  1. Just a minor update. After moving everything around, re-positioning, I am blown away. Not only am I getting good bass, I now have amazing detail and the imaging/soundstage are so wonderful. I even had my 7 year old and baby momma tell me where they think voices, instruments are coming from when they had her eyes closed to confirm it (separately). I fully upgraded to the ALK cross overs and that just made the horns sound so rich. The listening experience went from very forward and intense to something much smoother without losing what I love about horns. I'm so happy with the setup I'm in heaven... Cheers!

  6. Recently acquired KPT-415 cabinets. Looks like they are due for a woofer rotation. I will remove them, measure, inspect and clean the drivers, then turn each one 180 degrees, just for fun.

  7. Speaking of control of booze...funny story. Got to Patuxent River Flight Test Center in 1990, very, very Southern Maryland. Went into "town" in my rental car, and came upon my first Drive thru liquor store, serving drinks from a drive thru window.....Vodka/tonic, 7 and 7, you name it. I was like...."Wow, I guess this is the good ole boys town...."

  8. I understand you should rotate the tires on your bike 180 degrees too.... Just so you don't go removing them to make that happen, you can simply roll it forward a couple feet.

  9. I correctly predicted that MSU would not cover against Illinois. Hell, they not only failed to cover, they lost outright. They were awful. This week I predict that Michigan will not cover against MSU. They should win at home against a very down MSU team. If they win, it would be the fourth time in the last twelve games. The Wolverines would be wise to put the Buckeyes out of their thoughts and focus on getting past Sparty, for a change.

  10. About 24 hours ago, a really nice guy sold me his "80s babies", a really nice set of Klipsch KG 4s. 1986 I think. My first Klipsch set. Backstory: I recently decided to try tubes (tube pre on order) and wanted something really efficient to drive them and that I could resell after this experiment. I put them in place of my KEF LS50s (computer flac files => Mytek pre => Bryston 4B sst) and my jaw dropped. Damn things were way more interesting than I imagined. Love the detail and the way they can handle playing quiet or the Dead with equal skill. A bit bright but interesting enough that I started thinking about refinishing the cabinets and perhaps refreshing the cross over, caps, etc. . . . you know futzing with them. It dawned on me somewhere in the middle of eight or ninth CD that rather than put that effort into the KG 4s, maybe I should think in terms of upgrading to something higher up the Klipsch food chain. So here's the question - what part of the aforementioned food chain would you suggest? As you think about the more accomplished vintage models Klipsch made, is there a "break point", a place where one begins to see the "heart and soul" of Klipsch? Or maybe said another way, as you go up the ladder, what do you gain in more accomplished models? My listening room is smallish but all mine, so size is limited to keeping me on the good side of my neighbors (i.e. no La Scala's and the room has bad corners). I will have, any moment, a nice tube front end. And, oh yes, I have vinyl...lots of vinyl...maybe too much vinyl. Anyway, thanks for any insights. I look forward to learning more! Dan

  11. Nothing a 12 gauge loaded with birdshot at the ready couldn't resolve. Assuming that they co-operate and leave city limits during hunting season (which is now in a lot of places). Best to back off several yards and give them 'fair warning' first though. Next stop, some cleaning, plucking and a big roast pan. Per Anthony Hopkins: Best served 'with a side of Fava Beans and a nice Chianti'. Wb

  12. VINTAGE AIR GUITAR ON CRAIGSLIST, $799 Some wag in Illinois’ Champaign-Urbana area has put up an ad on Craigslist for a sweet “Vintage Air Guitar” that his uncle gave him after securing it at a Thin Lizzyconcert in the 1970s. The instrument is described as a “chick magnet.” Because of the high value of this item, the seller requests “no lowball offers or scams please.” Here’s the description, in full: (BTW This has nothing to do with Dave Hickey’s classic book of art criticism Air Guitar, which is available used on Amazon for less than four bucks.) If you buy this you can train for the annual Air Guitar World Championships. The current titleholder is Kereel “Your Daddy” Blumenkrants, watch his prize-winning performance here:

