Unfortunately, the problem I have now is that when I switch from the cornwalls to the RF5s, (which I've had and loved for a while), the sudden change makes them sound thin and harsh, as if they're missing an entire spectrum of sounds. Seems the 3 way design is superior (probably no surprise there). My issue right now is the cornwall lows seem to have some reverberation to them unlike the RF5 which sound much tighter to me. And they're monsters. Honestly way too big for my space. My current plan is to sell the cornwalls and wait for a deal on a smaller heritage speaker.

  4. Good evening / morning friends! Well, the Longfellow Music Hall is beginning to be thinned out to just one audio system. BIG changes here in the formal livingroom where there has NEVER in the 15 years in this home been anything more then a Bose Wave System. But, I moved the Klipsch RP280F towers up to the second floor, and also the Bang and Olufsen Beomaster 6500 system as well and the B.I.C. table too. I am enjoying music on the second floor like we've never had before! Here is a vibe photo from this afternoon with amber up lighting on the speakers.

  7. Thank you Paul, yes, the amber lighting really sets them off for sure. I had two Cambridge Audio phono stages in storage and had to put one in service for this B&O system. I had forgotten that the matching B&O turntable has the phono stage BUILT IN ! Of course, I would love to have the TT that came with this system, but they are impossible to find here in the states in BLACK! Over the pond, they are around in WHITE and of course, wired for 240v along with being outrageously expensive to purchase and ship to my home! So, the B.I.C. will do for now.🍷

  11. I appreciate your insight after reading your concerns I went back and got caught up on all the forum threads over 100 pages now seems you're not the only one concerned with the safety aspect-- that ended up being the deciding factor for me lack of safety and quality control looks like they cheaped out to the max when moving production to CA I emailed Jim Clark and asked for a refund even offered to pay return shipping and a restocking fee if necessary thanks.

  12. That's an awesome amp for home use. The fact that it has RCA inputs and regular speaker output posts makes it so you don't have to mess around with XLR converters, Speakon connectors, etc. Plus built-in DSP!

  16. I have an old guitar I picked up several years ago that no one seems to know much about. Perhaps one of you will know something. One story I found while doing internet research is that this was an early demo guitar made by a Japanese manufacturer to show American guitar companies that they were capable of building a good product. The thing is built like a tank and plays and sounds really nice. It's just a little oddly shaped and sized.

  20. I am using the Parasound Hint integrated with my Heresy IVs and have been very happy. This Class A/B amp sounds amazing. It has a good quality MM/MC pre-amp. Admittedly, I am using it in a 2.1 setup, not as part of a home theater; but as you have seen it has the bypass for that purpose. Several online sites, music direct for example, have return policies so that you could audition it in your room. Good luck.

  21. Defects are one possible 'fault' mode, whatever defect in the film will be cleared during first use. Those small defect areas are more or less a short, this short current vaporizes the metal film causing a void and clearing the short. Other fault modes include over voltage conditions usually from short duration transients. This high potential over voltage causes a corona discharge effect or 'arc' like we discussed before, this arc current will vaporize the metal film creating a void again clearing the problem area. Over current and heat can also damage the capacitor. Every single time there is a fault and the metal film vaporizes making a void and clearing the problem area it effectively continues to reduce the surface area which subsequently lowers the capacitance/reactance which mathematically directly correlates to an increase in ESR. It makes sense if you think about it, you are effectively slowly reducing the overall surface area which directly relates to the amount of capacitance/reactance. From what I gathered the vast majority of faults over the lifetime of a capacitor is from over voltage transients. Small defects in the dielectric are present from manufacturing mostly and clear when used, it will rarely encounter that issue again in it's service life.

  24. $1100 For sale my 299c with case, this is the last of my downsizing. completely redone. The following description is from the gentleman that did the work I've gone through and completely recapped the set with Hayseed Hamfest electrolytic cap cans, Cornell Dubilier orange drop film caps, & Vishay film caps underneath. Ive added a thermistor before the on/off/volume switch to prevent arcing in said switch. The thermistor will also ensure the amp has an easy slow startup when it's cold and it helps bring modern line voltage down from 125v closer to 117v like it used to be back in the 60s! The full wave selenium rectifier for the bias circuitry has been replaced with a modern day 3A/1000v silicon rectifier bridge and I've added new ac bypass caps, all voltages are spot on! All the controls have been cleaned, it has 4 matched NOS Telefunken 12AX7's, 4 matched very strong near NOS testing Scott(Sylvania) 7591 outputs, 2 NOS 6GH8 phase inverters(low noise 6U8), and a NOS mullard 5AR4 rectifier so this thing is ready for several years to come. only minor problem is with the fuse holder, once set works perfect. $1100

