  1. Not really. All I can tell you is that we looked at it. It’s a good driver but we decided to stick with the good driver we are using.

  2. That's the difference between weather forecasts and news. One is trying to predict the future and the other tells you what just happened. They've been waffling on a chance of rain... it is all but gone now. Wasn't great to start... 20% Wed/Thurs. Got pushed to Fri - 20%... got pushed a slight chance of a sprinkle on Saturday

  10. As some might know from earlier posts, I recently acquired a very nice pair of Cornwall I's which I very much enjoy. However I've been approached by a local acquaintance to see if I have any interest in a pair of LaScala's. I have a smaller second system in a smaller space that I suppose I could place the Cornwall's, where they could be placed in corners. Would this space accommodate LaScala's and is it something I should do if the cost is reasonable? Ultimately they would be powered by a pair of McIntosh MC30's.

  11. Yea the forecast has changed a lot since earlier in the week. All associated with the range of temps... and that makes sense. Heck we're at 50 something now but the last few days it wasn't to the upper 40 by the hotspot of 4pm here. I'd like to see the 14" they talked about the other day. But 1/2 inch of ice is scary anywhere there are old trees and power lines. Now it's at 4 - 7 with it getting to up to 29 by 5 pm.

  12. MyRef FE LM3886 based chip amp LM4780 based integrated chip amp-audio sector boards. KT88 SET - parks audio clementine board These are the amplifiers I have built over the last ten years. It blows mind how quickly that time went by. The first amp is actually the second shown. It is the LM4780 based audio sector amp. this is basically 2 LM3886 in one package. This was when I thought I needed lots of power. The second was the MyRef type amp. This is a great amp and I would definitely like to build another some day. It had noise issues that I could not resolve. The case is currently in process of becoming an F5 (or at least has been in process for 5 or more years!). The third is a KT88 clementine SET. This has been my daily driver for several years. This is a fantastic amp that powered my La Scala clones with ease and now powers the dual heil wave guide on top of the Scala clone bins. I would love to build many other versions of this amp but the boards are out of print. Someday I will build point to point. I have a 300B project that is also half done sitting on my desk. My original goal was to build a nice DIY hifi item at least every year. Seeing how long the KT88s have been in use, I may need to consider replacing them at some point.

  13. Its all by the lowest $ and the right length of hair, color of fingernails that the workers have now. Guess doing a bad job means you can shovel it and get paid for doing it again now-a-days. Cue up PWK turning his lapel again! They keep doctoring the temps for Sunday, to have a new forecast twice a day. Hope it won't be sleet and freezing rain.

  14. Thanks to all for your insight. I've ordered the SL1210GR. I decided to go with black since I've been looking at the silver for over 40 yrs. I'm hoping to replicate Islander's experience, we'll see how it goes. It's hard to find them so I have it on backorder, hope it doesn't take too long. I'll let you folks know how it goes, thanks again for all your help.

  15. Mornin' all We got a delivery of firewood, finally.....75` predicted for today. Figures... doesn't it? on the news Someone got popped for doing 125mph on I-10, east of Tucson. What surprises me is that the condition of the roadway was good enough to drive that fast. Our roads aren't very good. Speaking of that.... the state has been repaving the roads in/out of town... both of them. They are almost done, except for patching the potholes that have erupted in the new pavement. I have to question the plan for the paving... They tore up and repaved bits and pieces in various places along the road... and then drove the haul trucks, full of asphalt, across. Tearing up what they just laid down....

  16. It seems that, as the good Dr. F said, most people are going to get this variant, including the fully vaccinated. Im glad that it doesn't seem to have the resulting number of deaths and hopefully will help with everyone's natural immune systems. A mandate that allows fully vaccinated people to blindly go to work, unchecked and requiring unvaccinated to be tested weekly and sent home for a positive result sounds like a half baked plan.

  17. The Cornwall lV’s LF/Cabinet was redesigned to maximize its performance with special attention paid to the ports implementation and significant reduction(practically eliminating it IMHO) of acoustical box resonances. I would strongly discourage changing anything and especially how the foam has been implemented/placed because that is an important part of the design. miketn

  19. Ok I felt lazy after seeing all the great pics of all you guys' guitars and I only posted a pic from the Collings site. I took her out to go over some music and figured I would snap pics for you guys. I highly recommend these guitars to anyone in the market. Word of the wise get a used one made before 2017, Bill lost his battle to cancer then. The new ones are still great but the master passed away and I believe his son still makes them but the one's Bill made are worth more and will only increase in value. I got mine back in 2011 and don't think I will ever sell it, it's just lovely to play, hands down best guitar I have ever played and I have played a lot.

