  1. String sound with Klipsch: It's hard to know what the variables are, so I'll just describe our set-up and the result. I played in 5 orchestras and ate lunch in front of one in rehearsal, often (average position, 10th row). Yes, I frequently stopped chewing to listen more carefully. Through our Klipschorns and Belle Klipsch center, with Audyssey Flat EQ, it seems to depend on the recording. Our models of these speakers are stock and use the K33E woofers, K55X mid drivers, K401 mid horns, and K77F Tweeters flush mounted on the baffle board. The room is treated; has wall to wall carpet, 5 seat couch, absorbers, diffusors , bookshelves and diffusing pottery and artifacts. About 30% of strings seem fine, the rest, less so. My Paganini collection is wonderful. Some Yo-Yo Ma is terrific, one collection is lacking in treble, of all things. Most other string recordings (40%?) are passable; always chrystal clear, highly detailed in a way, but, as you say, lacking in the wood sound, and a certain beauty in the rosin facilitated friction. (Note: virtually all brass and percussion are nearly perfect). About 30% are lacking: harsh, seem too closely mic'd. More often a problem on older CDs than on other media. Massed strings are now good, with room treatment and Audyssey. It took me decades to get this right, failing with ADC, EV, Ampex, JBL, and Klipsch speakers. A friend and I had seen Ben-Hur (1959) in 70mm six track magnetic sound at 22.5 ips. The Prelude, played before the curtains opened had what seemed to me to have a perfect massed string sound. I later found out the studio had EQ'd the Prelude for transmission through the curtains (even though this was a re-release -- those were the days!). I didn't know what to call the fricative sound of the many string players; my friend said, "I thought that was a scraping sound that only high school orchestras made." He had rarely heard a live orchestra up close, so I told him I had heard it many times, but, true, it was rarely captured on a recording. I played the Prelude at home (when it finally came out on Rhino-- the "soundtrack" Lp, which never called itself "soundtrack," but had the big stone letters, turned out to be a fake). So, I used the VHS, then the Rhino album, then the DVD, then the Blu-ray of the real soundtrack, and only recently reproduced the massed strings properly. Audyssey Flat may have made the difference, and other recordings of massed strings now sound good, as well.

  9. Looking at your system profile, I'd say the culprit isn't there. I do agree with @YK Thom , placement is crucial. Although firing horns directly at your listening position can make some recordings more present and exciting, poor recordings can be fatiguing. I have found that listening off axis to horns gives a more natural presentation of instruments and can improve the body and fullness of the sound. I have my LS IIs only slightly toed in and sit about 12 ft. away from the plane of the speakers. I'm not sure about your placement, but it's something you can try if you haven't already.

  14. Thanks for asking, I was intending on reporting back. Bought the car on Saturday. Had a trailer behind wifes car so she wanted me to drive the trailer home. Which means, she drove it the 40 miles home.... we cleaned it up a bit Saturday/Sunday and I didn't drive it. I didn't drive it until yesterday (Wednesday) so the car sat for roughly five days before I got to drive it. (nice). Drove it yesterday and today for real, (not around the block at the prior owners house) When I was cleaning it out, it was cold outside so I turned heater on....engine idling and I'm not driving at all. Getting acclimated to the controls & things.... I was there for roughly an hour. Wednesday, I go to leave for work and the MPG indicator said 14 (because I was sitting idle). By the time I drove the 40 miles to location and home, the 14 had raised to about 35. Today, I went to same location again and by the time I did a round trip, it was just on the cusp of hitting 38 mpg. Tomorrow, I'm going roughly 70 miles to location.... will see what happens. After getting acclimated a bit to this car, I think I am going to like the technology behind it. Uses battery for putting around. Need more juice, engine kicks in and can power battery AND offer some engine power to front wheels. Go over (something like 70 I think???) and you are more on engine than battery so your MPG's might drip down to mid 30's or something like that. (presuming I read things correctly) Today, was on entrance ramp to highway. For first time, decided to lean into it a bit and I must say, I am impressed. Just a constant hard acceleration. Car has some "charging paddles", not sure of name. But you can be going down a hill and there is no engine braking. You can operate the paddle and it will go into regenerative circuit and that offers "engine" braking. You can go into 1-3 levels as I understand, the higher the level, the more it regenerates AND similar to maybe downshifting to engine brake harder. Watching some of the gauges and gizmos, you can see the flow of power as it comes FROM the battery OR, let off gas and it goes TO the battery. I can see where it might take some changing of driving habits to maximize the cars MPG potential. When I/we got our first DVD recorder for the TV, it was an overnight appreciation for what it did. Driving this car is very similar. You (me) want to try to maximize its potential so I'm much more aware of mashing the throttle, mashing the brakes, coasting down long hills.....coasting down long hills while using the battery charger paddles to maximize the charge. I'm sure once I get fully acclimated to this, it will be mundane. As it is, it's a new toy and very different than the standard Camry I had that was a simple 4 cylinder gas engine. So far, I'd say it's a hit. (and certainly more fun to drive than the Camry that has 280,000 miles on it)