  25. Hi @captainbeefheart I am French, so I hope to explain my point of view well. We agree and yes that's exactly it, the 2.2µF will cut lower and it is possible that the listener hears more of the treble towards the crossover zone, towards 4 or 5khz, by accumulating this at the middle horn; the listener may find his speaker more "spicy" Yes, 2.2µF is almost identical to 2µF and the difference must be marginal, I just wanted to explain how to easily make a capacitor at the exact and theoretical value with 1.8µF + 0.22µf = 2µF It is good for you 👍

  28. I hear you, he seems to have a very good attitude about the whole thing and he still likes the amplifier which is all that matters. I am sure he understands he doesn't require the power so the amp's deficiency in power isn't effecting him. I tried telling him that since he likes it and wants to keep it to at least bring it up to safety standards but he isn't concerned. I would just hate to see anyone get hurt, the safety is more concerning for me than the performance of the amplifier.

  33. Heresy IVs are configured for bi-WIRING, not bi-amping. That means 2 pair of wires from one amp channel to each speaker. A dubious benefit if your wires are large enough. Bi-amping, actually for a Heresy, tri-amping, should bypass any passive x-over should be bypassed (short of a capacitor protecting the horn drivers) and then the electronic crossover can contour the driver's response, minimize the overlap between drivers and time align the drivers. This has a verifiable benefit.

  34. they are using 15 watts Edcor output transformers ,the output stage is way under-biased , no wonder the Tubes last , they are anything but warm , you want to increase bias , the transformers cant handle the quiescent current , no wonder the amp is so light it's a 15 wpc amp sold as a 75wpc - I dont understand how they can test the amp at the rated specs , and in order to safely reach the advertised 75wpc , you would need 30 watt output transformers as a minimum ,plus as you said a decent power transformer , and + the added bias , or else , people are gonna damage 15 watts transformers prematurely and even risk a fire before the warranty is expired - anyway you look at it , these amps will not last unless they are babied with very low usage -

  37. These were a bare bones budget speaker offered at discount prices it seems hard for me to believe that they would reengineer the cabinets between these two models while keeping the same exact dimensions and cut-outs. My guess is that the listed weight is probably wrong in one of the two speakers from what I can see.

  39. The k-79 in the Chorus line has the same size magnet as the k-75 but the Chief pointed out recently that there is a difference in the gap size to increase the sensitivity in the k-79 so all three tweeter magnets are different but the diaphragms and horns are the same.

  41. Took another look at your post here , lots of good comment , I’ve had the Khorns since 1986 and I always kringed at the thought of removing any low bass from the big Klipschorn , and then try like hell to replace what was removed with something else that would be better .

  42. Tweeked the sub a bit the other evening w/the encouragement of @ClaudeJ1. I'm sure he's laffin at me right now. lol I'm surviving but going a bit off task for today. I've been sorting lp's. Then it happened. Yup, kept seeing all this stuff I liked but haven't really heard in a while. Yea, you been there! THIS is CRAZY nuts now in here! 😂 Russ Ballard? Miami Vice would have been an epic fail w/out his work so there's that! Found a lil Jeff Beck promo that sounded just killer! Great LP! Released in 1969 by EC, Ric Grech, Steve Winwood and Ginger Baker? Yup, their only studio lp which is showing the US cover. I'm lost in here sports fans! 😂 ALL your fault @ClaudeJ1 😂 Gonna be slippin this one in next so heading to the couch a happy boy! Sure I'm gonna bump it up just a bit more 😂 Just think I could have gained all kinds of points with separate posts. hahaha pfffffft! Just easier for ya to scroll on down this way!

  45. Funny how the X always thinks they're at no fault in it at all. Like it doesn't take two to tango or most anything else a couple does together. Unsaid expectations and changing schedules can & did wreck havoc in my case. & like the above two lines, if it isn't $ ? It's lack of communication. Hindsight makes me think those are the lowest common denominators. Not professing expertise If I was I'd be sittin' pretty right now!

  46. They're good at spoofing numbers these days. A good rule of thumb is if you don't know the number, let it go to message. If they really want to talk to you they will leave one. You will also know who they are and whether you know them or not, or if it is a scam.

  48. Because then he wouldn't have been able to tell you he enjoyed the AHB2 more because he wouldn't have been able to discern the two amps. I'm entirely convinced that had he truly removed his own bias from the equation (the only way you can, blind), then he would have surprised himself even further. These amps measure so close to each other there's no way anyone could reliably discern them blindly. You'd never convince me otherwise. I've personally experienced a blind test and let me tell you, everything I thought I knew went out the window as soon as I couldn't see which shiny device was creating sound. Expectation bias is a powerful thing and it WILL affect the way you hear gear.
