  1. Not crazy about Coors but it's better than a Coke, and no never been.Well Super DAD how did the kiddies like mouseland, and you and the better half also ? (besides of being separated from your money, got to expect that) And you know if we don't get a couple pics (when your ready) it was all just made up ! Super DAD Tired. I don't have a lot of phone camera pics. As I purchased the memory maker. Which sends all the pics taken on rides, along with professional pics to my account for downloading. Really cool, other then that it was a great time. Though 6 days at mouse land is way too much. Now that I feel I have my fill of all the parks. If I return to Florida, there just may only a day set aside for the magic kingdom. If the kiddies aren't with us or old enough to be on their own. I wouldn't mind trying that wine and beer expo at Epcot. I feel there is more to do at Florida, so I would like to return someday.

  2. My 2nd grade grand-daughter is taking a 'music appreciation' class at school. An "old guy" with a silver pony-tail plays MIDI-ish music for them, and then asks questions. My daughter asked my grand-daughter what kind of music he plays for them. She replied, "Pop music." "Oh," said my daughter, "popular music, like on the radio." "No," said the grand-daughter, "Pop music, like Pop plays." ('Pop' is my grandchild pseudonym) "You know, music with HIGHS and LOWS."

  5. Yes Tower of Power's 1973 hit, "What is Hip" has come full circle and now it is our time again. That's correct. Got dragged off to the mall last weekend. Cruisin along past some ultra trendy corporate version of hipsterism called Urban Outfitters. No camping gear, just cheezy crap household goods for the home of the ubber trendy cave dwellers. Not even five feet inside the main entrance is probably fifty linear feet of, can you believe this, records! In flip style racks! Yes indeed. Wax, lps or vinyls as they are now known. Not a bad selection. Stuff like the Clash, a mixed mixture of classic rock, and some fairly good indy music tunes. Even a audiophile pressing or two. Maybe as much as 100 or 200 titles. By far the oldest person there, I sauntered over, gently nudging the slacker puppies out of my way, and proceeded to show them how to flip through a stack. You could tell I'd made an impression, the background buzz got quiet for a moment, and when I finished up, they quickly turned away, to wrapped up in their "cool" to approach a seasoned vet of the wax wars. Who knows, maybe I'll stop back there some day. Take a coupe of them under my wing. Eventually I'll ask them if they ever heard tell of something called horns.

Things are winding down a tad, they are sending some of the first responders home at this time. Fire still going here and there, my closest shooting area is toasted, no biggie, can wait till i move to Nevada.

  9. From my profile: I listen to CDs, SACDs (mostly multi-channel SACDs), DVD-As, and Blu-Ray music discs, about in order here in terms of frequency. My CDs and DVD-As are ripped to FLAC (lossless) and played back over HDMI to my preamp's DACs (Burr-Brown). From there into the active crossovers (one for the Jubs, one for the center Belle, and directly to the surround Cornwalls). My FLAC library is on foobar2000, where I've taken the time to analyze all tracks using the Dynamic Range Meter plugin, which tells me crest factor for each track, and ReplayGain, which tells me average loudness for each track. I often sort on DR ratings (highest first) for the 13,000+ tracks that I've ripped to FLAC, and play the highest DR tracks, then switch to the lowest DR tracks for grins (don't ask--it's awful). I often sort by genre first and DR second so that I can pick my mood of music. All this is displayed on my fairly large flat screen TV using foobar2000 so that everyone gets to see all information about each track being played. Everyone that reads this display asks the question, "what does all the columns of numbers on the right side of the screen mean?". When I explain it to them, they typically are mesmerized by the DR ratings and how the music sounds. It's a really entertaining "party trick".

  11. Good morning! It's 12 degrees warmer today and the ground is still again this morning although last evening we had another 5.0. Baby boy number two is due in the next 8-9 days so the volume is going to go up in my house by about one KHorn. (That's a scientific measurement right?). Coffee's in hand this morning - all is well.

  14. Exactly my thoughts. The bigger and better sound far outweighs any apparent timbre mis-match. My rc62ii between f30s was great and I guarantee it sounded better than the best synergy center. My rc64ii between rf82iis is the next level and similarly it bests the rc62ii which is 'the perfect match'. Center channel is so important and imho if it is the better sounding speaker in the system that is not a bad thing.

