  1. Yes, they helped a great deal. The risers got the HF cabinets to ear height. That put the MF/HF horns on-axis vertically with my listening position. The rear La Scala now sound better, and the rear soundstage height seems correct. It was a larger improvement than I was expecting. I'm hearing things I've never noticed before in the rear channels of some multichannel recordings. On one live jazz SACD the echo of the upfront instruments off the back wall of the club is noticeable and very realistic. It was definitely worth the expense/effort. (Yes, I fixed the speaker cable after taking the pictures. I needed to free some wire slack behind the equipment rack first.)

  3. Ooooh! Number 2 son is in LaPorte. He went to Valparaiso and ended up marrying into the community. We like spam, too, and the lower sodium version is still pretty good. Of course most Filipinos are ok with spam, unless they are totally turning their backs on the culture. (Even though the spam arrived with our troops...)

  5. This is an amplifier I built many years ago but in what I call my test wood box containing the power supply section and transformer. Most of the Firstwatt projects use the same voltage PS which makes this possible. I have been using a test box to determine if I want to make a complete amplifier from a new design with boards when a new project is introduced. If I like the sound of the new project I give the boards a proper home. After listening to this amplifier for many years in it's ugly wooden case I decided to fork over the money for a proper chassis. I bought this chassis almost 6 months ago intending to finish it then but other projects got in it's way. All I did is move the heatsinks with the boards attached into a newly built PS section and with an old 500VA 18v Antek transformer I had in stock. Overkill on transformer but workable. Some may consider even better. This SE Aleph J is one of my favorite SS amplifiers.

  6. Did it. Have some skill if you wish to attempt it all on your onesie... I took my time and had the usual frustrations with little silly things. The autoformer loves to be in the way every time you turn the board over - I didn't really wish to de-solder either it or the hook-up to the terminal cup. I've only performed it on one speaker thus far, and can't claim to hear a difference - not nearly as much as when I Crites-ed my Fortes several years ago. I chose to go factory with this re-cap, since I wasn't familiar with the Chorus II "sound" (that, and the $500-plus cost of the Crites boards is currently a little off-putting). A before-and-after comparison of frequency sweeps using ARC Genesis doesn't show much change either... my guess is that the original caps were still within spec. I at least have the satisfaction of knowing it's doable, and that these caps should be good for quite a while. Not sure it was worth taking up most of a morning of a day off, but now I know.

  8. I just sold my upgraded Merlin (Super Merlin) and a pair of NOS Valves VRD amps to a fellow member here a while back. It was a great little preamp for me, but I had/have too much gear and needed to sell. Good luck with your search Mark. I loved that little Super Merlin preamp. Cute as a button and always sounded great when I fired it up.

  10. Agreed, that is indeed a fair price for a nice pair of speakers. GLWS and good luck with the khorns.

  13. Hi, I recently purchased "the One II" from Joe's Audio in the UK. I can connect different devices and stream audio through it no problems. The volume dial, however, never seems to do anything. I tried the reset function but the 10 second reset also did not seem to do anything. The power switch and little LED light indicating power on is working. I can control the volume on my device (e.g. iphone or Mac) but the volume dial never does anything. I have checked all our devices to make sure only one device is connected. Still no luck. Help would be appreciated, Thanks, Patrik

  14. Not quite as clean a job as the man Dean Wescott, but my thanks to him for all the tips and investigative work. It would sure be nice if the company could source some radials to take the place of the two originals on this board, but it is what it is...

  15. I would be more than happy, but I already have been thru Onkyo <-- what my 7s were originally hooked up to and same result. I can stand in the four corners of the room and it sounds correct. Anywhere other than four corners and you get a little thud instead of nice sounding bass.

  16. Yes, all complete. I'm very technical person. Know that system in and out. I honestly think its placement. It was same way with old Onkyo receiver. I get bass while standing in the corners. <-This is exact reason I feel like its total room acoustical issue. Just man what a pain re-doing the whole room. But in the end may be rewarding.

  19. billybob you are obviously awesome! I really do appreciate your reply above. I did order and receive the actual Klipsch driver directly from Klipsch yesterday. Installed it and the sub is just like brand new again. The sub driver ( brand new model sw311 driver) was very well/safely packaged and was sent out soon after I ordered. Jan 4 to arriving early afternoon Jan 9, including the weekend. 3 business days. Cannot get better than that! Once again...Klipsch handled business! 👌 Take care Billybob ~Mike

  20. Even only if were 50 watts, you and All around will know even 3 Inches from the wall when the bass kicks in.

  22. Haven't moved them yet. Probably gotta order some more cables. Only have six footers. If I'm pulling them out. Gotta bring them closer together. Always something.

  23. I think it's more important for the speakers to be of equal distance to your ears. You won't be able to hear the difference 2" to the wall makes, but I am pretty sure you'll hear a difference of one speaker being 2" closer to your listening seat. I am very anal about speaker placement and go to great lengths to get it right.

