  1. Hey gang, hump day here. It means something different to me than it does to Chuck (tarheel) though Joe, ice is about all you can do. I'd take a lot of pictures to use for blackmail later down the road. Mark, I'm confident you'll figure out exactly what to leave the diner guy. You have a knack for that sort of thing. (other) Chuck, I'd still rather cut grass than be at work. You guys have a good one.

  2. There is a simple explanation for this: in your teens and early 20's you listen to popular crappy music to ride the hype and get girls but when you finally settle down you realize its garbage and stick with the good stuff.

  7. To me, the RC-64 is the huge one. The RC-7 is only 1" taller, but the RC-64ii is 1" deeper, a whopping 9" wider and 9lbs heavier. Same is true with their respective towers. The RF7 looks tiny next to the RF-7ii and the RF-83

  8. Mornin' guys. Not too much on the horizon today except grass cutting and trimming. Gotta get out there before I need to bring in a brush hog or our crazy weather takes another 180. Mark, for your diner friend, maybe get him a thank you card and some $. Simple and small business guys have tough way to go these days. Cheers to all.

  9. Mark...... send him some PWK glasses or a sack of crawfish? How about some Bertie County peanuts from NC? Pressure washed LF's house, patio, and driveway Monday. 12 mile bike ride yesterday. Lower back a little tender this morning but the coffee is good. Beautiful weather here. LF off to play tennis and I may take Jake to the doggie park. Cheers Ladies and Gents

  13. anyone here have or heard a vintage marantz 1060 integrated amp? i have a very nice 1060 thats been collecting dust for a few years, it has a scratchy volume knob that cleaned up with some deox-it cleaner. its rated at only 30wpc, but thought it would be a good match with my k-horns. it sounds pretty darn good at low to mid levels, havent really pushed it yet. coming from a big 200wpc adcom 555ii amp & pre i was a little concerned how the little marantz would do. it doesnt seem to have the impact of the adcom & thats obviously due to the big power difference but at lower volumes it seems to have a warmer more musical quality & honestly has pretty good bass untill i go to higher levels. one thing i do like is that it has a mid level adjuster, never seen that before, only the standard bass & treble adjustments. i got it for a great deal with some vintage sansui speakers a friend of a friend was selling so i thought i'd put it through its paces after cleaning it up. just curious if anyone has ran this marantz on other heritage speakers or k-horns & what your thoughts were on its performance. it gets excellent reviews & seems to bring good money in the used market. also this can be ran as just a pre amp, think i will play with it as a pre on the adcom & my other amps, rotel 200wpc & an onkyo m-504.

  14. I noticed they used a 4 cu ft box as well. I believe that's the MINIMUM size box you can put it in. Ficar recommends 4-8 cu ft for sealed. I would think they broke in drivers before testing them. If they are pro's they did. Driver T/S specs are based on drivers which are broken in. The difference in 4 cu ft and 8 cu ft with this driver is marginal at best: Don't know. Did you select dual voice coil? Was the Qts and Qes calculated? They look way off. I don't have winisd on this computer. Some of the information on their site was wrong. The biggest thing was the CMS. They had it as .73mm/N, which is way off. This caused the WinISD calculations to be way off as demonstrated above. Also, I had entered the RE as 1.4 and it is 2.8 since there are two voice coils. Oops... Here is the new graph. It looks a lot better, and is now -3db at about 25Hz. Much better... That Fs is still way too high. That driver should be down in the high teens. That's also causing your Vas to be way too low. For comparison, the Ascendant Ava 18 I mentioned above has a Fs of 18Hz and a Vas of 407 liters, and the SI HT18 has a Fs of 17Hz and a Vas of 412 liters. Vas is a function of Cms * (Sd)^2, so something in the 1xx liters range is very low for an 18 unless it is incredibly stiff. We may be in a bit of luck. Data-bass measured and actual Q18 in 2012. I have entered that data into WinISD and run a new graph. The article is here: http://www.data-bass.com/data?page=system&id=98&mset=108 The fs was in the 30hz range with that version of the driver, and the vas was even lower than the one from the website. It is all a bit confusing, but at least a third party has offered some hard numbers: I do know that they've gone the multi-spider route lately, perhaps that's what's going on to some extent. Even then, a Vas of 110L for an 18" driver is extremely unusual unless it's car audio specific: small box, high power. The Q line is (was) intended to be their non tiny enclosure 2kW/ea offering. Perhaps times have unfortunately changed. If they've really gone the high stiffness route, then nein for HT use, unfortunately But I guess the market drives the product. Unless something new comes up, I tend to agree. These may have been the ultimate, but I think the drivers Carl is using in his IB would destroy these in LFE. What about a LilMike LilWrecker under a 44" x 90" section of that? It would leave a 7.75" overhang on the near sides and 10" on each end. I drew a picture: The LilWrecker is a beast of a tapped horn sub. Here is a nice (low cost) build of a LilWrecker: Folded Tapped Horn Subwoofer Tuned to 17hz Here is a LilWrecker compared to an F20 size wise... Actual LilWrecker measurements:

  15. I disagree, or maybe to make my point more clear....the lascala has horrible distortion at 40Hz, and is much worse than a Chorus II at those frequencies. Certain genres of music require different frequency bandwidths. If your system doesn't replicate the frequencies important to the music, then the speaker isn't satisfying its first and most important function. The lascala horn stops loading at ~100Hz. Below that it is a sealed driver in a small box. The 50Hz claims are misleading and ignore the importance of voicing / frequency response of the system. What you should be noting is that certain genres of music require wider bandwidths from the system. Jazz is probably one of the narrowest bandwidth genres you could pick. Rock simply requires lower frequency extension in order for the instruments to be heard as intended. All that to say - you could always EQ the lascala to match the frequency response of the Chorus II....and what you're going to find at the lower frequencies is that the Chorus II has lower distortion. This is because the K33 is not a very linear driver, and you're not getting any horn benefit. On the other hand, the K48 is a much more linear driver intended to be used for higher excursions. Ironically, the K48 excursion will be less because it's a vented system - and that distortion is super low until driving to insane levels. Anyways, my point is that just because it's not hornloaded doesn't mean it's higher distortion. And just to be clear, I'm talking about IMD's here....not just THD. The La Scala is not doing much at 40HZ so how audible is that distortion anyway? I don't recall my La Scalas sounding distorted on lower stuff, but it has been a while since I had them in my living room. They seemed to completely run out of bass around 50 HZ, the drop off was rather abrupt. The La Scala is far from a perfect speaker, there are a lot of compromises built into the design, the biggest being the bass horn is too short. Ideally you pair a La Scala with a good horn sub and then you really do get superior bass compared with any direct radiator. I built a tuba table to pair with mine. I'm not trashing the Chorus, I have owned a pair and it is a fine speaker, but one you get used to very clean horn bass it is hard to go back.

  16. The RC 64 and 64II are huge speakers. In youthman's pic the RF 7 II woofer even looks larger the RF 7's. No doubt, the RC 7 and RC 64 are great center channel speakers. Now, Metro's RC 7II is a work of art!

  19. You will definitely get used to the size. I remember recently commenting how large the Cornwalls were and how they would be too big for me until someone pointed out they actually have a smaller footprint than my LaScalas. LOL Now if you were going from the RF-42ii to the RF-7ii....that might take a bit longer to get used to. That's because they shifted when I cranked them up really loud.

  20. A lot of folks already consider the Heresy too large for a bookshelf, but back in the day the Heresy speakers started and when JBL had the L100 Century, they were still considered bookshelf speakers. My Heresy II speakers are on a cabinet on each side of my tv and sound great. Even the Heresy II guts in a larger cabinet (Tangent 400) is way better on the bass side, and for most, that is what is lacking. For many, a small modification to the original Heresy crossover will smooth out the sound, and make it more aurally palatable, but not add any bass. However, smoothing out the response allows you to turn them up more without taking your head off, and will make you think you have more bass. Oh... welcome to the forums. Bruce

  23. See point "V" (five) on page 4: https://community.klipsch.com/forums/storage/3/442564/Eight%20Cardinal%20Points%20by%20PWK4.pdf Clearly, there are a few people that really don't care for bass performance (or that don't correct for in-room bass peaks using EQ below the room's Schroeder frequency). A loudspeaker's bass performance is the most valued discriminator between loudspeaker types in Floyd Toole's studies, and is mentioned in his book. If you run a REW sweep of a loudspeaker on thin stands or stands with legs, you'll see the bass FR suck-outs vs. placing the loudspeaker on the floor, or on solid stands that are the size of the loudspeaker box (or larger) all the way to the floor. 25. Man that is one sexy setup! Just curious....what is the difference between blonde ash and Maple? The Klipsch website says the RSW-15 only came in Cherry and Ash Wood (guessing that's black) but you and I both own RSW-15's that are neither of those flavors. Best wishes with your sale.

