  2. Secure anything loose is a great starting point, How far down is the bedrock below your foundation ? Speaking about loose things, driving west seems the bestest...

  3. Don't like the looks of this storm.....seems to have an X on Wilmington and the Outer Banks. Talking 40' waves and 150 mph winds. Last category 4 was Hazel in 54' a real butt kicker. I was only 5 but recall the howling wind threatening to blow out single pane windows and water to the top of the porch. Got an email from BigStewMan who expressed his concern. LF and Jake will head over to her mother in laws place in the next county (generator and no trees). That will leave me to keep an eye on our two places (both with large trees).....about 10 minutes apart. She will buy some provisions for both places today while I get some premixed chain saw gas and secure anything loose. Just thinking out loud gents........

  4. They should teach their children to be good human beings -- mainly by modeling good behavior, empathy, and thoughtful citizenship. Respect for authority can be overdone. Teaching respect for fellow human beings, including those we disagree with, and doing them, the nation and the world a favor by engaging in dialog while listening carefully, and speaking thoughtfully, rather than staying quiet, would be good. Children should be helped to be analytical. They should be helped to use rationalism, empiricism (including science), follow up on intuition, maintain openness (one of the ancient definitions of faith), and to evaluate authority.

  6. Hunker down @Tarheel stay safe we're winging it... but looks like the NC leg of the trip may get terminated. Particularly the beach. I'm about ready to get under way. May not get passed LasCruces. I am invited to dine and overnight. Not much of a first day on the road. Not that I don't have 3 days... but damn... 600 miles a day ain't getting anywhere. It's only 30hrs driving time. It gonna take a shoe horn to get the Scalas in this car w/o tearing stuff up. They will fit. With an inch or two to spare. I thought about packing a bag . Dashed that. Grocery bags.. No room for anything hard or of size. No i-phone... y'all will be spared of me for a little.

  7. Good luck man, I'd probably pick one of the two spots and hunker down when it really gets nasty. Up my way we have already had a ton of rain. Just a week ago 3 people in the county got washed away at an overflowing bridge and died. It is simple amazing the force water has. Roads I ride my bike on are missing huge chunks of asphalt. It was just a heavy rain noting more. Ground is saturated, sump pump running all the time. Unless we really dry out prior to Florence and the Machine taking the stage I'm really not sure what will happen with the resultant water. I'm not too worried about actual hurricane winds, but the water has no place to go. For the first time ever I'm actually thinking of what to do with my equipment in the basement. Scary. Be safe and best of luck. You do look like you are a prime suspect for this one.

  10. Hopefully it'll veer north of you and you'll be on the "clean" side of the storm. It makes a huge difference.

  11. Another good way to store water is a DIY holding tank(outdoor) I used these for years when we use to breed Koi fish and needed extra holding tanks. It's really simple and hold alot of water. I used farm fence wire cut ti 2' high to just make a ring whatever size you want just by bending the wire at the end to connect together. Put some visqueen in it hanging over the edges at the top and fill with water, it's that easy. I wouldn't go to high as it would increase the side pressure alot, but with regular farm fencing it can easily hold a couple feet in depth. When your done roll up the wire to use again later and have visqueen ready to put it back up whenever needed. I just used 6 mil plastic and it lasted a long time. https://www.motherearthnews.com/diy/water-storage-tank

  13. Its raining down here in SE Texas so I thought it was a good day for some Doom & Sludge Metal. First up was my favorite release by Pallbearer and coincidently their first, Sorrow and Extinction. Side A is maginificent. Gonna play with Earth a little later on with the album Pentastar:In the Style of Demons.

  14. I'll be picking up a nice large trash can from Walmart on my way back from the beach today . Instead of filling the tub I fill the trash can so I can still bathe and use the water for flushing the toilet . I have plenty of drinking water . Then I dry out the trash can and take it back 😜

  18. Sounds like a plan already formed. Hunker at one or the other a good idea. Staying inside is totally recc. All else can wait until it passes. Sending the best vibes your way Chuck... May want to premake a thermos...

  19. We have reservations at a B&B on the Outer Banks for the 26-29th. That may have to be canceled........ With the amount of water coming......flooding is a concern for sure. Most folks here don't have it unless they are on the coast. Will call my insurance agent and see if they are still writing policies. Usually not within 72 hours of a hurricane.

