  1. Greetings Triple C crew! It's my random drop in to say the coffee is good , the weather in south central Alaska is even better - low 60's and sunny today - and it's the start of a good week (I hope)! Have a great one! Enjoy your music and loved ones this week, I hate to hear of all the lives cut too short recently. Enjoy today!

  2. Met with fellow member DavidH to audition his awesome 5.1 HT on this past Saturday. David has K402s with K1132(?) drivers doing midrange duty on the L/R mains. This was my first experience with 402s. Wow. How accurate they sound and how wide the soundstage. David also has MWM clone bass bins(built just like DTEL'S I believe) on the L/R mains. Again wow, how effortless the bass sounded. We spent a good deal of our time together in 2.1(at my urging) so I could really take in the 402s and MWMs. The .1 was a Danley DTS 20, another wow, what a beast. Since it was all music(no movies) that things real potential was not completely demonstrated. David took some pictures of yours truly beside the Left main. I modeled my 70th Anniversary T. David's pix are from an Ipad, anyone feel free to rotate them please.

  10. Ok. Do you suggest any particular brand or model? Here's some REVIEWS I bought a Rocky Rancilio years ago as I needed something pretty precise for espresso. We use it mostly for brewed coffee now. It still works like it's brand new after god knows how many hundred pounds of beans have gone through it.

You can use whatever AVR you have now as the pre for it too if it has pre-outs. In the meantime, that 80 WPC will probably do you just fine.

  22. I've used pretty much every sub $20/ea banana plug option out there and I just recently found these on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Strike-Banana-7-Pair-Sewell-Direct/dp/B00VXQ972W?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00 They are small but they are solid and have a very good feel to them. If you are starting with bare wire these attach in seconds. They have a very low profile. FYI I'm using them with 14ga wire. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a small, simple, good quality plug.

  32. Surprised I am writing this. Much as I love my home town of Texarkana I'd not really gone out of my way to sample the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra as I did not expect much. I've been to many second tier city orchestra concerts and halls, including many much larger than Texarkana (150k metro) and been quite disappointed. Boy, was I surprised. I've known the hall, a former opera house and movie palace of the 1920s restored by Ross Perot, all my life As I child, I saw Ben Hur, the Ten Commandments, and many other films there sitting downstairs and feeling discriminated against as the balcony was reserved for African Americans who even had their own entrance. Then, it was seriously faded glory but I still marveled at what I saw and wondered what it looked like in it's prime. So, there I was, sitting in a choice cross aisle seat dead center in the formerly restricted balcony in the glorious restoration as Marc Andre Bougie, maestro, took the stage with his incredibly beautiful African American wife to experience the 10th anniversary of a symphony I never dreamed would exist. The opening number was called "Flourish," and was commissioned by the TSO from Clint Needham, Texarkana native and young composer whose fame is rapidly growing. Won't attempt to describe the music anymore than I would a painting, but it was fabulous. Next was the Beethoven triple concerto with three incredibly good soloists, tow playing 17th century instruments of great merit and the other the Steinway grand. Not a flubbed note anywhere or even more shocking, not a single burble French horn. Further, Maestro Bougie displayed both an extraordinarily entertaining conducting style and completely commanded the orchestra which stayed together with total precision...yet another rarity in second tier symphony orchestra. The Brahms First was equally executed with bravado and precision, the French horns, trombones, and clarinet providing equal to any cohesiveness and musicianship. 4 curtain calls and hoots of approval, including mine. Besides the above, I can state without reservation that the acoustics are superior to Jones Hall, home of the Houston Symphony, by a considerable margin. HVAC was totally silent as they preserved the original low volume, high mass system which is rare these days. There is one massive "rose" ornament over the orchestra seating the air comes from and two large, also ornamental, intakes back over the balcony. You can see some of this in the image. As Executive Director of the Regional Music Heritage Center I'll be working very closely with these people. I am not known for being able to cover my feelings about music or musicians and I am very relieved that my true opinion will be honest. Dave

  42. Get rid of the blender blade bean chopper and get a real burr grinder. With a true burr grinder, you can choose the size of your grounds and make them large enough to use a screen instead of a filter, so you get all the goodness of the oils in your cup. The choppers are not uniform and will make dust that will slip through a screen and make your coffee bitter! Rog

  45. I bought it new up in Marietta, but it was a 2015 model so I got $1400 off. $8100 out the door. Yeah, I rode the BMW up to the shovel. My son rode his vstrom. My son tried to lift a free end of one of the chain links and couldn't budge it. I was trying to find the strip mine lakes I had heard about all those years, so we went up some rutted out muddy roads. The tires I was sporting were 80/20, or pretty much street. They were down to the wear bars too. I slid around like I was on grease. My son took a video of me, but since he is kinda new on the adventure type bikes, he fell behind a bit. All in all, I am glad to have some tires now.

  49. with a retro brace job you are always more restricted than with a new build and you are generally working through driver cut outs. Hereis what I consider a minimum retro brace job for a cabinet suuch as the CF3/4. Baltic Birch ply or solid hard wood such as Oak Birch or Maple for the braces which will be 3/4"x2.5". The reason for these material choices is that you do want to keep your brace volume down and the stiffer the material that you uses the less you need to achieve your goal. The sides will have one vertical brace 3/4"x2.5" on edge vertically up the middle of the panel. The back baffle should have two of these one vertically on either side of the treminal cup. The top will have one brace from front to back. The front baffle should have a horizontal brace above and below each woofer. You can add additional braces and 45 degree wedges to insure the baffle is very rigid around each woofer. I generally leave the bottom of the cabinet open as many end up adding more serious after market crossovers and you will need a space to mount them and the bottom is a good place. Each brace should be fixed to its adajacent panel brace with at least two or three 1"x2" (actual dimension is 3/4"x1.5") stringes which can be made of pine or spruce (solid) the stringers tie the parts together so that the panels cannot expand or compress , in other words the panels can't bulge in any direction. Place stringers side to sideand front to back and dont forget the top and again leave the bottom open for future use. Where possibel contrive to have the stringers bond to one another where possibem and you will end up with a very well braced and stiffed cabinet with the absolute minimum quantity of material. I would say that what I have just described is likely considered by most as a "crazy" amount of brace work. Those people would be wrong. Those who advise that a non braced hollow cabinet was designed to be that way (short of BBC style cabinet designs which are a joke) do not have a clue and your BS alerts should go off when you hear such trash talk. If your cabinet walls move they are making noise (distortion). There are extreme instances where resonating cabinet panels have been measured and the total resonant cabinet output was higher in amplitude than the output of the woofer. Brace work matters. The very simple reason why you don't often see much of it in factory cabinets is cost. I hope that this is of interest and of use. Best regards Moray James.
