  1. Just to close the happy-ending on this purchase…here is a video of these speakers now setup in my room. I may need to raise my HT screen. BTW - it was almost comical with me (65) and Glynn (70+) loading these into my rental cargo van. The things we do. Last post - I promise:).

  2. Hey @dirtmudd A local on either TV or radio was saying we would get 8 to 12 in of snow. Until this morning my phone app that uses apples weather kit was saying 3 in plus less than a 1/8 of an inch of ice. I'm sure that you got your snow living where you live dude! I talked to @Dave1291 recently and he must have put a mojo on me over the phone. I woke up at 1:00 a.m. this morning after going to bed at 10:30 last night. Well at 2:30 I got outta my bed... (yaaa not the back of the RDX!) and made coffee and started some painting again. I have not seen anything but a couple of flurries, mostly rain so the weather man gets it wrong again. You never know though. That's fine with me. I might not have to wait until after lunch to go to the hardware store. My fumbling fingers dropped a machine screw that held one of three electrical lines from the 220 into my dryer. Don't have anything with me that will suffice and messing with electricity it's all or nothing. So so I've got to get it right!

  4. 1957 Ampex console first stereo console. This is a good one. I've had it for years and taken many stabs at restoration. I finally made some progress. The amps, preamp, and tuner are now functionally. I also added some bluetooth. The record changer is going to be swapped and the RTR need serious help. The belts fell out the motor needs some work. All that being said I have a tuner and bluetooth for now. The guts all spread out so we can find issues more easily. Nice little JBL 8" full rangers.

  5. I don't believe in this "pairing an amp with speakers" stuff. Manufacturers can't afford to risk such narrow pairings between their components and other components. They'd lose significant market share and money. Buy the receiver and I expect it will be fine.

  6. I wouldn't put too much credence in one bad review by one individual. Many sing the praises of Marantz and Klipsch. Myself included.

  7. Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions, for those wondering I ended going with this: CAYIN MT-12N EL84EH Integrated Tube Amp I read good things about Cayin, and at $500 I can decide if I like the tube sound or not. I have my Wiim Pro Plus w DAC and remote going into one channel, Phono pre into another, so I think I'll be all set.

  9. FWIW I love tube amps and prefer their sound. If you are new to the hobby don't go down the tube rabbit hole to start off. It can get expensive quickly and if you don't upgrade the preamp tubes in an integrated tube amp you won't get very good sound anyways. At least not near the potential for sound quality that some good NOS tubes can provide. Get a solid state quality 2 channel dedicated integrated amp. Congrats on your Heresy. They are much more than the entry level of the Heritage line of speakers. They provide truly great audiophile sound. Never under-estimate them based on their smaller stature.

  17. Ah, the talk of snow. Though we had a white Christmas, it didn't stick around for long. Had a slight dusting last night, and they are calling for 3-5 inches over the next few days. I figured I'd get the snow blower out today in the event that forecast is accurate. However, once I get the snow blower out, I'd be surprised if we get 2-3 inches. Breakfast was a Belgian waffle and coffee (sorry, no pictures of the waffle). Sitting here enjoying coffee and listening to the lovely Ms. Fitzgerald. After this I guess I'll put away all the Christmas gifts then head to the shed for the snow blower.

  18. My experience has been very much the opposite of this post and I consider this terrible advice. Pairing the right amp to your speakers is the most important pairing you can make in an audiophile setup. I've heard the same amp I'm listening to right now that sounds great with my Fortes sound dreadful with another pair of speakers that I have sitting in the same room. My ears have heard many times what you "don't believe".

  20. I have a Marantz nr1200 and have used it with my KLF20s and Cornwall IVs before. Maybe aim one of those tin eared people but I think it sounded good with both. Definitely better than my Onkyo 9050 on the KLFs. I also owned a Marantz 40n for awhile and didn’t think it was worth 5 times the cost. I would however like to try a Yamaha as1200 someday.

  26. Um, not since the Bonehead Class in October and those threads. Roy is doing another Bonehead Class in March as part of the Birthday Bash, and the subwoofers and some other Heritage “advancements” are being discussed as his topics. I expect another round of updates, refinements and announcements at that time. Travis

  27. Just yesterday I received these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002WLB0RW?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1 I have to agree it does make a positive sound difference, I also have heavy floor to 10 ft ceiling drapes behind my La Scala's I just leaned them up against the wall behind each shoulder - I am about 10 ft away from La Scala's

  29. If that's the case maybe THAT'S what should be on the first post of this thread instead of what's there? This is a current stickied thread dealing with a problem Klipsch acknowledged on the first post they had. Again, I have to think YOU could have the answer to this guy's question. @Erik WithaK take a shot and ask your question here. 🤔

  30. I appreciate you taking the time in all of this. Ive found a Denon AVR-X2700H locally that is new in the box for $300. This should be plenty for what I am trying to accomplish right? I've also found a pair of RP-500SA's locally but they are not the II's. Did the originals not meet the standard and hence the second generation of them? I'm still looking at center speakers and will at least put that next on my list if something locally comes up.

