  2. Weird, but I dig trains! I live a couple hundred yards from BNSFs busiest eastbound track out of the port of Los Angeles. Trains run all the time. I especially like the sound very late at night. I like environmental sound in general. This is one of my many Tascams.

  3. Crites, me and Al have been building for almost 20 years. And again, people who mod know the mods aren't "Klipsch approved", and they don't care.

  4. I started my home recording journey with Tascam 4-Track cassette and a Virtualizer. I feel in love with the sound of analog cassette. It is so natural sounding! Anyway, I then moved into LogicPro X DAW with a zillion belles and whistles, and some of the magic disappeared. I'm kind of heading back toward cassette. @Racer X Well, All those guitars are replacements for Apple, Walmart, and Costco stock I was holding. There's only 2 that i regularly play. Just a few months ago I sold my precious Martin Joan Baez Special Edition 0-45 which was the Queen of the collection. I was afraid that i might drop it if I played it, which would ruin the MINT condition, and felt that keeping such a fabulous guitar out of playing hands was sinful. A guy wanted it to play, and he had the $$$$ to pay, off it went.

  5. Ha! I clicked on my pic and can see why you said that. Those are the last t-shirt thin 501s that I bought in `14 or `15. Wear jeans for about a week before I wash them. Have a couple 22 oz Brave Star that are almost as thick as jeans are supposed to be. They say they're Straight Leg but they are kinda skinny and my hide has gotten slack a little the last decade...

  6. I like this guy's style. He's got a nice converted barn for music, and a Binaural head to record them playing. Doesn't waste words either. 👍

  7. Ha ha, relatable. I build for the therapy I get from it. Now, I do keep a matrix in my head of what might work best for what a person is after.

  8. Henry asked for my opinion about sharing a cathode resistor between the two output channels. Well, I have never tried it! I imagine it would result in a little crosstalk between the channels which, depending on the result one is looking for, may not be bad in that it could provide a tighter center image than dual mono would provide. It may be similar to using a shared B+ rail to feed both output xfmrs ( there was a big discussion about this on DIY audio maybe 8-9 years ago which I will try to find). Another consideration is what would happen if one tube gets weak or craps out. Remember, the value of the shared cathode resistor is half of that for a single channel. So, if the current through it decreases significantly, the bias will be off. For the minimal difference in cost, I don’t see the point of not using separate resistors and caps. Regarding AC vs. DC input coupling, I have always favored the former after encountering devices with leaky output coupling caps spilling DC. Also, my preferred driver is a grid leak biased triode which, of course, requires AC coupling. The 6SJ7 can be biased that way as well although I have not yet tried it that way. If anyone wants to build but finds chassis prep to be more than they want to tackle, the Spudkit may be a nice alternative. Spud amps have the advantage of only using a single amplifying device per channel. I have done a lot of work with pentode and triode spuds and elimination of a driver tube can result in some amazing sound, especially if speaker impedance variations are controlled in the pentode units (a 27 ohm resistor across the speaker terminals is all that is needed). https://spudkit.com/ Enough rambling for today (my wife thanks Henry for convincing me to spend a few minutes on here- she thinks I don’t have enough to do 😬 Maynard

  10. Still very good. My impression is that they sound to me to be clearer, more spacious and easier to listen to when I turn them up a little. Very detailed.

  11. Ya I definitely think the RC7 is an incredible speaker but the tone difference in the horn across the fronts is huge. It isn't horrifically noticeable as generally voice doesn't move from center to the sides.

  12. um, because jem wasnt available until just recently & everyone raved about crites prior to that, even mr randy has said crites are great caps/crossovers before jem came out, but those comments have probably been edited or lost in the 60k+ posts... being on a budget & for middle of the chain klipsch speakers i bought used, crites was too expensive then & especially now... a 3uf sonicap is like $60 direct from sonicraft! daytons, erse & others have pretty much stayed the same price, maybe a couple dollars more, crites also now offers daytons for budget minded people. & the "authorized" thing, some want an upgrade from the stock sound or to use an alternative thats priced better. one of my questions was comparing jem to other same type PE caps... why are jem so much more expensive (ive seen $40-60 for a pair of fortes that are just 4 film caps & 2 lytics), all other PE caps are less than $1ea & are likely the same quality, possibly better. ive asked for some basic details on that or comparison to other PE caps, but i understand klipsch probably isnt going to comment on that one.

  13. Klipsch making those parts available is a fairly recent thing. Most people recapped or rebuilt long before that choice was open to them - and some won't do it anyway.

  15. The thoughts crossed my mind a lot quicker than it took to type it. But why do they have that crinkly finish kind of like acid wash? I never saw that putting them on. Maybe because I did not put them in the freezer then take a tire brush to them to clean then Whoever put that on a tag on them ain't right in the head, I digress:

  18. I’ve got the bass bins painted and started to reinstall the trim. Just a word of advice, don’t take the trim off. It was a total pain. I didn’t realize that it was glued along with all the screws. I ended up using plastic trim tools, razor blade and small finishing hammer to get it off. I patched all the holes so the screws would have something to catch when I reinstalled the trim. Also using adhesive as Klipsch did from the factory. They are turning out really nice. I’ve had a few larger sets of Klipsch pro speakers, but these splits are just so cool. Really enjoying the process.

