  8. I was not the only "worker bee" at K&A who PWK knew to a greater extent than a standard boss-employee relationship. It always seemed odd to me that almost NONE of the foremen had that going on...except the extreme "old-timers" remaining at the time, like Portis Gilley (who passed away while I was there), and N.W. Bradford (who was testing speakers before shipping when I was there). Mr. Bradford was one helluva mandolin picker, too! Others also got attention from PWK, normally the funny ones who had been sent during "slow times" to "do yard-work" at PWK's home, although most of their yard-work time ended up being swimming pool time in PWK's pool at PWK's insistence, ie., "Great job on the yard, no need to go back to the plant, since it is within three hours of quitting time...everybody just get into the pool and cool off...and head back to the plant in time to clock out....there is a chest of drawers with clean swimming suits for men and women, and a place to change into and back out of them", as PWK would often announce, once the yard-work was done...he would send the electric train out around the pool fence delivering cold "refreshments", too!

  9. I will continue to update! These are BBK long tubes that are designed for this application, but they just barely fit. I think there will be a mm or two between the driver's side and the steering shaft. Passenger's side is on

  14. You got it real bad. Did you kick the tires before all this work on the engine? I used to keep my 1969 427 GM aluminum block and heads in my bedroom for 10 years along with a huge load of other new GM parts. It had cast iron sleeves with heli-coiled bolt holes. I sold the hole bit to another guy in Michigan and he put all of it in his bedroom. You gotta love it. JJK

  15. It depends on what type of music you listen to and the size of the room the speakers will go in. If you like bass heavy music like Hip Hop or Electronic Music then you will most likely want a subwoofer to go with the La Scalas or you will notice a fairly pronounced lack of bass compared to your KLF-10s. For acoustic music and even rock and roll I typically turn my sub off with my LaScalas as the clean sound is more important than the lowest octave. What you will gain is a totally new sense of how you experience music. If set up properly, you will literally be able to close your eyes and 'see' people performing in your living room and hear tiny nuanced sounds like fingers sliding on a guitar fret board. The best way to describe it is with other speakers you hear a guitar, with LaScalas you hear someone PLAYING a guitar. I used to be big into Home Theater but since getting my LaScalas I now have it set up as an exclusive 2 channel rig. I still cant find a movie as compelling as listening to music on these speakers for hours. As for tube amps, I would say they are not needed. Many here love the synergistic effects of the tube reverb from the high efficiency speakers but I have not jumped on that wagon. My favorite combo is a high quality DAC with an integrated tube and a quality Class D amp. Class D is crystal clear when not driven hard and with my 20 watt Lepai I usually cant turn it past 25% without going into painful SPL levels. Personally, I would keep your sony and use it as a Pre-amp and have it run any surround channels etc then use the Pre-outs to run it into a Class D amp like one of these: https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-dta-120-class-t-mini-amplifier-60-wpc--300-3800

  16. Some very clean Quartets popped up today on CL in the town nearby and I'm picking them up this evening. I couldn't turn down $250 and this will help me decide if I still want to pursue a Chorus II or Forte II. I'm pretty pumped.

  20. Had an issue with one of the squawkers not firring but traced it down to a bad tinning of the 30mh coil. Sometimes I have a problem trying to articulate but here goes. The first overwhelming impression was as if the re caped stock xo had a restrictive grill on and we had removed it with the ALK xo. Not to say the former was bad but rather how much better the upgrade was. After listening for a while the detail and 3D sound became more and more evident . I really like the new sound this xo gives you. I tried to do an AB comparison but the (out of) phasing was unbearable. Guess it goes to prove that there are/were drivers out of phase and that was one of the things ALK was fixing. All in all it was worth the time and effort to build this, it was a rewording experience and looking forward evaluating this and future component upgrades as money allow. They sound bigger and fuller is another....

  26. Speaking of going off the floor, here are some pics of my Forte IIs modified to bring the mid / tweeter drivers to ear height. They also have Crites diaphragms and crossovers, along with one NOS K-25 I picked up off of eBay. It was still in factory wrapping! The trim piece around the bottom is a homage "stripe" to the black concave line on the original risers. These are one piece cabinets, the extended section being fastened to the original cabinets permanently, and then veneered with walnut and finished with a clear stain.I have new speaker cloth in ivory that will be installed in the next couple of weeks. 27. Took my son to see Metallica in Dallas recently. He loves Metallica and playing guitar so I made him a deal, learn 5 Metallica songs and the next time they go on tour I'll take you. He learned the whole ride the lightning cd. He upheld is end of the deal and so did I. Great father son time. They sounded as good as they did the last time I seen them in 90 the production was off the chain. Best show I have been to in a long time.

  29. That looks like a nice unit. I'd be concerned tho as it exhaust thru the top which might not benefit you in an enclosed cabinet. All of my gear is also in an enclosed cabinet but I opened the back and run a pair of Sherbourn C12 cooling fans that pull heat up and out and exhaust thru the back. They are great fans if you can find them.

  30. If they sound a little dull and distant, like the sound comes from behind them, or they seem just too polite, you should replace the caps. Klipsch does not sound laid back or polite. Neither should they sound edgy or shouty, but Heresy Is are definately bright, with a rising response curve. The woofer runs at about 94 dB, the squawker at 96 and the tweeter at 99 dB/w/m. They really need to be on the floor, near a wall.