  32. This is a basic simulation of the LS bass horn in Hornresp. The K33 is in light gray and I’ve plotted the exact same horn in black but substituted the driver specs for those of the Eminence Kappa 15C. as you can see, both drivers show a peak in the 150Hz region with the 15C showing less of a drop in output. You will also note that the 15C gives up a little on the low end to the K33. Even if the sidewalls aren’t resonating(much) there is still going to be that peak in the response which will really honk if given the right(wrong) source material. This peak in the 150Hz region is well documented, and even showed up in the response curves from the stereophile review of the AL-5. Before anybody has a chance to try to pretend that I’m making this up, and that the stereophile measurements aren’t valid(I’m looking at you @OO1 ), I would like to remind you that Roy himself posted the following EQ settings for use with the LS bass section when using an active DSP crossover. 87hz, Q:3.5, +5dB 148Hz, Q:8, -7dB 380Hz, Q:5.5, +2dB I think it’s hard to realize what you are missing until you have a chance to hear the LS bass without that peak.

  34. To reach their specs, especially the low end, they need to be in close vicinity of a corner. The sealed backs give you some flexibility in terms of how you toe them in as they don’t need to be sealed into the corner like the older ones do, but they need to be in a corner to meet the specs.

  36. My Super MWM's are 16' center to center and most choose to listen at around 12' to 14' away. Amazing fidelity and presence you can never have with direct radiator speakers. Of course they sound good out in an open field too from 90' or more away. Big horns done right just flat out beat everything else.

  37. We see what we want to see, we see things as we are. That said, every amp I've used over 40 years has sounded different. I recently reset my stereo system to work my way up from the bottom. I thought my midfi solid state amp was fine until I went back and tested my esoteric tube amp. Then it was "Why have I been depriving myself ?" I first noticed this back in the 80s when I heard a Fisher tube receiver, it was astounding the difference from a midfi solid state receiver. So I believe it is most likely amps will certainly sound different from each other. Maybe very high quality solid state amps may sound similar, but I'll never know.

  38. I have never listened to two amps that I thought sounded the same. Never. And I have owned about 35 amps since the early 90s. Any time I have compared one to another there have been differences.

  39. Ooooo Sweeet sometimes just nekked plywood looks good.
    1 point
  40. The answer is yes of course speaker cabinets can be constructed of plywood. The considerations for you to ponder are cost, ease of construction, durability and rigidity. Cost: Self explanatory, sometimes surplus plywood is available. Ease of construction: I hate the itching from cutting MDF but it is a good compromise. Durability: MDF does not do very well with moisture and if dampness is a possibility then plywood might be a better solution. Rigidity: This is an area where science gets blurred by all the basement artists. You need rigidity to prevent the cabinet sides from acting as a diaphragm and to move the resonant frequency of those panels up as high as possible. While mass is commonly associated with rigidity mass itself is not desirable. Mass can store energy and cause a blurring of the sound. I have constructed panels out of a relatively light material then braced the inside with a "egg-crate" made of Masonite strips on edge and held with a rubber based glue that remains tough and never fully hardens (good quality construction adhesive). The resulting panel is very rigid without much mass and without robbing interior cabinet volume. Now speaking of cabinet volume be sure you engineer your box to the T&S parameters of the driver. If you have trouble with this there are plenty of knowledgeable folks on this forum to help. Listen to experience, I measure the T&S parameters myself and find it common that the results of testing (either by added mass of known volume methods) will vary from the manufacturers advertised parameters by as much as 30% on quality drivers. The experience of others will help. You mention that you'd like to build the box a little deeper, changing the depth even a little will dramatically change box volume. Good Luck and enjoy!

  41. By the way did you all know that there was an original member of PF named Sidney (maybe Sydney)? I've always thought of Roger Waters as the artist and the other three as his magic instrument. While PF without Roger is good to me it lacks the creativity of the master artist and Rogers work without them is interesting but lacks the magic in performance. BTW Syd Barrett's name is not Sydney, Syd is just a nickname his dad tagged him with.