  19. My brother surprised me tonight. Called and then picked up some spicy food for me! So glad I have some Pepcid here. Sure you pepper-heads would recognize the seeds in the red salsa. The green is similar to the Herdez Hot Guacamole salsa except it is more hot also. No beef in the enchiladas, but I've got fresh tamales in the fridge for tomorrow along with the really good different to me guac! yep nothing but habs in the red stuff! Chunkiest guacamole I have ever had, great stuff! Have you ever had frijoles that had cocoa powder in them? yuk

  23. I guess it depends on whether you want to stay with solid state or try tubes with them. On the tube side, I would highly recommend a RESTORED Fisher 500C, or a RESTORED Scott integrated like an LK-72 or 299B/C. They all sound great with H3s.

  24. Will this build work if I flip the speakers and have it stand up vertically (taller) rather than horizontally (on its side) like what OP is doing now? This is due to limited space Also will opting for a larger box to fit in the front part help in the bass department?

  27. @jcn3 Thanks for the reply. That is interesting. I will try that. I have bass traps on my front wall currently. I guess I can move those to back (my back) wall. Did you at all try diffusers between the speakers?
    1 point
  28. i found that with the cornwalls in the corners, bass traps weren't helpful and sounded better with them removed. putting them in the corners also reduces the effect of first reflections (e.g. off the left wall for the left speaker). i thought that absorption on the sidewalls helped, but wasn't as significant as with "normal" speakers placed further out into the room.

  31. I have a theory about this, it has more to do with placement and presentation. PWK himself was very much a classical music listener and of course stringed instruments are a key component of the sound. I have personally found that Klipsch speakers are quite accurate with the overall sound of strings, but what can be missing is the presentation. Stringed instruments of this type played live are generally not running through a sound reinforcement system - the sound is omni directional. Klipsch like most speakers are directional, so your placement in a room makes a big difference. I have been using Ohms for several years as my front mains and find them generally superior for this type of music. Superior in presentation as they radiate more in the manner of the live instrument, not overall tonal or detail accuracy.Getting a wider sound stage with your Klipsch will eliminate some of the directionality. Having the horns straighter rather than toed in made a difference for me in my listening room. As I mentioned just a theory.

  37. You'll get it fixed. πŸ˜‰ I've had really good results driving my subs with any old Carver or Adcom amps bridged to mono. I have an '01 Sunfire True Subwoofer Signature that has a blown amp that nobody I've taken it to seems to be able to (or wants to) fix that I've driven with an A-500X, an M-1.5t, a PM-350, an Adcom GFA-555 (all bridged) and a GFA-565 dual mono. They all drive it pretty well, the A-500X being the current workhorse. I also have an Outlaw 770 that won't drive it, so there's that 🀣 It's plenty loud for home-theatre with any of those, so for music and what you're looking for I'd imagine you could drive it with anything comparable. Have fun shopping!! Or better yet . . . . succeed!!

  39. With all of the listening i have done in the last few days, I think the woofer needs to be louder. I still believe a woofer replacement is in order. I do believe the Kappalite 3015LF is a great woofer, but as Claude mentioned, its a great woofer at very high volumes. The highs and mids sound almost perfect to my ear. Music material makes a difference as well. You need good recordings.

  42. This all changed when Stevens made a series of woofers to pauls specs,,,..and Paul didn't have apply the chem, to lowerFe... Now Eminence hasthe code,,,,,,, I don't think EV would have done that ,making that crude cut...,,, Some one passed a lousey woofer on to you...
    1 point
  43. No it was not orange,,, But Paul was very careful not to get it on the cone ,,But on the outer surround,,, So it would not migrate further down the cone....Yes the wedges were just above and below the slot,,,....... GEORGE ASHWORTH had a special bass bin made for him by Paul,,,,to make fast exchanges of woofers in the bass unit,,,
    1 point
  44. In some technical letters to ashworth,,,, A special chemical was applied to the EV 15wk outer surround to lower free air resonance...Paul applied this himself,,, I don't know if this after all these years had dried out... Paul was trying to lower free air resonance to just below 30 hz,,,I don't no wicth serial number were on the units,,,Paul new about the problems in trying something smaller than 3x13 slot,,, ASHWORTH had several mounting boards in his position 6x13 ,,3x13 ,, 2 1/2 x13,,and one at 2x13...,,, After Georges death...I was allowed to recover some of these boards,, I have them in my basement,, Plus all 155 tech letters from Paul to George... I sent copies to Jim Hunter... I haven't read them in many years,,, The additional wedges in the bass bin are a mystery to me,,, I don't remember who ,,cant remember his name also found these wedges in the bass bin and was able to remove them..
