  1. I picked up some nice Quartets this afternoon and have been running them all night. What a revelation (to me). Now I understand the dynamics, immediacy and the 'live in the room sound'. I'm not hearing any horn honk, harshness or all of the negatives I've read and expected. As soon as I lit them up my wife said "these are the best you have". The vocals sound very natural, the bass is very solid, strong output. The top end is not as extended or airy as the EMIT ribbons in my VMPS speakers. The soundstage is not out in front of the speakers as much as the planar mids, slightly less 3d imaging. But everything else is better. It just sounds live. The dynamics of horns, guitars, drums, much better. Vocals more natural. I have them out 20" from the wall, it's a big room. they fill it. I don't hear the boxiness some complained of, in smaller rooms with the speakers too close to the back wall. I hear no reason to damp the horns or mess with the mid horn. I'm guessing the titanium diaphragms will give me the extension I want in the tweeters. I'm very happy with these. I should mention I am using a big high current CODA amp 200 watts per channel at 8ohms 400 at 4ohms. But, The IRL preamp I have is very neutral sounding with variable gain settings. I'm on the lowest setting.

  3. I'm headed to Massilon, OH for the first big Drum Corps show of the season for me. This is my genre and my passion. It is THE reason I wanted Klipsch speakers, to reproduce the sound of 90 brass instruments and about 45 percussion. It takes horn speakers to reproduce brass instruments, and it has to be able to play LOUD. The corps consist of 150 young people all under the age of 21 and it is some of the finest brass and percussion playing you will hear on the planet, just world class. It is a playing and marching ensemble on a football field, sort of like marching band on steroids. The sound of these world class brass lines will melt your face, which is BTW, the reason we go. Here is a taste of the defending DCI World Champion Bluecoats from Canton, Ohio. I will hear them tonight.

  4. I'm going to try and keep this as coherent as I can, given the combinations and well, as usual, my state of mind.....and, it's Saturday night, 9PM..... Acquired three combos of A55G's and CT120. Installed in Khorns, La Scala's and Belle's. Recently installed some new caps in the Belle's and Khorns (both AA crossovers). Installed ClarityCap CSA's in the Belle's (Daytons previously), and Jantzen Z-Superior V in the Khorns.(Sonicaps previously) Tamed the midrange on both by replacing the 13uf with a 6.8uf, and dropping the tap on T2A from 4 to 3. Results are outstanding on each. The Belle's in particular sound fantastic, but of course the Khorns are still stunning, just a little more stunning.....LOL The imaging on each is really superb. I would say the update and the cost is very worthwhile. It's not night and day, and I didn't expect it to be, but it's definitely a nice jump. So there you have my highly technical review.... BTW, thanks to Dean for recommending the ClarityCaps. http://www.partsconnexion.com/capacitor_film_claritycap_esa_630.html https://www.parts-express.com/jantzen-audio-22uf-800v-z-superior-capacitor--027-482

  6. Me too, it got closed very soon after with some food. I pulled out some of The Rascals for some summer music listening. Having not really listened to them alot, disc 2 of their Anthology 1965-1972 set, I was amazed at some of the unexpected but pleasant chord progression they pulled off! Now it's Chicago X and Hot Streets. Windows open, 76°, 39% humidity and bright sunshine and a light breeze. Wish my childhood friends were here for this. Been doing this for 2-days now.

  9. The reason "it just sounds live" is because live music amplification doesn't use EMIT tweeters and planar mids! I think Klipsch speakers are about as close to live amplification as you can get, where efficiency is the name of the game. And with the Quartets' efficiency, you won't even wake up your CODA amp from their nap to work hard enough to fire up those speakers!

  11. I have Forte, Forte II, Heresy II, KG 4.5 and Quartets. I love the Quartets! (Disclaimer: I love all of my Klipsch speakers.) I agree with all you've stated in your post, and will never part with mine. I do have the Crites Diaphragm upgrades in them, and highly recommend you do this very easy upgrade. The crossovers will also be done soon. During my Forte II upgrade I used them as my mains, and had nothing to complain about. Smooth and with an excellent sound stage, they worked flawlessly. They now are part of my 7.1 system: Forte IIs mains Quartets mid-surrounds Forte I rear-surrounds I'm temporarily using an RB-61 for a center. Being built is a custom center consisting of Forte I mid and tweeter, Forte I crossover and an 8" woofer with perfectly matching Theil parameters to the original K-23, including SPL. It will be ported and fit in the center of my TV console.

  12. I just got back from the Massilon show about 1:00am after a two hour drive. It was freaking UN-believable! The power of the hornlines, the precision of the percussion, the incredible creativity of the shows. Just wow! It is the live! standard I use when I am "tuning" my Klipsch setups. If Klipsch can create that giant soundstage (and it can) then the Klipsch are doing something truly special that no other speakers I know of can reproduce. Life is good.

