  2. Of course measurements have real value “when implemented and interpreted in the proper context and with their limitations recognized..!!!“ but ultimately we are designing not for a meter/test but for the human experience and the latter is the ultimate goal and the meters/tests are just tools that must be used wisely and within their limitations. Heyser who was a pioneer in measuring Audio, Acoustics and Sound Reproduction wisely warned the audio engineers of what was the intended results of their labor and the best engineers understand this fact I’m sure. By the same token the listening experience is also dependent in part by experience and training when it comes to making valid judgements when comparing sound reproduction from our Equipment/Room..!!! Einstein: "Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted" Richard C. Heyser: “Perhaps more than any other discipline, audio engineering involves not only purely objective characterization but also subjective interpretations. It is the listening experience, that personal and most private sensation, which is the intended result of our labors in audio engineering. No technical measurement, however glorified with mathematics, can escape that fact.” miketn

  3. Matt IMHO has created a very unique cosmetic style with his amplifiers that reflect a real artistic style and I find them beautiful and within there circuit design l believe he is just as committed to excellent sound reproduction. These amplifiers represent an Artistic Statement and a Sound Statement and for those seeking these qualities I couldn’t imagine someone not being excited and proud to own one… 🙂 miketn

  4. That´s just it, JohnJ. I bought these used, and while the LPs themselves are ok, the sleves, outer and inner, are really used and i´m notr sure what has accumulated in the inner sleve in 40 years. So I´ll put the LP inside a new inner sleve and keep the old one as well. 😉

  6. Good God…. You are missing the point. This is musical. I’ve tried everything from gyrator, J-Fet CCS, tube CCS, inductor, you name it to load my voltage amplifier stage/s…. this sounds BETTER to my ears. And they are in fact, what my customers rely upon. Please don’t turn this thread into some sort of inane engineering pissing match. I have no idea what you think you need to prove to anyone. Armchair braggadocio and looking down ones own snoot at the effort of others is seldom attractive. It’s my amplifier I will build it as I see fit. My customers truly enjoy the music that it makes. 107…. and counting. And really, that’s all that matters.

  19. "proper sleeves" I don't get it. Sure the rice-paper ones feel softer than different grades of paper. Then the plastic ones like MFSL had way back in the 80s (they might have been the first with those) they were sold at the record stores. I had originals from the 70s that did not have static or any other issues because I always used that Discwasher... even dry just to dust the grooves when I couldn't find that D-3 stuff anymore. Kept it clean also. Then that two hundred pounds of vinyl I got a year or so ago? Some of those had the lps in a plastic sleeve I guess to keep from messing up the decorative printed ones that were next to them in like-new shape. So just keep the dust outta there before you slide that record in and it's all good (in my mind)!

Can not find that flavor that I remember from buying big red 2 1/2 lb cans at the grocery store for $6.00 anymore though. Colombian Pink Bourbon La Cinta? Tried it but $40 for a pound and a half is too much. Got two pounds of Sumatra for that and those are nice rich tasting beans even if I get medium instead of dark roast. & like Dave said above no sugar allowed.. those two varieties are sweet already... ya know like carrots are really sweet or cooked onions are too? Need to make dinner, it's ten `till six think I'm hungry again.