  15. There are 2 different things being proposed here. Isolatiopn vs. coupling and dampening. Spikes are supposed to "isolate" the equipment from vibrations. Seems like pure BS to me. Spikes started out as a way to couple speakers to the floor when you have carpet, and in that case they do work very well. Then the Audiofools thought that spikes looked nifty and started using them for "isolating" equipment on wood, metal and glass shelves. Rubber feet will couple equipment to a shelf, and dampen vibrations to a certain degree. They are very cheap and very effective if you don't want your equipment to slide around (especially on glass) and dampen a little (if that even does much of anything). One inexpensive system that works very well is the sprung feet and heavy chasis on a Technics SL1200. You can pound your fist on a table next to the TT and it will do a good job of dampening the vibrations (and the tonearm will not skip unless you get crazy - I have never tried).

  16. So i spent a wonderful eight hours in traffic school. Sitting next to this 24 year old girl all day. at the end of the class, as we’re waiting for our paperwork to get signed, she asks me, “where do you get your style?” Honestly, i don’t recall what my response was; but, she then said, “I like it and most old guys…ummm, i mean guys older than me…” I stopped her and said that she’d already blown it.

  19. I have not heard the SW-115 nor the PB2000 so my "opinion" is more speculation. If you are sticking to ported subs and you currently like your SW-115, why not just get another one? On the other hand, SVS subs are wonderful and a pair of SB-2000's would offer a more musical presentation over twin PB2000's. I am not discounting the PB2000 because that pair for $1000.00 is a good deal for well regarded subs. I am blown away by my SVS SB13 Plus(95% same as SB13 Ultra), and would have no problem suggesting a single SB13 Ultra if that is all that in the budget. On the other hand, a single PB12 Plus or a PB13 Ultra are very versatile subs(more $$$ though) with the ability to run them in different tuning modes, including sealed. Bill

  23. I've been asking myself over the last month or two, is Analog source material dead? I have a fairly sizable Vinyl collection along with a good Analog front end in my system, but lately it seems when I listen to a SACD, DVD-A or Bluray Audio disc, that the sound is at the very least equal to my very best vinyl discs and in many many cases, the digital medium is seemingly considerably superior in Sound Quality. I can upgrade my Analog front end, but now we're into 1500$+ cartridges, another Turntable at perhaps another 2500$, and more tubes for my Pre-amp/sut at 125$ea... when a great DAC with top of the line DSD decoding begins at around 2500$'ish or less. I know Vinyl is on a considerable up tick over the last couple years, perhaps based on Nostalgia... but with really great DSD, why choose an Analog source material? discuss.

  27. Yes. When you consider that most classical music is miked in the far field, that should really get your attention, i.e., it should be the opposite way around for close-miked pop/rock music, in a very big way. I don't believe that most people understand the degree to which popular music is really destructively mastered. And we are talking only about dynamic range here, which is but one way that mastering engineers (and really--the producers) put their "mark" on the music. It's really stomach turning, IMHO, regardless of how much I'm accused of making a big deal out of it. It's a really big problem-and a cultural one, to boot. Chris

  28. That was the topic of this bait for Thebes: https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/152495-what-is-hip-why-we-are/?p=1783659 The implications of this little experiment by Ian Shepherd are pretty serious, IMHO. It also helps me to finally validate what my ears have been telling me for at least 3 decades. I didn't invest any more heavily in vinyl records, since what many people are hearing as "sounding better than digital" isn't what the mastering engineer put on the original track, but rather artifacts, noise, and special types of distortion that vinyl brings. I believe that a lot of people have gotten used to hearing it from their childhood, but I've always found that vinyl records sound duller, with less stereo, less deep bass, no stereo in the bass, and really not-so-good cymbal sounds no matter what I try to do to correct the issues in reproduction. What I've done is to put my money into a nice old and quiet turntable with a reasonable cartridge and reasonable RIAA curve-correction (i.e., phono) preamp. This helps me to hear my old vinyl discs that haven't been made into CDs better than I ever heard them up until the advent of CDs en masse in mid-1980s. I have maybe 50 or so vinyl records that I still like to listen to from time to time--maybe about once/year that I can't buy the CD. I've found that the CD replacements for these old records that have been made, once you make sure that the DR hasn't been squashed by looking at their DR values when buying, these old-record/new CDs always are a revelation in sound that I savor hearing. If I get into a nostalgic mood, perhaps I'll shop at the thrift stores for more vinyl records, but I've found that I really don't like listening to someone else's damaged records--which has been my experience greater than 50% of the time when I buy old vinyl records at these places, and I never could stand pops, ticks, infrasonic bass wow from warped records, and suffering high frequency as the record plays toward the center of the platter. None of these problems exist in CDs. Now we know that the other artifacts of vinyl records are just that, artifacts, not really the source material. The interesting thing about digital is that all you need are good DACs--I didn't say "expensive" DACs, since no one that I know can really hear any difference between the two once you control for errors in acoustic polar lobing due to cabling or analog amplifier changes. YMMV. Chris EDIT: I just saw tromprof's posting above - and it reads surprisingly similar.

