  1. Wellllll, a ten-year-old kid w/a guitar and an Uncle who was the drummer and all the connections??? Yup, family affair, but Derek was great at a young age thanks to that. It was funny last nite watching the group's kids sitting cross-legged on the floor side-stage watching the show. Mic placement? Guitar change? They were ALL smiles doing it helpin out the band. Refreshing to see their smiles exchanged. We'd have been right on top of it too I'm sure.

  2. Survived another one somehow! Embassy Theatre in Ft Wayne is a fantastic venue. Tedeschi Trucks Band? Even more impressive than the venue! Ceptorman you were spot ON concerning the venue! Thanks for the insight!

  3. It didn't seem like that long ago Derek was starting out with the allman Brothers and he was very young, now Greg is gone and Derek is on his own playing music with his wife. Nice picture

  5. Dude, I’m broke - but I have a really nice pair of heavily modified LaScalas that can totally light up a room in the smoothest kind of way.

  6. I was using a gone over by NOSValves (of this Forum) EICO HF-81 tube integrated with a whopping 14 watts per channel...as well as Nakamichi STASIS (Nelson Pass) TA-2A with 50wpc...I've also had good results from an Outlaw Audio RR2150 retro receiver 100wpc and an updated McIntosh MA6200 at 75wpc...the bass thumps with those Chorus lls...toe'd in a bit and about 10-12 inches off the back wall...near to the corners if you can... The good stuff is out there...I will also add that when I tried two Home Theater receivers I was less than satisfied with the sound reproduction...but it wasn't for lacking in bass... Good luck with your choice! Bill

  7. Time to come back and update this thread for anyone that really cares. We've been living in the small rent house now since about April 16th, which has been interesting to say the least, but it's working. We officially close on the construction loan on Tuesday June 5th and should start tearing some ground up on Thursday or Friday. If this hot Arkansas weather keeps going like this, we should be "in the dry" on the house in a few months or so then we will take off on finishing out the inside. It's going to be a lot of work but it will be worth the sweat equity we'll have from it. I'm excited. New house and new audio room not so far off in the distant future now!

  8. I drove to Detroit to get my Khorns. Well worth the trip. To me the thing I noticed most is that they are like microscopes. Bad recordings are bad times one hundred. My friends really like to listen to the remastered version of The Wall through my system. I listen to every kind of music and if it's a quality recording it will sound great. Enjoy your new Horns.

  9. That would have been a horrible thing. Tie game. Your guy rebounds right under your own basket. It's begging for a lay-up or a drawn foul. That is no place to call a time out. Instead, Smith bolts to the outside in a flash of about 1 - 1.5 seconds. LeBron reacted to call a time out, but it was too late by then.

  10. Plus, Hill missed that free throw for the win.

  11. What an error! Smith blew it. Tie game. Offensive rebound under your own basket with 3 seconds left. He clears the ball past the 3 pt. line. WTF! He must have thought they had a lead.

  12. + 1 to that....I have about $ 1800.00 in the 2 pair of Chorus II's I have...To get into a pair of Forte III's would cost close to double that...I was already to pull the trigger... Just couldn't say good bye to the Chorus II's George

  13. The *first* thing you should do is toe them in (rotate them so they aim at the listening position). Considering how close together they are I would say around 25-30 degrees each, depending on how far away the listening position is (the closer you sit, the more toe-in you need). The soundstage will gel much more than with them firing straight ahead as shown in your photo. Then sit back and enjoy them. After a while you can start tweaking your setup to get the most out of them, but some toe-in should be #1 on your list (and it's free!). They look really nice, congratulations! I've owned Cornwalls since 1980 and have listened to thousands of recordings on mine. I now use them as monitors in my recording studio. I know them so well and trust them so much, they instantly tell me what I'm putting onto my recordings, and they're so accurate they allow me to create recordings that sound good when played on just about any other type of system or speaker. That's about the highest recommendation I can give to a speaker.

  14. Congratulations on both of you picking up the H1’s. I myself bought a beater pair on the cheap, with a thought of performing the @ClaudeJ1 upgrades, making them into an inexpensive set of mini Cornwall’s. If I’ve learned one thing while reading his thread, it’s to follow his recipe exactly. The Heresies are beat up, with some delamination of the plywood, and a couple of small strips missing on the outside of one. This has helped me to decide to turn these into Road Warriors. Re-glue and stabilize any layers of the ply that need it, metal corners and edge trim, Duratex coating applied, no grille covers, and a heavy duty grate style dome over the woofer. My wife is a professional musician, and I have a bit of experience with road gear, so this should be a lot of fun! The mods themselves don’t look to be that difficult to perform. New Delta Pro 12a woofers, new caps in the new values, move some wiring around, and port the back panel. Some sound deadening, and you are off to the races. The only thing I am “adding” to the design is a fuse holder and 1amp fast blows inline. Just to be safe.

  15. If that's the case you can still use toggle bolts just stay toward the center or actually slightly off center of the blocks. Why does he want to stay in the grout lines. That's the weakest part of the wall? An anchor can pull out of grout but a toggle bolt won't pull out of a block.

  17. That will not happen. the Chorus was meant to replace the Cornwall, and the widespread protest brought the Cornwall back and killed the Chorus. BTW, we have to give credit to Gary Gillum for the passive radiator direction taken by Klipsch, starting with the KG line.

