  1. I started a thread in tubes last week about the impending arrival. Well it landed yesterday and it deserves a new thread. I was a little apprehensive about 8 watts. I've never owned anything so measly. Well I couldn't have been more wrong about that. This thing has balls for days along with the delicacy that the 300B is known for. I only got to listen for about an hour last night, but wow, very impressive. I'm sure much of this performance can be attributed to Aric's design and his overbuilt power supply. Glad to be in the DHT camp now. I will post more about how it compares to the PP EL84 amp I have been using after I've had more listening time. In the pic below, the PS is on the rack behind the amp, tethered with two umbilical cables.

  3. I was trying to get some old photos together and realized how much better a lot of my older pictures were when I used a camera and not my cell phone. It may be also that I was shooting film and really needed to think about the shots before hitting the button. I hope Josh doesn't mind the pics of his mom. ]

  8. Nice work. Same is ahead of me. I'm not yet decided on grain layout but I'm more leaning towards this one which mimics original plywood layout. For me it will be american walnut for sure. But for face I'm planning to use more flat looking pieces and for edges those with dense grains.

  18. I again will politely disagree and feel they ARE independent journalism. They were critical of government within a year of 9/11, openly seemed to criticize Obama Foreign Policy (all though they gave room for debate in both) and every administration since and after.

  21. Right. Well known problem globally. I've been following Dr. Robert Listing for years. He was among the first to declare sugar a toxin---based on metabolic science. Processed food is deadly, and the long tail of it is clearly visible now in many countries. I was once a processed food junkie. It might not meet the technical definition of addiction, but functionally it is the same.

  22. Where we will disagree about YouTube censorship being a shortcoming, DW News and PBS Frontline make excellent documentaries and are Govenment subsidized. I watch these and others regularly on YouTube and don't feel the need for a subscription service. That said, I watched this while doing dishes and while good, we've known this for decades and it is interesting seeing how Europe and Mexico are dealing with the problem we've been exporting.

  25. I used it for everything but the mahogany trim for the build that I detailed elsewhere. It takes about 5 days to cure, but then it is quite durable. I then clear coated it with automotive 2K poly, but it probably wasn’t absolutely necessary.

  26. When I lived in FL I use to look for street vendors in and around Ebor City (which is surrounded by Tampa) where they make some of the best dang smoked mullet ever. But down here in S. Texas they don't eat mullet. I guess it's a different kind but I don't really know sure. They sure look the same though.

  27. I used Benjamin Moore “Advance” Interior Alkyd paint (black, in “Pearl” finish) for the doghouse of my La Scalas. Because I didn’t have a paint sprayer, I brushed it on. It was an excellent match for the Rustoleum Satin “Canyon Black” spray paint that I used on the tweeter and squawker horns. I’m pleased with how it turned out. Benjamin Moore paints are very good.

  34. Yea, had the entire right side of the garage sittin in the driveway yesterday. Talk about a hoot? I paced myself well spending time sittin and thunkin HOW I could get it all back in to make it easier to get out and use. Factor in my hoarding? WHY did I have a stack of about 25 empty cardboard lp boxes? Even found a new golf umbrella! I put it by my golf bag, which hasn't moved in 20 years. Crazy! 😂 Rolled out at 11 today totally drained and thought it was Thursday. 😂💪 Just take it easy with that 2nd wifey Bill. No hip thrusts when ur slow dancin. 39. If you can’t hear a difference, consider yourself money ahead and just relax and enjoy the cheapest one and sell anything else. As for me, I can hear it and have long since lost my way in the rabbit hole. There’s no hope for me, so save yourself……

  41. I always find it entertaining while reading through the many differing thoughts and opinions in some of these threads. My 2 cents about the passive comments of those being concerned about them not looking right... Well, the two times I really noticed my passive radiators on my Forte II's; 1) When I placed them in my system when I bought them 2) When I took them out of my system when I sold them I don't know how some of you are listening to your speakers with passive radiators, but sitting behind your speaker in a corner staring at the PR is not on my recommended list of ideal listening spots. Maybe you're on to something and I've been missing out? Just a though! Happy listening.

  42. My La Scalas were in similarly poor shape when I bought them. Now, in my opinion, they look great: My suggestions would be: 1) Since your cabinets don't look to be damaged (broken corners, loose plys, etc.) you could remove the drivers and crossover and strip the existing finish from cabinets. - Use bondo or wood filler to address any chips or other damage. - If, after those repairs, the cabinets look OK you could consider re-staining them. - If they don't look good enough, you could consider re-veneering ($$) or painting them. - Duratex is a tough black paint that will give an industrial look. But it's not for everyone. I didn't think that Duratex was appropriate for my room and used satin black brush-on paint from Benjamin Moore for the doghouse. - If you search this forum you'll see other finishes (e.g., a piano black glossy finish) that others have done. In my case, I added 3/8" baltic birch plywood to the sides, top, and bottom of the cabinets to address resonances and to provide a smooth surface for new veneer and then re-veneered the cabinets. I used Sapele veneer and Rubio Monocoat "Pure" as a finish. I thought that re-veneering the doghouse was beyond my ability so that I opted to paint it satin black. Although I did the veneering myself, I hired a painter to do the doghouse. 2) Get a can of Rustoleum satin black spray paint. Give the tweeter lens and squawker horn a light sanding and then re-spray them. You will likely find that a fresh coat of paint makes quite a difference in their appearance. 3) If it were me, I would recap the crossovers. Your La Scalas have AA crossovers, which are pretty good. However, caps go bad over time and yours are ~40 years old. It's time to refresh them. 4) Since your tweeters have been replaced with DE120s (which are excellent), I'd look at replacing the tweeter lenses (horns). Since this forum doesn't permit discussion of modifications, you might want to visit the "Klipsch Korner" on the Audiokarma forum for a more open discussion. 5) Replace the gaskets between the squawker drivers and the horns. Replacements are inexpensive and available directly from Klipsch. 6) Replace the gasket (looks like weatherstripping) on the access panel to the woofer. Over time the gasket can deteriorate and turn to goo. Refurbishing those speakers will be a fun project. Good luck!