  31. https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/151288-nad-160270-amp-and-preamp-for-sale/#entry1757350 I have a very nice and professionally repaired NAD C-270 amp. I recently purchased this amp and the matching pre-amp. As I only really need the pre-amp, the amp is up for sale. There were some issues when it arrived. There was audible distortion from the right channel. In August of this year, I took it to Luis Galvez of Stereoadvisor in Sacramento, CA. He completely disassembled it and found it needed several resistors, a couple of transistors and a new protection circuit controller. He also adjusted the bias and DC offset. Total repairs cost me $294.06, I have the receipt and some of the replaced parts. The amp now functions flawlessly and sounds great. Cosmetically it is virtually mint save for one small dingus on the front upper left corner, see pic. I know how to pack heavy items well, double box, reinforced corners, large bubble wrap etc. No peanuts allowed! I generally ship via FedEx ground but can do UPS if desired. I am asking $350 which will cover shipping to the lower 48, all fees and, packing materials. If you have any questions or would like additional pictures, please don't hesitate to ask. I have linked the original sale above. Thanks for looking!

  32. Its dead for those of us who dont use it. I never thought in a million years I would be the guy that streams music. But being able to listen to anything instantly with really good SQ is to good to pass up imo. Spotify is worth every penny. Think of all the songs that we love but will never buy because its the only good song on the cd. All the remastered versions that sound WAY better than the original cd release. All the movie sound tracks for every movie we can think of but would never go out and buy. And the best part is all the new music we find that we would have never found or heard with out Spotify (or another online web)

  33. I hate exposed wires, so I tackled the problem. I wall-mounted my display, and dropped some boxes into the wall behind the TV and the equipment below. The boxes are chopped out at the back to fit a large volume of wires. The covers are plain cover plates with a 1" hole hogged out in the middle. This took care of any hanging wires, but my cable modem and wireless router are also in here, so there's a lot of wires below, as well as the ugly covers and outlet visible through the inside of the rack. I fashioned a curtain from some black fleece fabric, and stapled it to the back of the rack. Now it looks clean. The curtain "blacks out" the rack, and even hides the few wires that are still in front of it, since I replaced all the 5' yellow CAT5 cables with 2' black ones. I'm happy with the end result.

  35. Having just returned to having the means and interest in playing vinyl this last year, I think it is just a very personal choice. When I get home from work and need some quality downtime, it's digital and I have a great time pumping up the volume and putting the day behind me. On the other hand, getting around to different vinyl stores, meeting people with similar interests and histories has been great. Last week I found an album recorded live in a bar that I was at in 1977. Not going to get that any other way, and what a trip that was. On a Saturday afternoon putting on some vinyl and stretching out on the couch takes me places I'm happy to be. I'm guessing everyone's mileage varies, but as the previous poster mentions in a different manner. Different strokes for different folks. Now I'm getting in the car and driving three hours into Farm Country to listen to Willie Nelson and Neil Young, live in a corn field. Could be called-Cornstock!

I think it was the 2285B that I gave to my cousin after a trip to the tech to make sure everything worked right. Yea I like the pretty blue lights when the are on a Marantz. Not so much when their in my rearview window though.

I have two Minature Aussie's that are much smarter than I am and have gone through all of this with them and then some. Now I have a 110 lb 15 month old German Shepherd that is destroying my Oak trees due to the Squirrels. I haven't been able to catch him doing it, only finding huge chunks of bark at my doorstep. Its to the point I cant risk experimenting to deter it, I'm going to have to wrap the trees in heavy vinyl, rubber or metal which is going to be rather ugly in my backyard. dtel, I know you're a tree guy, you have any suggestions? thx And the suspect known as..."Wolfie"