  22. PWK had lots of interests besides audio. As Paul Harvey would say: "And now for the rest of the story..." I was building up a .50 cal Armsport blackpowder mountain rifle kit to give to my father for his 65th birthday. I had already finished the major part of the final woodworking on the 3/4-length European walnut stock and shaped, filed, etc. the brass furniture for the stock...fitted everything and was ready to do the final fitting and sanding/polishing of everything, so I took it to work with me to do that part over three days during lunch breaks. PWK came striding (he never really really just "walked" anywhere!) through the plant and noticed the stock...slowed down a bit, then continued over to the other side of the plant...finished his business there and as he came back through the plant he swung by my workbench, and asked if he could look at the stock and he proceeded to inquire about whqt I was building up...as he checked the length of pull and cast-off of the stock whle fitting it to his "shooting shoulder" and making positive comments about it. Then, he asked me to let him know when the project was finished, because he wanted to see how it all turned out. That was the real beginning of a different kind of relationship between PWK and myself, other than the normal employer/employee relationship. When the rifle was finished, I left a note at the office for PWK telling him so...shortly afterwards, I got a note from him, asking me to bring it in after work, with a three-day schedule of when he would be in his office after work written on the note. So I stopped by the next day. rifle in hand...and he was delighted...eyes shining and all! As he began to get into a "shooting and gun" round of conversations with me, he constantly handled the rifle and asked pointed questions (He was particularly fond of the double-set triggers on the rifle...and tried them out over and over)...first about the rifle and shooting, then more about me. His interest piqued on my military service as an infantry paratrooper prior to becoming an employee of the company...especially so in my relationships with other NATO paratrooper units...and lots of questions about that ensued. Somehow the conversation ended up on the subject of "if you want to know what the best booze in any country is, just ask its paratroopers"...and he retorted by starting off with Scotland, asking about Scotch. So I told him....and recommended Glenfiddich....by the end of our initial "after work" visit we had been in his office for over three hours...and we had numerous other "after work" visits over the remaining years I worked there. It turned out that we shared quite a few common interests. He never failed to greet me by name as he wandered the plant after that...and he would sometimes just stop and observe me building, check-out a newly finished cabinet...say "good job" and set up another after-work visit before departing my area and the plant. Some of my cabinet shop fellow co-workers would give me the "WTF" look whenever that happened...I would shrug my shoulders at them...and the foreman would be looking at me funny sometimes...wondering what was up. LOL! I really don't think they had a clue about it...besides it was none of their business, anyway. The day PWK left that bottle of Glenfiddich on my workbench...the foreman walked by as I was unwrapping it and told me no alcohol was allowed in the plant (during working hours, that is!)...and I showed him the note from the bottle...he just walked away shaking his head...LOL!

  27. By the way great stories Dave and M_Klipsch. There's some talent on this forum, Dave, I think we should collaborate on a story. I've been doing some research for an expose on Paul Klipsch being the illegitimate child of Nicholas Tesla. In 1904, the year Paul was born Mr. Tesla was a vigorous 48 years old. So I've got that part covered. Now the mother. "Aha!" I say. Has to be someone musically inclined, probably a blues singer. I've concluded that the mother has to be Ma Raimey. She was either 18 or 22 at the time, and was married, significantly in, you guessed it, 1904 to a Will Raimey. A classic coverup. Coincidence you say. I think not.

  28. None this time. I used the EZ (yea, right)sink mount with brackets screwed to cabinets. I used these last time

  29. Several years ago we hired an incompetent tile guy to install back splash. He ended up stepping in under mount sink and breaking it loose from counter top. I took two days off from work and finished tile work. I then used two 1x2 hardboard boards to support sink by Kreg screwing to front and back of cabinet. This work fine until the middle of 2 bowl sink separated from counter. I order 2 packages of sink supports so I could support in three places. The center one aligned with faucet so I had to shorten it, attach sister boards to each side to create a gap that fit around faucet lines.

  30. so by dropping the 13uf to a 6.8uf when you changed the tap setting, you take away the tendency for the mid's to "bark"? how did you determine the proper value of the cap to replace the 13uf? I still have not modified the mids on my AA's because I cant decide whether to add a resistor or change out the cap value and do a tap change.

  37. Becky Hunter (Jim's wife) used to do the baking and such for the Pioneer kitchen a year or so after they got to Hope...and the quiche varieties she made were some of the most popular items at the little restaurant. The Pioneer Kitchen was in Old Washington back then (it was in an old house that is no longer standing there... and the in-season vegetables and herbs came fresh from the garden behind the Pioneer Kitchen)...the Confederate Capital of Arkansas during the Civil War after the union occupied Little Rock...and one of the oldest "cities" in Arkansas in the early 1800's. It was Arkansas' "Gateway to the West" in the early 1800's, and played a major role in the Texas War for Independence. Jim Bowie's famous Bowie Knife was forged there by James Black...along with the Arkansas Toothpick, which was also forged for Jim Bowie.

