  9. Back from the MacDude! Sounds great, looks great and the price was right. Now where to put it. Couple ideas but I still need that extra inch or two. I'm stumped but not stumped. @KROCKI think I'm gonna wire up those old Marantz Electrostatic headphones. Cross your fingers!

  10. Price and condition should be highest priority. There are many modifications available to improve the I and II. And let’s not forget they’ll probably go up in value over time especially for the nicer veneers. I have both, but never tried an A B comparison since my II are upgraded it wouldn’t be fair to the I. Either way you are sure to be pleased.

  11. Terrific price for what appears to be New Old Stock. But they're improved also! Having lived in Orange, Volusia & Brevard counties in the 90s I would have driven down for these if I could have. GLWYS!

  12. At least you are seeing both locally. Either one should do you if condition and price right.

  13. The weather app on my phone Hyperlocal Weather has been telling me "Heavy Rain" from sometime when I'm asleep until lunchtime. Think apple think they will be right more often than not by doing that! It's connected with DarkSky.

  14. Glad I mowed yesterday. They were calling for afternoon rains so I knocked it out in the morning and finally got a decent shower a few minutes ago with more cells coming thru later. Typically a day late and dollar short from the "weather" teams. lol Nice and cool now so gonna warm up the tubes and dive into this stack of unopened vinyl. Oh wait, haircut in an hour. Doesn't take long to cut a block though.

  15. IMO, They'll go quick at $1,200. (maybe $1,500 to the right buyer) Factory full grills on the LaScalas were kinda rare. What's your location? Post them here in the garage sale section for sure!

  16. I’ll second that. Mine aren’t for sale.

  17. Was a nice day here, too. Rained good. Over an inch. 75 - 80` with enough humidity to make a cold drink sweat. Haven't listened to much music. With the power going off and on....Listening to the toads is music. I still find it amazing that amphibians can make it here.

  18. I've put a LS in that spot and it was very nice but didn't make as much of a difference as I thought it would. The K500 mid horn in the Belle is considerably smaller than the K400 is the LS. The difference between the K500 to the K700 in that Heresy is probably about the same. All had the same mid driver and tweeter. I am not really good at critical listening though. I know crap when I hear it, but subtle differences are lost on these old ears. I guess my point is, if you don't have the room or budget for a LS or third Belle, you wont suffer much if you have to use a Heresy.

  21. Opinions. All opinions. Here’s mine. Laser badge era=higher collectibility (opinion) (to some) Sequential serials? Crites vs. JEM. If your pockets are deep enough you can have both and see which one you like best. Can you solder? I have used both with great results, but it comes down to what end you desire. Listen a while before you decide. You may just not care because you think they sound wonderful. Are all the corners sharp? All labels intact? How’s the finish? Has anyone “varnished” them (hehe)? All of this is important. The price isn’t bad if all is good. Start counting scratches. How are the grills? Every nick, scratch, bump, chip, snag are deductions. Reality is none of this matters if they sound like crap. Personally I would consider maybe $700 for a near mint pair, but I have 2 pair already.

  22. Holy Moley, almost 10 years ago I just wanted to update this because at the time I had not heard a 9090 for a very long time. This thread popped up in a totally different web search so I just wanted to update it. I have since acquired some old radios, Pioneer, Kenwood, Sherwood, Marantz and some Sansui's. One being a 9090, in very nicely kept condition. I can add to this thread that there is NO COMPARISON in sound or output in the Denon and Sansui. They are so far apart they can't even be compared .The Sansui has a lush, full top to bottom, powerful sound I instantly recognized. No Denon, HK, Onkyo,Yamaha, Marantz modern avr I ever owned could compare. I wouldn't trade the 9090 for every avr I ever owned in a pile if I could not have the 9090. I've never owned a unit that brought me so much musical joy over the past year. There is not many over the past 25 or so years I have not owned in the mid fi mrkt, below 3k. I only wish I would have bought a 9090 decades ago....

  29. @Dave MacKay I own V1 and a pair of the V1.5 so called but not named by Klipsch because they used components from both V1 and V2. I have not heard V2. I’d go for whatever set you find that is the best deal, however you define that. One small bit to consider is that if you want to update drivers or crossover, the V1 back panel is removable making access to all internals very easy. You can chase individual drivers if you want, eg K-55 vs K-53 mid range etc, but unless you really want to get inside, I’d buy the best sounding and cosmetic set you can afford and sit back and enjoy them. Set on CAM right now in Peterborough for $800, no affiliation.

