  1. I had a heart plaque scan and it was REALLY high plus a strong family history of heart issues. Doc wanted to actually see if there were any blockages. Luckily the plaque build up was on the outside of the veins.

  4. Interesting. There's a similar theory about wolves evolving into dogs. I've queued the documentary below to the theory: namely, that when people began living in villages, wolves were attracted to the garbage dumps. The wolves with the least flight tendency ate the best. Ultimately, the tamer they became, the better they ate in relation to other wild species.

  6. Good morning, Bees are fascinating and necessary to our survival. It remains to be seen whether professional bee colony providers can effectively move the vast numbers of bees needed to pollinate the industrial single crop farms of such things as almonds.

  7. Kink56 - my experience with Belles has been over the last 6 moths - I had and just sold an original (read no mods or even recaps) early ‘70s pair as my space was not conducive to their use. Were I to have a space just for a listening room, I might have made another choice. I have had a recapped pair of ‘78 Hereseys that have been my main speaker for about 8 years (and am back to using) as the leadup sound to the Belles. The system I use to drive any of my speakers consists of ‘60s era McIntosh tube Pre-amps/amps. The amp that is often associated with bringing out the best in a speaker like the Belle is an MC225. I used one with the Bellles and also an MC240. I enjoyed the sound of my Belles through both amps. I believe mine would have been far better if I had at least done the crossovers. I will say that I found it a challenge to get placement and listening position dialed in. My experience with tubes is has been over many years, but very, very narrow. I don’t know the amp you have coming, but I do believe that if you have an opportunity to hear your Belles with either of the tube ams I mentioned, you will find a very enjoyable speaker. In all honesty, I love my Heresys and given the system I have and the room it is in, I would choose them over Belles. That is not because they sound better per say than the Belles though. From what I have read above, you are doing everything you can to give your pair a fair shake. I don’t know the Forte sound, my speakers prior to the Heresys were KG4s and 2.5s so I can’t speak to the differences to which you refer. Hopefully someone near you could set you up with a tube amp to give a listen. If ultimately, you don’t like the sound, know that someone will. There always seem to be more Belle buyers than Belles out there - one of the benefits of having a speaker no longer in production. Good luck, I hope you find a sound you like! Post some photos!

  8. I got out just when the Africanized bees started getting established here. I worry my okole [see if that doesn't get starred] off all spring/summer when I see swarms going by. We have a lot of wild hives around and I have a lot of old junk wood sheds. I had some hot as Italian [the standard yellow/black] that you HAD to suit up for. And some others that you could work wearing a T shirt and veil. the swarms don't present a problem, even though I am allergic. Give them time to set up and have something to defend. Then it can get nasty.

  9. Yes it's official, the British offshoot of inbred minor German princelings that ended up running Europe for a long while ,have elevated Ringo Star to a Knight of the Realm. He joins Sir Paul, Sir Elton and Sir Mick. Combined they make up the four ugliest looking people on the planet and easily out-butt-ugly the British royals, something I thought it was impossible to do. I can only assume his contribution to music rests on his participation in "I Am The Walrus" . I've always wondered why that song never gave rise to more mass murderers. I know I've always wanted to throttle someone whenever I heard it.

  10. I am with you, but maybe with a different perspective. I was in orchestral and marching bands for years so my auditory "memory" of what instruments should sound like is from the perspective of being up close and personal, as opposed to sitting in the audience. That's why when I listen to an orchestra recording I like the articulation of each instrument. I like to hear the difference in timbre between Tmpt 1 and Tmpt2, I like to hear the ping and decay of the cymbal and the FEEL of the concert bass drum, something you don't get sitting in the audience, but something you do get with the instruments closely mic'd and played back with a good speaker system with sub. I like the way the caps are stacked on top of one another, with the air core properly oriented and attached to the stacked caps. I have done a few DIY crossovers, but I would NEVER have thought of that!

  11. I don't have any experience with the A-300 or PT-100 but I own a lot of Emotiva products and have not been disappointed yet. Since Emotiva has a 30 day money back guarantee, why not try the Emotiva? If after a couple of weeks you are not satisfied it costs you nothing to return them and you go Yamaha. Tim

  12. have to give a shout out to a "local team" here -> Miss State dominated Louisville last nite AT UofL 79-56. their worst home loss (in that arena I guess. IDK; didn't watch, heard it on local news/sports/talk today) and some here are STILL saying would have been better to go to the real dance, be one & done rather than make it to NYC. I'm all for getting to the big dance if you can, but we've already discussed all that. gotta pull for them a little bit in the big apple. now they get Penn St on 3/27 at the Garden. good times!

