  2. Thanks for all the great input! So we went, we listened, we bought. Wife and I both agreed on the La Scalas. Even my wife, who is not an audiophile, admitted it was an easy choice. I took some Eagles and Steely Dan and the seller had some some classic jazz. He also had Cornwalls IIs at his house and his personal La Scalas IIs to reference. The La Scala IIs seemed to have a bit more bass balance than the LSi, but it could have been the 200wpc amp driving them versus the 30wpc we used to demo the LSi. I was happy with what I heard. The CWs had huge bass but I could hear the distortion in the mid bass and more concerning, I lost some of the guitar solos in the mix. I have some hearing loss so I brought music I knew well and I expected to not hear something. Surprisingly, my wife also noticed the loss of some guitar solos, and as a guitar player, this was unacceptable. The LSi have the AA X-over and are all original. Bass could be stronger but I could hear every note and the articulation and sound stage is what I was after. They delivered that. Speaking of delivery, wow these things are heavy! Even with them being four boxes, the bass cabs are a wheeled only moving experience. The LSi are well refinished, look new and though not beautiful in the living room, look nice enough. My wife is very understanding when it comes to sound. She agrees how they sound is more important than how they look. It only took 40 years of marriage to get her there. Now I need to find the rest of the system. One component down, more to go. CD

  3. so, I'm sure I'm not the only one whose life has been a little busy. but a little while back, I finally connected with forum member Tom Adams and made a deal for his '72 oiled walnut CW he posted here: fs-oiled-walnut-vert-horn-conrwalls/ wow! really good looking, awesome sounding great pair of speakers! I just love them! finally posting to the "what I got" thread because I finally had some time to resize photos & compose a little about them. (a 3hr + layover @ ATL on yet another work trip, what better time to post to the forum, right?) anyway, they are just as beautiful in person as they look online. recommend the seller. he delivered as advertised, even helped me load them up. what a guy! anyway, here they are. did I say that I absolutely love them?!? (I would post more but even trying to downsize photos, it still says I'm over the size limit. oh well.) but maybe this link works like I hope it does linky thing

  5. Let's go, we're burnin' daylight.... starting my second pail of good black coffee. Looks like we escaped any damage here from the latest round of severe weather, although if I got a couple of extra dings from the hail Sunday, I'm not sure I could tell from previous damage. It was mostly pea gravel sized but I saw a few golf ball sized chunks.

  7. I bought my Rf-711 from a Online dealer Acoustic Sound Design. I just wanted everyone to know what a great company they are. First of all they gave me a sweet deal on all my Klipsch speakers ....2Rf-711,a center channel RC-6411 AND 4 RP-250s. Everything was way below retail. The reason they are really good is that after having my RF-711S I discovered a small dent on my bottom woofer....I don't know how I could of missed it...but I did. I mailed him a pic of the dent and there's was no come back saying he didn't believe me that I made the dent which I didn't...today a new woofer was on my front porch. I must say this is one great place to buy Klipsch products.... Just a side note.....yesterday I got a Emotiva XPA Gen3 for my Fronts (Rf-711) 300 watts per channel I know most of you say it makes no difference but It made a huge different in the sound on my system I mean huge.....it's like I switched something on....it's better on the low and high volume......my receiver is a newer Yamaha A-2060 a very nice receiver....so I am a believer that the new receivers don't have enough watts to really do the job. It sounded ok before but now it sounds Great! Silverfox

  9. My personal experience as a former Klipsch employee is that pretty much EVERY GAL who worked at Klipsch when I was there went for LaScalas over Cornwalls...almost EXCLUSIVELY! They would buy Heresys first, then LaScalas....then many would buy K-horns...very seldom did they choose the Cornwalls over the LaScalas, and MOST of the time, if they DID purchase Cornwalls, they were getting them for a family member....but keep in mind that home theater and availability of subs to go with LaScalas was not actually happening (yet) except for a very small minority of buyers throughout the late 1970's and into the mid 1980's....just saying...and also keep in mind that "getting dressed-up" for the majority of the gals working there consisted MORE of putting on make-up, doing their hair, and squeezing into either daisy dukes or Levis 501's or "boot cut" jeans with a tank-top or Klipsch T-shirt more often than not back in those days. I kinda miss those days...ya'know??