  22. As I related before they were urethaned before and the satin finish just looked awful. I still have some pictures on another computer that is not connected to the internet. Anyway they look very nice now in the picture and in person. I took down the old finish to bare wood, I believe that the had been sanded before I had got them, luckily the fancy veneered plywood that Klipsch use had some thickness. If I remember right, they are labeled HOO on the tags, that may have been why that looked s dark (urethane over a dirty oiled oak finish?). I would like someone to populate them and enjoy them, I had my fun refinishing and making the slant risers, It's time to move then along... Oh yea, I think I used a spar urethane varnish for the finish and sprayed it on, I may have thinned it with acetone but I don't really remember for sure, I do remember I sprayed them on a cold day (it was in the low 40's in direct sun) in December I believe . Thanks for the complement Edgar, sometime you get lucky, I think I only had one small run that is sometime hard to find... Gary

  23. KISS even had a comic that had ink containing some of their blood. Just to seem a bit hardcore, right? BTW, what do/did KISS and A. Hitler have in common? They both practiced their stage moves in front of a mirror. No joke. True story.

  25. The kg1 is not even in the same level of a speaker. The KI-102 has a 8” woofer and a 1”3/4 titanium compression horn driver It’s made for medium size movie theaters The ones I had come from the I-max theater in Orlando and one set was from the Hard Rock Cafe of Orlando Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  26. i agree that looked great. specifically, i was thinking about those that want grilled onions over raw onions on a burger or hot dog or sandwich. I like the taste of onions and i think there is more flavor in a raw onion.

  30. Heavy cast iron frying pan $29.99. Baker's rolling Pin $25.99. Tillamook Yogurt $0.92 The look on the little woman's face if you brought these 'Cornwall copies modified with other components' home - Priceless! I'd say they look like you'll have to commence a running if you were to haul them home. Bobbing and weaving so she can't get in a good shot with both that frying pan and her adrenaline up! Wb

  32. I bought the wife a Lodge Frying Pan and Hibachi BBQ. Made in the USA and the wife can't throw either without hitting her own foot first. She has a baker's rolling-pin but I can move pretty quickly still. When in doubt; follow August Escoffier or Julia Childs recipes. Like falling off a log, unless you go to great lengths to burn everything you cook. Point at something on the menu. They have pictures in the IHOP I was last at. Also, while pointing; rub your stomach. The server will figure it out. Failing that, if desperation sets in, I'd go for a military meal... ready to eat. Pretty difficult to screw that up. Wb

  33. I think you'd have to start with the Heritage Series, if you're looking for that break point. That heart and soul will be found in the efficiency, and the horn loaded drivers, and the two go hand in hand. You mentioned you can't fit LaScalas; then you probably can't fit Cornwalls because they are even wider, albeit just about an inch. So stop dreaming about them! If you're willing to buy new, get the new Heresy IV. Rumor has it, it will be available at the end of the month. Otherwise, the Heresy III is insanely efficient and will beat the pants off any speaker similar in size. Similar size to the kg4's- find a pair of Quartets. Willing to go just slightly larger-if you want legendary, get a pair of Forte's, which are probably Klipsch's most popular, and affordable speaker.

  34. Should've known Mr. Bonehead wasn't really asking a question here, but rather making a point. Upon further testing, I noticed that lining up the tweeter with the horn diaphragm, while making a big improvement in sound, does cause reflections from the top of the cabinet that cause destructive interference at positions in front of the speaker. Further testing will show if there is a way to get the best of both worlds. I don't think padding or insulation will work. Maybe a structure of some sort... While I mentioned that in this thread before he did, I'm not claiming to posses as much knowledge / experience as he. That information should rightly be considered as so much "low-hanging fruit." Same for: Yes to this for sure. I feed my Xilica from a Presonus mixer. It is a balanced connection. The mixer is capable of putting out +24dBu. I still have the input channel gains up all the way (+15dB) on the Xilica. This gets the input meters to flicker occasionally but only at loud levels. ... If one doesn't make large use of the available bit-depth, they're really limiting themselves to the equivalent of lesser equipment. It'd be better to flirt with bouncing off the ceiling than playing mainly on the floor.

  37. I have a pair of Brand X speakers next to the K-horns for occasional comparison and demonstration purposes. They measure a fairly flat frequency response and sound nice, but when doing an A-B test between the Brand X (subwoofers ON) and the K-horns (subwoofers OFF) at matched SPLs, the K-horns sound more lively and musical. The Brand X don't get played much. When the volume goes up, the Klipsch have the huge efficiency advantage and there is no fair comparison.