  43. Here is a informative even if a commercial website where you can see a physical comparison of the fake Saratov Mullard vs. genuine old Mullard tubes. you can on the right part of the site also find an electrical comparison in an own article. https://www.effectrode.com/knowledge-base/mullard-ecc83-12ax7-reissue-vs-original-a-physical-comparison/ A little bit about the history of JJ from the same source as above. https://www.effectrode.com/news/tesla-heritage-jj-tubes-modern-tube-manufacturer/ Vita of Tesla company https://www.electron-tubes.cz/en/historie/ This article is very critical about JJ quality but it is a very informative read about Telefunken and Tesla tubes. I think that JJ is better then it is described in the article. https://www.jacmusic.com/techcorner/ARTICLES/English/Portraits/E83CC/ECC83-part-numbering1.html About bad copies of NOS tubes and how to identify them. https://www.jacmusic.com/nos/images/Fakes/index.html It doesn't get easier in orientation when old names resurface. This "Telefunken" brand seems to belong to a US company. The wensite is obviously a bit older. They claim that "their" Telefunken tubes are made at JJ. https://www.telefunken-elektroakustik.com/product-category/products/vacuum-tubes/ Was discussed critically https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/telefunken-tubes-being-reissued-by-jj.1404444/

  44. I agree, Henry. This discussion comes up again and again. I would like to contribute a little to sobering things up. With power amplifier tubes, it usually depends much more on the quality of the output transformer, and the intelligence of the circuit. Really "huge" sound differences can hardly be heard, apart from really junk. I wonder how many consumers here blindly adopt the marketing strategy of today's major tube manufacturer "New Sensor". New Sensor is an American marketing company in New York. If I may say so, it is fakenews. In the past, people used to say "badge engineering" for cars when another sticker implied it was a "better" car, but it was the same. New Sensor has bought up the trademark rights of time-honored big names. Gold Lion, Mullard, Tungsol, Svetlana and many more. The biggest difference and investment with this manufacturer is the different cardboard boxes these tubes are put in. These New Sensor tubes have NOTHING! to do with the old big brands. Absolutely nothing. 30 years ago there were two qualities of tubes from Russia. The good ones came from St. Petersburg and they were called Svetlana. The cheap ones came from the Saratov plant. They were called Sovtek. Svetlana has been bankrupt for 20 years. Unfortunately. Mcintosh had used them as an OEM. Today you have to search for NOS "Winged C" to find a real Svetlana. New Sensor also bought the trademark rights to Svetlana, which are also cheap and short-lived today. And where do you think all these fake old big brands are cheaply imitated ? In the Saratov factory, all on the cheap and quite short-lived standard of Sovtek. There is a big difference between, say, 1960 and today. At that time, the technology of the tubes was innovatively developed and refined. Today, new tubes are copied on worn-out ancient production machines without innovation. It helps when choosing a tube today if something is known about the history of a manufacturer. That's why I'm coming to JJ now. I am not related to the company or an employee. It is only my good experience as a consumer that I would like to share. JJ took over the machines and employees from Tesla after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. Czechoslovakia used to be one country. That changed 30 years ago. Today the Tesla company (still existing) is in Czech Republic, one of the two new small countries in the EU (Elon Musk had to pay a lot of money to be allowed to use this name for his car brand). Tesla makes innovative radar technology today and still builds very large transmitter tubes. They were the makers of very good audio tubes. When the decline of tube production started in Germany in the early 1970s, Telefunken sold all machines and know how to Tesla. That's why they had a fantastic KT88 EL 34 and many other power tubes on Telefunken machines. Especially the small tubes from Telefunken are very good. The innovation of Telefunken tension grid tubes E83CC, for example, Tesla continued to build in the same quality. Then the company JJ was founded in Slovakia. They took over everything from Tesla, the good quality of Telefunken machines etc. Out of a funny confusion about the names, nowadays the cheapest JJ ECC83 is of all things the famous tension grid tube, but that's just told in passing. I have always used with satisfaction the JJ KT88 on my MC275. It is crazy but it is the cheapest KT88 tube on the whole market, before the Ukraine war for 29€ to have, now of course a little more. What sources do we have today where tubes are produced: Except for a few very expensive exotics like Western Electric, only three. China, Saratov in Russia and JJ. The Chinese can also build ok tubes, but the dealers get about 30% scrap outside the tolerances from China. What does the dealer do to survive, he sells it on to the consumer as best he can. I have reported in detail about Saratov. That leaves only JJ. And of course NOS. Six years ago I bought very good Sylvania 12AX7 from 1960 in the USA for very little money. They were branded by an organ manufacturer, Baldwin. They play very nicely in my MC C22CE.