  13. That's a 5 hour drive from where I live. It's much closer to Washington, DC and Western Maryland. I'm not kidding here, those look like a really nice platform for a refurb project or even as-is for the garage.

  14. Widened and deepened the desk and added side braces - all good now! Of course I came down with a wicked sinus infection and now can't hear and feel like I got hit with a truck - looks like I'll be in bed for a day or so.. at least they will be there when I feel better...

  15. Oh heck, he just read that off the back of the print. I just made up some numbers. But JL made me think, I was going through some pic's on the hard drive just looking, I put over 30,000 on it, and I doubt we have printed 25 pictures. But they are also on disc just in case. BSM, I love this stuff, Christy gave me my first good camera before we got married, a Canon AE-1 in 1977. Guess I wasn't a cheap date after all.

  16. I am using a new C2500 pre with a MC275 MK VI. I wanted the C2500 for HT bypass but found out late that it had to be powered up to allow bypass. Had I known that I would have gone another route, used an outboard DAC (or the one in the Oppo105). A couple of quirks on my Mc's triggering system; they are stereo with 2 hot connections and so in order to connect non-Mc equipment you need to have a stereo to mono trigger wire (easy enough to build). The pre-amp's meter back lights and the amp's small tube leds are controlled together; in order to turn off amp led you turn the pre-amp's meters off (no likey that). A stereo to mono trigger fixes that as one contact controls the lights. I also wish the C2500 line stage and 2 phono stage tubes were selectable off. In other words: don't power up the MM or MC phono stages unless I select that as an input...wasting tube life and since I don't use a TT anymore that was to be my repository of spare tubes. Sounds like I am biatching but I'm really not. I like the setup combo. If I was somewhere that I could have played with the units in a showroom I may have went with another pre-amp. On the fly "trim" via remote is really nice. Looks = KILLER MEN220 room correction arrives with UPS today.

  17. It's OK, you just now know who to take it out on. I can't drink it black, I need at least a little something to sweeten it a little, cream if I'm being fancy. But I don't even know what all that means in that saying. To me black = cowboy coffee

  19. I'm burned out on the whole career and it's impacting the quality of my work, my health, and my happiness. So I'm looking to take a couple of months to reconnect with my family, work on projects around the house, and figure out what I want to "do" now that I'm almost 35. Nothing lined up in the near term, but I can probably call in some favors for emergency work, and I've got some funds stashed away for the interim. Putting in my notice tomorrow. Anyone done something similar? Tips on how best to use this time to reinvent myself and recharge? Some days I'm more of a millennial than other days, this is one of them.

  26. Actually my price list is 2 years old and out of everything they carry, that's the one thing that isn't on there, but I could probably find out pretty easily.