  25. Tongue in Cheek 🤩 Installed Roon yesterday…………..I am not a happy camper, with several caveats. First, I’ll admit I probably don’t have things optimized yet. Second, I’m running Roon from a Windows 8.1 laptop which apparently is not the recommended way to achieve the highest performance. However, I also don’t see how adding more components (like Roon Nucleaus or Intel NUC) and/or network bridges, switches and cables are supposed improve sound quality. That being said, here’s what happened. After getting Roon setup on the laptop PC, and Roon app on my Tablet, I listened to a few diverse album tracks. Yo-Yo Ma/Bobby McFerrin, "Grace" from Hush 10cc, “I’m Not in Love” Wynton Marsalis/Eric Clapton, “Play the Blues Live From Lincoln Center” I found something very irritating about the sound quality. I can’t put my finger on it just yet, but the recollection I have of similar experiences might be the very first CD releases, most of which were quite terrible (I have all of the initial releases from Sony CBS). Another analogy might be, it was like going back to using a Crown IC150 preamp, DC300 amp, some large horns in a small untreated reverberant room. The best example of why I thought Roon was not as good as what I’m used to listening to is because, I really didn’t want to continue listening. The first song on the Marsalis/Clapton album, “Ice Cream” is kind of a cute number for an opener. With Roon, I really couldn’t wait for this to be over. Literally. I skipped forward to a couple of other tracks. Still a no go. Same “feeling” with the other tracks mentioned above. I decided to play these same tracks, from the same PC, same HDMI connection to the NAD M32, but using J River as the player. LOW AND BEHOLD. Played “Ice Cream” again. This time I didn’t want to turn it off. I wanted to continue listening, to track after track. I think this is what really tells the story. And I would go so far as to say, that if I were still an analog guy, what I heard from Roon is exactly why I would prefer vinyl and keep saying digital isn’t there yet. All of that being said, I understand were some Roon fans are coming from. The multi-room/multi-user/multi-source playback convenience and whole house integration. I get it. But for me, it’s not what I need, nor want., especially if it can’t provide at least equal sound quality to what I’m currently using. For me, as it currently stands, I’m getting the best sound streaming hi-res from Tidal. Router --> Ethernet --> NAD M32 BluOS. Here the raw data stream goes directly into the amplifier. No other intermediate components/connections/cables required. Next would be using the laptop PC playing my ripped CD FLAC files using J River --> HDMI --> NAD M32. I also tried streaming internet radio using Roon vs Ethernet directly into the M32. Same result. Very un-engaging. I have a support ticket in with NAD/Bluesound. Should be interesting to see what they have to say.

  27. Roon can span the gamut from no-color (the file is sent bit-perfect to the endpoint DAC) to lots of color (SRC, DSP, EQ etc). His signal path screen shot should tell more of the story.

  29. EDIT: As usual, I got a bit carried away, so here's the short version. Yes, I do notice an improvement from adding the second sub, which is mainly more consistent bass in every part of the living room that I use. In case you have some extra time, the long version follows: Yes, I do notice a difference with two subs, but it's not what you might expect. With my older 400-watt sub, the bass was relatively even around the room, but when I got the first 850-watt sub, there was a very noticeable bass peak in front of the sofa. At first, I that my favourite Net Radio station had really cranked up the bass for some reason, and then I noticed that it was limited to a small area maybe just a metre or a yard wide. I measured the sound level in the peak area and found that it was 20 dB higher in that spot, which is quite a lot. Once I got the second 850-watt sub, that problem disappeared, so that was great. To be honest, the theoretical reduction in distortion is hard to pick out at the near-infrasonic frequencies, but the overall smoothness is noticeable. As well, the sound seems to be more solid and complete. It's not perfect. I need to do a couple of minor tweaks, including using the built-in DSP of the subs to adjust for the sound in 5 locations per sub, which does make an audible difference. I swapped in a different, more sound-absorbing, sofa since I did that job on the first sub, so I have to get out the Perfect Bass Kit (PBK), with its tripod and calibrated microphone, and do it again, plus do the second sub, which I should get to sometime soon. That no-rush-to-get-that-done feeling tells me that the system sounds fine right now, not sounding like anything about it is bugging me to make any changes. As well, the JubScalas may need some minor positioning changes, since I'd like the sweet spot to be wider. Some people go so far as to have four subwoofers, but I don't think my room is so sonically challenged as to require that much subwoofage to sound right in every part of the room. I rarely go behind the sofa, for example, so if there's some irregularity back there, I don't care. 'Nuff said!

  30. They would still not be cheap. Something “cheap” is not always a good value. He has built versions in a plain box before ... not sure if this form factor lends itself to doing that easily. I am betting heavily that these amps are more than “glam”. I will find out very soon .... Aside from quality parts in and out there is a LOT of fabrication. I don’t think people understand how much labor is involved in a build like this. For anyone who hasn’t , visit his site..... Not many people possess the skills to build stuff like that.