  24. Howdy. Shawn in Pearl, MS. Brand spanking newbie.....so happy to have found this forum people.......just wish I had landed on the site many years ago. Owner of a much loved pair of "R" era Heresy's that I picked up at a garage sale waaaaaayyyyyy back in 1996 I think....$60 dollars for the pair, beat up a bit and the K22s were shredded by kids or a cat, but otherwise original and funtional. I will never forget hearing them for the first time.....The Police, Zenyatta Mondatta album, vinyl, through a Pioneer solid state amp circa 1980s I think. Even in their semi-delapidated state, I had never heard such clear and accurate frequency representation and separation. Of all the audio gear that has come and gone in my life since, I have kept the Heresy's. Wanted to say Hello and share my probably pretty typical story with you folks........more to come from me as I am now in the process of restoring them and will want and need advice from experts on this forum. Thanks.

  25. To bad the videographer didn't give a little time to the art on the walls. From what I can see, some of it looks interesting and rather good. Nice to have such a big space. Never was that fortunate.

  26. Dunno. The biggest tonal difference would be between your SS-1s and everything else and not between the rc-7s and KLF-20s, I would think. Not knowing which AVR you have, possibly Audyssey (or other EQ program) addresses any possible mismatch you're hearing on test tones. Anyway, good luck in troubleshooting and if it sounds fine with material you may already be good to go.

  27. Anyone know a source for these? I am looking to buy and /or make 3 horn brackets to sit on top of some KPT LF cabinets. I have seen some boxes built but I would like to angle these slightly. These would go behind a screen so it's not a beauty contest.

  28. Just checked that spud kit Maynard is talking about. Looks really good for a first time builder of a tube amplifier. Much simpler than sourcing all the parts like I, and other experienced builders, do. Have to sound good. Never heard a bad sounding tube amplifier. Good place to start your diy tube amplifier building. $450 for kit. https://spudkit.com/?page_id=13

  29. The RC7 is one of the best reference speakers ever to me. I sold ,at one time, all my reference speakers, but could not part with the RC7, I bought another. I used the RC7 with 20's and 30's. But if your ears tell you different that's all that matters.

  30. Correct. I have cleaned many of those relays even some sealed ones. Cut them open with a hacksaw and then glue them back together. Hard to find a direct replacement. Better to try and clean but one must be sure the relay is the problem and not the relay doing it's job protecting the speakers from a problem in the receiver, amp.

  31. I'm in full agreement about hearing and our age, as long as it's low levels my hearing is still fairly good but I think I just care less about chasing the dragon. I'm happy if it sounds good and that's good enough. I just like to fiddle with electronics and get my geek on. I suspect it's the physical construction properties causing the sonic difference between metalized and foil. They are physically much different and I'm almost certain the foil will have higher series inductance since the metalized achieves greater capacitance given the same amount of film due to greater surface area coverage and getting the plates much closer together. Type of leads factors in also etc... The parasitic properties is what can drive you bonkers when comparing capacitor types. I usually draw out an equivalent model of a capacitor and all it's properties and then fill them in as I measure each property. I may still have some old papers with measurements but they won't be for capacitors you guys are using, they would be for capacitors of long ago. Mostly the change between paper and film and the hybrid "di-films" was when I was very interested in this stuff. Then progressing and getting Tantalum or other polymer types to attain a reference book where if I needed a certain property for a given application I can quickly flip through the book and find what I needed. The datasheets from the companies just were not enough information sometimes to make a thorough model of the circuit.

  33. I tried beating them off with a piece of wood and hammer, but they wouldn’t budge. I was afraid I would splinter the wood if I kept at it. The plastic pry tools worked really well. It was just very time consuming.

  35. billybob - thanks for the response and helpful info! I will see what they might have. It's a small victory this morning - but I just managed to get a new power indicator bulb soldered into the L-11 and it's good to see it light up at power on again.

  36. I took DaveA's advice and placed a block of wood alongside the trim and used a hammer to break the adhesive bond to separate the trim from the cabinet. Easy peasy. I elected not to use adhesive when reattaching the trim as they'll no longer get the rough handling that a pair of true road speakers would.

  37. RF7III and RP8000 speakers are really good speakers , but speakers with small distances between drivers , like coaxial speakers in particular ,may hold some advantage for nearfield listeners. Move away from nearfield and problems go away .

  43. Yes, the Zerostat gun is a must-have. It’s useful for other things, too, like getting those pesky little bits of Styrofoam off your clothes after you’ve been cutting some of the stuff. Give them a blast of ions and much of it will fall off, then you can pick off the rest of it without it flying back onto your clothes. You can also make charged balloons fall off the wall. I got my Zerostat gun used about 15 years ago and it still works great. Yes, the vinyl tea ceremony. Another way to look at it is this: popping in a CD/DVD/Blu-Ray disc is like using a microwave, while playing an LP is like using a barbecue. More work, but more soul.