  20. I’ve gone back and forth, forth and back between nCore 400 monoblocks, Benchmark and First Watt F3 hoping to actually say I favor one over another. I really believe the Benchmark and FW sound better than the nCores. There is a sense of better clarity, more “air” particularly in the upper mids and top end and just an overall sense of an openness not there with the nCores. Sure they all play Jubes louder than helll but I can play the FW and BM much louder More Comfortably than the nCores. That alone tells me that either distortion or harmonics are cleaner or friendlier than that with nCores. Of course my ears, my associated gear, my room etc. But I believe what I’m hearing -

  25. Back in 2010, I was using an SL-1400 Mk.2, probably from 1978. It seemed okay, but the controls were getting sticky and there was a ticking sound as the platter rotated, so I decided to get an SL-1210M5G while they were still available. I got one of the last ones. Naturally, it came without a cartridge, so I took the headshell from the 1400, with its Shure M97xE cartridge, and popped it onto the new M5G. As well, I installed the thick Sorbothane Platter Matter mat that had been on the 1400, reasoning that it would perform better than the thin rubber Technics mat. I adjusted the VTA to correct for the thicker mat, with the tonearm raised at the pivot end just slightly, as I found that improved the treble response a bit. That’s something that you can easily and repeatably adjust, until it sounds perfect to your ears. So there it was. Everything that contacted the record surfaces was exactly the same with the new M5G as it had been with the 1400, so I wasn’t expecting to hear any difference. WRONG! The new turntable sounded much better, with more clarity and more authority in the bass notes. I was surprised and impressed. Later, I went to Sound Hounds, where I had bought the cartridge, and had them swap the cartridge onto the new silver headshell of the M5G and carefully align it, as they had done when I bought the cartridge a few years earlier. There was no audible difference going from the old black headshell to the new silver one, but it did look better/correct, and its contact surfaces would have been cleaner. I’m still happily listening to the SL-1210M5G, and it still looks and operates like it was brand new. If I were in your place, I’d buy the SL-1200GR without hesitation. Get your Ortofon cart checked for good stylus condition and carefully mounted and aligned on the new headshell, and you’ll be set for life, unless you want to upgrade your cartridge at some point in the future. Part of the pleasure of owning something is the experience of using it, and for that reason I’d advise against getting a Mk. 7, since you’ll be reminded of its lower cost every time you use it. Get the GR, and every time you use it, you’ll have a smile on your face.

  26. Someone just turned me on to this Roger Waters album "Amused To Death". The music is trash but he did some really cool tricks with sounds being out of phase in order to place sounds from this record all around you. It's the perfect record to test your speaker placement, as a lot of these tricks won't work on poorly setup speakers. Even on the first track, there's a dog barking and it sounds like it comes from behind me and it sounds like it's coming from outside my house! Really freaky stuff as even when you turn your head to face the direction of the sound the illusion is upheld. This is a really cool record for sounds coming from places they seemingly shouldn't be coming from in a 2-channel system.

  27. I found these 1976 La Scalas on Houston Craigslist. Second owner has had them since 1982. A couple of years ago he had the "AA" crossovers serviced and slightly modified, but the drivers are original. He also veneered them in rosewood and added casters. The rosewood veneer seems to be polarizing - people either love it or hate it. The casters may reduce bass coupling slightly, although not that I have noticed (I ran Cornwalls before, and the La Scalas seem to have as much bass, except for one or two pieces I occasionally listen to). The coasters could easily be removed, but I haven't decided about that yet. I'd be interested in informed opinions about what these speakers are worth. Thanks Bob

  30. I live in Bentonville just north of there. I can go look at these if anyone is interested. I saw those but thought the price was weird so I assumed a scam. As far as the area goes it is beautiful here and if you enjoy mountain biking you will not find a better area for riding. The Waltons have spent close to 300 million in bike trails alone and the Walton foundation continues to do that. Crystal bridges is an amazing art museum and the downtown area still has that small town feel/vibe. With that comes a higher cost of living price tag, probably cheaper than what most deal with but for me moving from the southern part of the state here I was shocked at the difference. Anyway happy to help with these or general inquiries about the area just hit me up with a PM.

  31. The big consoles have balanced circuits all the way through. It's also true that getting 90% of the way means MOST people wouldn't hear a difference in the end product. And you still need to have talent (musicians) for the final outcome. Unless you are doing techno... 🙄

  33. It doesn't seem unreasonable that, given the huge increase of reported cases (nearing 850,000/day) combined with the drastic shortage of 'official' testing, the daily case numbers might be low. On top of that, it is being reported that the at-home test results are not being counted, and surely there are asymptomatic people not being tested. Estimates are merely guesses, even when educated ones, but I doubt anything 'sinister' is happening here by association. My opinions, of course.

  36. Nothing wrong with a good stamped driver like the K33 , and I’ll try not to kid myself. Actually It would be interesting to listen to your speakers, I have read that some people have gotten good results with the 511. But it might be awkward if I didn’t like them 🤓

  38. Does not hurt to play with the DSP, get used to how it works and how the settings affect the results. When I first went to a DBX Venu360 in hindsight I had a poor optimization but over time and learning the system I could not see not using it. Part of the fun is the learning process! This on a Kpt-904/K510/30"THT.

  41. Just a thought... I help support a little over 400 PCs, about 70 percent are linux. Using usb drives to move some things around has been iffy, but I formatted a usb with rufus (windows only), but let it make it an ms-dos disk/drive. It's worked better than other formats. Originally I tried it to be able to do a bios update on a laptop, actually on a laptop that would initiate the update from the bios itself.