  30. Yeah, numbers on my spreadsheet offend me when someone disagrees! NOT! I need to keep track of this speech because I end up explaining it a lot. My numbers are not "off." The numbers are the numbers. These are not "local" sales because there hasn't been a Klipsch dealer in West Virginia in 30 years. We have to "borrow" our used Heritage speakers from other states. I don't "seek out" prices, I just jot them down when they cross my path on this Klipsch Forum. That means usually Garage Sale and Alerts. Alerts means Craigs List, Ebay, Audiogon, and other auctions people run across and list. I make note of price and other factors if available. Sometimes it's just a price. I started keeping track of sales due to my poor memory and perception. Someone would pop up and ask how much La Scala's were worth on average. I would say my impression was $1250, someone else would pop up and say $1400 and others would say $1,000 all day long. Who was right? I didn't know so I started writing it down just for fun, just for my own amusement. Sometimes my impressions were backed up. More often my personal opinions were proven wrong, You are a sophisticated buyer and seller. Your answer to my question "how much is a speaker worth" I'm sure would be "it depends" and of course you would be right. It depends on age, condition, updates, upgrades, refinish (done good or bad), location (local or distant to the buyer) and how badly the Seller wants to move his speakers, and how bad a Buyer wants that particular one. So if I say the "average" is $1250 that number is almost meaningless because in Chicagoland where there is a lot of supply you can get them all day for $750. If you are in Houston they might be $2000 because they just don't come into that market very often. I added your sales to my Chorus II info. Since they are higher than the average I had, your speakers will raise the previous average. A rising tide lifts all ships. +++ Personal to Klipschfan: I'm leaving the house now but I'll back later tonight. I'll PM you the spreadsheet, just for your amusement and I'll expand that offer to everyone. Just shoot me a PM and I'll send you what I have.

  32. Phase should be set to 0. Auto on is an option. Most people don't want to manually turn on and off their subs so they leave this on. It uses very little power doing so, but the option is yours. Some have found the auto on/off feature better or worse for a given sub...some turn it off when little content is coming through...but the sub is still on, causing it to click back on on demand, which is really annoying!

  33. No, not an improvement. If you remove that cap the magnet on them is tiny and I do not think they can handle the same kind of power as a newer K-33. The pleated edge is small and limits excursion (not really an issue in a Klipschorn). They are desired by some I had them in my '62 Cornwall's and I could get them to bottom out when pushed even as rears. I bet it would be tough to get a recone kit for them.

  35. Digital has made us less careful (maybe worse) photographers due the "I'll take a thousand shots, and should get some good ones" strategy. When I shot weddings (back in the film days) I would make usually 150 medium format exposures to get 90 images for the finished album. Every shot had to be accurately exposed and composed. It was an economic reality since it cost about $1 in film and processing every time I clicked the shutter.

  36. You haven't seen film disappear until you hand your camera to a professional photographer. My brother-in-law is now a retired Detroit News photographer. In the old film days, he would grab my camera at family gatherings and instantly blow through a roll of film. I would kid him that the secret to getting good photos is to take a million, so that one of them would be good, the photographic equivalent to the infinite number of chimps typing Shakespeare.

  37. Thank You USNRET & derrickdj1 & garyrc! Yes, bought an mc275 VI. I'll need phono stage but have the DAC... No, would rather buy used & pay less just want to make sure what I get doesn't need work. Down the road I will want a HT 5.1 & SACD... So no on a c28 for sure, but yes I'm thinking tubes would sound best... So I need to be careful with whatever I get to make sure it's all compatible with my goals... Thanks again! Bill

  39. I had a marantz that would do that as well. Since my seating position isn't right in the center it would make one speaker much louder than the other. What I always did was keep all the other settings intact but set the speakers to the same level dB which make it sound a lot better in my situation. Also in my experience, not sure about your AVR because I've never used that model but stereo mode should keep the calibration. Make sure and set the speakers to small also, I know a lot of those callibration programs love to set them to large. If they are set to large, it may not use the sub when in stereo mode. That's been my experience with many AVR's.

  42. This movie is a fresh reminder of exactly why I chose to build a Dedicated Home Theater. One word....INTENSE! My son invited 9 of his friends over to watch Hacksaw Ridge. None of us had seen it. Man what a great film. Story was fantastic. Sound effects lifelike. The LaScala Trio brought out soooo much detail and presented a massive front sound stage. The quad RSW-15's added so much depth during the battle scenes. Several of us said that it is the best movie we have seen in awhile. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't seen it.

  44. That looks like an unsophisticated design with unrelated components thrown together in a box. A port should be more than a cutout with some chicken wire over it. Anytime you are selling a DIY home speaker project you have to sell the sound, which is hard to do. I think that speaker is worth whatever those components would sell for on the used market and that's it.