  30. Nice set up , I love the Heresy , used one as center for my Khorns a long while ago, it offered a very good timbre match , but dynamic qualities made them a bit less than a perfect match for my taste. It was only when I went Lascala center that I was truly satisfied , not to discount your opinion at all , Heresy does work.đŸ€“

  31. Never noticed much of a issue with using an HIP for a center between my Belles. Sounded fairly nice to me. The subs helped to not notice the reduction of bass (I guess)

  32. I have a AV8802a and it is an excellent unit. Good DACs and discrete buffers on the XLR outputs. Good luck with the sale.

  33. Get your AVR hooked up to your speakers and subwoofer, run the Audyssey set-up and then listen for a while. You might be satisfied with that alone. An external amplifier may not be needed, unless you want to play it really loud.

  36. I know a lot of guys using these as LCR behind AT screens in mid to large HT spaces. These are true cinema series. The manufacturer supplies tons of free information on their products, including these. Want free software for you planning and design? Got that. Need tech sheets? Got you covered. Want polar plots? All there.

  39. lol, I wasn't singling you out, it was in reference to everything on that particular page - there were several long posts. Many examples of transfer functions in that document. "A filter is a circuit whose transfer function, that is the ratio of its output to its input, depends upon frequency." https://ecstudiosystems.com/discover/textbooks/basic-electronics/filters/transfer-functions/ If your question is "how much", I would say enough to hear it, and everyone has to make up their own mind whether it's an issue for them or not.

  40. Think of it this very simple way. Each speaker has an output at a certain input of power. So let's say that at 1 watt the drivers each have the following output: Woofer 97 db Mid-range 108 db Tweeter 104 db So with the above, you need to 'turn the volume down' on the midrange and tweeter to match the woofer. Changing the caps with less resistive caps 'lets more sound through' so the highs are louder, making the woofer 'turned down' by comparison at any given power input.

  41. If you’re using a nice 2-channel tube power amplifier for your left and right speakers, keep it simple and just use the centre channel speaker connectors for your centre La Scala/Heresy/whatever. If your receiver is just driving 1 channel, it will have plenty of power and its best possible bass output. While we like to have the very best possible sound when listening in 2-channel stereo, the centre channel is not as crucial. Do you need to hear every detail in an actor’s voice? You’ll be hearing it with a really good centre speaker, so you should be fine. Sure, you could go for a 2nd external amp to power the centre channel, but I’d suggest using the receiver’s amp for a while and seeing if you like it. Then, if after a month or so you’re not satisfied with the sound of the dialogue, then look into a centre channel power amp, but until then don’t obsess over it. You don’t need to have everything the first day. Your system will change over time. For example, one day you’ll get a new receiver for some new type of connectivity or source that’s not even invented yet, but your La Scalas will never become obsolete. I’m using modded 2007 La Scala IIs for Main Left & Right, a Belle Klipsch for Centre, and 1974 La Scalas for Surround. Only the LS2s are powered by external amps. The rest of the speakers are powered by the AVR, a 2016 Yamaha RX-A2060, and it all sounds fine. BTW, most Heritage Series speakers are priced singly, so buying a single shouldn’t mean any special ordering.

  42. Then there was the time the Freak Brothers formed a band. They dressed up all futuristic and stood up a steel bed frame on the stage for style. They hooked up a big amplifier to it for effect, but to their surprise it worked as a big antenna and sent deadly energy waves at the audience and killed them all. As soon as they realized what had happened, the Bros sneaked off stage quietly and made their escape. It was one of the Freak Brothers’ darkest moments...

  44. geoff, it sounds like you’re thinking of the various possibilities, but as you say, you might as well spend some time getting used to your MWMs before picking up a saw, assuming that ever becomes a logical step for you. I started off with a pair of old La Scalas, then I discovered the madness of the Forum, and things got weird. I was up to ten Heritage Series speakers for a while, until I sold a pair of Heresy IIs to an up-Island (for us here, up-Island means North of wherever you might be on the Island, Victoria in my case) Forum member, who’s very happy with them. What I mean is that this is the greatest bunch of enablers I’ve ever seen. “You’re not sure where you want to spend your money? Well, we can help you with that.” To be fair, I’ve often been one of those enablers myself. Yes, May Two-Four would be an auspicious date to have your MWMs ready for action, and fully dialled in a bit later. Are you far from Molson Park in Barrie? Do they still have the Canada Day Festival there? I rode up there on my bike with my teenage daughter in 1991 for the event, with Violent Femmes, Crash Test Dummies, Teenage Head, and more. We had a great time. I could imagine you getting a call from them on Canada Day 2022, going something like, “Oi! Turn it down! You don’t have to play them at 11, you know!”

  45. On Newfoundland, Canada’s big island province off (way off) the East Coast, they sometimes use beer as a unit of distance, as in “Yer drives East for three beers, then yer turns North and goes for two beers, and there ya be!” All said in a thick sort-of-Irish accent. No disrespect to Newfoundlanders intended. That’s where most of our comedians come from.