  32. Though it may not happen....we're contemplating a 2022 which means it would not be an old unit in the car. Besides.... in these newer cars, "what" do you replace? What gets pulled out? Yesterday (reason it's taken me so long to respond) I had to drive 100 miles, put in a near 8 hour day, then drive 100 miles back home so didn't have time to do anything. Anyway, last night on way home, I passed the Honda dealer, so on a whim, pulled in (2nd time, first time, they had nothing on the lot) Now, they DID have a couple Accord's, one was hybrid the other two were (I think he called them) 'Sport' models. They had paddle shifters. (can those also be driven as an 'automatic' I presume?) Wife would probably want a sunroof and none had that but I still got a chance to finally just look and see how it felt. Toyota dealer is 30 miles away so haven't looked there yet. One reason I stopped in is it's like pulling teeth to get "just a rough idea" of what their cost is.... when I asked, he still gave me a story, hemmed, yammered a bit.... talked about the OTHER guy who puts "$4,500" arbitrary markup fee on their car...blah blah blah... Finally, I just cut him off and said "so what you're telling me is it's sticker price, right???" to which I finally got my answer, yes. That was really the whole reason I pulled in. So now that I know they are (suggesting) that they are sticker price only, I can have a comparison idea. It really gets me annoyed at some of the games they have to play. Oh, and I'm getting incessent emails from these folks (when I inqired online, I gave a bogus phone number because I knew what that would bring) None the less.... bunches of emails about how "we want your car".... I'm thinking, you know, if these are that hot of a commodity, then I'll just sell it myself. You don't want it and you're not going to get it.....I'll give it to my brother in law before I sell it to you. (they lost everything in Katrina and are still working on rebuilding their lives, and THEN, his wife gets diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer.... so any charity I have goes to them, not the dealer) Back to work!

  34. I did not want blutooth, and I do not want to stream, and I do not want additional wires. Bought a new cheap Pioneer deck with USB, replaced the old unit that was in the car, and voila...listen whatever put into USB flash memory. Many albums. I even got the remote control with that unit. And of course I can plug in a smartphone if needed.

  35. Yes since they used a non-polarized plug it will not cause any damage either way but one should exhibit less noise which is the way you want to wire it up. So the best way to do it is connect it whichever way has less noise. I typically see the neutral with a resistor to chassis and the hot with a capacitor to chassis. If it was wired in reverse you would have 120v on the chassis if you left it plugged in with the power switch off. The 820k resistor will limit the current to 146uA which is not enough current to kill you but what if that resistor failed short? Then you would have 120v with no current limiting ability on the chassis before the fuse which is bad. The branch circuit feeding the receptacle the amp is plugged into is a 15A circuit breaker which is typically the smallest you'll see, well 15A is plenty enough current to kill you. The only way it would be safe would be relying on a GFI receptacle.

  37. How's about PE (Parts Express)? They have gold plated spade terminals with little red/black booties https://www.parts-express.com/Gold-Spade-8-AWG-6-2-Pair-095-670 Careful with what stud size you need. The ones I linked are #6 and work perfect with Klipsch original crossovers in La scala and KHorn. Also work perfct with ALK's stuff too. Don't know about Crites but would assume there good with those also.

  43. When the factory CASSETTE stereo in my '95 Saturn crapped out, I replaced it with a Sony unit that accepted a USB drive or an iPod, either of which was inserted and concealed behind the hinged faceplate. You have to make sure your computer can convert the CD to a Sony compatible file format, which of course my Mac did. The only catch is, you have to go out to your car and retrieve the iPod/USB drive whenever you want to add more music. Currently I must have over 30 CD's loaded on my thumb drive and have no idea if I'm anywhere near the drive's capacity. The unit cost only a hundred bucks purchased from Crutchfield, and it works like a charm (Yes; I'm still driving that '95 Saturn!) I might be worth it to just replace the stock unit when you get the car.