  20. It was also a time when a color TV would run you a whole month's income. Opening up to foreign imports allowed the exploitation of workers in other nations, thus benefiting American consumers at the check-out lines enormously. Union members were blamed for the unwillingness to work under such conditions. We can't have it both ways.

  23. More thread crapping! But we don't have an MLB thread so we've got to put this discussion somewhere, which I refuse to do to Jeff's NFL 2018 thread! However, my Pirates are hoping to end the season over .500, there are too many teams above them to get a playoff spot. They've had good pitching believe it or not, just inconsistent offense due to injuries. What were we talking about?

  24. I put those two options out there because I am a fan of Audyssey room calibration and and Denon and Marantz are known for having pretty powerful amps. I am also a Pioneer Elite fan but I haven’t owned one of their newer models, within the last few years. You will have to do some research to figure out what brand and model receiver you like the best. With that size of a room, power won’t be an issue so focus on the features and the sound characteristics.

  25. Let me approach American education from a different perspective. I've lived in foreign countries, and have witnessed how other cultures work. There is waaaay too much competition for education in America, K-12. Here are a few examples. Almost every kid here has 200 channels of TV, countless movies and music, stereos, school sports, cell phones, internet,Facebook,YouTube, video games, skateboards, bicycles, dirt bikes,ATV's,UTV's, boats, skiing, fishing, hunting, guns, camping, backyard playground items, pools, animals to play with and take care of,cars,trucks,toys,K-horns-Haha,all of our major sporting events and great entertainers, both parents working. Most countries don't have all these luxuries and distractions. The kids just go to school, come home and study...

  27. Those beach houses can be lifted off their foundations and floated until they bash into other people's homes, etc. Cars and boats, too. I'd stay clear of the beach areas. Drowning is a real risk.

  32. The big benefit of a TAD is that the driver has a big magnet (great transient response) and Be diaphragm (pushes the break up modes into a higher and less audible spectral region). If the eBay product no longer has the Be diaphragm, then remember the replacement pair will be over $1700. They are expensive! It is quite possible that if you buy them you will have no idea about what shape the diaphragm is in and whether or not is an OEM version. This risk is obviously inherent on all eBay purchases. Let me suggest a more affordable alternative, although I am not necessarily saying it is as good as the TAD you are thinking of. There are plenty of JBL drivers on eBay (the ones I like are the 2445 and 2446. They are about 700-800 new but you can easily find used ones for 125-175 each. They do have a big magnet (similar to a TAD in strength). With an OEM diaphragm (not Be) at about $75 each, you will have a very nice performing driver (I have used them in many applications and they are on my own K-510 and K-402 horns) If you want to go the extra step, there are Be diagrams for this model that cost about $650 each and will give the additional benefits (made by Truextent). You can read about these over at the JBL forum. Think of this as a very affordable back up plan. I am afraid it will be difficult to find used TAD drivers.

  40. +++ Rankings Week 3 +++ Just like everybody was guessing from last week, that with no top ten matchups there was some minor movement but the top ten stayed about the same, AP Poll. My Mountaineers didn't move at 14th, Michigan had a nice gain +2 climbing back into the top 20. SoCal dropped 5 places but the AP dropped Michigan State ten places into 25th and the Coaches really didn't like Mich State losing as they dropped them eleven places into 24th! http://www.espn.com/college-football/rankings

  41. Never forgive, never forget. His reaction at the time said it all. He knew he screwed up, then after the game when the nfl rescued him, he was all cocky "yeah knew it all along. No class, he plays for a cheating coach, he cheats, they all cheat. In the nfl, cheaters always win, and winners always cheat. What a total cnut.

  43. See the following PWK article from 1970 (Audio magazine) that describes the greater portion of the "why": The Mud Factor.pdf Note that properly done horn-loaded loudspeakers have generally inaudible levels of modulation distortion over direct radiating loudspeakers, even at very high SPL--a fact that is consistently overlooked by audiophile magazines and other self-appointed audio equipment rating "experts"--because they don't recognize that it's the difference in modulation distortion levels that they hear when comparing horn-loaded to direct radiating. Also note that bass modulation distortion is at least an equal factor in loudspeaker clarity as midrange modulation distortion. You should try to hear a pair of La Scalas, Belles, Klipschorns, or Jubilees, all with horn-loaded bass bins to understand the full meaning of "clarity". This is also true of the multiple entry horns of Danley Sound Labs and the earlier Sound Physics Labs. Clarity is the distinguishing feature of all these loudspeakers. Chris