  16. Unless you're talking about Emotiva XPA amps or UPA amps, pass. Get the Yamaha. I have a friend that has the A-300 and has regretted it. He has more demanding speakers, but the BasX lacks authority where the other lines would shine. The Yamaha will serve you better of the choices mentioned. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk

  19. I took a "sick day" yesterday. Slept the whole day. Wasn't up to snuff. Better. Time to open the doors and windows. Let the house warm up. Just had to say that. I know some of you are still enjoying winter. I didn't even have a fire last night. Have to go to the kitchen to get coffee. Back to work today. Laundry. Wife is doing grade cards ... she is "unavailable". They're due tomorrow. She will be off next week. Spring break. She needs the rest. I question her wanting to work "one more year"... She getting frazzled. Mostly the BS paperwork for the govt. I promise to not go off on a rant.... Promise!

  20. One of our local beekeeper does some migratory pollination services,,, almonds in CA. given a choice, the bees won't work almonds. They have to place the colonies deep inside the orchards to force them to take what is presented. If you want to look for a cause in the decline of honeybees, start with Monsanto's GMO's, and their corn that makes Bt in its pollen.

  21. a few of us are being blessed with nice weather. 85` today @dtel I'm pretty sure it's rhododendrons that make the poisonous honey. Keeping a couple of hives is a good hobby level. Sorta like having an aquarium that gives food. FWIW African bees were released in LA back in the late 50's. Mean bees are not a new thing. Blame it on SteveTabor

  22. An interesting viewpoint from the perspective of psychology: young people (18-30) listen to music in order to escape social interactions, while older people (60-75) listen to reconnect with mostly pleasant memories and to lessen social isolation. Nice article. While it is obvious to me that those stated functions of music are typical and pervasive, it also seems to me that there are other functions that music provides that aren't discussed in the article--not only with "self-fulfillment", but also with personal exploration, empathic learning about others (by listening to their music), and understanding the worldviews--gestalts--and experiences of others, especially those whom we might have little connection to and understanding of. Those functions, among others, seems to me are just as important--or perhaps even more--as each of us continues our own internal learning/growth. I've found that music plays a key role in effective creativity and problem solving. These cases are typically not discussed by those that are trained to cut out music from their working environments (since silence is the only generally acceptable state for intellectual work--like going to a library or quiet place to work). [I would think that legal environments are governed by this sort of "social constraint".] Many times I've found that silence is not the answer, but rather listening to music is like a stimulator or mental lubricant to get over conceptual impasses to get through certain types of problem solving activities. This is historically rejected in business environments where many people must share a relatively small office space in order to "collaborate" and save on real estate costs...to the detriment of the performance of individuals solving problems. Having music playing openly in these environments is socially rejected by others that may dislike the musical selections that others might prefer, due to the differing musical preferences and tasks that each person is concurrently performing. Even "earbuds" aren't socially acceptable in such places and instances. I've found this to be highly counterproductive to achieving the best performance. The privilege of listening to mentally stimulating music to problem solve ranks up there with other human privileges of taking coffee breaks, exercise, or any other more culturally acceptable methods of breaking the monotony, mental gridlock, and opening up new paths of thinking. There are other functions of music, such as intellectual and emotional focusing and stimulation, and as a tool to help unwind or develop solutions to other non-related puzzles and challenges (sort of like solving a Rubic's Cube or any other mental task). Even more functions exist for music--including bearing and lessening painful and discomforting experiences (recovering from injuries, sickness, or chronic discomfort), sort of like a "relaxation response" phenomenon, or re-imagining oneself in a completely different life situation to release oneself from the constraints and the grind of your current status or life situation. Music permits us the freedom to re-imagine ourselves unencumbered by current reality, to allow us to transcend our current constraints on "who we are", to "what we can imagine" a life or situation. This is not escapism but rather a means to constructive re-imagining our current situation to solve problems. Other functions of music allows people to gather together and share in religious or patriotic services, or perhaps just bear life's weight a little easier by singing along or just sharing the musical experience. All of these topics (among others) are not really discussed in that article, but they clearly are just as real. Not everyone takes advantage of these functions of music, it seems. Chris

  23. It does resemble a false arailea, the big difference besides price is the Maple can take freezes. I like false arailia's I had a few over the hears as houseplants. Well it looks like that kind of J maple, there are over 300 variety's of J maples. I have no idea which one is poisonous but I would guess the Rhododendron. Only because they do not grow here and I have never heard of that. Actually the Azalea's were made from the Rhododendron, they are in the same family. It may have been bred out when they designed the Azalea ? Our daughter started doing bees about a year ago, all I know about it is she gave me a quart of honey, I don't even know if they still do it ?

  25. I understand why you "used" to be. My friend's neighbor keeps bees. Bees are a PITA. Maybe the beekeeper and people who live far away think it's cool, but for the neighbors who have to put up with it, bees are a real nuisance. They get worked-up and go around stinging back yard pets and driving them crazy.