  45. I have heard everything in current Klipsch heritage lineup except the Klipschorn AL6. For my ears, the mids and highs were all pretty similar - letting the size of the listening room steer you is not a bad move - sitting in sweet spot should be a great and similarly voiced experience with anything you choose. OR you could listen to them and let your bass preferences guide you. Bass is where I heard the most difference. I will vouch for the Cornwall IVs. I really enjoy them. Good luck on your speaker hunt!
    1 point
  46. La Scalas are wonderful speakers. I have a pair of 1970s original La Scalas, and a pair of 2007 La Scala IIs, so you know they’re my favourite speakers, next to Jubilees, which wouldn’t quite fit into my place. However, as you noticed and accurately described, they don’t put out much in the bottom two octaves or so. There are some mods which claim to fix this, but the length of the bass horn on the Scala is what it is, and the only really effective cure is to add a subwoofer or two. Since these are premium speakers, it only makes sense to use premium subs, with fairly high power that can reach deep into the bass zone, down to below 20 Hz. Some will point out that the lowest note on a 4-string bass guitar is at 40 Hz and the lowest note on a 5-string bass is at 30 Hz, so you don’t need to go super low on the subwoofer’s rating. The reply to that is that when the sub is operating at its absolute limit, the sound will indeed be limited. If it’s down 3 dB at 30 Hz, trying to bring it up so that its response is sort of close to flat at that point will require double the amplifier power. Not an ideal situation. The sub should be operating in its linear zone, reproducing those deep bass notes with no more difficulty than the higher notes. So the sub that seems to fit the bill in your system is too expensive? You can either buy a used one, or keep adding to your stereo account for a bit longer. I’ve done both in my sub journey, and each choice seemed right for the circumstances at the time. I first got a sub that was pretty good, so the overall sound of the Scala/sub was pretty good. I was happy with that for years, but eventually I swapped out that sub for a much better one, costing around double the price of the first one. Wow! That’s what I said about that. It went way deeper, so now it was easy to hear every note in a tune equally accurately, not rolled off like it had been with the old sub. The feeling was “Now, this is the real thing! This is the ‘you are there’ effect that we’re all after.” Now, when I’m listening to some music, there’s no more feeling that this or that piece needs an upgrade, or the sound is pretty good, but... Now the sound was really good, and I was hearing notes I hadn’t been able to hear before. That was great, but my plan at the time was to get a second matching sub as soon as I could afford it. The shop gave me a good discount on that sub, and they were good enough to agree to sell me a second sub at the same price in a few months. Four months later, I went in and got the second sub, at the same good price. The shop was happy to get the business (this was in 2020), and I was happy to get a pair of these fine subwoofers. That’s not to say that if you can’t afford mighty subs at the moment that you shouldn’t bother. Get what you can when you can. Very few of us can afford to buy our dream systems all in one go. Most of us build them up a piece at a time, and the sound gets better and better, until it reaches a point where the feeling is that it’s just fine as it is, with no lust for more or better. Part of the logic was of this was to be sure that the subs should be as sharp on transients as the La Scalas, plus having the two subs means that the drivers only need to move half as far to produce the same total volume. Half the cone movement should mean around half the distortion, getting them closer to the very low distortion of the horn-loaded La Scalas. It’s been pointed out on the Forum a number of times that La Scalas plus subs equals a system that can sound better than the Klipschorns, the top of the Heritage Series. As well, they give much more flexibility in positioning. La Scalas are fine speakers that can be the heart of a great sound system, one that you can enjoy from the first day you have them, and improve pretty much as far as you want to take them, and the rest of your system.

  48. The rise in bass response in the La Scala bass horn is not due to any resonance. It’s a feature/glitch of the dimensions of the horn. The La Scala II bass horn has dimensions that are almost identical to those of the original La Scala, and it has the same size peak at 148 Hz. This is in spite of being built of 1” MDF, which is much stiffer than the 3/4” plywood of the original Scala, and much less prone to any resonances. How high is the peak? The EQ setting to flatten the peak is -7 dB, on both the original Scala and the Scala II, and yet the peak is not all that noticeable to every listener. Maybe the boost in the mid-bass makes the lack of low bass less noticeable, to some listeners anyway. Just my opinion.
    1 point
  49. Perhaps but I find it unnecessary. There are several current music genres that utilize hyper unrealistic bass - I don't listen to these. So I suppose if one was trying to replicate the PA system of a band or dance hall this might be the way to go. IMO a 100lb speaker with a 15" bass driver should be more than sufficient. The idea of purchasing such a speaker, and then utilize a portion of it by rolling it off in my mind negates the purpose of the purchase. One would be better with stand mounts and a massive sub. That way you would actually be using what you purchased. Dave Brubeck didn't vibrate the windows out when he played.