  19. I currently have my Chorus II's hooked up to an Denon AVR (90 watts) and have been mostly unimpressed with the sound it's putting out. Bass seems anemic and the sound is flat at times, so I would like to change out the amp. I have been looking at integrated amps because of their simplicity. I mostly stream my music but am looking to add a turntable in the near future so don't need a lot of inputs. I've narrowed down my search to the Peachtree Audio Nova300 and the Parasound Halo Integrated. I've read great things about both companies and lean more towards the Peachtree because I can add a tube buffer. I've never heard tubes but like that I can add the sound with this system. I have a couple questions. Do you think I need the 300 watts of the Nova300 to drive the woofer with authority? Or could I save a few bucks by getting the Nova150 which has 150 watts. The Parasound has 160 watts but costs about the same as the Nova300 and I don't like the looks of it as much. I know the Parasound has some bass management features but I'm currently thinking of only a two channel system, I have a sub I can add if I feel it's necessary. Does anyone have experience with either of these setups or some insight? Thanks, Aaron

  26. Follow up: Got up this morning and drove 30 minutes to the FEDEX warehouse. I explained why I was there and was "buzzed in" at the facility. Showed my tracking info to a nice lady there. She took one look at it and said "oh yeah" we are crazy busy and understaffed". She then called the contractor over the driver that had my package. I talked to this person who assured me the driver was on the way to me with the package. Sure enough after about 30 minutes later I had package in hand and on my way home.

  32. The crossovers themselves don't need to be replaced, just the capacitors as they do go out of specification over time. Minimal cost to reap rewards of quality lasting sound for a couple of decades.

  34. I've had the Forte IIIs since almost right after they came out. They are great with their mid and upper resolution, if you can call it that. Next to my Heresy IIs that are gone now there is no concussive bass hitting you, but bass is much lower than the H2s could do. Vocals, horns, saxophones and percussion are even more realistic with the Forte III no doubt. Hearing a pair of low mileage La Scalas recently was an equally impressive revelation in the improvement in the midrange especially, and the highs. Flawless. And these were still totally stock. Yea the bass had what I miss about the Heresy IIs plus it sounded even more tight. After thirty years with the H2s the low frequency response was better on the LS... and that makes sense given the Heritage hierarchy. The imaging of the Forte IIIs mimics what those LS did just to a lesser degree. Bass isn't as punctual but it is way lower. Roy D. did something special with these speakers. Forte IIIs give you a dam* good bang for your buck!

  38. Last things first. I contacted Erich at DIYSG. He is a one-man show and is so busy with filling orders right now he took those kits off-line so he could catch up. He has plenty in stock of all models. If you send him a note through the web site he'll put them back up long enough for you to order if you want to. Erich sells the kits at cost which is why they are so inexpensive, no markup. He is committed to the DIY community and is a national treasure as far as I am and a LOT of other DIY'ers are concerned. +++ The HTM-12 is not overkill. In fact it is the kit I have been eyeing. It uses a 15" SEOS waveguide. By comparison my CF-4's which feature dual 12" woofers uses a 12" wide horn. People are raving about the huge soundstage the HTM-12 puts out. The designer MTG (Matt Grant) says they sound almost the same if level matched. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-diy-speakers-subs/2589729-new-diysg-speakers-htm-12-htm-10-a-2.html#post47280721 Here's a build thread for the MTM-10. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-diy-speakers-subs/2674665-tastyratz-first-build-htm10-me-good-things-come-three.html Build thread for 10's and 12's http://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-diy-speakers-subs/2977540-htm12-htm10-build-eventually-htm8s.html +++ What you need to buy: From DIYSoundgroup.com get the kit of your choice, the flat pack and the assembled crossover. You can save $25 if you want to solder the XO yourself but I highly recommend get the assembled XO it eliminates a lot of work. Get the binding posts from DIYSG or ones of your choice, probably from Parts-express. Other stuff: I used satin black paint but I like black speakers, one gallon, I use latex paint. The MDF sucks up paint like crazy, so two coats. Four inch roller, fine knit. I suppose the standard 9" would be fine, I just used the 4" on mine, it was easier to control the paint coverage. You will need glue, 16 oz bottle of Titebond III. Titebond II is slighter more viscous to keep the tight tolerances of the CNC cut flat pack, but it dries a lot faster. The III will be easier to work with if you need to adjust things on the fly. You will need to line the wall of the ported boxes with denim insulation from Home Depot. Or convoluted open cell foam. Fiberglass insulation will work as well. The denim insulation is the current favorite of DIY'ers.

  39. There are a couple of good options for some horn driven DIY speakers in that price range. The Fusion 10 Pure are the speakers I have. They can handle 350 watts and play to 120 db. The downside is I didn't see a pre-assembled crossover so you would need to solder it yourself. Price for the kit and flat pack would be $252 shipped. What I would suggest is the HTM-10. That is a home theater monitor, $328. It is a newer design than the F10. It has a much larger compression driver at 1.75" and a larger waveguide, 12" vs 10". You can get the pre-assembled XO for $25, recommended. It is 95 db efficient and can go 120 db. Power handling is higher than the F10 as the HTM-10 can be driven 10-500 wpc. I own the Onk 717 and Fusion 10 so I know that combination works well. When used with a 15" sub the sound is extremely accurate. It gives you that live, loud sound which compares to my CF-4's (with sub) which were $2600 new in 1994. I generally don't like talking about other speaker brands out of respect to our hosts. In the case of DIY I don't think it compares to a Klipsch commercial product. It compares more to Klipsch in the used market in terms of bang-for-the-buck IMO.

  40. The original Forte was PWK's favorite speaker that wasn't a Klipschorn, of which, the Jubilee was the top. I had Forte and Forte II, and I like better than my cornwalls but not as much at the Chorus II. So I imagine the Forte III is super tweaked with all the latest research in addition to the, basically Heresy footprint. Can't go wrong with the Forte III.

  48. Here is a direct comparison of the K22 and K24 in a Heresy sized enclosure. The K24 is a bit more capable on the lower end, but the K24 seems to reach xmax at about 5 less watts.