  24. @Marvel A regular Baby, model BT1 in walnut/spruce. It sounds like a small guitar. Almost everything sounds like a small guitar compared to the 310. The baby obviously doesn’t have the low end that my dreadnoughts have and it doesn’t growl as much as the Sapele when you really dig in. I was initially torn between the Baby Taylor and one of the Little Martin models but once I played them side by side I just couldn’t stand the countertop laminate look of the fake wood grain on the HPL used in the Martin. Also where the Little Martin had a little more low end I felt like it overall lacked some clarity compared to the baby Taylor. I would be surprised if the sound didn’t open up a little more as it gets played over the coming months. It’s interesting to note that they have changed the bracing and construction a little since the first gen Baby Taylor that AG had. They no longer use the half hoop brace from the neck block to the sides. Its been quite a while but my impression is that the newer bracing makes the guitar seem lighter. all in all I suppose some sound samples are in order.

  27. I have built all of the Firstwatt clones. Some are just boards now taken out and replaced with some other boards I like better. This Aleph J is one of my favorites, single ended which is also my favorite type of amplification. Very tube like sound. At the present time I have 6 complete up and running Firstwatt clones. The boards taken out and replaced just from memory are the F6, F5 and a version of the F7. Nothing wrong with these three, they just are not my cup of tea with horns.

  28. I haven't heard any other H1's except these. I did listen to some new IV's recently and they sounded phenomenal. I own/owned RP-160M's, KG4's, Quartets, H1's and a set of CF1's. I didn't like the CF1's and sold them pretty quickly without trying to do anything to improve them. I still own all the others. All of the others sound good to very good except the H1's are off kilter. Someone on one of the FB Groups said that the gaskets were a problem on theirs, so I have a set on order. I've had them on three different receivers. Pioneer SX-650, Realistic STA-2300 and Sony DA3ES.

  29. Whoa! I had to read back thru to remember what I was doing at this point in history. So I don’t remember giving the k55v on adapters enough listening time to give a review. What I ended up with is a pair of (I think) k-301 horns which are pretty much identical to k-61 horns except they are threaded and the k55v mounts right up. I really like them in this setup and believe that there was a definite improvement. I would think something is wrong with your k55 if they sound bad, possibly diaphragms, but idk, I think Crites talked about this topic some on his website. I’m not sure if you want to throw parts around, but I’d say leave your quartets as they are since you’re happy with them. Investigate the k55 to see what might be wrong with them. Have you heard other Heresy you liked? Maybe that sound isn’t for you? Also, what are you driving them with? Mark

  30. ~$350 shipped. Today everywhere you look back to MSRP of 599 or just under. I wish I had snagged the surf green Jazzmaster and ruby metallic Strat with block inlay neck too. All the 40th versions have lots to offer. I'm pretty impressed with the quality and playability. Hope the feeling sticks around beyond the new gear syndrome timeframe.

  34. I have one set of Khorns separated 23' with a center channel in about a 7' high room, and another set separated 20' in a 10' high room. Both sound excellent, the set with a center channel having a very awesome 3-dimensional sound. If I were getting a subwoofer too, I'd forget the Lascala's and get the Khorns. You'd be much better off.

  36. Great, detailed review! Interesting that you prefer the lower output setting. As long as you enjoy it, good for you. The fact you noticed a difference just by adding the kg SW to the Heresies says the sub is no fluke but a real addition. The kg SW in my basement system has the ports facing the room. I tried them facing the wall but I'm within a couple inches and figured that was too close, without the option to move it away from the wall, and I couldn't tell the difference in sound anyway. But I certainly can tell the difference without the passive sub. It magically turns Heresies into full-range speakers without the higher end Heritage prices. I like the fact it actually high passes a signal to the satellites rather than a passing a full range signal. Those people at Klipsch are smart.

  40. I have tried it on Full and small with crossover down to 60 when set to small. Make no difference. I get zero thump on the RF7s. If i stand behind them I get bass, but anything in my listening position is null. I have a slight toe in to point to listening position.

  43. Carver makes some excellent products at their price points like all equipment it comes down to system synergy and personal taste. Yes he has used gimmicky language in his marketing that doesn't mean what he sells is junk. Fact is Carver made an absolute mockery of the golden ear audio industry some 40 years ago in the Carver challenge proving 100% you do not need a "top product" for good sound and people are still butt hurt to this day either because it shattered their illusions at the time or they've read the fall out after the fact.

  45. Thanks for the information. In Florida so understand about surges, etc. Klipsch has a couple of more subs that punch above their 8 inch size from abit back. Your 311 was not familiar with. Yes you are doing well in that department. Also, hope you can reconnect with members from before I even knew of a Klipsch forum. Nice to speak with you.

  46. The Belle looks so cute in there.. Wow.. Talk about dwarfed!!!!! There is some content that can't sound good because it isn't good. I don't think you can fix it with EQ. I have learned to live with it. These things are true to your source material like nothing else. A good problem to have me thinks. Congrats again. Just an amazing setup.