  26. On one hand, I think Paul Klipsch, designer of the Heresy I, warned about cavities under speakers, including the Heresy, saying that cavities "degraded the lower octaves." He based that statement on tests he ran, and made it into one of his cardinal rules. With typical speaker stands, you would have one BIG cavity under each Heresy. So, It would probably be better to use your cinder blocks, oriented so there are no holes facing front. Klipsch liked speakers close to walls, or better yet in a corner. He pointed out that moving a speaker from a position out in a room to pushed all the way into a corner was about the equivalent of multiplying your amplifier power by 4 (mostly in the bass, due to the corner increasing the bass). Moderns who put a speaker in a corner often put absorbant materials on the right and left walls, slightly in front of the speaker, to prevent midrange reflections. On the other hand, if you are going to use a subwoofer with them, having them a little out in the room might not hurt, since the sub would be taking over the low bass. I still like solid faced cinder blocks the best. They look good painted black. In my Home Theater, I use Heresy IIs for surrounds, and they crossover to the sub at 80 Hz, and they are on homemade stands. They sound good, but surrounds are not as critically important as front speakers.

  27. If someone demos any of the contending speakers for you, include in the discs you take along some with percussive bass (timpani &/or the Telarc big bass drum would be good) and also some pipe organ with low pedal notes. That will let you listen for cabinet resonances (especially with the LS I). I presume you will be using a sub if you get either LS. Some people like LS I or II with a sub, some would rather get the cleaner sound of LS I or II without a sub. Using a horn-loaded sub should solve that problem, I think. I would be using 2 tapped horn subs with either.

  28. If I were to try this . . . I'd get a big piece of paper and mark off the mouth dimensions, and the location of the driver, which is going to have a 2 inch diameter, such and such inches back. Then draw a tractrix curve starting at the wide horizontal mouth and draw the curve until it points to the side of the driver. Then a straight line to the driver. Then start at the narrower vertical and do the same. You'll wind up with a tractix mouth transitioning to the straight back section which will be conical. You'll have to fudge a bit to make the final transition at the throat from a rectangular to the circular mouth. It will be a bear to bend wood for the mouth end. My thought is that great precision is not necessary. WMcD

  29. So it looks like I should try out some first gen scala's. The KHorn would be nice but no way false corners are going to pass waf in the living room and my man cave is only 12x12 or I would have a set in it. I sure wish I could I've heard them and man they are so sweet just for S&G what is the minimum room size for khorns? I really like the looks of the Belle and think this would pass waf for a permanent fixture in the living room, I found a set but they are way overpriced IMHO. I considered the La Scala 2 because I may be able to get a pair local to me. In saying that tho the first gen scala can be had at a pretty good price. Maybe I should start another post asking Arkansas forum members with Scala's if they wouldn't mind a demo.

  30. Update: The A/V rack came in today. It's HEAVY. Well much heavier than I thought it would be. Went together very easy. Will be mounting inside wall in the upcoming week. Need to build a sturdy shelf for it to sit on and bolt to. AND got tired of waiting for an electrician so I could see and keep working, so I added my own breaker and hooked up some wires! And it worked. And I didn't die!! Did I mention I'm terrified of main 200amp panels!?!? Now I can keep plugging along!

  33. The last bad was great, 50% of the reason I wanted to go. It was Rockin Doopsie and the Zydeco twisters, they put on a great show, it's could not have been better. Just in case you don't like Zydeco they played a lot of other music also. Three of the band members are brothers, the front man Rockin Doopsie sings, and his two brothers play drums and accordion. It got a little muddy in the grass area in front of the stage, and rained the last hour but it's didn't slow down anything.

  37. Hmmm...I doubt double MWM's with 402s would pass waf either. Nevermind, probably wouldn't work in a 12'x12' room anyways! I wish you the best. I would have to say the LaScalas are an excellent buy! We listened to Khorns in at least five or different locations. Never seemed to have the sound we were anticipating. We kept going back to the sound of the LaScalas....once we heard the double MWM/402 set up...our minds were made up! Two channel at it's finest!

  39. As I have stated before, these are not being sold in my country and the dealer I talked to didn't even know about them! I can not import them from US either, because of their cost and size. We have certain limits at customs regarding size/weight and cost for people to import stuff. If the products price/weight are beyond them you can not import. You can not say, I am ok with the taxes, i will pay, get me my stuff. It will be considered a commercial transaction and you would need a company with proper permissions to do that. That is why I contacted the Klipsch distributor here but got that answer. So I can not buy a pair and see for myself dear Chris. I know they are big horns, but they are not that big for me to be afraid of building. I love doing stuff myself. An 8 feet high tapped horn may be considered big, but I still built it out of mdf and enjoy it immensely. It weighs over 220pound but is incredibly rigid and sounds/feels wonderful. This is no commercial approach either so I do not think I am harming anyone. Yes that is what I think as well about the profile. That is why I was asking for help. Maybe I should write to Roy Delgado and ask for him directly for help.