  39. The one day I came from Detroit to meet with him in August of 1985, my wife and I were treated like long lost grandkids (he was the same age as my grandmother). Woody Jackson gave us a plant tour, then to PWK's office. He took us to the Rotary Club for lunch, then into the lab, introduced us to Jim Hunter, Gary Gillum and many others. Then back to his house for shot of Glen while listening to his personal recordings on the 2PH3 system with false corners. Miss Valerie booked dinner at the Pioneer Kitchen in a nearby town. He insisted on paying for everything and then took us back to our hotel. We all said goodbye with tears in our eyes and I have a great memory for the rest of my life. My Avatar image was taken in front of the museum by my wife, half my life ago. In photography, when an image is composed to fill the frame, it is referred to as "shooting it tight." PWK found this expression rather humorous when I told my wife to do just that. LOL.

  41. I do actually try to talk people out of switching from something they absolutely love and find stunning. BUT..... everyone should experience the La Scalas although not for everyone, they are worth the experience. Don't sell your other speakers until you are convinced. If you truly love them, you will find a place for them somewhere in your home. You will probably want to upgrade your receiver / amp but you need that Sony to run the KLF 10's somewhere. Doesn't have to be a tube amp (answers may vary on that point). Roger may have exaggerated slightly, it's not up there with your first piece of a**, but it's close.

  42. Hibby, If you are asking me to talk you out of your first piece of ***, I aint gonna do it! This will be a big step up if everything is working right with the La Scalas Roger

  43. I was not the only "worker bee" at K&A who PWK knew to a greater extent than a standard boss-employee relationship. It always seemed odd to me that almost NONE of the foremen had that going on...except the extreme "old-timers" remaining at the time, like Portis Gilley (who passed away while I was there), and N.W. Bradford (who was testing speakers before shipping when I was there). Mr. Bradford was one helluva mandolin picker, too! Others also got attention from PWK, normally the funny ones who had been sent during "slow times" to "do yard-work" at PWK's home, although most of their yard-work time ended up being swimming pool time in PWK's pool at PWK's insistence, ie., "Great job on the yard, no need to go back to the plant, since it is within three hours of quitting time...everybody just get into the pool and cool off...and head back to the plant in time to clock out....there is a chest of drawers with clean swimming suits for men and women, and a place to change into and back out of them", as PWK would often announce, once the yard-work was done...he would send the electric train out around the pool fence delivering cold "refreshments", too!

  44. Speaking of going off the floor, here are some pics of my Forte IIs modified to bring the mid / tweeter drivers to ear height. They also have Crites diaphragms and crossovers, along with one NOS K-25 I picked up off of eBay. It was still in factory wrapping! The trim piece around the bottom is a homage "stripe" to the black concave line on the original risers. These are one piece cabinets, the extended section being fastened to the original cabinets permanently, and then veneered with walnut and finished with a clear stain.I have new speaker cloth in ivory that will be installed in the next couple of weeks. 45. That's funny, now remember we do not claim to be normal. I asked if she wanted grills on the speakers and she said no, she likes the open horns. But I do have plans to put a Red Oak strip around the 402 horn edges to make it look better and match the bass bins, probably need to get going on that, they have been like this since 2009, it's a plan anyway. Room with speakers is 24' wide and 18' deep to that pole behind the sofa, another 16' behind that, kitchen dining room. The reason for all the poles was i built it very strong, somewhat have a problem with overkill I guess. The room is far from perfect with the poles and where speakers had to be placed but it still sounds great to us. the other speakers in the room are for HT, 3 forte ll's across the front and a rear center Forte ll, the rear R&L are original forte's. Sub is Danley Spud (for now) it's on the side of the right mwm cabinet along the wall, kind of hidden. I had no place for rears the rooms are all open so I hung them from the beam pointing downward. Again not perfect but you have to work with what you have. Other speaker are Cornwall lll's in the bedroom, in ceiling in her sewing room, mwm with split LaScala tops for out in the yard (parties) plus heresy's in the tiki bar in the yard, Heresy ll in grandsons room, Rb75's in daughters room. OK we like music everywhere, but nothing in the bathroom, so were not completely crazy. imo

  46. i had my buddy buy 2 subs from Jason (on here) and 1 was damaged, even though it was on a pallet! oh, and you guessed it, the shipper said it wasn't their fault! i would almost build a 2x4 wooden cage around it! i know this, if you make an account on FedEx, shipping rates are retarded cheap! it's free, just register and follow all the steps. this could also be one of the reasons buying a used sub isn't as good as buying new, the shipping cost for us are expensive!