  37. well said.....so where do the 40-50 year olds.....fit into this equation ? " young people (18-30) listen to music in order to escape social interactions, while older people (60-75) listen to reconnect with mostly pleasant memories and to lessen social isolation. " but all age groups.....also gather together for a live event..... And interact with each other.... music is still a live event.... and still envolves social interaction.. whether it's going to a concert... or just simply putting on a vinyl record.... listening to vinyl is a event within itself.... only technology has made listening easier....and not for the best..

  42. Well, it's been rather crazy lately. We closed on the land last Friday (3/16) so that part is done and officially ours. On the night before, we met with the realtor and he was able to get our house listed midnight Thursday while watching NCAA basketball, I think. So the next morning, before we closed on the land, I get a text about 9:30am saying a realtor out of Jacksonville (about 35 minutes from us) wanted to show the house. Wow...uh, ok...that's great! It wasn't another 30 minutes and he had someone that wanted to see it that day at 5pm. Holy cow... We had been packing things in and putting them in storage figuring that it would take a little while to sell and the whole process. But, to make the long story short, both parties were interested in it already and both "loved it". The group that saw it Sunday put in an offer yesterday morning and we countered last night and our offer was accepted! So here we go...the ball is rolling even faster now. The good Lord has been good to us over the last couple of years and I can't believe this house sold in 4 days. But we will take it. Now the scrambling starts to get everything packed away in storage over the next 30 to 45 days. We will be renting a camper from a family friend ($100 a month) for the months it takes to build the new house and it's going to be cramped for sure. It will be worth it in the long run. Lots to do....

  43. If more than one person is in the room it is very difficult to have consistent bass with 1. In that case 2 subs is imo a big help. The Geddes paper which is a landmark study suggests that 90% of the maximum benefit from placing say 50 subs can be achieved with 2 subs. 4 subs is better than 2 but has that large diminshing return. But to make a room almost perfect within a listening area 4 seems to be the key number. 1 sub is required to do HT. 2 subs adds say a 50% improvement to flat response across multiple seats...4 subs another 10 or so.
    1 point
  44. The quick answer is "no" you will not get 200% better bass, or even 200% more bass. A second sub has a little more bass output, not double. A second sub accomplishes two things. The most important is that the second sub will even out nulls and peaks in the bass response. There will be fewer spots where the bass is greatly diminished, and the "one note" thumping is diminished. In terms of output a second sub adds 3 db to the peak SPL. +++ Edit: "Is is worth the extra money?" The majority opinion is "yes" a second sub is important to good overall bass response. I am in the minority, I am happy with my single 15" sub. I listen to mostly Youtube vids through the computer in 2.1, and in a small room. My living room setup is 3.0 and at one time I had a 15" sub and a 12" sub in a 5.2 setup. I was advised to lose the 12" sub, which I did. I thought the 5.1 setup sounded good, and about the same as with the dual subs but I sat in the MLP most of the time. My wife sits in the null.

  45. Here is a review of my process: The kit, I came very well packaged in one box. Very quick shipping Everything was well labeled and all of the electric components were in separate zip lock bags. The instructions were about 10 pages plus a couple pages depending on the options you choose. A high resolution color photo and color diagram of the point to point wiring are included. Mechanical assembly, Pretty straight forward. Have good lighting and a clean counter space about 3' wide and 2' deep. A lazy Susan would be helpful. If you're right handed place the soldering station on your right and the solder on the left. Do not attempt to out think the directions! Follow them to the letter and in order, it will all make sense in the end. There are many short small screws and nuts. Pick a direction to face all of the screw slots. Some pre-soldering is done to make things easier in later steps. Chuck wire pairs in a variable speed drill to twist, go slow and keep some backward tension as it twists. Electrical assembly, Wide tip soldering iron for most of the point to point wiring works well, a small pencil tip for the circuit board is required. Load the resistors and caps by the instructions and bag, DOUBLE check your part orientation and part location and the solder and flush cut excess. When using an auto stripper on the supplied 20 ga. wire, bend the pieces in half to avoid pulling the wire sheath as it strips. Route and bend the point to point wiring so that it lays in place before soldering. Don't know if it matters, but I wore a cotton glove when inserting the tubes. Start up, Again follow the instructions. I did have 2 wiring errors and 1 missed solder connection. I ordered the attenuator kit, so for start up I just plugged in a CD player and a pair of speakers then started playing music. I've been running it for a couple hours each day and cooling it down to heat cycle it before putting the bottom on just to make sure everything stays in place, I will recheck the screws and then button it up and insert into my main system. The bias lowers as the amp heats up, so I adjust it after 5 min of power up, then just before power down, the variance gets smaller each time. Conclusion, Its my first tube amp, I am in love. Main system, NAS all FLAC, AT LP120 Modded Ortofon Blue, Sirius Internet> Sonos Connect> Cambridge DAC Magic Plus> MiniDSP DDRC88BM> VTA ST70> Cornscalla Type D
